@assassinscreed1723 In old Japan, ninjas and samurais lived by honor. Whenever a ninja or samurai was defeated or have retreated from battle, he would try to regain that honor by kneeling before his master and cutting open his own stomach. It's a show of bravery. That you didn't lose because you were a coward or afraid to die.
Such an act was called "Hara-Kiri".
