@TheDiddlysquat What else did I say, that Big Three was actually known only in the Liverpool- area? Yes, in Hamburg. And Top40, well, is that a big thing. There were many not so good bands in Top10 like the SBJ, Gerry & The Pacemakers, and so on... So talent hasn't always to do with success, unfortunately... And remember: Lee Curtis & The All Stars, with Pete Best onm drums, was voted as number 2 after The Beatles in Merseybeat-magazine.
Pete Best had nothing special about him, Say what you will about Ringo, his inclusion completed the Beatles, such that Richard Lester knew what to do with him in both films—center a plot around him—he was a Face, iconic from day one AND a musician. Best was basically a lad without any style grace or talent.
His time in the band should be looked upon as a temporary drummer untill a proper drummer could be found.
Its well known that he joined the day before they left for hamburg,
Best gives a more colourful explanation, suggesting he passed the audition and the guys said your in.
But in truth he was going to be in anyway, 2 reasons the first was best had a drum kit and a passport and the second was because they used his mothers cafe to practice in.
So a mixture of blackmail on Best's part and desperation on McCartney, lennon and harrisons part all lead to him being in the band.
Best never became famous except for his connection to the other 3
Pete seems very kind, but he mumbled alot, and didn't have that spark Ringo did. Ringo could light up a room with that smile, and the Beatles needed that.
@TheDiddlysquat I think most people are aware of Pete Best trying to gas himself out of absolute despair.
And his failure to make any impact on the music world of his own, he is trying to appear forgiving but we are all aware that he was deeply upset by the whole thing.
He now tours the world telling everyone that will listen " i use to be in the bealtes"
Its very sad that he never managed to let go and get on with his life instead of talking endlessly about his days as a Beatle
@TheDiddlysquat Best may have got a nice amount from the anthology, but that was 30+ years after the fact. These assumptions you have about Pete Best are absurd. I've met Best and he is actually a fan of the beatles music.
Did they really kick him out because he was handsome? I mean Paul is also pretty cute but he also had the necessary talent in band. It's too easy to blame it on jealousy of his looks but if he was 'really' an asset to the band he would have been kept around. It was the early days when the band was just forming into what it would become and IIRC they had used different drummers before and Best wasn't always around.
It worked out great anyways because we got sweet Ringo.
@lushie Just got back from Liverpool. We took a private cab tour of the Beatles places where they played, etc. The guide said that Pete was knocked out of the band due to the girls looking over the other three and focusing on Pete. When you listen to both drummers it is apparent to me that Ringo had something unique. Mona Best was cited as also being a factor due to her over involvement with the band. Maybe like the Beach Boys having to deal with their father Maury Wilson?
@friedchickenlittle You're wrong for three reasons. 1. When they kicked Pete Best out, they approached not Ringo but Johnny Hutchinson of The Big Three. He turned them down. THEN they approached Ringo. 2. Although I can see why a lot of people think Ringo is Jewish, he has no Jewish connection racial or religious. 3. Listen to the records of Pete Best playing with The Beatles. It is obvious why he was kicked out. He's just not good enough.
@tigranvartanovitch Ringo Starkey is a jew it's in the surname plus he readily admits he's jewish. Best was the better drummer... George Martin, ( also a jew), found Ringo and he wanted him in the band that is in the official Beatles History. If you aren't jewish you won't make it in the popular music and film indusrty.
@Nickofaballooni Yes, I understand. So Goldberg and Horowitz adopted the Irish names Lennon and McCartney to make everyone think they were Gentiles. It's all beginning to make sense now.
@tigranvartanovitch .... if you do not believe Ringo is Jewish then why don't you ask him.... he openly admits he is. As for the others well, I won't get into that but there are many believers in Jewish World domination theories..... I'm one of them. Best was sacked to open a door for Ringo.
@tigranvartanovitch ....The names theJewish families adopt are mainly adopted shortly after they arrived in the country so they may have changed some years back.... this is done so they 'fit in' ....didn't you know this.... gawd! There are thousands of easily accessible examples... if you want some just let me know. Humans aren't as stupid as jews take them to be.
@Nickofaballooni Yes, I knew it. The Three Stooges - Horowitz and Feinberg became Howard and Fine. Goldfisch became Goldwyn. Did you know that the woman who has married Prince William of Britain is a Rothschild, and her name is Middleton? [True.]
@tigranvartanovitch ....Yes I knew that... here in the UK we are I think more aware than American citizens of the Jewsih influence, maybe because it's come from the USA and it was seen coming. We also believe strongly that there is an Obama link to Judaism. There was a lot of publicity here when your senators' applauded The Isreali PM at the Whitehouse following his 'rallying' speech recently.
beatle songs are easy drumming-what point to be made that he couldn't command the songs? gimme a break. They were jealous of his looks, and wanted a member on the beatles to be part jewish.
Those bastards had 2 years to replace Best if he was such a bad drummer. And the nerve of John, Paul, and George not having the balls to tell him to his face that they were sacking him and going behind his back to find another drummer. Karma will get Sir Paul next just like it got John and George.
@MrBobbyfuller lennon wanted best out of the band as soon as they started playing in hamburg.
Best could not play, if he could then he would have stayed in the band or found fame himself, neither of those things happened, if as mona stated was correct and best had a large fan base then they never bought his records did they..
Best didnt fit in, he was middle class, didnt say much, often claimed he was sick while they were in hamburg and didnt play... ringo stepped in on quite times
To top everything else off, Neil Aspinall, the Beatles road manager/confidant was Pete Best's best friend, and actually went on to have a child out of wedlock with Mona Best, Pete's mother!!!
I love The Beatles but Mona gave them their big break suggesting to The Cavern's owner that they play there. George is my favourite but like George, I believe in karma. From all The Beatles Pete is the only one still in a loving relationship with his first and only wife. The rest should have been nicer to Pete, he's such a lovely and humble man :)
2. Starr - single version - ultimately replaced with...
3. White version (on which Ringo played tambourine). The original version with Ringo was deleted and the master destroyed. Subsequent pressings of Love Me Do were the White version. It wasn't until "Rarities" was issued in the 80s that the Ringo version was re-issued, a new master having been made from a very clean copy of the original single.
Simply put, (with all respects to Pete) anyone that knows music and more specifically drumming knows that Ringo's heavy handed playing style better suited the Beatles. His use of the backbeat helped make the Beatles sound. (not to mention his personality) There is more than enough tunes here on YouTube that has Pete and Ringo playing the same song to be able to compare. Remember, anything post August '62 is Ringo.
@Ottoboy111 ...The drummers would have not arranged their own beat, it was all arranged for them by the likes of George Martin so that arguement doesn't hold. Check it out, it's on the records..... under: "arranged by......."
@Nickofaballooni .. Martin himself admits the only member in the band he told what to play was George H. and only in a few songs and only until mid '64. Arranging consists mainly of where to put the chorus, verse and middle 8 ect. Like Martin's idea to start "She Loves You" with the Chorus. Martin was NO drummer and Ringo's heavy handed style and rock solid tempo is what musically endeared him to the Beatles. To think Martin told Ringo what beat to play is just plain dumb.
@Ottoboy111 ... Martin employed a group of arrangers, their job was to take apart what had been written and restructure it. They did far more in those days than they do today, I know I was in a band in 1964 and we recorded at the early Decca Studio in Denmark Street. One distinct memory was being told to finish on an 'A 6th' chord instead of 'A'; it made our up-beat song sound like a dance band number grrrr.... Remember a lot of what you read is written for you to believe... lol.
@Nickofaballooni ..You must be forgetting that the Beatles were doing their OWN SONGS which back in the day was unusual. You are dead wrong about Martin using arrangers for the Beatles. Studio logs show the group introducing and recording songs the same day. Most recording sessions 62-66 taking place between live gigs and tours. I'm sure Martin had those arrangers travelling with the Beatles to help them write the songs so they could be recorded in so few takes as they did as so few days. NOT.
@Ottoboy111 ...I haven't forgotten, they like most bands did their own songs mixed in with others peoples work. Just like the band I was in. Yes, they may have recorded songs in a couple of hours, just like we did, but post editing was available albeit it only 4 track, (4 was often bounced to give 8). There was much post editing to the beatles work. Believe me, it can be heard on many tracks. I was there in that environment in the 1960/70's.
I've met Peter Best, when he did a question and answer session in Liverpool. He seems very cool about everything to be honest and said he bears no grudges. He even owns all of the records The Beatles ever made.
Yes Tom, I have met Pete Best myself. He has certianly made a success of his life. It's time for the people who keep bashing him, or think they can speak on his behalf to do the same.
@TomTresh3 I met him at the Fest For Beatles Fans 2004, at the Meadowlands. Took a picture with him. Beforehand, he was one of the many celebrity guests that appear at the auditorium they have there. He didn't play any music. It was just a Q & A session, mostly narrowed down to his Beatle days and the question of why he was kicked out of the band, of which I was surprised, then, that he didn't know the definitive answer to.
George Martin said that Pete shouldn't be boot off, only in record-sessions (at least for beginning) not live performances. Martin didn't like Ringos' drumming either in the beginning. Maby Martin wasn't too familiar with the beat-sound at the beginning. But in my opinnion Pete was at least so good as Ringo was, you just have to listen the recordings with Tony Sheridan. Pete's beat is very solid and loud. Also you should watch The Pete Best Story.
The normal thing in those days was to have a session drummer for studio work who knew the ways of the studio and producers. Martin knew he was sacked when Mona Best rang him wanting to know why.
Hardly, he's spent the last 45 years writing books, doing interviews and making documentaries about it. I wouldn't call that moving on. And I don't blame him, it would be such a bitter pill.
It's part of his career. He get's paid for it. He's not doing it because he's bitter, he gets paid big bucks from TV, Radio and other media to talk about his Beatles days. He's not doing it for free. He's made at the very least many hundred's of thousands of pounds (if not a million or more) from these books, interviews and documentaries. If they paid him to talk about the time he worked in the Job center, or in the bakery he'd be doing that instead!
Yeah course he gets paid for it. But there's no denying that it changed his life forever. And I never said he was bitter, I simply said I felt for him because I don't think anyone would fully get over something that life changing.
It didn't change his life, because his future hadn't happend yet. It merely had an influence on his future, like many other events. The person who should be allowed to say wheter he is fully over it or not is the man himself. Pete say's he is, and that's good enough. Anything else from an outside person is mere speculation and worthless.
Well then how about you stop speculating. I made a comment saying I felt for him. That's all. I didn't expect to be thrust into a debate about causality. We're not really making any ground here, I think there is no way someone could fully get over being kicked out of The Beatles, you disagree, lets leave it there bro.
You have not been "thrust" into it, you choose to reply. I'm not speculating, I've read his books, i've seen his interviews and I've also met the man and had a one on one conversation with him. That's not speculation, that's allowing Best to be the one to say whether or not he's over it, which is the way it should be. He seems to think there is much more to life than being a famous rock star, to say there is "no way" that can be true is very pretentious.
Um, dude, do you seriously think that he got over that? Just days before they recorded their first record, he got up and left. Then they got all awesome and famous. Do you think any man had ever kicked himself quite as much as him? Honestly dude. You think he's over that???? There's this new thing. It's called lying. He can very easily lie and say he's over it.
Yes I do think he's over it actually. Who are you to say he is lying? what famous group were you kicked out of, maybe then your hot air would account for something. However, it dosen't. Have you met Pete Best? I doubt you have. I have. I believe him when he say's he is a family man and happy with his life. It's stupid to say he's lying five decades on. People get over things as bad as this all the time. There are plenty of ex-businessmen that lost a whole lot more than Pete Best ever did.
Best did not get up and leave. He was fired. And was never given a real reason. He played Love Me Do, their first hit, at Abbey Rd studios on their first recording session, released on Anthology - he got royalties :)
The reasons for the sacking are easy to put together. Mona was still interfering in the band after Epstein took over - may have been justified to do so. She also had a baby to the Beatles Rd manager Neil Aspinall 2 weeks before the sacking. Others as well
Tony Sheridan and the Beatles -including Pete Best- made a record and had a minor hit with 'My Bonnie'. This was at the request of Bert Kamfert who wanted to record them. I owned that album; and for its time - it's not bad. This same record is what got the attention of Brian Epstein, who was curious enough to check The Beatles out in Liddypool after a few requests from custumers for the record 'My Bonnie' came in to his record shop.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
They had big plans with ultra gay movies and Beatle hair cuts. Paul and John were affraid that this suave, macho man would steel the spot light, groupies, and butt in on the song writing. This ole mate didn't fit the bill. They needed a quiet, shy, coward sheep, dope, that was Ringo Starr.
Martin even said that Best was the key for succes when it comes to the looks. He didn't want Pete out and was quite shocked when he heard that he was sacked.
Love Me Do was recorded by White and Ringo...and Best. The UK single was Ringo, all others were mainly White. Ringo thought White was on the UK single, he wasn't it was him.
The Beatles replaced Pete Best because the producer of their first record said he wasn't a good drummer. They had already played gigs with Ringo and they knew what he could bring to the group. Replacing Pete Best was one of the many good decisions the band made on their way to superstardon.
Not crap you don't know what your talkin about if you watched the anthology you obviously didn't pay attention because that came straight from the anthology that he didn't show up for some gigs nice try though I don't pull facts outta my ass like some folks so go re-watch I doubt they would put bullshit on it so yea go back and watch then tell me that close your mouth the crap is leaking and I never said I didn't like Best sorry if I tried to lay some facts on yall ignorance is bliss i guess
It is crap --- was Best interview for the anthology to give his side of the story? Of course not! Look at the pictures of the Beatles back in the day when he was the drummer. If Best missed so many gigs then how come he is in most of the photos? Case closed!
George Harrison said it was Tommy Moore. They did yours of Scotland backing Jonny Gentle. Best replaced him.
His girlfriend would attack Tommy and the Beatles when they got home late. He left the band because of her. For a few weeks they had a drummer between Moore and Best, Norman Chapman, who was off the uni and turned down the permanent position.
Tommy died in obscurity about 10 years back. 12 attended his funeral.
Yeah pity for George Harrison. He would not have been eternally labeled "the quiet Beatle". Anyway Pete did the hard yards with them. Ringo is just the luckiest drummer in the world really albeit a good one but not brilliant. As one other comment said Pete would have probably improved under the guidance of George Martin like they all did. Go Pete!!!!!
George Martin said Pete could stay in the band for live gigs etc. but that he wanted a professional if any studio recordings were to be done. That was enough for the other Beatles to get Pete out.
Yeah thats true but he did say he didn't care if they kept him for live performances. It comes down to doing what you need to do to get that success. In my opinion Pete was used until they had better options. Thats what is so sad. They had other drummers, Tommy Moore on the Scotland tour for eg. After Pete joined he stuck around through Hamburg days and up to the Sessions with Martin. Why did they not replace him sooner if he was so bad? Epstein might have done it sooner too. That's Show biz.
Please provide a link for this. I have heard PC's praise of Ringo but still stand by my point. Even Lennon said "Ringo wasn't the best drummer in the beatles" refering to the fact that Paul could hold his own against Ringo. Thanks for the discussion.
@MrGuypod If Lennon actually said this, it was certainly a quip. Ringo is an incredible drummer and even Paul said he was in the top three of all time (Moon and Bonham being the other two.)
@rockburgerking Well perhaps you are right and it was a quip but Lennon often said what he thought, didn't he. Personally speaking I think Ringo is a very fine drummer.
You are absolutely correct. The success of the beatles depended on many things and the chemistry between its members was absolutely essential. Pete Best, who from all accounts seems like a decent guy, just did not fit in with the other three. It is so obvious here and would be to anyone who cares to understand.
Ringo's use of the ride cymbal and open hi-hat made a HUGE difference in the Beatle's sound, just check it out, and compare to Pete Best's rather choppy sounding hi-hat work. This loosened up the band's sound very much. Pete did get a raw deal, that's why the Boys let their manager sack him. I'm glad he finally got some real money from Anthology, he desereved it!
Interesting. Notice how its a Pete Best interview, yet his mom does most of the talking. Its obvious that Pete didn't fit in with the others personalities at all.
I gotta agree with you. Pete, has John said, was a drag. He wasn't a part the inner circle of the group. He didn't drink or experiment with drugs while in Hamburg. Didn't really socialize with them either...so I've read. I'm sure a little jealousy was there but as John said to Brian:"Pete is a good drummer. Ringo is a better Beatle."
Hello you all1

@TheDiddlysquat I think most people are aware of Pete Best trying to gas himself out of absolute despair.
And his failure to make any impact on the music world of his own, he is trying to appear forgiving but we are all aware that he was deeply upset by the whole thing.
He now tours the world telling everyone that will listen " i use to be in the bealtes"
Its very sad that he never managed to let go and get on with his life instead of talking endlessly about his days as a Beatle
kevinturvy 1 year ago
@TheDiddlysquat Best may have got a nice amount from the anthology, but that was 30+ years after the fact. These assumptions you have about Pete Best are absurd. I've met Best and he is actually a fan of the beatles music.

Did they really kick him out because he was handsome? I mean Paul is also pretty cute but he also had the necessary talent in band. It's too easy to blame it on jealousy of his looks but if he was 'really' an asset to the band he would have been kept around. It was the early days when the band was just forming into what it would become and IIRC they had used different drummers before and Best wasn't always around.
It worked out great anyways because we got sweet Ringo.
lushie 1 year ago 10
@lushie Just got back from Liverpool. We took a private cab tour of the Beatles places where they played, etc. The guide said that Pete was knocked out of the band due to the girls looking over the other three and focusing on Pete. When you listen to both drummers it is apparent to me that Ringo had something unique. Mona Best was cited as also being a factor due to her over involvement with the band. Maybe like the Beach Boys having to deal with their father Maury Wilson?

You are wrong. Recordings at Abbey Rd:
1st - Best - rehearsal
2nd - Starr - rehearsal
3rd - Starr/White - full recording
NearAbbeyRoad 2 years ago
@NearAbbeyRoad actually you are wrong
1. Best - artist test

You are incorrect. The Ringo version went out as a single in the UK. The White version on the US pressed album.
NearAbbeyRoad 1 year ago
Simply put, (with all respects to Pete) anyone that knows music and more specifically drumming knows that Ringo's heavy handed playing style better suited the Beatles. His use of the backbeat helped make the Beatles sound. (not to mention his personality) There is more than enough tunes here on YouTube that has Pete and Ringo playing the same song to be able to compare. Remember, anything post August '62 is Ringo.
Ottoboy111 2 years ago
@Ottoboy111
Tommy Hutchinson of The Big Three says he was offered the drummers job when Pete was sacked and turned it down. Ringo was second choice.
NearAbbeyRoad 2 years ago
@Ottoboy111 ...The drummers would have not arranged their own beat, it was all arranged for them by the likes of George Martin so that arguement doesn't hold. Check it out, it's on the records..... under: "arranged by......."
Nickofaballooni 8 months ago
@Nickofaballooni .. Martin himself admits the only member in the band he told what to play was George H. and only in a few songs and only until mid '64. Arranging consists mainly of where to put the chorus, verse and middle 8 ect. Like Martin's idea to start "She Loves You" with the Chorus. Martin was NO drummer and Ringo's heavy handed style and rock solid tempo is what musically endeared him to the Beatles. To think Martin told Ringo what beat to play is just plain dumb.
Ottoboy111 8 months ago
@Ottoboy111 ... Martin employed a group of arrangers, their job was to take apart what had been written and restructure it. They did far more in those days than they do today, I know I was in a band in 1964 and we recorded at the early Decca Studio in Denmark Street. One distinct memory was being told to finish on an 'A 6th' chord instead of 'A'; it made our up-beat song sound like a dance band number grrrr.... Remember a lot of what you read is written for you to believe... lol.
Nickofaballooni 8 months ago
@Nickofaballooni ..You must be forgetting that the Beatles were doing their OWN SONGS which back in the day was unusual. You are dead wrong about Martin using arrangers for the Beatles. Studio logs show the group introducing and recording songs the same day. Most recording sessions 62-66 taking place between live gigs and tours. I'm sure Martin had those arrangers travelling with the Beatles to help them write the songs so they could be recorded in so few takes as they did as so few days. NOT.
Ottoboy111 8 months ago
@Ottoboy111 ...I haven't forgotten, they like most bands did their own songs mixed in with others peoples work. Just like the band I was in. Yes, they may have recorded songs in a couple of hours, just like we did, but post editing was available albeit it only 4 track, (4 was often bounced to give 8). There was much post editing to the beatles work. Believe me, it can be heard on many tracks. I was there in that environment in the 1960/70's.

Also you should watch The Pete Best Story.
timotastic 2 years ago
@timotastic
The normal thing in those days was to have a session drummer for studio work who knew the ways of the studio and producers. Martin knew he was sacked when Mona Best rang him wanting to know why.
NearAbbeyRoad 2 years ago

24liam24 2 years ago
Maybe in the early 60s, but not anymore. Pete Best has made the most of his life and 45 years on, like the rest of the world, Best has moved on.
FabFM 2 years ago 2
Hardly, he's spent the last 45 years writing books, doing interviews and making documentaries about it. I wouldn't call that moving on. And I don't blame him, it would be such a bitter pill.
24liam24 2 years ago
It's part of his career. He get's paid for it. He's not doing it because he's bitter, he gets paid big bucks from TV, Radio and other media to talk about his Beatles days. He's not doing it for free. He's made at the very least many hundred's of thousands of pounds (if not a million or more) from these books, interviews and documentaries. If they paid him to talk about the time he worked in the Job center, or in the bakery he'd be doing that instead!
FabFM 2 years ago
Yeah course he gets paid for it. But there's no denying that it changed his life forever. And I never said he was bitter, I simply said I felt for him because I don't think anyone would fully get over something that life changing.
24liam24 2 years ago
It didn't change his life, because his future hadn't happend yet. It merely had an influence on his future, like many other events. The person who should be allowed to say wheter he is fully over it or not is the man himself. Pete say's he is, and that's good enough. Anything else from an outside person is mere speculation and worthless.
FabFM 2 years ago
Well then how about you stop speculating. I made a comment saying I felt for him. That's all. I didn't expect to be thrust into a debate about causality. We're not really making any ground here, I think there is no way someone could fully get over being kicked out of The Beatles, you disagree, lets leave it there bro.
24liam24 2 years ago
You have not been "thrust" into it, you choose to reply. I'm not speculating, I've read his books, i've seen his interviews and I've also met the man and had a one on one conversation with him. That's not speculation, that's allowing Best to be the one to say whether or not he's over it, which is the way it should be. He seems to think there is much more to life than being a famous rock star, to say there is "no way" that can be true is very pretentious.
FabFM 2 years ago
I also CHOOSE not to believe you.
24liam24 2 years ago

FabFM 2 years ago
Um, dude, do you seriously think that he got over that? Just days before they recorded their first record, he got up and left. Then they got all awesome and famous. Do you think any man had ever kicked himself quite as much as him? Honestly dude. You think he's over that???? There's this new thing. It's called lying. He can very easily lie and say he's over it.
ILoveLiverpuddlians 2 years ago
Yes I do think he's over it actually. Who are you to say he is lying? what famous group were you kicked out of, maybe then your hot air would account for something. However, it dosen't. Have you met Pete Best? I doubt you have. I have. I believe him when he say's he is a family man and happy with his life. It's stupid to say he's lying five decades on. People get over things as bad as this all the time. There are plenty of ex-businessmen that lost a whole lot more than Pete Best ever did.
FabFM 2 years ago
@ILoveLiverpuddlians

The rest is history...

Yeah pity for George Harrison. He would not have been eternally labeled "the quiet Beatle". Anyway Pete did the hard yards with them. George Martin said Pete could stay in the band for live gigs etc. but that he wanted a professional if any studio recordings were to be done. That was enough for the other Beatles to get Pete out.
RoadienicknamedRor 2 years ago
Yeah thats true but he did say he didn't care if they kept him for live performances. It comes down to doing what you need to do to get that success. In my opinion Pete was used until they had better options. Thats what is so sad. They had other drummers, Tommy Moore on the Scotland tour for eg. After Pete joined he stuck around through Hamburg days and up to the Sessions with Martin. Why did they not replace him sooner if he was so bad? Epstein might have done it sooner too. That's Show biz.
