Normally for any fight every clean blow by a boxer is followed up by a huge roar from the crowd in appreciation and awe for how flush a punch was landed.
Here there wasn't that much noise but quite frankly James Toney was landing so many clean punches that eventually the crowd got too tired to try and keep yelling lol.
@bluwng I agree! Foreman talked too much nonsense as a Boxing Analyst. Likeable - and a jolly guy - but who wants to constantly hear about punches on the hips - while Toney is giving a Master Class in Boxing. I did'nt hear Foreman once mention how fluid Tony transistioned from slipping punches to connecting on Barkley.
yeah true, but toney was really the contemporary of archie moore. they have similar defensive stances and both were excellent practitioners of the counterpunch, particularly the counter right.
@jimpurdie Not the same Toney dude this was almost 20 years ago. The Toney randy beat was punchdrunk, old, fat,out of shape and in need of money. Toney is not even a real heavyweight this fight was a middelweight.. I could beat oldass Toney in less then 1 min.. it don't mean shit to beat an old has been boxer who was once great.. Randy didn't even try to stand with him he took him down.Toney looked like a roll poly with his fat ass. Young Toney with some mma training would not go down like dat.
he was just so incredibly relaxed...it's not that toney was super-fast himself, it's more like he was always so calm that his opponents must have seemed like they were at half-speed to him. this version of james toney was my absolute favorite fighter of all time.
toney is amazing.. he got such a unique style, so origianl.. and must be one of the hardest to ever step in the ring. it was like he was born to fight. his amateur record wasnt world class.. top contender type.. toney was build for the pro's
MAN,I FUCKING AGREE !!HOPKINS IS A BEAST,BUT ON THE OTHER HAND AIN'T NOTHING MORE BEAUTIFUL THEN WATCHING JAMES TONEY STAND IN THE POCKET SLIP UR SHIT,SHOULDER ROLL AND POP THE HORSE SHIT OUT OF YOU. I THINK MAYWEATHER IS THE BEST DEFENSIVE FIGHTER OF ALL TIME,BUT TONEY IS A CLOSE SECOND AND MORE ENTERTAINING TO WATCH. THE FIGHT I WOULD GIVE A TESTICAL TO SEE IF IT WAS POSSIBLE "AARON HAWK PRYOR VS THE PACMAN
@rahaji215 If you think Mayweather is a better defensive fighter than James Toney; let alone of all time, you don't know ANYTHING about boxing. Pernell Whitaker is the best defensive fighter of all time... everyone who knows anything about boxing knows that. James Toney is also a better defensive fighter than Floyd... and it's fluid and instinctual. Floyd always seems tense, nervous and rigid. Toney slips, ducks, and weaves under punches from inside... Toney executes the shoulder roll better

Ali was the greatest defensive master of all time, hopping around the ring like he weighed 20 lbs, had a great guard, and then introduced the world to the rope-a-dope he developed that because his guard was so superior he'd take the body shots guard his face and use the ropes... He's basically the greatest of all time, i put him ahead of robinson, maybe not pound for pound cuz a 150 pound ali would of done very little damage, and end up getting dropped.
I think it's more important to be blocking rather than evading. Evading punches sometimes feels more like luck, rather than talent or a gift. Barkley took some of those shots at 8:20, you have to be at a masterclass, Holyfield, Ali, Jones Jr. Whitaker, or even Klitschko to make the decision to keep your hands low.
Blocking and slipping is the name of the game, and that do Toney very well. And having the gift to see the the punches coming i think toney one of the absolutly best! Tough it cant be luck if you evading it over and over, but i understand what you mean. Ali liked to dance a little to much for my liking.
@connymat I know what u mean. Holyfield was quite the dancer, and even singer in the ring lol. I like that tho, the clowning then evading shots is great to watch. Toney is a great fighter, but I think Jones Jr is the best, then Toney, then B-hop tbh. (Mw's.)

Foreman talks too much nonsense. Many of Tony's masterful technique, punches and counter punches are being missed due to incessant unnecesary talk.

@LVSWTZ randy would beat james in a cage fight even if it was a middleweight toney, boxers just cant defend takedowns its that simple.

For me agreat defence is when in puncing range you make the other guy miss. that takes a gift!
