  • For me, the guy in black wearing glasses, sits so tight on the beat and picks out all the percussion with subtle moves. He's dancing for the love of it. Classic Northern dancer.Carl's stamina, as always is something to be admired, and one of the nicest guys anyone could meet. Top footage!!

  • the guy who won it was worse than average i wouldnt have put him in the top 6 simple , the girl in the black vest , winner every time who were the judges they should learn how to dance themselves

  • I was born 1957 and my love of Northern started back in Torquay Devon in about 1971 when I was 14. Went to the local nightclub 'Paradise Castle' was completely amazed by Major Lance the artist that night and all these Northern Dancers on holiday from Wolverhampton. I have kept the faith ever since.

  • hey mogcat, i was only 13 when i went to my first northern night, Mick here from Melbourne, but originally from WOLVERHAMPTON, i was 13 in 1976 about the same time as you and never forgot those days. WOLVERHAMPTON had so many great dancers and also great personalities. text if u r interested and i will give you heaps of songs to listen to

  • I have been watching these "Northern Soul" videos. It is new to me. What an awesome, unique scene. Great soul songs (I have never heard) and cool dancing. If I lived in the UK I could definitely get into it.

  • Forget Wigan, Blackpool & Manchester. The East Midlands is the home of Northern Soul thanks to Carl & Andy!! KTF. :o)

  • I just LOVE this video! Been on my favs for a long lime, whenever i feel low i just turn this on & feel the puls rise & a smile takes over.

    Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn i miss the allnighters!

  • i do exactly the same. i am from cleethorpes. when i watch this video i forget all my troubles and go back in time. the music is like nothing on earth. best time of my life, apart from my kids, good to talk to you, deb

  • This is the coolest dancing I have seen and I thought English men couldn't dance till I saw this. it's great. i don't know anything about Northern Soul but the tunes are great and the dancing looks so good. Does the floor need to be a certain surface or do you have to have a certain type of shoe to be able to do those spins. I have been looking at some clips and I love that move on the one leg with th eother one going back and forward. I want to learn!!!

  • Ok..floor has to be a proper dance floor..polished wood and even better if its sprung..but there were a few floors that were over sprung nd if it was full those in the middle would get bounced by the hundreds on the edge!!! leather soles worked best..later on polyvelts came out...looked shit but were lighter and didn't get clogged by talcum powder and sweat..how to dance...you have to be there to know that one. We're the ones that proved white boys can dance!!!

  • i agree entirely lots of love deb, cornwall

  • IT DOES NOT PROOVE, JUST THAtT WHITE BOYS CAN DANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    WE ALL CAN DANCE!

    WHY? CAUSE WI LOVE IT!

    I CURLY FROM NOTTS NIECE X X

  • haaaaaaHaaaa! Who said that? Line dancin on speed? Green and Clears mate.....

I'm from way back too....we drove up from Cornwall to The Torch, Blackpool Mecca, Up the Junction, Wigan when it got going....just about everywhere from '73 on.........I'm so happy everyones keeping it going. I've been out of the UK most of the time for 16yrs...this has made my weekend. If you know of anything still going on I'll be there....

    Keep on Keepin' On.........Jack

  • These are actually ancient Hyperborean temple dances.

  • That'll be the temples with Conan the Barbarian in Spencer 6 button bags wishing someone would invent talcum powder then!!!!

There were no humans in the Hyperborean Age.....its part of the Mid-Paleozoic age unless you play obscure fantasy games on your computer?!?!?!

  • Nah, talcum powder has always been with us.

The Hyperboreans were not quite what we'd recognise as human. For a start: They had higher waste bands.

  • Oh! Like on a kilt! Now I get your point! HehHeh!!

  • The actual point of Northern dancing is to convert the body into a sort-of tuning fork in order to recieve high-frequency information from higher realms. The Ancient Celts used to do this - hence the rigidity of the arm and leg movements in all that Riverdance stuff. I'm sure the similarity in the words "Celt" and "kilt" is not lost on you. Northern dancing is the result of the collective ancestral memory of it's participants.

  • Fascinating. I was curious about the style of Northern dancing and how it originated. Thanks for the education.

  • Big one coming up at the Bridlington Spa... Its a weekender and gonna be awesome, get yourself there and relive the memories

  • oh by the way it's on 26th 27th and 28th june

  • top sounds

  • Are they wearing heelies?

  • It's like line dancing on speed

  • Hahaha .. sorry ... I'm from back in the day, but your comment tickled me! Line dancing with FEELING though .. ! :o)

  • Who's the lassie dancing to "Time" (15.30 - 16.15)...she's brilliant!!

  • if you like that, I think you would really enjoy house dancing. look through my favorites for anything with keyword "house". to me, it looks like a super evolved version of northern soul

  • Mate...I did just that...you're very good! Are you a professional dancer?

  • thanks. I do it for fun. It's my art and passion

  • Some familiar faces and dance moves in there... fabulous :)

  • Some people should stop being so protective over NS. At the end of the day it is music and we all like music. There is a certain dance that goes along with it if you can do it then good for you, if you can't so what?

  • lovely :_)

  • Scooter boys!!!!! how many scooter rallies have you been on to know how they dance.

  • im 15 and i dance northern soul its just a shame that the place got knocked down an is now rebuil they should do mroe competitions !! i live 2 min away so =]

  • I'd agree with the other geezer too, people didn't dance like that in the heyday, it was floating and gliding. What the fack is all this bouncing around? And most of em are out of sync with the beat. I wonder how many of em were really around when it counted. I bet most of em are scooter boys.

  • I'd agree Modpimp, NS was great in its day, that's the 1970s. I went to the Mecca, Wigan, Yate, Bisley, Reading the lot.

But allnighters are embarrassing today. It looks like something out of "Come Dancing", loads of grannies and grandads doing the foxtrot. My mother went to the Bisley Nightshift recently and she didn't look out of place, and she's retired.

  • You're probably jealous because your wife wont let you out any more, and we're having fun and you're not LOL

  • does anyone know the song at 15:30-17::40. ace tune!

  • time by edwin starr

  • Wallyjumper9 - you obviously are not watching Carl (black guy) who is perfectly in time! I doubt you could compete with him on the dance floor - I've seen him dance and he is really great (and modest too).

  • I would have to agree the blonde with the black vest has great footwork

  • Am I the only person who's noticed that nobody on that floor is remotely in time with any tune played????? I was heavily into the scene in the 80's in Belfast and by god as a 14 year-old kid I'd have wiped this lot out. Sorry but it's true, no point in dancing if you're just performing a set piece regardless of the song, great DJ though...

  • @wollyjumper9 you are an iiiiiiiiijjjitt........... thats idiot in paddyland 80 s ha ha this music was 72 - 77 not 80 s and all the people are over 40...at least,,....can you please send us a photo of yourself and get them to do a video of you dancing to put on you tube of your greatness....

  • that floor must've been perfect. nice and shiny. i wish there was a night like this in los angeles.

  • Now that is what I call dancing. Love the moves.

  • love it I used to go to Wigan casino in the 70's when i was a young un lol wish they'd played my fave tracks tho ...Wigans ovation ..Skiing in the Snow & The Originals ...Suspicion... awesome tracks Keep The Faith

  • The woman with the blonde short hair and black vest is simply awesome...best by a mile!!!

  • Tuffy, absolutley BUT she ONLY got 2nd place...should deffo have won first place

  • hey indeed i do at a landslide maybe the lambrini advert should of researched your post like it m8 nice one

  • Can anyone tell me what the name of the track & artist is that starts to play 1 min 30 secs into the video?

  • the track is called a little togetherness by the young hearts. it is on you tube!!

  • think that might be landslide m8 type it in at limewire or torrent think the the artist is tony clarke but im pissed at min and still watching northern dance comp lol

  • I co-found/started/DJ one of the only northern soul nights here in winnipeg, Manitoba Canada. Watching this makes me see we have a lot of work to do! This is fantastic!!!

    Keep the faith!

  • It was great to see the old days But i have a question to ask anybody out there can you let me no the name of the soloist or band who sung the song P.E.R.S.O.N.A.L.I.T.Y let me no asap and will be much appreciated

  • This is what makes Youtube a miraculous resource. Hilarious, energizing, bewildering, exhilerating, life-affirming, everything a northern soul allnighter should be. Doesn't even matter if you can't do the moves (which I can't), or if you're too old (which I am) you just have to dance and remember that Competition Ain't Nothin'.

  • The lass who got 2nd place were best dancer, footwork was excellent, OK, so nobody was Back Dropping, Head Spinning(Catcombs speciality), the guy who won it deserved to but his footwork was no where near as the 2nd placed dancer....but then what do I know, stuck down here in Luton and not been to an Allnighter since July 1976....and the last bit of vinyl i bought

  • was Angel Baby-Darrel Banks on Uk Atlantic from a boot sale 3 months ago!!!!!!(10P)

  • nar sorry me dads better =D

  • Pure Class! keep the faith!

  • KGB Northern Soul Club,Sheffield,See you all there????

  • Man, roll another fat one. Oh yes

  • The guy who won is by far the best dancer in this video! Every dance step is in time to the music - he is not following anyone! His footwork is amazing too. Guy in white polo was good but not great.

  • can anyone name the 5th song on this video after do i love you by frank wiilson. thanks if you can...

  • just a little togetherness, i think its by the younghearts

  • correct...thanks mate.

  • Saikohda!!

What is the openin' songs name?

    I want to know it!

  • Jimmy Holiday & Clydie King - Ready Willing And Able :)

  • Thank you.

Your sincere soul makes me crazy.

    Here ↓

    watch?v=Mm-i_7zDfxk

  • the one doing the kung fu kicks wants to get a grip

  • yea they are all enjoying their selves, but i think token girl dancer was not good enough. the guy in the white polo shirt should of won, the guy who won followed that guy's lead, the guy put the moves in when expected, please can we be judges next time?

  • This was only 8 years ago but how the dancing has changed! I quite miss it x

  • I agree when i first saw this i remenber winning in 1978 dance comp the mecca in burnley dancing to = first i look at the purse (The contours) and every year me and the lads meet up at king georgrs hall in blackburn

  • The setting looks a bit bizarre but anyone saying that 'people this age...' etc have so missed the point you just have to think those saying such disparaging remarks never 'got' the scene in the first place. I was deep into the mod culture but loved the 'anything goes it's all about the music' vibe of the northern scene. Keep on burning!

  • I suppose modpimp wants all of us over 35 (41 actually) to sit at home watching casualty with a cup of cocoa on a saturday night,no thanks!! we are enjoying ourselves and couldnt give a s**t what other people think, allnitesoulin til i die!!

  • thats not how i remember wigans casino lame

  • Is this a dance comp or people trying to dance to Northern. In the early 70s when you danced to Northern you floated over the floor, not just bouncing up and down like most of these. What has happened to people that could spin?

  • why?

  • Great music, but let's just live with our memories.

  • I'm 37 I guess that makes me old!! I'll alway's KTF regardless of my age :0)

  • Northern Soul allnighters these days are embarrassing. I love Northern Soul, but i went to an allnighter a good few years back where the Contours were performing and it was just full of middle aged couples trying to do moves which there bodies were'nt up to. I'm sure they were cool in their day, but please if your into your Northern allnighters and above 35 then leave the spinning/twists to the younger dancers because you all just look ridiculous.

  • i'd stick to your mod nights ,you obviously havnt got a clue what your talking about, you are missing the main point here, these are people all enjoying themselfs, all enjoying soul music regardless of age

  • If you want to see more NS dancing - type in "uk disco dance championships 1979 part 3" and look out for dancers No.7 and No.13!!

  • great music ,good video

  • Classic Video,What A Strange Dance!

  • didnt know such activites went on in alfreton. It is the Alfreton Derbyshire right?? nice.

  • Never been to Alfreton, might have to check it out after watching that. Nice little film. KTF.

  • They have a reunion every year in july

at the sports centre Well worth a visit

    KTF
