  • I had an actual obsession with this recording ...i used to rush home from work just to soothe my soul...it is the most beautiful thing i have ever heard...Thank you!

  • What a beautiful performance. Brava. Von Karajan seems very moved at the end.

  • This reminds me why she is my favorite soprano... Not only does she have a clear light soubrette voice, but she can sing this lyric line with such resonance! It almost looks too easy for her. Too bad her attitude got in the way of a great career.

  • She is very young in this and is definitely not lip-synching. It's gorgeous.

  • This is the first ime I have heard Miss Battle sing this. It will not be the last time. I can hardly see to type as my tears flow. The power of Miss Battle's voice and the strains of the choir are just perfect.

  • Miraculous.

  • Many have sung this lovely. Maybe Elisabeth Grummer better than anybody else. But Battle is doing the performance of her life. That Karajan would permit his soprano to singback seems totally absurd. And, to be honest, I do not care, because Battle has sung this close to perfection. It is simply sublime !!!!

  • reminds me of my grandma. she was also a singer like this beautiful lady...i miss her.

  • That is the one.

  • . And ye now therefore have sorrow:

but I will see you again,

    and your heart shall rejoice,

and your joy no man taketh from you.

    (Choir: Thee will I comfort

as one whom a mother comforts.)

Look on me: for a short time

I have had sorrow and labour

    and have found great comfort.

  • thank you for the translation!

  • Kathleen Battle has absolutely SCRUMTIOUS vocal quality and musical sensitivity in this recording. I am saying recording, because I absolutely agree with Elaine. If you have ever seen Ms. Battle sing live, as I am sure many of you have, you obviously know she did not possess the most composed peaceful face while making tone. That being said, the overall movement did not move me as it usually does. I believe that this movement requires forward momentum and a text derived cathartic musicality.

  • @Patrick2575 Lip singing? Karajan would NEVER have permitted such disgraceful technical grafting. This is certainly a LIVE performance. Battle could not have faked the breathing dynamics that are evident in her singing in this video. Her vocal chords are anatomically functioning -as is obvious from her movements in her throat.

  • She is there. In the shots that are panned out of the whole stage, you can see her standing in front of the organ with what looks like a spot light on her.

  • finally an opera singer you can truly understand!

  • Not true-she is standing near the organ, above and behind the orchestra and choir!

  • ANGLE VOICE

  • Pure perfection..

  • on dirait un oiseau! cette voix est divine, divine!

  • Perfecta!.

  • I have to agree with the lip synching comment. She would normally be contorting her face into all sorts of wonderful expressions. But the voice is simply magnificent.

  • I am nothing but a fan of this, but it is plain that Battle is lip synching—or that the shots of her were shot after. I know Battle's singing well, and she does not make those sounds with such a placid face. There is no sound coming out of her in these shots.

  • @disneylandman66 maybe so, but there must be some sound coming out of her, otherwise her vocal chords wouldnt be making her throat expand.

  • @disneylandman66 . Beautiful, but lip synched. It looks like a live concert, yet you never see her on stage in front of the orchestra or next to the conductor where a soloist or group of soloists would be. Also, no chorus shots. Perhaps scheduling difficulties or some other conflict kept her away when this was recorded. What bothers me is that this gives a tv audience, not the same as a live audince, an unrealistic view of what it takes to produce such ravishing sounds.

  • She's so beautiful and has a voice to match. I want to get her pregnant, hahaha!

  • i should behave so badly...

  • How can mere words describe such a magnificent performance? Thank you for this musical treasure!

  • In her prime she left you speechless. The highest of highs and the lowest of lows with this woman, have to love her regardless.

  • Kathleen Battle in her prime. Von Karajan looks mesmerized. Fantastic! Thank you.

  • She really did have the most beautiful, ravishing voice! Brava Diva!

  • Simply Karajan.

    5/5

  • A performance of rapt concentration where, visually, Karajan seems to 'play' the sounds with his hands, seeming totally involved. Kathleen Battle is sublime; with singing like this, it's hard to credit her reputation for bad behaviour!

  • @paulprocopolis La Battle canta così perchè glielo ha insegnato Herbert!
