@fjl05 I'm not sure about that. I really doubt anything would be damaged. If it were to, i don't think it would be too bad either. It'll likely still work.
@bigfoot623 I don't want to open it in the case that it does die and I have to send it to Nintendo for repairs. Opening it would void any kind of warranty or even perhaps Nintendo willing to fix it.
I've already spend lots of money on downloadable content and would hate having to re-buy everything if forced to buy a new Wii.
@fjl05 Totally understandable; if you can deal with it and don't think of the sound much then keep it as it is. Opening the console only voids the warranty but they will still fix it. Also you wouldn't have to "rebuy" anything per say, just download them again, right? All the purchases are already linked to your account. All the valuable save data would be lost though :O
@bigfoot623 "Opening the console only voids the warranty but they will still fix it"
You sure about that? My warranty expired ages ago. This was a launch day system.
My bro, who's Wii died, took it in to Nintendo, they replaced the system and changed the registration info so that all downloadable content is transferred to the new Wii allowing him to re-download everything. But I wonder if the Wii has been opened, they will think it's been tampered with & void transferring anything to a new Wii.
@fjl05 To be honest, I'm not 100% sure about the transferring part. You definitely bring an interesting take but I don't see why they wouldn't do that since we're *paying* for it to be fixed you know?
@bigfoot623 Apparently the solution was that I needed to apply a bit of pressure to opposite corners on top of the disc drive. Screwing them in all of the way didn't work; I had to press them down. Maybe there's something I need to put inside the Wii's shell to press those corners down...would that metal plate inbetween be much of an issue, do you think?
@rthomas2335 sorry but which screws are you talking about here? The ones I have highlighted beside the green rectangle? Those are the ones you need to untighten but from the looks of it you have some kind of other problem?
For everyone wondering what I did, I just un-tightened the 2 screws left and right of the green rectangle. You just have to find a specific amount of un-tightening to make the noise completely stop. I personally just un-tightened it just a small bit. I'll shortly upload a picture dictating the screws.
I don't know what to do anymore. It must have been pretty tight. I think you'll just have to send it in to Nintendo. They'll probably have to pry them out or so. Good luck with that.
Don't you mean tri-wing? Anyways, I know what you mean, I first tried a flat-head screw driver first and it didn't go so well. I ended up messing up a tri-wing and made it a triangle lol. It wasn't a significant screw (under the black gamecube port cover) so I just tossed it. I then just bought the tri-wing and phillips at eBay and it was smooth sailing thereafter.
Hi, thanks for replying. I think i know what you mean and have tried but my wii screws on the plate (the 2 little phillips screws) are way too tight and now cause i've tried so much i have worn away the x gripper in the middle of the screw so now i've no idea what to do.. Get the whole disk drive replace me thinks??
Open your wii system granted you have a tri-wing and a phillips screwdriver. The problem is not caused by the metal plate or the metal wings. It is rather these screws that you have to loosen slightly that the metal wing plate is attached to. It's hard to explain, really.

@smokeytar1106 I found the tri wing screwdriver at nintendoscrewdriver(dot)com

If I where to not do the fix, would something get damaged in the long run or it'll just continue to be noisy from here on?

Question...those two screws for me are especially difficult to loosen, and I'm afraid I'll strip them. Any tips?
rthomas2335 1 year ago
@rthomas2335 Hmmm.. it's making that sound because it's screwed in way too tightly. I'm not sure, just try your best to un-tighten them.
