Can someone expain this to me? I saw the little sub-thingy that said "Where Wi-fi is available" and i wanna know if the google chrome notebook connection is only available where wi-fi is. Or is it available anywhere. As in ANYWHERE. Like in space or something? PLZ explain.
@Austin101123 Because that is what your carrier wants you to thing you are using. If your carier told you that they now had faster 3G you would ignore it, but if they tell you they have 4G it gets your attention.
Wow he just insulted about a billion people with a life. I like the web but I don't have to have it on me every single second of my life! Plus if i were flying in the air i wouldne need a connection, i just fly everywhere!
Okay... Dislike if you disagree... but this notebook thing is STUPID. So I'm gonna go spend 600 bucks on a computer that ONLY surfs the web when I can get one with a better processor and wifi and play games that require download like SC2?
how about 1g - 4g and optional satilite because before you know it 5g will be out....better processor, more ram, AND some type of bare bones "system" for simple things......maybe an instant synching SSD would be a good idea, somewhere around 150gb so if you are "not connected" you can still make some frequent web pages available offline as if they were last time you were connected along with your apps.
so, if both mobile phones and chromebooks are going to use 3G, which is overcrowded already. The entire 3G network is going to be sluggish as hell. So google's claim for being ultra-fast is to be considered invalid.
i live in india and the internet sucks here;its slow,ISPs are greedy and poor bandwidth compared to most other countries.....and not to mention ridiculously expensive and stupid
You say '1990s' as if it was A LONG time ago. lol. Stop making me feel old. (Because I'm not). Haha! But true that OS were made before proper internet.
I think I'll wait for a Chrome netbook with 4G. Any notebook light enough to carry around comfortably is way too expensive, especially for something that basically just browses the web and writes emails.
I have one, 3G is fast enough (honestly, fast enough for youtube and web apps), you get 100 MB free a month through verizon and can also pay as you go without any contract (but there's a GSM radio and if you use developer mode you can use your AT&T account) there's 16 GB storage SSD, a USB port (of course) and a SD card slot.
As much as I'd like to agree, 4G hasn't become that prevalent yet, at least here in the US. Today's 4G networks are too limited in the customers that they serve and the technology is still too immature at this stage. Pretty much all carriers offer 3G so that's the only option for now. I'd give it a good 2-3 years before we actually start seeing 4G devices dominating the market space.
This would be absolutely great for me!! I mean i'm on the internet all the time! so i can't wait... hope i get one!!! and it does come with 3g as well for 2 years via 100mb/month from verizon if i'm correct?
This is great, but they better make sure offline caching is available for most productivity apps. I don't want to be in a meeting and need to give a presentation but the wifi is private (secured) and I'm too deep in the building to get access to the 3G network (shielding). Could be a bad situation to be in if you have only a Chrome notebook (with no offline caching).
I'd be slightly more impressed if it offered 4G, as 3G is just way too slow for most web apps. But I can see this thing catching on, since this is a new way of approaching a notebook, time will tell and it can only improve over time. There's no mention of storage however, is this a media consumption only device? With no drive, I'm hoping there's at least an SD slot and built in hard drive of SOME decent size.
@Argentium009 There is an SD slot and a built-in hard drive. You can download things onto your hard-drive so you can re-upload them later, but you can't directly access most things you put on your hard-drive.
@Argentium009 There's an SD card slot (though its not really accessible easily on most web apps) and it has 16 gigs of SSD used for some local downloads.
@foxh8er I was hoping to get one of the freebies when they had that promotion going but I suppose that's over now. I may get one sometime next year. I just wish it was 4G, the speed would be very much a selling point.
@Argentium009 Per month, free (paid for by Google, but requires your credit card) And BTW, you can't exactly torrent or heavy download on the CR48. ;)
@foxh8er Hehehe, no, I imagine not but mostly my usage is in the form of watching high definition streaming films through Netflix and other legal sources. :) Plus my phone service is through Vonage and I spend a lot of time in video chat or well, here. :) All that heavy bandwidth stuff.
@Argentium009 Chrome os is meant to live on the web, this is radically different than windows or mac. Some storage will be offered, I can see why because i use photoshop and I need to save pictures on my hard drive. The netbooks have 16gb ssd. Their will never be a hard drive because its pointless since this is meant to be the web. I use youtube for videos, i use Qriocity Music unlimited for streaming music.
@Argentium009 Well technically HSPA+ is just the HSDPA network that's been deployed by T-Mobile and AT&T a few years ago. LTE from MetroPCS and Verizon aren't 4G. WiMax is really supposed to be an alternative to WiFi, and from that point, it is kinda like 4G but it really isn't. In the rest of the world, HSDPA, LTE, and WiMax are all considered 3.5G
@Argentium009 As it's done completely through the web i don't think they'd have any storage space. Annoyingly they will CONTROL everything you do on your pc. Downloading torrents and other things may become impossible with this device. Long live pc :)
@Argentium009 don't worry it comes with 16 GB SSD Thing is, i can pay 400 more dollars a get a Macbook Air for $1199.With 128 GB SSD instead of 16, 4GB Ram, 1.6 Ghz i5 Dual Core instead of a Intel Atom (one Core) and Intel HD Graphics 3000 which are a lot faster and Mac OS X Lion loaded! Way better
@jacobbubble2 It comes with 24 months of free service. I don't know how much it costs beyond that but by then I imagine most people would be ready to upgrade to the next machine.
people who live on the web don't have lives.
