@AugustusLarch it did, even though five out of six avengers were lost at midway, they were able to outpreform their predicessor, the devestator. however, navy pilots hated the sb2c the fondly said that the letters meant "son of a B****, Second Class.
They used horrible formation tactics for torpedo strikes that was the real reason for losses. They flew too close from the same direction. The British attacked simultaneously from all sides and everbody turned the same at the end of the run to avoid collisions. The whole obsolete airframe thing was propanganda. The Swordfish was slower and older than the devestator but was very effective because of superior tactics. After the Midway debacle torpedo missions declined for USN.
@AugustusLarch true, but the avenger was still used for torpedo missions and low level bombing. the Helldiver was meant to be a divebomber. several helldiver flaws included the wings being unable to lockdown, the tailhooks ripping off, the tail ripping off, and the engine dying. most pilots stayed with the trusted dauntless dive bomber
I have seen several photos of Helldivers and Avengers flying the same mission with bombs visable on the Avengers. The Navy probably wish they just ordered the Avenger. That machine probably could dive almost as well. Douglas got too busy building other types to continue with the dauntless. It was a better aircraft than the Curtiss model. The Corsair ended up outperforming all others in the bombing role anyway.
@AugustusLarch The navy sold Corsairs to the british because they were unable to figure out how to land the plane on a carrier. The british learned that a turn was 100% necessary to preform until just before getting to the flight deck.
I knew about this. I wonder how the world would be today without Rooselvelt and his carefully enginnered war. Remember FDR was assistant secrtary of the Navy under Wilson. He kept around the obsolete wrecks of battleships attacked at Pearl Harbor. How convienant.
@AugustusLarch Yes Very convenient, I can also proudly say that my state was represented at Pearl Harbor with one of the most renound Battleships of WWII, the USS Tennessee
The Tennesee wasn't hit bad either. It was old, launched in 1919, it had the top speed of 21 knots. Protected by the West Virgina on 7 Dec 1941 she didn't get any torpedos and left Pearl under it's own power four days later. Her sister ship California went to the bottom of the harbor. All of the these old ships should have been scrapped years ago. They were kept around specificlly to get attacked by the Japneese.
@AugustusLarch If im right, the Tennessee was hit by two bombs, both dud, and was damaged mainly by the flames from the Arizona. Of all of the Battleships at Pearl Harbor on that day, all but two went on to fight the japs, the Arizona and the Oklahoma, the Target ship Utah was also a total loss and is still in the harbor. One of Tennessee's innovations was an increased angle of her main guns, allowing her to shoot farther, making her key in pounding shore batteries
People have a love affair with world war 2. People don't see it for the scam it is. Nobody needed to bombard anybody. WWII was arranged to scam the taxpayer into buying a lot of weaponary. The few people who manufactured the weapons became very wealthy at the expense of many others. When will people get that.
@AugustusLarch The reason why people talk a lot abour WWII is because the allied powers had to stop the great evil that was trying to dominate the world (Nazi Germany) and also as revenge for pearl harbor and the war also ended the great depression
Nazis were a popular party even int the USA. Linberg was a Nazi for a while. The reason why the German Nazis came to power ismoney from American banks. The depression ended? Really. Maybe they just printed enough money to artiffically stop the depression. We are catching the lag now.
@AugustusLarch Both of your first comments are true, but im not so shure about the third. I believe Hitler and the Nazi party came to power due to the fact germany saw Hitler as a strong leader, even several anti-Nazis supported hitler, and as for the economy, its always like a wave, sometimes it goes up, other times it goes down, but the main thing that drives the economy is spending, and during the war, people bought up war bonds.
Union Bank in the states funded the Nazi war machine. WWII was carefully designed. War bonds were citizens lending money to the government and contributed to inflation. Since war idustries only cost money and return none, the government had to print money out of thin air to pay the redeemed bonds.
A few people got tremdemously rich on scamming the taxpayer and killing millions of people. What's your argument now?
@AugustusLarch I have never heard about Union Bank or of the bank itself. also, printing more money more than likely would not bring the economy up, but decrease the value of the dollar and driving prices up. Before WWII, prices were high, and after WWII, prices were low. The people getting rich on scamming taxpayers ive heard of, and by killing millions of people, that sounds like the mob more than the gov. Also, when young men were drafted, jobs opened for the unemployed and women
Union bank is still operating. Check it out. Prices have been on a steady climb since then. The US economy is so large it has a big lag. During the war the market governed prices. An economy can only afford so many bullets and so many loafs of bread. Millions of people were killed by a war that was engineered. Those new jobs produced a lot items that returned no money and were scrapped right after the war. That's called waste. You are indoctrinated.
@AugustusLarch I'm typing this for my dad- Please stop embarrassing yourself with your lack of truth about history."I'm 89 years old.I was at Pearl Harbor on Dec 7th and a veteran of Normandy. You seem to think that WW2 was aranged? Shame on your ignorance! Yes,the war benefited our economy. But,that was a bi-product of increased mfg to support the war effort. To suggest that WW2 was arranged is utter nonsense! WE were attacked. The only scam was the one Hitler and Tojo used on their own people
It no good to argue with the hypnotized. All I can do work against the hold the cult of the mainstream has on you.
The benifits of war only are to the few who control industirial facillities and the raw materials. Who does war hurt. Working people. People who are working themselves into wealth and have to forsake their good position and time to fight in a conflict that sets a precedent to hurt the freedoms of all people. What's good about people getting that angry?
No my boy...you are the one who is hypnotized. Many working people voluteered to sreve when their country was attacked.Yes, many died. But they died for the benefit of YOU. You seem to think America had a choice. We had no choice but to fight when attacked. Let's just hope you will NEVER have to answer the call.
I DID answer call 70 years ago even though my buddies and I hated the idea of going into combat...so the likes of your generation wouldn't have to live in tierney.
@hofnerjoe Thank you sir for your service, you guys were the best, the Greatest Generation. My Father served as a fighter pilot in the Army Air Corps escorting B-17s to Germany in his P-51. You guys saw what the world needed done and stepped up without question, that showed a character that is rare today. Unfortunately, our country is now populated with cynical little punk narcissists that couldn't be bothered to stop texting and playing video war games to answer the call of need.
@AugustusLarch You really cannot compare the german and italian navy to the IJN which was by far the best axis navy. The royal navy never would have survived in pacific first its carriers were equipted with small air groups, all FAA aircraft were obsolete, they needed american aircraft to have modern aircraft, no way could the RN be victorious at midway, the Swordfish never had to worry going up against carrier based aircraft in atlantic they would have been slaughtered by zeros and IJN AA fire
@Augustus You are spewing pure communist propaganda.

Even though this plane was made to replace the dauntless, the dauntless was still more prefered by pilots

@Davis4037 They would send more bombing missions than topedo missions anyway. The Avenger ended up doing both jobs.
