I love how the women ask Portia about her marriage expecting her to say how much work and difficulty it is, and Portia just says, "....Um, no. I love Ellen and my life feels relaxed and serene with her as my wife."
And the ladies look at Portia like "...wait, are we still talking about marriage here?"
Lol Portia has the same nervous habit as me- her hands are constantly moving and rubs her fingers together. On a more serious note it sickens me that Elizabeth thinks its only the word "marriage" that is important to the gay community and not the actual act of being married, how can she be so small minded?! Portia was so polite and eloquently spoken and what she said is so true.... Love Portia forever and her and Ellen seriously have true love.
She amazes me. Honestly, she's so beautiful inside and out and so intelligent. She really expresses herself so well. I wish I could be so articulate.. She's really an inspiration.
Loved Portia's mixed expression of disbelief and amusement when Elizabeth said her stupid analogy. xD
Suspect Portia got the wrong impression of Joy though. Joy was speaking about other peoples' problem with using the word 'marriage', which is not her own view.
@TheVictoriaGaga Oh, ok I didn't know that. I listen for her aussie accent and can't hear it!
Re Simon Baker, I heard an interview with him once on 'Today Tonight' and his accent was full on American even with an Aussie reporter!
That's why I thought that.
Mel Gibson's another one I don't get. I know he was born in the US but he was educated here and I just can't understand how he lost ALL of his Mad Max/Gallipoli accent. There's not a trace.
@toddles9 i've been living in the uk for 10 years and now have a fairly strong english accent, however when i go home to Oz, the aussie gets stronger.
How come Portia de Rossi and Simon Baker both lost their natural accents after a few years but Olivia Newton John and Paul Hogan sound exactly the same after living in the US for decades?
Accents are usually set by age 12 in most humans. They haven't 'lost' their Aussie accent at all, they are just not using it anymore.
What about Don Lane, Chelsea Brown and Marcia Hines? They all still sound American and they've lived in Oz for at least 30 years.
I feel like I am blessed to live in Canada, this isn't a debate here. Everyone has the right to be who they are, love who they do and marry who they want. :) Whether you are gay, straight, transgendered you are a human being and we all deserve the same rights. Love is universal, not defined by boarders and not controllable it is a beautiful gift that should be treasured no matter where we find it! <3
@livetolivelife I feel the same way! Watching this clip reminded me how lucky I am to be in Canada. My girlfriend and I want to get married eventually, and it's not an issue for us. It's shocking to me that America can be so backwards in their thinking...It really is sad. Hopefully things will change!
@livetolivelife yeh its amazing to think that in this day and age were still not equal i live in the uk and we have "civil partnerships" come on just make everyone equal i think that when future generations look back they will be shocked that the world could be this way in 2010
if your against gays getting married theres a simple answer dont marry a gay person otherwise it really doesnt effect you!

for her to say it's PURELY civil rights & not a religious or moral issue is completely ignorant - only someone who doesn't hold to a religion forbidding homosexuality could say such a thing, but a LOT of people do. so... yeah... ignorant.
@sprinklefriend But atheists can marry. So marriage isn't a religious issue for all people. Only, as you say, a lot of people. Just don't let gays marry in church let them marry in courts.
@sprinklefriend What are you talking about? It IS a civil rights issue. Religion and 'morals' shouldn't even come into it, and it's pathetic that people think they do.
"Yes, bless her, she will!" I think many people owe Ellen Degenerous a "thank you" for opening the day-time-tv-lesbian-is-totally-acceptable slot for most grown women!
@Jebus1346 she has stated in the past that she took voice coaching to lose her Australian accent because she thought it would help her career to have an American accent living and working in America.
@Jebus1346 People tend to revert back to their first language, or real accent, when upset. She probably let their comments about marriage sink in for a moment, and felt a little annoyed. She didn't look very happy by the end of the interview. I wouldn't be either if someone had just questioned my right to love my partner on the same terms as everyone else.
@nhetism The Aussie accent is NOTHING like the American accent. Our television shows (I'm Australian) that we have made ourselves use the Aussie accent... COMPLETELY different.
@BitchesCallMeTFree a lot of australians don't talk with their accents, u'd be amazed how many australians actors are out there that you wouldnt even know
@magicbutterfly0 IT helps your argument if you are coherent and don't refer to things in plural form when they are singular. Seriously, you come off as a screeching dipshit.
it really is just a civil rights issue. but what i don't get is whatever happend to the separation of state and church. i for one don't believe that anyone's religious views should justify state legislation that suppresses minority and denies rights.
@blueeyedsnowboarder My God finally someone who thinks like me!!!!! For a minute I felt like an idiot cause no one gets my point!!!!! Thanks Thanks Thanks
Haha yeah I heard the Aussie accent creeping in as well :P I love Portia and she really did a great job in this interview. That hasselbeck's analogy was terrible... Sorry but I really can't stand her!
