Im thinking about getting a PSD... 6.4s & 6.7s are pretty far out of my price range but the 7.3 and the 6.0 are pretty inline with what im willing to spend. Knowing the 6.0s make more power (stock) than the 7.3s (pretty big deciding factor) is it really worth it to roll the dice on a 6.0 when I can do some mods (chip, exhaust, etc) to a 7.3 to have it make more power?
Truck will have 100-160k Miles
Top 3 things to me are reliability, mpg, and the power
I have a 2000 F250 7.3 powerstroke turbo. It was running fine like a month ago and then i let my buddy use it one night and he went to start it in the morning and it would start but as soon as it got warmed up it died. What could be the issue? Your help would be awesome.
Thanks, i dont think it has ever had a lift pump sense i had it, back tank leaks, woundering if that could cause a leak in the system, i sure love the 7.3 idi, not to many issues with it until now, with the loss of prime. what brand oil works best for that, like rotella. just woundering, thanks for all your advice, sure helps, i watch alot of your stuff, you seem very smart. sense that right away, a grew up around engines, certified chrysler tech, it helps. !!
question for you, my 91 ford truck 7.3 idi diesel, start up and dies after 10 sec, then it takes about 25 seconds to get it to run, once it is running its fine even after work it will start, but sitting over night, its a bear, could it be a lift pump, also there is thousand of miles on it, could i even put in prolong, or no, is rotella better then mobile delvac, thanks, ps can you add me to your friend list, thanks you!!!!!
@MASTERTECH548 You may have a injector pump going bad but before I went to all the trouble I'd replace the lift/supply (on the passenger front of the motor) pump first. I have found that about 40% of the time that fixes the problem. Use a Ford lift pump only. The aftermarket pumps tend to leak in about a year.
@MASTERTECH548 sucking air! i go threw it everyday...check all fuel line connections and buy that injector return line kit its like 70 bucks works great.Check the fuel filter as well
@powerstrokehelp what are your comments about the 7.3 liter with just the turbo and not the powerstroke made it 1994 i believe ? i was looking to purchase one is this a good idea...??
@MASTERTECH548 there is a leak in the system causing the diesel to run back into the tank over night. this means when you start it in the morn it will run for a short while (as it is useing the diesel in the pump) then will cut out as there is air in the system. it is a bitch to start because it is bleeding itseft again. most common cause of this is fuel leak off pipes running from injector to injector, replace them first as they are very cheap and easy to fit and see what happens
How much could I pick up a powerstroke for? I don't really care about mileage, just functionality mainly. I saw your video on buying a powerstroke, that was helpful. I just want to find one I can use.
I know your mainly a powerstroke guy but any chance of you doing a build out or comparison on the cummins or duramax line im looking at buying a diesel truck and have alot of experience with the 6.0 ford and 12 valve cummins but thats about it
@MrSlevin22 I would love to do a comparison between dodge and chevy but I don't know anything about them except that I dont know. When I say we ONLY do PowerStrokes I mean that is all that comes in my shop.
@thesmalls5 Probably not but thanks for the positive feedback. My focus is to take the engines developed by the joint venture between Navistar and Ford and makethem better. Ford DID NOT have control of the development of these engines but Ford was left holding the bag on the shortcomings of the design. The new 6.7L is the first Ford only Powerstroke Engine and it is proving to bea great design.
good to see someone out there that wants to help the designs and not just bad mouth them!!! you have some awesome tips and tricks as well! keep up the good work!!!
i think you should be a engineer at ford and thanks for the infos but at last would you say the 7.3 is the best way to go cause i m looking for an excursion anytime soon. Thanks
Dude!! I got 220000 on my 99 1/2 7.3. All original except 4 in exhaust no muffler and AFE stage 2 cold air intake. No problems at all. Auto trans is hanging tough. Thinking about a billet torque converter and a new hpo pump. What do you think. Great vids. Taught me a lot. Thanks
so would you say that reliability of the 6.4l could be as good as a 7.3l if the 6.4l were kept stock except for a dpf delete, egr delete, and some minor tune to clear codes from removing all the emission crap? I really want a 6.4L just have heard some horror stories concerning them.
YES, YOU ARE RIGHT ABOUT THE CAB REMOVAL!! I worked at a FORD dealership in New York and that is what they had to do in order to get the proper clearance to remove it. WHAT A NIGHTMARE! The "do-it-yourslef-er"is not gonna' try that in his driveway! They had the whole cab elevated with a lift while the truck remained on the ground in the work-bay; it looked like the truck was back on the assembly line in Detroit! I hope this is not ture for the 6.7, as they need to consider serviceability!
Pull the cab off the truck to make a part change. Why couldn't Ford design it with a taller hood or anything similar so you can pull a part without pulling the cab?
By the way, how much does it cost to pull the cab vs if you did not have to pull the cab?
@spencnaz here we go again, more ,more ,more this is the thinking at ford and look where it gets us . THE NEW 2010 SUPER DUTY with more ! i have a 92 E350 idi non turbo . it does everything i need it to do, with easy to get to parts ! a truck should be a truck , last 30 years and spend its last days rusted out on some woods trail haling wood ..... that's a truck ! KISS-keep it simple stupid
I would love to come work in your shop BIll. If you ever end up needing another tech, I would come in a heartbeat. I already own a new 6.4 powerstroke, I would just drive it up there.
When I was looking for a used dually, people that owned Fords told me to get a 7.3. if I was looking for a diesel. They all felt like it was the most durable.
We only have 55 gallon drums of oil, so I think we could spare a drop or two. Such is the evolution of our video skills. By the time I got to editing the 7.3 and the 6.0 were already back in their respective trucks and rolling down the road, so it was impossible to refilm.
Absolutely superb video! Cant wait to watch the rest of the series. I learn so much about my 6.0L and the other Powerstrokes watching these. I know most of the facts and specs that your giving, but the way you present the info and show things on the engine is amazing.

@bertman668 You better look over that 6.0 close and have some money in the bank to bulletproof it if the head gaskets are failing.

@powerstrokehelp thanks, ill def do a lot of research on the truck before i buy one. and have it looked over by a nearby diesel shop.
Then 9/10 ill drive it up to you and bulletproof it.

@killaparty Impossible to say without looking at it. it could be a dozen different things. Have you pulled the diagnostic codes from the PCM?

@killaparty it could be the CPS. the crankshaft position sensor

what do you think about the new 7.3 black mamba thats a crate motor only? think its economy is better??
Boonandcrocket69 4 months ago
@Boonandcrocket69 It is a performance engine with high flow injectors so if you are buying it for fuel economy I think you will be disappointed.

@rberg31 Nothing beats the reliability of a 7.3. Most all the problems of the 6.4 can be traced back to the emissions which can be very problematic.
