Also, David Cook is slightly off-key at certain key parts in the song (notably the high parts), and has to strain quite a bit. You're right, Jon Foreman live is on another level. His stage presence is simply amazing.

Why don't you listen to the video you're commenting on? Just listening to the chorus makes it evident that he can't hit the notes in the chorus. Don't tell me he can hit "valid" notes (wtf is a valid note anyways); anyone with even decent relative pitch (clearly not you) can tell that it's off.
