Everquest... What is it. Simply put, an amazing experience.
You have such a feeling of belonging. I have not played in 2 years, but I played the 10 previous. I still think about returning once in a while. So hard to let go.

Despite my bitching though, this video gave me a lump in my throat, I did have good times. And the first song was beautiful, the second song however, sucks fucking shit.
To anyone from Tunare who reads this. Most of you were fucking idiots. The guys were shameless nerdy fatso flirts, the chicks were wishy washy saps, who took every advantage of these idiot guys to get free gear and get carried through the game.
To Justice League of Norrath. Haha fucking assholes, I used your guild like a condom to get VT keyed, AFTER you kicked me out lol. I fucking USED you. JLN is about the worst group of people to exist on this planet. You're all a fucking virus.
I miss much about this game. But I'd like to say what I really DON'T miss.
The excessive flirting in fucking PoK. The excessive flirting EVERYWHERE.
The spamming of fucking /hug and /kiss emote even during important boss fights between Lethy, (you know who you are cuntbag) and your fake ass online boyfriend. The general ass kissing carebear shit during bowtea raids. Once again you know who you are. I played on Tunare and it was the most carebear bullshit ever. That I will NOT miss.
Man I still remember when I played last. I took my Wood Elf Ranger to the Plane of Growth and camped at the feet of Tunare. I thought that my Ranger should be regulated to Guard duty to the deity she had fought so long to honor. Never logged back on after thet. I tried other MMORPG's but they were no where near as engaging as EQ.
In my opinion, Everquest had a quality that no other MMO has been able to duplicate. You actually felt as if you were a part of Norrath and a larger world, in general, and not just another nameless face in the crowd.
I spent 8 years playing this game before moving onto other MMOs, every time I see this video I cry, it was such a powerful experience for me, I met so many good people here, it is really is sad the magic of the game faded for me when all my friends left and my long time guild started to disband and go their seprate ways.
Selling all on me at EC Tunnel! I miss the game, most of all the people I ran with for 7+years. I had friends from England and all across the US that stayed with me or I went on vacation and stayed with them, I miss those days. I just got the free reactivation for both the accounts I had logged in and forgot how to play and you can't solo lol.

I never was addicted to anything in my life until EQ. My best friend's brother introduced me to UO and played it wishing it was more first person style. A few months go by he calls me up stairs to check out the new one hes playing. Hes running around on his bard in Western Karana. I walked out the door to buy it and proceeded to waste the next several years of my life. It is a mixed reaction when I look back. Great memories but wasted the best years of my life.

I had a tear welling up in my eye watching this. It certainly brought back the best memories I ever had from an mmorpg. Thank you for the nostalgia rush. Still missing it now nearly 6 years after leaving. It had that certain quality about it that you couldn't quite put your finger on, but you'll be looking for it for the rest of your life.
This is definitely the single greatest EQ 1 video I've ever seen. Spectacular music and images, especially the first couple minutes. Eq1 was the grandfather game, the greatest multiplayer game created. And if not that, the first huge success. Crazy to think thousands still play it today.
I come back to this video ever so often and just get all nostalgic. I still have a folder of screenshots of my toons and hanging out with guildies. I kind of wonder where they are now. I love WoW and think there are great things about it that EQ didn't have, but EQ is what got me into MMORPGs and it will always mean a lot to me. Sometimes I wish I could go back.
EQ was more then just a game. It was what Dungeons and Dragons and other fantasy nerds were waiting for. It was a place where like minded adventurers could escape reality and truly immerse themselves in something completely different. Where those "nerd types"(and sometimes not) could all come together and enjoy each other without the stresses of the real world.
EQ created a ripple in the gaming community that will last forever.
The first time you stepped into lower guk or into Nagafen's Lair or the plane of fear. It would scare the pants off you, something i have never experienced in a game since. But you got through it thanks to a damn good bunch of people who were ready to help you even if it meant hours of lost gameplay and repeated deaths.
So heres to everyone that made the game into what it was!
I agree. I've played WoW for a couple years. The graphics are nice, but the gameplay is lacking. It's far too easy, I'm sad to say. I think most people who play WoW that have never experenced EQ would find EQ extremely difficult.
Yup. WoW has no risk involved. If your character dies in WoW its nothing more than a minor inconvenience. In EQ if you die it could set you back a few days of game play. Anyone who had to run from the ice tunnel to KC in the Dreadlands knows the adrenaline rush of hoping your Invis/Lev/Sow doesn't drop at the wrong moment!! And tradeskills - in EQ there was always a risk of failure. In WoW, you NEVER fail.
It was that chance of failure that added a small degree of realism to EQ. How about running through EJ (if I remember right that's the one with a huge cliff in it). I used to run that without lev, just because I knew how to get down the cliff without dying. :P
WEll, I dont know about EQ ever "willing" sacrificing graphics lol :) being the first 3d mmo would kinda have a low-bar to shoot for, at first; though over time it slowly got better, with a large boost around the Shadows of Luclin point iir~
But in a way the graphics added to its charm - or maybe thats jsut nostalgia talking, either way heh
Wow, I cant help but to come back and watch this video from time to time and remember the experience that was EQ. Playing other MMORGs now just misses that social interaction that EQ brought to the table. May she continue to always thrive even in the face of other game, no game comes close to the challenge in my mind.
I will always remember when I had a wood elf ranger and I went to the place where Tunare lives and accidentally killed a unicorn or something and was terrified that I had ruined my faction haha.
to poopalist: 2004? your off by quite a bit, EQ started development in the mid 90's and was released in early 1999; it may look bad by todays standards; but 10 years ago, there were few games this good and NONE of them were MMORPG's, the only MMO's to surpass EQ came out years later (2002 and up)
Wow, what a nostalgic kick to the face... I started playing EQ1 during the summer of '99 through 2002. I was a half-elf ranger from Qeynos and I remember my first venture into blackburrow, the 2 npc's that watched over the animals in qeynos hills, and the very first time I saw a giant in the karanas. I remember everything from losing my corpse in qeynos sewers, to traveling from qeynos to freeport (nothing will ever be as heartstopping as that journey).I hold fond memories of my times in Norrath
Yeah I started playing EQ back when it first came out. The people that play this game are top notch, my old guild we used to have guild diners once every 3 months. It was great. Now for a really cool story, when i was very young i lost track of my brother, in 2006 I found him and come to find out we grouped together alot on eci, and never knew that we where brothers until I tracked him down. It was a very small world, considering how populated the servers where.
Raid wipes, Trains to zone, corpse runs, faction building, skill training, deleveling death right after a new level combined could not stop us back in the day. That solid gaming community plus a world filled to the brim with good times kept us enthralled. Great job EQ, and to all those that were a part of it, you had real grit and determination! It was fun playing with you.
hey guys google eqemu vztz pvp server. all you need is titanium package to play for free! pvp server currently with kunark & velious released. population a little low atm but is growing. need some of you oldschool pvpers to come back and get this community going
There will never be anything to equal the magic of EQ1, back in the days of East Commons trade spamming, pissing off monks by splitting copper, and creating epic trains in blackburrow, or even better, in Karnor's & running out the wrong side. Those days will always be missed.
This made my heart sad. Pictures of classic older zones I know like the back of my hand, not the updated ones I never got to see much of. I played from June of 1999 to October of 2007. I miss the classic days of EQ, considerably. I started in Freeport with nothing but a rusty short sword, 5 milk and 5 bisquits, and ended up in different Planes, killing the gods and dragons with some great people. Thank you for bringing those memories back.
Ahh that brings back so many memories, thankyou! Also, great choice of music and screenshots on the first half, second half was good too but the first really got me.
God I miss you, my ranger brethren....why do companies get in the way of experiences....EQ had the magic, the trials, the everything. SOE, be ashamed.....
are you fucking kidding me? say what you will about eq's graphics its population...but WoW is the easiest game out there..It was decided by an independent study from a MAJOR reviewing company EQ was decided the hardest game!
I started playing EQ at the tail end of 2000, just as Velious was being released. I played until late 2004, shortly after Omens . The first few years were a blast - it was actually fun to get so in depth with the game. After Planes of Power, it became too much of a chore to play, and I hated the fact that this gameplay was making me hate the game I loved. Born of West Freeport, heading to East Commonlands and seeing North Ro for the first time with that music - nothing will be the same...
when i was in high school and i needed a new copy of EQ (because of computer issues), my guild master at that time DROVE FROM ARIZONA to give me a copy.
EQ players are the best. nothing will ever compare. the community was so mature, and now MMOers are too young to build mature communities...
@McSkullen 4 years is too much leeway. I'd say the first 2 and a half years. The game went significantly downhill when Shadows of Luclin came out. And, although I loved the design elements of Kunark and Velious, the game was probably at its absolute best the first year. It was more about just taking part of a living, breathing World back then. A lot of people roleplayed and there wasn't as much twinking of low level characters. It became more about grinding when the expansions came out.
No we don't bro. Nothing can ever live up to the experience you have with your first MMO. Many people spend tons of hours, years, trying to recreate those feelings, but it just can't be done.
I too played on Solusek Ro as well. Talen the Wanderer Nomad of Norrath! There has certainly no game since that has drawn me in so powerfully, believe me, i have tried just about every game since. It will always hold a special place in my memories, that time will be missed as will the friends I made and lost over time.
As other player of the first "EQ1" hour can probably tell you this song just goes straight to the heart!
Every time i watch this it almost pulls me right back to go play again. But EQ1's glory days are gone.
After "Planes of Power" it didn't really felt like Good Old Norrath anymore for me...
To everyone who still plays it i salute you all, may Tunare guide your arrows and maybe we'll see eachother again when our roads of destiny cross in the future!
I played a little WoW and in the beginning days i could pick out former EQ1 players after not even a minute of talking to them... I started to place em into the Diablo and EQ groups :) cause people who only played Diablo and jumped on the blizzard MMORPG bandwagon where always looking out for themselves and EQ1 people thought more about their fellow players! ***True Story***
the EQ community actually connects and RPs like they should while supposed wow "RPers" dont have that human feeling when you quest with them they are just all about grinding and leveling....in EQ its is about lvling but its also about having fun
EQ players actually know how to RP and they are cool enough that they can actually get into it....
We are definitely more dedicated than most WoW players
True, so very True!!! The fact was also in the old days of EQ the game was Hard you had to make friends in order to make it easier for yourself and others!!! WoW is so easy you can solo to 80 faster alone then with groups so why would you bother to socialize... and thats sad!
EverQuest forever! I miss those times. Graphics might be better now, but the game as a whole has lost most of its charm. Still the best MMORPG out there.
quit everquest few days ago..this video brings back a lot of memories to many people...goodbyw norrath this is my sundown. i still remember hunting in Rathe mounts...anyway....goodluck on ur long journey to all that will keep live in that amazing, beuatifull and full of memories world that called Norrath
Mirage was an all Japanese guild. I think they disbanded, with some of them merging with another Japanese guild on EM. Others went to EQ2 and some WoW.
Respect to Mirage Guild! Personally best Asian raiding guild of EQ of all time. We've lost a lot of member (Sunrise guild) from Bertox transfering their chars just to get into Mirage guild. :)
I miss the quality raids in EQ that you don't get anymore in a lot of MMORPG. With a handful of exceptions in WoW.
I miss EQ. I still remember the run I mad at level 10 from Qeynos to Freeport. Ahh the lions and KITH! It all changed when Luclin came out. Sigh, my fav zone still IS Lake Of Ill Omen. I haven't played in a couple years.. wondering if I'll ever come back.
I have played : EQ1, EQ2, DAOC, WoW, Vanguard, GuildWars, and LOTRO...and nothing compares to EQ1, no other game could make me feel like EQ1 did, I guess its just that EQ1 made you feel like something real, while other games just make you feel like its a video game.
OMFG dude iknow what your saying but seriously stop bitching about the old EQ I have played it for years andistill play.YES it was great back then and YES! it has changed but come on so has the world so has your lifes(hopefully) we all wish we could go back and do stuff. But if you dont take the time to appreciate whats happening nowwhats fun and enjoyable what good things can come from EQ and life you'll spend the rest of your days regretting what has become of u and never will have trully lived
That's partly a good statement and partly a bad one, dduble. The bad is that you're inferring I shouldn't want to be able to play a game the same quality as early EQ. Always clinging to past because you fear change is not good, but wanting a product that meets your standards is a different matter. The fact is that early EQ was an immersive online RPG experience for me and other games have simply failed to achieve the same thing. WoW is like fast food, for example. Should I not want REAL food?
I agree, also does anyone know the name/artist of the introduction song? Not the vanessa mae or jimmy eat world songs, but the violin and piano song that played the intro before you clicked on play?
FUCK! Oh my god you sound likea middle aged women.Who wishes she could gobacktoher "glory" days the only difference is that you can go back Norrath the world is what you make of it and online too log your old chars in and playEQ is still around and is still great and theres many corners of norrath that you havnt seen that still need to be explored please please please consider re-logging on and startin new adventuresSorry to be a hardass but its true and I love EQ and wanna see old and new faces
I'll never forget all the time I had in this game...all the friends I made - it was the first game I played on-line...nothing that I've played after can come close to EQ...not the great times, the corpse & bind camping, the wild corpse runs (lol) the trains, the epic raids, the absolutely great people who I was fortunate to have met...3yrs.later and I still long for those times
Holy crap. Great Frakkin Video. I still very much miss the days of classic eq up until pop. Quit shortly after that, but still think back on it often. Again, great video.
Truly awesome video. Really well done. Man, I have played this game for about five years now, but I still think about it. This video really brought back some great memories.
I have played EQ, EQ2, WoW, Guildwars, Anarchy Online, Vanguard and AoC. I liked most of these games, but nothing compares til EQ. EQ was just more than a game...

EQ created a ripple in the gaming community that will last forever.
refuckulate420 2 years ago 3
I hear you - it will sound cheesy - but EQ was alot like a second childhood, something thorougly engrossing, unique, and every moment irreplacable.
Thats why its so bittersweet to recall it, its something us EQ vets wish we could recapture - experience anew with the same sensations.

They sacrificed graphics for game play. So WoW has better graphics. The game is also easy enough to play itself. EverQuest would challenge you.

Dreathen/Drackner Gnomethrower of Fennin Ro
I agree. I've played WoW for a couple years. The graphics are nice, but the gameplay is lacking. It's far too easy, I'm sad to say. I think most people who play WoW that have never experenced EQ would find EQ extremely difficult.
lulzofepicproportion 2 years ago
In WoW, you NEVER fail.
danyalyusuf 2 years ago
It was that chance of failure that added a small degree of realism to EQ. How about running through EJ (if I remember right that's the one with a huge cliff in it). I used to run that without lev, just because I knew how to get down the cliff without dying. :P
lulzofepicproportion 1 year ago
@danyalyusuf It's kind of like the special olympics.
StapleNinja0965 1 year ago
WEll, I dont know about EQ ever "willing" sacrificing graphics lol :) being the first 3d mmo would kinda have a low-bar to shoot for, at first; though over time it slowly got better, with a large boost around the Shadows of Luclin point iir~
But in a way the graphics added to its charm - or maybe thats jsut nostalgia talking, either way heh

to poopalist: 2004? your off by quite a bit, EQ started development in the mid 90's and was released in early 1999; it may look bad by todays standards; but 10 years ago, there were few games this good and NONE of them were MMORPG's, the only MMO's to surpass EQ came out years later (2002 and up)

I remember everything from losing my corpse in qeynos sewers, to traveling from qeynos to freeport (nothing will ever be as heartstopping as that journey).I hold fond memories of my times in Norrath
dnasca85 2 years ago 2

WoW was boring in my opinion. You just grind and level up. There's no sense of comradery.
EQ made you feel like you were actually a part of something. You actually felt like you were a part of a larger world, and not just another person.
Trance1972 2 years ago
I started playing EQ at the tail end of 2000, just as Velious was being released. I played until late 2004, shortly after Omens . The first few years were a blast - it was actually fun to get so in depth with the game. After Planes of Power, it became too much of a chore to play, and I hated the fact that this gameplay was making me hate the game I loved. Born of West Freeport, heading to East Commonlands and seeing North Ro for the first time with that music - nothing will be the same...

McSkullen 2 years ago
@McSkullen 4 years is too much leeway. I'd say the first 2 and a half years. The game went significantly downhill when Shadows of Luclin came out. And, although I loved the design elements of Kunark and Velious, the game was probably at its absolute best the first year. It was more about just taking part of a living, breathing World back then. A lot of people roleplayed and there wasn't as much twinking of low level characters. It became more about grinding when the expansions came out.

JieBie2100 2 years ago 2
I agree. Too many expansions killed it. But I do have to say that no other MMO even comes close to comparing with Everquest.
Wow and LOTRO held my interest for about a week. They seemed to lack the character of Everquest.
The Everquest Community was something that no other MMO has. It's what made it so special and what made me keep coming back.
Trance1972 2 years ago 5
I played a little WoW and in the beginning days i could pick out former EQ1 players after not even a minute of talking to them... I started to place em into the Diablo and EQ groups :) cause people who only played Diablo and jumped on the blizzard MMORPG bandwagon where always looking out for themselves and EQ1 people thought more about their fellow players! ***True Story***
JieBie2100 2 years ago 5
the EQ community actually connects and RPs like they should while supposed wow "RPers" dont have that human feeling when you quest with them they are just all about grinding and leveling....in EQ its is about lvling but its also about having fun
EQ players actually know how to RP and they are cool enough that they can actually get into it....
We are definitely more dedicated than most WoW players

True, so very True!!! The fact was also in the old days of EQ the game was Hard you had to make friends in order to make it easier for yourself and others!!! WoW is so easy you can solo to 80 faster alone then with groups so why would you bother to socialize... and thats sad!

dduble07 3 years ago
That's partly a good statement and partly a bad one, dduble. The bad is that you're inferring I shouldn't want to be able to play a game the same quality as early EQ. Always clinging to past because you fear change is not good, but wanting a product that meets your standards is a different matter. The fact is that early EQ was an immersive online RPG experience for me and other games have simply failed to achieve the same thing. WoW is like fast food, for example. Should I not want REAL food?
