Thanks for the tutorial, I'd just like to suggest that something be done about the volume, I had my speakers turned all of the way up and still couldn't make out what you were saying, had to put on my headphones then with them maxed you sounded like a normal volume. I've noticed a lot of YouTube videos seem to have a volume issue, not all, but a lot.
finally a tut which describes using images and the paint program to texture map an object. I am doing a character rather than a globe. One question is it possible to add multiple images to different parts of the uv map? for example one image for feet and another for the body etc.....
Thank you so much; after following your fantastic tutorial I've managed my first UV Unwrap. I tried several tutorials but I always lost it somewhere along the way; you actually took me through it carefully and didn't assume any knowledge.
Banging my head on my desk for a third night, I came across your tutorial. Thanks! It explains what I have to do with the image file better than the wiki one.
@Nosh5 In Edit mode, press the B key, then left click and drag. You're creating a rectanglular selection of the vertices. When finished, release the left mouse button.
@MultiPadster You're quite welcome. I'm thinking of creating a book (printed and/or ebook) out of the scripts for all my tutorials and charging $25. Would you buy it?
@irakrakow maybe if you covered all avenues of texturing and uv mapping ....I dont use blender for modeling or uv mapping or texturing. I use Silo 3d(For Modeling) Paint.net or Gimp(Painting (including the painting of images to the uv map) and Messiah(For animation). Sadly i dont have Cinema 4d at present! One last tool i need to buy is 3d coat for auto uv mapping plus painting I cant wait till PTEX is fully here. No need for uv mapping anymore. 3d coat supports PTEX painting (images or colors).
Great tut, Ira. This subject has always confused me. But this is the best, simplest tut I've ever seen on it. Now I don't find it so confusing. Thank you for being so clear. I had been using textures in my own oddball way, and having to find bad workarounds when it didn't work out so well. I'm going to refer to this tut a lot in the future, I think....
Hi Ira, nice tut! Question: Is there a way to simply bring in an image into Blender and manually place that image onto a face instead of having to export into Gimp then re-import back into Blender?
I am following the Essential Blender book. In Chapter 10 where this subject is cover, I can't find the command Stick UVs to Mesh Vertex in 2.49 version.
Anyone can help how can I find this command?..Really I need help...
If you join my forum at f o r u m d o t i r a k r a k o w d o t c o m and ask your question, I'm sure you'll get a good answer very quickly. There are many Blender experts who have joined already. The answer probably needs more space than the 500 characters a comment here allows. Thanks.
I have a question about this: Why go to the trouble of exporting the unwrapped image, and using Gimp to position the globe image over the unwrapped triangles? Why not just load the original globe image directly in to Blender and move/scale the unwrapped vertices into place on the image?
yeah i was trying to follow another tutorial and couldn't find lscm lol.. im glad i found you to explain to me how to unwrap.. You are the Boss, thank you...
I already have FX Home in the demo version and I have the upgrade option to the professional version. It works quite well with Blender, and actually saves a lot of time during the animation creation process.
Thank you. You see the difficult thing with Blender tutorials and people leave out key instructions, so folks like me that are new to Blender get very confused. I would very very much like to get the most out of Blender possible. Been checking out books from the library and really studying up on Blender. I hope to make some really Sci -Fi, movies. I will check out your other tutorials, hopefully they will help.

Yes I will keep in touch. I really want to master my use of Blender. I'm reading "Blender For Dummies". Is it possible for someone to create a PDF manual for this software? Which is what they should have done in the first place. Anyway, I'm a sci - fi so I'm eager to learn how to use Blender.

I also have started to include the blend files I created for the tutorials. Eventually I will turn these into a PDF file. I'm thinking of charging for the PDF file, because it really is a book. What do you think?
Excellent Idea!! I've stopped using Blender for the moment. I'm using FX Home right now. Blender had to many bugs. I have a 2.0 GHZ Dual Core 2 processor with 4GB of ram on my Dell laptop, and Blender was still freezing up my computer. What's worst, and just what I started figuring Blender out and really getting into it, the program crashes, and Windows emits program errors. Maybe I'm just making the animations to large, or adding to much detail. A good PDF book that covers ever detail -nice.
I have used movie making software before with great success. Blender seems very poorly designed, half the buttons don't make any sense, there is no easy drag and drop technology in Blender like there is in much more superior movie making software.
I followed the instructions of your video, came out with a different result every time. I finally got an aweful headache and gave up on Blender for good.
Actually, you can use the Video Sequence Editor to mix audio and video clips. It's not that difficult. I haven't done a tutorial on it yet, but perhaps if you check out the Blender wiki or other Youtube tutorials (search Blender VSE) you might have more success. Sorry about your headache.
You can mark seams of any mesh object. Typically, you mark an edge loop. Position the 3D cursor on an edge, in edit mode, and press Alt-R to select the loop. Try this with Suzanne's ears or part of her head. It works real nice.
That's going to be the subject of another tutorial. It involves things like pinning vertices, moving faces around in the UV image editor, and unwrapping again. It's a bit of a skill. Even pros don't get it right the first time many times.
great tutorial, i get an error when saving the .tga - "active object is not a mesh with a texface" I'm probably doing something wrong, but have had this error when following a different tutorial.
Thank you very much for your kind words. I plan on creating many more Blender tutorials. It's comments like yours that give me the encouragement to do more.
