i can only get 1:07.456 on Rfactor and i have done over 1200 laps....300 in the 2011 F1, 500 in the 1992 F1, and 400 in allot of other cars. Laguna Seca is the best.
That's true, Americans cannot fit in f1 cars, it's a fact ha ha!
Also formula 1 is too fast and the technology to great for yanks brains to work out and comprehend. This is also the reason they made NASCAR, they though, 'I know let's get a big yank car, and strip it out, then make it go round and round a track. We won't need to brake or turn right' you poor yanks...
@12988Jake Your stereotyping of americans all being fat nascar fans is pretty ignorant. Obviously you've never been here. America has the Grand Prix series in long beach. We have Formula D, American Le Mans. Nascar is mostly for people living in the rural areas. I know better than to stereotype all british people having crooked teeth, wearing burberry, and being pasty, alcoholic football hooligans.
@12988Jake congrats, while you were winning races with a jags and lotuses we broke the sound barrier, made the first nuclear submarine and went to moon instead.
Laguna seca is far too short for formula one by the looks of it, its always been a great track but it would need an extension, which in turn would ruin it's character.
come on Burnie, put back F1 to USA, like "anywhere" Laguna Seca, Road America, Indianapolis, Willow Springs!!! Four of them are so good and amazing tracks!!!
@aragon89 ermm F1 has US on the calendar for next year. They are building a track in Austin, TX right now as we speak. Have you been under a cave or watch F1 on Speed? which amounts to the same thing.
f1 in laguna never , it is too small for f1 and bumpy, but if this track be 5 miles it will be good for f1 , my opinion is that riverside i,raceway is best track ever, too bad for f1 that riverside no more exist.
@tubernery Sorry but that isn't true at all. I am a Californian and I even know there is no comparison. Monaco is a road track that is used as normal city roads all other times of the year and Laguna is a race track... No comparison....
@lilbro209 What I meant was that Laguna Seca is the one track in the US that's as cool as Monaco. After 11 years, I still remember each turn...especially the steep slope and hairpins.
@tubernery I can agree with that. Thiose 2 tracks are my very favorites in the world. I have to say though that thanks to iRacing that Spa and Road Atlanta are quickly moving up to Epic status alongside these 2..... If you like racing so much and want to take laps at the closest and best replicated tracks ever get a iRacing subscription.
@RAS001 I meant to say Epic status in my personal favorites list. I know Spa is one of the worlds greatest tracks already. I just meant it is quickly turning into one of my most favorites because of my sim racing on that track. Sorry I wasn't more specific.
They really should go to Laguna Seca. Instead of Circuit of America's (or how it's called). It's way better. The tarmac is under good service. And that cockscrew would be nice with all the 24 f1 cars.
The controversy of women driving NASCAR vs Formulas? seems like crap to me. Formulas are faster? no? plus seems like some formula cars should be racing NASCAR tracks. the formulas must break much sooner than nascars have to, if at all. why are formula tracks more curvy and turny than nascar, but women cant drive in them.. Thumbs up to Danica Patrick!! and the awesome shit she does
@73dnovak actually formula cars brake much later than Nascars because they're a lot lighter and have better brakes too. An F1 for example weighs no more than 600Kg (1400Lbs) whereas a Nascar if i'm not mistaken weighs more than double that.
The track needs to be redone, like a shit tone, If F1 came to California(as seen at Long Beach in 2007 for Hot laps) that would be something I'd pay good money for!
the seasons when nigel mansell went over plus the year or two before and after.. loved watching it then (even though im a brit)as all the tracks had diffences even the ovals....at least f1 is slowly looking at other ideas eg. night races.... would love it if they took a leaf out of wrc and build one sand/dirt track and one ice/snow track in scandinavian county that would rock. at the moment the f1 cars are dragster lite eg so fast that the course they have to run on safely is just boring!!
.......monte carlo spa and sometimes suzuka. f1 cars our just to expensive, powerfull and aero grip dependant..... hence the need for tracks with yards of runoffs no corkscrews type corners etc etc ..indy cars/champcars have the right idea in terms of cheaper cost and more overtaking(well on ovals anyways) but they should be a bit lighter with carbon brakes so be more nippee like an f1 car plus should have standing starts on all tracks..the early 90s indycars had the best of both worlds around..
both f-1 and champcars have big issuse that nark me off! f1 and europeans unfairly look down at oval racing... those races at indy would have been so much better on the speedway track instead of that infeild nonesense! the moment f1 had to leave the old nurburgring track the writing was on the wall that the cars were just 2 fast! since then the loss of g8 tracks such as imola, the old hockenheim and osterreichring in exchange for mr tikes tracks..... is such a loss....we our luckey to keep
You are all talking rubbish!! Brazil is only a 1.13 lap and one of the best tacks on the calendar. Is short fast has big stops and the 90 degree corners allow for overtaking. Great track! Bernie make it happen
Well, they were going to move the British GP to Donnington Park. That track's got a pretty short lap as well. The last time F1 ran there it was an 80 lap race. They were lapping around the 1:18 range, and that was in the wet. Had it been dry they expected to be in the 1:10's or thereabouts. And that was in '93. A current F1 car would be damn near one minute flat, I imagine.
Wish that that proposed track wasn't being constructed for the USGP. There is no better track in the USA than Laguna Seca, but 1:10 lap times would kill it probably. Such a shame because to me, it combines all the elements a track should have. Hopefully the new circuit in Austin, TX will be good as well.
@3NIGMAXRX It's called the "corkscrew". It's interesting because going into the turn you actually can't see anything below you... something you don't realize until you're laying on the ground in a formula car. At a driving school i went to there they actually threw a cone up in a tree outside the track and told us to aim for it!
i like laguna, but its not f1 material. 1 minute lap times... fukin go-kart track for f1. take a f1 driver that did a whole race on Bahrain and then stick him in laguna he will fall asleep behind the wheel.
@mattie701 I don't think a driver could ever fall asleep at Laguna... Have you tried the corkscrew section out? Thing is like having the bottom fall out of the car!
as much as i would love to see F1 here, a lap here for the cars is too short, especially with 24 cars on the grid now. what F1 management should really do is return to the Glen. it would suit them much better
@TheEgg185 It was an older Champ car I think, however the Panoz DP01 CART car beat this record the following year (2007), then CART merged with INDY and the Panoz DP01 is no longer in use by any racing league.
@SuperColossal33 I'm pretty confident an F1 car would still hold the unofficial record if it was driven by a competitive driver in a competitive chassis. A Toyota that was never remotely competitive driven by the never remotely competitive Ricardo Zonta, while fast by most standards, isn't exactly 'fast' in the world of Grand Prix racing. Imagine this circuit driven by Juan Pablo in the Williams BMW FW25 or Schumi in the F2004.
@SuperColossal33 That's definitely true. The disparity in cost between the two doesn't seem to justify the extra monies spent to many people. However, consider that a Champ Car is roughly 8-12 seconds slower around the same circuit as a Grand Prix car, as shown at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, which was the best comparison as it was the only circuit that both Champ Car and Formula One raced on. Stock cars, by comparison, on the same circuit were some 40 seconds slower.
This is the US's best race track they have. no need to build new ones, go for this one. OK its rather short and quali would be a killer, but its so fun to watch people drop down the corkscrew.
Another thing I've realised, by listening to the presenter and reading the comments, the USA could never have an f1 team. It wouldnt sound right. no offense, I mean someone called flying laps time attack laps. I mean come on get it right. Formula 1 is the top if the top in motorsport, gotta say it right
Laguna Seca is my favorite race track and I'd love to see F1 there, but it has to undergo some mayor upgrades first. The infrastructure around the track is really bad and could never handle the crowd an F1 race would bring.
But imagine a mclaren and a ferrari flying through the corkscrew... Sweet. :P
@andhag it's far too short for f1, and would have almost no overtaking opportunities.
i don't like the track, it has the corkscrew and the high-speed left after it which are good corners, but literally every single other corner is a flat right angle, even the hairpin.
If F1 had to race here, they need to heavily modify the track. Firstly, it's too short. It only has about 10 proper corners too. Secondly, it does not meet the FIA's saftey standards. The runoffs would need to be massively extended and turned into those huge open tarmac areas. And thirdly, it might have to be widened in most areas. And it might even have to lose the Corckscrew for F1 races. It would be butchered and lose all it's character to host an F1 event.
@marianopicco It would probably also help a ton if for one-lap Time Attacks they pushed the car to the limit of grip instead of just going through turns like they normally would...People could easily bring Time Attack times down even more.
The principal motive of the F1 doesn't race there is the CORSKTREW...Because the turn is too inclinate and danger !!! IT'S TRUE....I BERNIE ECLESTONE TALKED IT TO ME !!!!
WTF! Bring F1 to this track already!!!! Whats the name of that downhill left-right series of corners?? It's like running Eau Rouge backwards. Whoa, I just blew my mind. Eau Rouge backwards....
@tubeyouviewer1984 basically American formula 1....Used to be called CART back in the 90's, merged with Indy Racing League 2 years ago.
The car with the record is a Panoz DP01, it entered Champ car in 2007, won all 14 races, had the fastest lap on all 14 of those races, Indy bought Champ and Indy only allows the Dallara/Honda combo, so this car is currently not used anywhere in the world, a shame because it is so fast.
yeah its an interesting choice, dallara never submitted that design last year, they must have been cooperating with Indy for the new chassis...personally I was hoping for one of the Swift models, but the new one is OK. Anything but that crazy "Delta Wing" batmobile
should also notice that F1 cars are slightly faster, however champ cars operated on a $20million yearly budget while Formula 1 teams can spend $500 million a season.
@SuperColossal33 Nope, F1 has been capped to 40million now... yes they use to be able to spend 400mil, but that was the real car manufactures (ferrari/toyota), they could afford it and there was no cap, the smaller teams (like Jordan GP,and super aguri) when they raced had a budget of nearly 45mil, but that included the 15mil for the drivers.
Toyota, at the time of the video had 443million, the largest of anyone, also they could be quicker, but the rules stop it all (no V10, superchargers etc)
...and the TF106 car wasn't great either. Get a 2010 spec McLaren or Red Bull and it'd probably do a 1:02. Maybe on very low fuel it could do a sub 1 minute. Anyway the track looks good, can't see why Bernie doesn't use the facilities already there!
this the time done by a toyota f1 with an average f1 driver. imagine the lap time if done by a ferrari f1 or mclaren f1 with lewis hamilton onboard. it would be atleast 3 seconds faster.
Get F1 to Laguna Seca, that would be so good, F1 needs to be in America and there is a real drivers track there. Why does;nt one of those US billionares put some money to it and make it happen?
F1 engines are produced with extreme tight tolerances. In fact so tight that their pistons are stuck when they are cold. So you have to heat them up to ~90°C by pumping hot water and oil through their coolant system before you can start them.
F1 cant go around Lagunga with 17 other drivers around you... Laguna Was Designed for MotoGP and Champ Car. You would have 2 dead drivers in a F1 race
@Buddyisnumber1 Nonsense, Formula 1 is the safest class of automobile racing on the planet. FIA spec F1 crash structures are second to none. Yes a race here may be dangerous for a field full of formula 1 cars, but to claim that drivers would be killed is just plain stupid.
They made a choise between Laguna seca and Phoenix street ciruit in the late 80's, but the Phoenix-crap lasted only for few years. I think that if they'd chosen Laguna seca, F1 would still be here.
I think it would be nice to see both Indy and Laguna Seca in F1, Indy as USGP East and Laguna as USGP West...
@lapgellert he can see it, but an F1 event at laguna seca wouldn't be feasible unfortunately because of where its located, the short track length, non-compliance to FIA standards and old facilities.
I would never want the track to be modified for the FIA standards so hence, F1 not at laguna is probably a good thing.
@lapgellert it's a great track but not for F1, todays cars would lap it in less than 1 min 6 seconds and thas too short . the leaders would be lapping backmarkers 5-6 times in the race which would be ridiculous, also the corkscrew is a problem for an f1 car, look what toyota had to do to get it round without beaching itself, they raised the car way higher off the ground than normal . this affects downforce on flat corners and hence the cars will never reach full potential and true speed
@lapgellert Yea its a great track but theres more than just a layout of a track to take into consideration. Laguna seca is 2.238 miles it would be the second shortest track in formula 1, just ahead of Monaco. The facilities may not be up to par either and that is a big deal in formula 1. It's a long distance from major population the paddock is quite small compared to others and there was also a death in a cart race there. Gonzalo Rodriguez 1999. those things work against it.
I suppose you are just another stupid Italian... Americans are not some new people— we are the amalgamation of old Europe. See, many of your fellow countrymen left your wonderful land to find somewhere better. And they did. All the ancient peoples of Europe have moved and taken their history and genetics with them.
2800 years of history! Did you think Americans appeared out of thin air just the other day?
Yeah like you did a lot to contribute to that...and we DO have 2800 years of history here, Native Americans. And what did Italy do...oh yeah, fascist WWII + dictator douchebag - great history there, Italian Hairball.
i can only get 1:07.456 on Rfactor and i have done over 1200 laps....300 in the 2011 F1, 500 in the 1992 F1, and 400 in allot of other cars. Laguna Seca is the best.

Sweet. :P
andhag 1 year ago 43
@andhag it's far too short for f1, and would have almost no overtaking opportunities.
i don't like the track, it has the corkscrew and the high-speed left after it which are good corners, but literally every single other corner is a flat right angle, even the hairpin.
thesurgeon 11 months ago
@andhag I would beg to differ. It handles a MotoGP crowd just fine, and I honestly think that draws just as much people as an F1 race would.

@andhag I'm from Austin and couldn't be more excited about F1 coming to my hometown, but I agree. F1 should move to Laguna Seca for the US GP.

thestaggie 1 year ago
If F1 had to race here, they need to heavily modify the track. Firstly, it's too short. It only has about 10 proper corners too. Secondly, it does not meet the FIA's saftey standards. The runoffs would need to be massively extended and turned into those huge open tarmac areas. And thirdly, it might have to be widened in most areas. And it might even have to lose the Corckscrew for F1 races. It would be butchered and lose all it's character to host an F1 event.
thestaggie 1 year ago
And this is what a middle of the pack F1 could achieve in Laguna Seca.
If a Ferrari or McLaren tried it, it'd go to 1.04, maybe less... F1 is just ages ahead of everything else
marianopicco 1 year ago
@marianopicco It would probably also help a ton if for one-lap Time Attacks they pushed the car to the limit of grip instead of just going through turns like they normally would...People could easily bring Time Attack times down even more.
Darkman2023 1 year ago
@marianopicco Not to mention that was a middle of the pack car with the 2.4L V8... imagine if the V10's had been allowed to try it out

weird that they use the engines for 2-4 races these days then.....
in the old days they were delicate because they only lasted 1 race so they just trashed every bit of performance they could

there are multiple reasons that would make it impossible for F1 to run at laguna seca. the track would need many additions.
SuperColossal33 1 year ago
@SuperColossal33 what are they exactly though?
tubeyouviewer1984 1 year ago
@tubeyouviewer1984 basically American formula 1....Used to be called CART back in the 90's, merged with Indy Racing League 2 years ago.
The car with the record is a Panoz DP01, it entered Champ car in 2007, won all 14 races, had the fastest lap on all 14 of those races, Indy bought Champ and Indy only allows the Dallara/Honda combo, so this car is currently not used anywhere in the world, a shame because it is so fast.
SuperColossal33 1 year ago
@SuperColossal33 Yeah that Panoz DP01 was a beautiful car. Still looked like the classic champ cars in the early '90's.
I am not surprised IRL kept their relationship with Dallara for the new 2012 car.
Lola's were such nice cars.
tubeyouviewer1984 1 year ago
@tubeyouviewer1984
yeah its an interesting choice, dallara never submitted that design last year, they must have been cooperating with Indy for the new chassis...personally I was hoping for one of the Swift models, but the new one is OK. Anything but that crazy "Delta Wing" batmobile
SuperColossal33 1 year ago
@tubeyouviewer1984
should also notice that F1 cars are slightly faster, however champ cars operated on a $20million yearly budget while Formula 1 teams can spend $500 million a season.

Yeah F1 would be great at both Laguna Seca and Road America. Sadly F1 is going to get another boring Tilke circuit in the US!
alphabetaxenonzzzcat 1 year ago
...and the TF106 car wasn't great either. Get a 2010 spec McLaren or Red Bull and it'd probably do a 1:02. Maybe on very low fuel it could do a sub 1 minute. Anyway the track looks good, can't see why Bernie doesn't use the facilities already there!

F1 engines are produced with extreme tight tolerances. In fact so tight that their pistons are stuck when they are cold. So you have to heat them up to ~90°C by pumping hot water and oil through their coolant system before you can start them.
7inrain 1 year ago
F1 cant go around Lagunga with 17 other drivers around you... Laguna Was Designed for MotoGP and Champ Car. You would have 2 dead drivers in a F1 race
Buddyisnumber1 2 years ago
@Buddyisnumber1 Nonsense, Formula 1 is the safest class of automobile racing on the planet. FIA spec F1 crash structures are second to none. Yes a race here may be dangerous for a field full of formula 1 cars, but to claim that drivers would be killed is just plain stupid.

They made a choise between Laguna seca and Phoenix street ciruit in the late 80's, but the Phoenix-crap lasted only for few years. I think that if they'd chosen Laguna seca, F1 would still be here.

Great track. F1 in Laguna Seca. The track is so good, but Bernie can t see it
lapgellert 2 years ago 45
@lapgellert he can see it, but an F1 event at laguna seca wouldn't be feasible unfortunately because of where its located, the short track length, non-compliance to FIA standards and old facilities.
I would never want the track to be modified for the FIA standards so hence, F1 not at laguna is probably a good thing.

dont forget the road america..
spooky78 1 year ago
@lapgellert it's a great track but not for F1, todays cars would lap it in less than 1 min 6 seconds and thas too short . the leaders would be lapping backmarkers 5-6 times in the race which would be ridiculous, also the corkscrew is a problem for an f1 car, look what toyota had to do to get it round without beaching itself, they raised the car way higher off the ground than normal . this affects downforce on flat corners and hence the cars will never reach full potential and true speed
rneoman 1 year ago
@lapgellert Yea its a great track but theres more than just a layout of a track to take into consideration. Laguna seca is 2.238 miles it would be the second shortest track in formula 1, just ahead of Monaco. The facilities may not be up to par either and that is a big deal in formula 1. It's a long distance from major population the paddock is quite small compared to others and there was also a death in a cart race there. Gonzalo Rodriguez 1999. those things work against it.
