I used to not be able to get my head around Greg Osby but this just showed me where he's at. In the context of this kind of groove and in the context of his own very cerebral compositions, he plays the same hehe. I went from dubiously unsure to totally into this. I like how true to his personality his playing is.
Ok. Interesting. They didnt even give him an audience. Greg is talking shit too! LOL The piano player (Darryl Grant) played a much better, more coherent solo. I think this is in the 80's..this is ok...
This is very interesting for a lot of reasons. The main one is that Oz is playing exactly as he does on anything else. He didn't go "smooth" or try to be funky on purpose just because the tune has a groove. His style is very effective here, even with all of the tension in it. He makes it work. It's great!
He really tricked me in this song. I thought he was gonna play some smooth jazz stuff then he starts super imposing in his solo and my jaw dropped! Osby is so sick.
He is definitely playing some advanced harmonies here. It all makes sense though. I've transcribed this one and other solos of Osby. Here he's playing on a Selmer Mark VII alto. and Vandoren A75 mouthpiece that he used back in the 90's.
i'd love to see what you've got for a transcription of this tune, it's such a cool solo. i did one out of his tune gutterman but it's handwrite... other wise i've got a kenny garret solo i could swap?
the unusual thing is he has that polished tone, which has some smooth jazz qualities, however he is playing a lot of out out notes. But I don't follow how he is using those out notes. I found the solo mechanical sounding which was covered up by his sweet tone. The out notes are not out in the way Coltrane would choose. Obviously we don't need Coltrane or Kenny Garret clones. He is original. I like out playing. But I just can't grasp his out playing, where it's coming from. ??
they got nice groove and they are all great players. its just bad that they play this tune in this tempo in this bit, sounds awfull all together, like cold soup.
Cold soup? That's completely disrespectful. Why don't you post a link with a sample of YOU playing so we can see how it should be done. Show us the way.
startrevolution? Your comment is ANTI-revolutionary. Dexter Gordon isn't the composer of this tune and Osby is as entitled as anybody to interpret it in any way he chooses. It's the same tune, just done with a groove. DAMN, lighten up!

Joke:
What do you get if you mix together Little Richard, Wesley Snipes and Eddie Murphy?
You get Greg Osby's piano player.
OH WAIT it get's better (or worse?)... I just saw the rest of this video:
Jamie Fox on sax
"Little" Wesley Murphy on piano
Steve Urkel on bass
(Now I can't even watch this video with straight face anymore. Too bad too, Mr. Osby is a hell of a cat.)

Osby is on a whole other level. At times, in the solo, it seems like there is a bi-tonal thing going on. I love it.

The mentioning of the setup was kind of random.

Just thought I'd list it for my fellow gear-heads. Especially since the Mark VII never caught on as a popular horn.

this is awesome! an insult to dexter gordon?? are you kidding? This is an honor to the music that is being played at the moment.

smooth?! blasphemy and an insult to Dexter Gordon who swung this song in typical killin' fashion.
I didn't know Osby ever caved like this!
