ritchie's playing style means much more to me than morse's, cause imo ritchie feels that kind of music ways better and recognizes what is needed, morse's solos are always built the same way. Just take the first guitar solo of LAZY and compare between ritchie and morse, don't think it can be more obviou

And I would change the title: Blackmore is the best but it's a Deep Purple song and not a Ritchie Blackmore song. There is still Ian Gillan, Jon Lord, Roger Glover and Ian Paice.
The bottom line is this. As fine a guitarist as Ritchie Blackmore is, Deep Purple has proven -- beyond ANY shadow of a doubt -- that they can do it without him just as good as with him. When he broke away and created Rainbow, THEY proved the SAME thing!!
As good a guitarist as Morse is, it's totally unfair AND unjustified to attempt to compare him and Blackmore. That's like comparing Bon Scott and Brian Johnson!! A no brainer!!

Are you kidding me? This guy sucks! As far as quote un quote "Guitar Gods" go, he's the bottom of the barrel! I mean I can play rings around this guy. Unbelievable the shit that people thing is good.
I dont think a lot of people here know who Ritchie Blackmore really is, especially from some of the comments. Do your research he was one of the best!
As you can tell from my youtube name, I am a much bigger fan for steve morse playing with deep purple. Ritchie is sloppy whereas steve is the cleanest best guitarist ever!!!
@MrSteveMorse No comparison there. Morse is a REAL guitar player....I'd rather stick my pecker in a meat grinder than listen to this guy. Morse is great no matter who he played with. My favorite Morse er was when he was with the Dixie Dregs.
@williamcbo I saw DP with Morse a few years ago. It was a free private gig and I'm a player who admired him in the Dregs. However, after about 20 mins I wandered into another room. He was just widdling on the neck pickup and all that speedy scalar stuff was totally ineffectual in the DP context. He just didn't have Blackmore's gift for ear-catching phrases using a relatively clean sound by today's standds. Pple like you think technique is speed, for music to last it demands more subtlety.
@sludgefingers I agree with you. Speed is simply a tool and all the technique and speed in the world does not make you unique. Phrasing and the soul with which you play is what makes you unique. That being said, Blackmore never did much for me in those areas. Not a critique, just a preference. May I suggest you check out Danny Gatton. May not be your cup of tea but if you love the guitar, he is worth a listen.
@sludgefingers YEEEES to this! There is a huge difference between being a guitar gymnast and a music genious- which Ritchie certainly is. Steve just does't cut it in DP. Bernie Torme (off top of my head) would've been better fit.
Blackmore and his clone Malmsteen are great guitar players yet they are egotistical.. People fail to realize that it takes more than just one member to make a band! DEEP PURPLE is still is a great band...hats off to Ian Paice, the only true member left!!
@freddiecoldcuts Agreed, I've read several articles that state Blackmore can be somewhat difficult to work with - but damn he sure can play. Besides, the current Deep Purple lineup doesn't miss a beat with Steve Morse doing the guitar work - I believe Morse could cover just about any rock guitar player out there. I believe the bass player, Roger Glover, is still playing with Deep Purple. So the current band lineup would actually include three original members - Paice, Glover and singer Gillam
@philclement Steve Morse is freaking awesome, by far one of the most underrated guitar players of all time. Their live performance in 06' at Montreux is great, Morse plays some great tribute medleys and his solo performance is superb. Nick Simpler and Rod Evans were the original bass player and vocalist, like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, Deep Purple has an interesting family tree with branches shooting out everywhere!
@philclement I here all the time " Steve Morse is GREAT, bla. bla,bla..." Why does his vintage Purle song's soloing SUCK then? For some reason he sounds off key on most important solos and very, very unimaginative. If U can't make your own memorable solo interpretation then just play what's already created by R.B. that's what people want to hear anyway. His phrasing is wrong even on Smoke on the water main riff. Saw them at the concert last night and been playing guitar for long time..
Do yourself a favour and buy their live album 'Made in Japan', the greatest hard rock live album ever made as far as I'm concerned. They were all at their peak, man even today nothing stands close. Every single musician in the band earned their supper. Still my favourite album of all time. Now that's saying a lot. Cheers John Sydney.
My 1st heavy album was Machine Head in the 70s, I was around 14 then, and I saw them at the Nassau Coliseum a year, or 2 later. I did not really start to appreciate the musicianship (with any band for that matter) until I was in my early 30s. If I can put together all the Bands who added up to STELLAR, and Profound in their professionalism, their musicianship, tightness, in the pocket groove, phenomenal tone/etc. it would have to be Purple leading the list. Yes Clapton was God, but not for long
Do believe the last opinion. Deep Purple... Best band ever for some, that is not a one man job, for sure. Keys, bass, drums and vocals (and guitar) made the band...
Though, Blackmore is an amazing artist.
Steve mores... as lazy he plays the solo's... good job!
I have to say this show was my favorite. Blackmore was like super on the ball for this. The Child In Time solo from this show is absolutely amazing. He's got an amazing touch when it comes to the notes.
The band is playing this song too fast, especially Blackmore. Listen to Made in Japan...they...play...it...slooowww! I saw this concert and feel that they were just going thru the motions, played it too fast just to be done with it. "Yep, we played Lazy, now whats next" Its not that they couldn't play it as good as in 1973, its that they didn't care. Because when they played their newer stuff, they did a better job. Listen how Gillan starts playing harmonica and Blackmore's soloing. Not good!
Blackmore, Lord and Gillan were monster egos. Glover and Paice were more down to earth and formed a fabulous rhythm section. The band was one of the best of the era. I saw Rainbow at a show at the FOX in Atlanta in the late 70's and Blackmore was better than ever.
all this talk bout Blackmore and Gillan, seems like every1 forgot bout Roger Glover and Ian Paice AND Jon Lord(wen he was part of the group)..i think each member is extremely talented and essential to the deep purple sound
i would give ian and rb equal billing for the success of purple/tho if ya held a gun to my head, id say rb is more important.he certainly plays with authority.
Blackmore is indeed arrogant, but that man truly has a gift. He is, and remains my favorite guitarist of all time. I have seen Deep Purple without him and they are still good. Maybe, they wont reach the same sucess they had with him in it, but they are still great?
Just an opinion here but in every interview I've ever seen of Blackmore, he comes off as an arrogant, conceited ass, he honestly believes he was the only reason Deep Purple was as huge as it was as a band. That said, he does have the chops to back up his bragging. Just too bad he can't take his ego down a notch or two...or maybe three.
@DreamHealer87 Hey no one played as he did Calpton played inept blues Jimmy played as best he could Hendix blew his wad there really was only blackmore if you dont beleive it do some reasearch. Yea jimmmy page had some riffs so did hendrix but no one had blackmores shit. Deep Purple Rocked Big Ego yea but credit no could there be connection?
@mdm172 i dunno man i thought the same thing, but when i saw some video interviews he doesnt come out like that, i think on written interviews the media exaggerates him
@mdm172 You hit the nail on the head with what you said about Blackmore I have been in two band that broke up because of ego's and it is said when that happens Ego's have NO place in bands. Its a group of people playing together not just one or two people it is ALL of them that make the band great. Egos suck.
@bigguy4570 blackmore is the the boss yeah, he said in 72 (backstage in his own seperat room) that the credits of the songs were only split between the five of them because of pride. it was easy. so when glover said that In Rock was a band in writhing, blackmore led them to believe it. Its on the highlights and history dvd.
but without his ego we wouldn't deep purple or rainbow (the dio years for gods sake )
@mdm172 Where did he say that? What do you know? Blackmore was responsible for the schism that became In Rock and the rest is history. Read the interviews at the time. Lord: wanted to do Concerto, Blackmore indulged him "okay, I'll go along, but then we try it my way". Result?..... in Rock. I think you need to re-adjust your own arrogance before commenting such BS.
@mdm172 He just explains it the way it is. He won't give someone credits for things they didn't do. The fact is, that only him and Lord did any compositions. When Hughes and Coverdale started doing their thing, it was over. He's simply genius and no one can get in his way. And I think he's just aware of that.
@mdm172 well go and watch purple now and tell me what you see, blackmore was kind of hard to work with but that is coming from Ian Gillian, you don't hear from Ritchie to take up from himself cause the sparse interviews but without blackmore my friend purple wouldn't be who they are today
@mdm172 that is why most people left his bands... Listen to an Ian Gillan interview... I love Blackmore... one of my all time favorite guitar players... I've based my own playing on him... but he has a bad reputation
@mdm172 arrogant ok however a genious (lennon, waters...)
u' rigt sayng that deep purple xas not only blackmore someone toldme watching a concert in dijon (medium town in center east of France) black..argued with Gillan and left the stage give a fu.. on the audience
@mdm172 ...My dear friend, if you would look into the past history of Deep Purple you will find that it was Mr. Blackmore who almost single handedly save the group from a fate worse than death.
@bigal1670 I'm pretty well versed in the history of DP and I lived and breathed Purple in the late 60's early 70's. Could play Blackmore's licks note for note when I was 14 years old. Of course Blackmore was a reason for their success. But not THE reason by any stretch.
It took musical chemistry to have their unique style and an amazing production staff to create the unique sound. Imagine Lazy WITHOUT a Hammond organ. Bottom Line: No man is an island.... I'm just sayin'
@mdm172 I totally agree.. He is totally a weird at times.. Like california jam.. see what crazy things he do? if he can take now his ego and weirdness.. deep purple will be better then ever..
@mdm172 AGREE he is an arse but he has played some of the best solos in rock - ever. If he could ever get control of his ego he could have gone on for ever like Jeff Beck. Its a shame but who has heard of Blackmore now?
@mdm172 Well from a perspective that is outside the box, I mean someone who did not follow like apparently so many of you guys did, I must agree with both sides of the fence, He definitely can play great!!! But I wish I was blind so I enjoy the music better and not have to watch his arrogance and fakey gestures. It looks like he's a chipmunk chewing on an acorn.
@mdm172 I couldn't agree more. I saw him live a number of times and was always disappointed. His ego always prevented him from playing well. Besides, listening to him now I realise that he wasn't a very good guitarist anyway!
@mdm172 : yea sure, I have never heard Ritchie say that. To the contrary, he has stated that DP are great musicians, oh excuse me, he did say that Gillan had lost his stead and mentioned that he could sing back then in an interview which is/was the truth period.
@mdm172 Who gives a shit what his attitude is like? The guy is one of the greatest guitar player's ever, period. If he were the hostess down at your local Denny's I could see spending the time on this type of 'deep introspective critique', but he's not. He plays the guitar for a living and doesn't care how your attitude is either.

the best deep purple lord blackmore paice the genesis
zepefon 1 year ago
Blackmore, Lord and Gillan were monster egos. Glover and Paice were more down to earth and formed a fabulous rhythm section. The band was one of the best of the era. I saw Rainbow at a show at the FOX in Atlanta in the late 70's and Blackmore was better than ever.

all this talk bout Blackmore and Gillan, seems like every1 forgot bout Roger Glover and Ian Paice AND Jon Lord(wen he was part of the group)..i think each member is extremely talented and essential to the deep purple sound

It thinks so from the feeling of Ian peace.

@mdm172 i dunno man i thought the same thing, but when i saw some video interviews he doesnt come out like that, i think on written interviews the media exaggerates him
juliovac 1 year ago
@mdm172 You hit the nail on the head with what you said about Blackmore I have been in two band that broke up because of ego's and it is said when that happens Ego's have NO place in bands. Its a group of people playing together not just one or two people it is ALL of them that make the band great. Egos suck.
bigguy4570 1 year ago
@bigguy4570 blackmore is the the boss yeah, he said in 72 (backstage in his own seperat room) that the credits of the songs were only split between the five of them because of pride. it was easy. so when glover said that In Rock was a band in writhing, blackmore led them to believe it. Its on the highlights and history dvd.
but without his ego we wouldn't deep purple or rainbow (the dio years for gods sake )
he can keep blackmores night
hngka3jlut 1 year ago
@mdm172 why do you care about that? are you gonna marry him? just listen to the music and stfu already.
rainbowpal3 1 year ago
@mdm172 Where did he say that? What do you know? Blackmore was responsible for the schism that became In Rock and the rest is history. Read the interviews at the time. Lord: wanted to do Concerto, Blackmore indulged him "okay, I'll go along, but then we try it my way". Result?..... in Rock. I think you need to re-adjust your own arrogance before commenting such BS.
dbaytug 1 year ago
@mdm172 He just explains it the way it is. He won't give someone credits for things they didn't do. The fact is, that only him and Lord did any compositions. When Hughes and Coverdale started doing their thing, it was over. He's simply genius and no one can get in his way. And I think he's just aware of that.
Sunchild333 1 year ago
@mdm172 you reckon? Theres a recent interview where he appears quite humble and unassuming. At least he no covered in gold jewellery like malsteem

wrestlingcircuit1995 1 year ago
@mdm172 well go and watch purple now and tell me what you see, blackmore was kind of hard to work with but that is coming from Ian Gillian, you don't hear from Ritchie to take up from himself cause the sparse interviews but without blackmore my friend purple wouldn't be who they are today
rmf09020 1 year ago
@mdm172 But he always says "my ego is really low", so is that true??
edgarrg94 1 year ago
@mdm172 agreed, but still, if i'd have to grade them, Ritchie would be still the number one, above all.

@mdm172 that is why most people left his bands... Listen to an Ian Gillan interview... I love Blackmore... one of my all time favorite guitar players... I've based my own playing on him... but he has a bad reputation

@mdm172 He's pretty much never serious in his interviews. He just has a really dry sense of humor.

@mdm172 ...My dear friend, if you would look into the past history of Deep Purple you will find that it was Mr. Blackmore who almost single handedly save the group from a fate worse than death.
bigal1670 1 year ago
@bigal1670 I'm pretty well versed in the history of DP and I lived and breathed Purple in the late 60's early 70's. Could play Blackmore's licks note for note when I was 14 years old. Of course Blackmore was a reason for their success. But not THE reason by any stretch.
It took musical chemistry to have their unique style and an amazing production staff to create the unique sound. Imagine Lazy WITHOUT a Hammond organ. Bottom Line: No man is an island.... I'm just sayin'
Peace, My Friend

@mdm172 I totally agree.. He is totally a weird at times.. Like california jam.. see what crazy things he do? if he can take now his ego and weirdness.. deep purple will be better then ever..
JunhaoMusic 1 year ago
@mdm172 AGREE he is an arse but he has played some of the best solos in rock - ever. If he could ever get control of his ego he could have gone on for ever like Jeff Beck. Its a shame but who has heard of Blackmore now?
kathmandoo 1 year ago
@mdm172 Well from a perspective that is outside the box, I mean someone who did not follow like apparently so many of you guys did, I must agree with both sides of the fence, He definitely can play great!!! But I wish I was blind so I enjoy the music better and not have to watch his arrogance and fakey gestures. It looks like he's a chipmunk chewing on an acorn.
Hittman67 1 year ago
@mdm172 I couldn't agree more. I saw him live a number of times and was always disappointed. His ego always prevented him from playing well. Besides, listening to him now I realise that he wasn't a very good guitarist anyway!
masala505 1 year ago
@mdm172 : yea sure, I have never heard Ritchie say that. To the contrary, he has stated that DP are great musicians, oh excuse me, he did say that Gillan had lost his stead and mentioned that he could sing back then in an interview which is/was the truth period.
zanatural 11 months ago
@mdm172 I know Ritchie and he is the most sincere and Thoughtful person I have ever met. Funny as all hell too!
jimp656 11 months ago
@mdm172 Who gives a shit what his attitude is like? The guy is one of the greatest guitar player's ever, period. If he were the hostess down at your local Denny's I could see spending the time on this type of 'deep introspective critique', but he's not. He plays the guitar for a living and doesn't care how your attitude is either.
