though he's got a really flexible body, he definitely doesn't have the presence the monks have...which makes the movements really sucking! energy is the key!
I am still taking in the live performance at the Brisbane Festival. The imagery, energy and movement left me in awe. This is what spirituality is all about. How do we translate this discipline into our culture and community?
Amazing - shame this does nothing to capture the humour of the piece
Seeing the full show you might notice the continuation of themes - east & west, maybe even capitalism & communism. The 'wall' certainly brings Berlin to mind.
Wonder if the relationship between the kid and 'Cherkaoui' is about the open-mindedness of youth; C teaches him - they are friends, yet the boy is drawn back to the traditions expected of him by the other monks. Fascinating! And, as it happens, perfect for theatre . . .
These are only empty forms, no message . Shaolin may be good for Hong Kong moveies or training for policemen, but not for theater. There is no spirituality in it, so wjay call it Sutra?
You should have watched the whole piece, not just a trailer. ;-)
I´ve seen it yesterday on tv and the choreography is brilliant. theres so much understanding in it, you can feel something in your chest, when they are telling you a story about human nature. Its a really good piece, and I´m glad i had the chance to see it.
its on tv now, just search google with "sutra zdf theaterkanal". a german tv station, but theres no language in it, so available for everyone.. :-)
Apparently you didn't quite get what I was trying to say. Anyway, I don't like the "of course" bit, as if any other opinion would be ridiculous. But I don't really care if you call this dance or not, terminology always being a very tricky thing to deal with. This is just a wonderful video and I can't wait to see this choreography (hope you don't mind me using this term) in its entirety

Where is the flow in this choreography?
looks very "European" to me - I mean very boring.

Just saw it in Berlin - it's mindblowing and magical - there will be more three shows and I am going to see them all!
this video can only show a bit of course - see the whole show - it will make you happy!!!
Question: is this dance or not? Fuck, who cares!
Be open-minded :-)
World Premiere was on 27th of may 2008 at Sadler's Wells - London's Dance House :-)

You are out of dance spirit, seanmckeen ! There is no "classic" or "no classic" dance, there is only dance or not! Of course Sutra isn't a "dance".

"Dance" is much more than a simple management of body's-motion!
Sorry, "Sutra" is a very nice demonstration of martial-art's movements, not a "Dance".

You're obviously stuck in a classical way of thinking about dance. I think normative thinking doesn't do anyone any good
