@matthewm93637 The Netduino that is running the show. It was for testing and development purposes only and has since been removed and replaced with an internal Netduino Mini.
@eadragon1108 Does no one read the descriptions on videos? That is temporary for development. It has since been replaced with an internal Netduino Mini....and we added a 3-axis accelerometer for more interactivity. New video forthcoming.
@vwellthen We had some pictures / video of the new disc sitting on the server, and encounterd a disk crash. It looks exactly like this, except missing the middle part so it looks like a factory toy again. It was difficult to get together so I don't think we want to open it again but we might be able to shoot a quick vid of the netduino mini version.
Very cool, just one question though, after cutting the triangle pieces off the edge ring that hold it internally, how well does it then hold in place?
@thundergod79, wow quick reply, thanks. The 6 LEDs they put inside to light up the edge ring is a very poor effort on their part, I'm intending to put 60 3mm LEDs inside to light up the edge, not all individually addressable though but split into repeating sets of 5 so I can make the whole edge glow or spin in sets of 3 like the film version, and those triangles are a bit in the way for such a mod.
@licensetodrive Agreed, the original 6 LED's placed by the manufacturer was a rather weak effort. We went with 30 to make addressing the LED's a bit more logical in code. Theoretically, the MAX7219 can address 64, but finding good logical divisions to make the code easily understandable was tough.
@HarfordHackerspace You guys got any pictures of your charging system? I'm specifically looking for how you did the charging pins. I have everything else working, but I can't get the connection solid enough to make charging possible.
I have an appreciation for why you chose to start with mounting the netduino in the center. The difficulty to pack all that stuff into the disc is extremely high. I'm close, but realized that 1) I built my LED ring for the wrong side, and it just takes too much room mounted on the side it's on. and 2) I need smaller gauge wire for the LEDs. Already wired up the netduino mini and max7219, I just need to redo the main LED ring to size it down a bit.
so, when you added the LED's, did you cut away parts of the blue rubber to fit the LED's into it? it seems no matter how i arrange the LEDs inside of mine it never shines through as well as the tiny ones that are layed into the plastic.
@TheWillRogers Yes, we cut away all of the internal blue rubbery material, leaving only the raised ring that holds the material sandwiched between the black plastic halves. Check the coding4fun page for some more in-depth photos of the build.

Are you considering doing contained builds of this for hire? I'm interested in having someone do mine. I'm not able to do it myself. Please message me.
Ok got a question. I have one of these discs and I would like to either mod it myself or find someone who can. I tried reading all the info on your site on how to do it but I have no idea how to read the wiring diagrams and I dont know anything about coding. So my question is would you be willing to do this to mine but with the Netdruino Mini? And if so how much would you charge? I love what you did and would love to show this off at car shows and clubs and direct them to you if you can do mine?
@rob92376 lol...techincally yes, but not in the same way. The Netduino (that's the device in the center of the disc) has some memory to store programming code for the disc's operation.
@illusive224 Actually, it does. Just not in most of the animations shown in the video. And it pulses when the device is in the charging cradle. We may make more use of it in future animations.

@HarfordHackerspace Could this be accomplished with the standard non-.Net Arduino?
ChrisLee007 11 months ago
@ChrisLee007 Sure, but it would require you to port the Netduino code to Arduino code.

@licensetodrive so long as you get it in the groove when securing the screws, it holds it extremely well.

Nice mod, but you suppose you guys could upload a more clear diagram for the LEDs/Driver/Netdruino? The one up on the how-to is unreadable.
and LuigiMario98982: Doubt it, the original toy was meant to be display as a collector's item, thus the stand that it comes with.
