@stinkyfinger5000 The M1 had 16-bit samples, that's what distinguished it from D-50 8-bit samples. Who needs a monitor on an instrument? Just get a PC instead and forget about fine tactile instruments.
Does this have its own sound output, or is it like a midi controller? I'm a little new to all this electronic music business, and I would like to find a good stage synth without having to hook it up to a laptop at shows.
Does anybody here know how the Korg M1 Soft Synth from the Legacy Digital Bundle stands against this Hardware M1. Is there much difference in Sound? Just interested if they did a good Job at Korg or not becouse the Wavestation Software Synth is fantastic and i would like to know if I need the Digital Edition including the Korh M1 Software Synthesizer...By the way, I love the Sound of the Korg M1 - the Synthesizer of the Ninties were anyway better then the new ones coming out latly.
The M1 has character, what you can't say about modern workstations. This character results not only from the technical concept, also the early D/A converters and imperfection of the old hardware contribute to this special sound.
I like the M1 more than a D-50, because the m1 is easy to programm without any programmers / editor software.
Hello! I have bought one few days ago, so Im new in it. Can you tell me where did you get this sounds? Can you transfer them one to one sound into the korg from computer?
Thanks for posting this, about the Korg M1 - a cool synth when programmed optimally. The factory sounds are nowhere nearly as good as the M1 is capable of producing. The best synth patches for this classic synth (& Legacy VST) can be found at manymidi.com
This video is a pure proof that the M1 is a fantastic instrument, and everything that Korg made after that, was just to squeeze more money out of us by making us believe that the later the synth, the greater. That is simply not true. The M1 is enough. If you can't do with M1, then you can't do with anything else.
@dvamateur This would be one of the very few intelligent and true comment / statement about an instrument.you are right all korgs past m1 have no major improvements but this iseven more true for roland past the d50 / jd800. Nothing goodcame from these compagnies since the early 90's
@alphacode909 Well, I am not saying that the new synths are not good, because they sound good, but they just don't satisfy my aesthetic needs. To me, DX7 and D-50 are like Fender Stratocaster and Gibson Les Paul. Timeless designs. For guitar players looks and feel of an instrument are very crucial, why not for keyboard players? Why isn't the audio business getting it? I just don't dig the soft synths, becuase there's no look and feel of an instrument to them at all... Okay, I am old.

Its a sad fact mate but its true. Neither Korg or Roland have released anything even eyebrow raising since this millennium. Not a thing and thats between them.
@alphacode909 Well, I agree with you guys. There is only one highlight that roland made : the XP-60/XP-80. I own a XP-80, and of course it is not as good as for instance a Korg M1, but it is a great synth. I hope comapanies like Korg and Roland will pick it up again with synths like the M1.
@kolakube123 : I don't totally aggre... Some machines are exceptions... With Roland, for example, the V-Synth (XT) is really interesting because of its VariPhrase integration within a synth structure.
After the M1, Korg released the WS serie... But it's a long time ago, now...
The Golden Age of True Synths is dead... It's now the Age of Huge SoundBanks....
i love my M1. but polyphony is one of the reason the later models are "greater", not necessarily sound wise. but M1's UI despite being just 2 lines of LCDs, surprisingly very intuitive. there are missing sounds many sounds missing, but present in the 01/W.
M1 is great, 01/W is greater
oh yeah, M1's sax is still way better than many today's boards
@dvamateur I love the M1, but the Trinity is also SWEET! To me the Triton, & all that came afterwards just can't compare with the sound quality. Don't get me wrong, Kronos is bad ass, but the older Korg synths seem to have a much lusher sound to them.
@TrendyhendyPD - I'm not saying from an ethical point of view to do this Trendy, but you can actually download this keyboard for free from a website like vstclub.соm
It's called the Korg Legacy Collection. You just hook your midi controller to your computer, or get a usb to midi cable that allows you to hook a regular keyboard up to a computer, then get a VST host that'll play VSTs & VSTi's. Even something simple like Hermannseib's vsthost program. Then just download & play that exact keyboard.
@AnalogAudio1 well they are completely different really ,different tone ,different character ,you would have to have both imho... I would recomment a Polysix /d50 / dx7 II / M1 / and Jd-800 for a perfect 80s/90s setup all together should be 2000$ tops and you can't go wrong with these...
Wow! It's probably at least 10 years old and yet still retains such good audio quality! The magnificent Korg quality shines through! And nice playing too!
I bought my M1 back in 1996 for 1200 Deutsch Mark. It's spent many year in my cupboard. I will never sell it. The M1 will always be a remarkable synth. I also have a Korg Poly800 too.
@JohnF30Music Well in theory but you have to imagine listening to these sounds 20 years ago and the wow factor then was far, far greater than any softsynth today. This and the vsti version actually sounds better than most softsynths today because it has excellent synth presets and a good range of real world sounds and experimental plus this created a whole generation of dance music back in the 90s due to its classic piano, bass and organ sounds. Not many softsynths can claim that today.
@JohnF30Music I'm not really proving anyone wrong, I'm saying that the M1 is special. It has a unique set of sounds that no other synth has, you can tell an M1 a mile away whereas most new synths are much harder to seperate because they try to be all singing all dancing. The majority of softsynths do not impress me in the same way which explains why my fav softsynth is the Legacy collection. Obviously not the most advanced synth but one of the best sounding along with the Wavestation
I've been thinking about getting a synthesizer to use for a cheap alternative to the hammond organ sound (as apposed to the typical electronic sounds they are usually associated with) in a live band. There's tons of dirt cheap synths on ebay - which are the brands/types that would be appropriate for me?
Also - would you feed them through the P.A., Their own P.A. or some kind of seperate backline rig?
@OIIIlllIIIO well put it this way, any commercially released record in the late 80's and early 90's that had an organ sound on it which wasn't a hammond was usually a korg m1.
Hi, I just wondered which sound bank you used for this video, planning on doing some depeche mode, I could create the sound but I have all the program banks so if you know which one it is it'd be easier. cheers :)
Simply amazing. What a great demo, your excellent, you'th convinced me, I need one for my collection. I just wish I had your skill. keep it up, well done, and thanks for posting. LOL .
I owned an M1, but sold it last summer. It still has some of the best sound effects and programs you'll ever find in any synthesizer. Each synth is very special - I also miss the Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 that I sold last summer, but I had to make room for keyboards that I'll actually use on a regular basis (for jazz). Thanks for posting this demo. It really makes the M1 shine!
Interesting demo. I really liked the cello sounds on my old Korg Poly 800. I have an old DX7, but need a synth with good cello sounds. Would you say the cello sounds on the M1 are realistic? What would be a good synth to buy for cello sounds? Thanks, Keith Smart
hey dude i was wondering if by any chance u can show me how to get the violin sound to work because u just got an m1 Korg and i cant get the violin to work, get back at me when u can.
i have the legendary korg m1 with some patches from the magnificent roland d50 that i edited myself and they sound identical i will say,the only problem is this is my first time uploading with a camera and i had some latency on the audio
@Solaris1992 Yeah the American version used the Ensoniq MR76 for a lot of it. My music teacher had one and I will never get those presets out of my head!
Hi. I´ve just bought a second-hand one, but it's got an iff, the number controls to change the preset don't work properly. I was going to change them but it cost me a lot. I see you change some presets with the controls on the left part. Is there a real alternative to the number controls? Thanks.
When I was in High School, I always wanted a M1. That an a DX7 FDII. I never did get one. Now I have a Motif ES 7, and I bought the Korg Legacy Collection Digital Edition which has the M1 and all the cards made for it and it has the Wavestation with all the cards.
you will find that they are presets but totally customizable I have had mine for 20 years and just bringing it out of the mothballs after 10 years because it still is one of the best and you can get all sorts of patches. touch sensitivity is fantastic.
Fantastic bit of kit. I went searching for one of these about 5 years ago and ended up with the Korg MicroX which don't get me wrong is a serious bit of kit and way ahead of the M1 but I regret it now. M1 has magic that no other synth has touched on. Great demo. Thanks man.
The Korg Legacy Collection is pretty cheap, not much dearer than a 2nd hand M1.
You get a lot more for your money as well. All cards ever released for the M1 are included. It's 256-voice as well. You don't have to worry about a nother stereo pair of inputs either. It's digital, so there shouldn't be any differences. If there is, it's probably because of the M1's converter.
@alphacode909 -- The version I have Alpha is called the Legacy Collection. It consists of the MS-20, PolySix, M1, Mono/Poly, Wavestation, and the Legacy Cell. All of these sounds you're playing, or capable of playing right here on your demo, are on that beautiful prestine collection, and accurate to a tee. Plus there are SO many more sounds because of the other included synths, it's unbelievable!. If you get a chance, get it. It's absolutely phenomenal.
buenas, yo me he descargado algunos de estos sonidos por Internet. Hay un millón de ellos por ahí, y si tienes la paciencia de repasar los bancos encontrarás verdaderas joyas
What was that? I thought Roland D-50 was the Pad Master, but now you made me confused! Never thought M1could do such lush pads all that fat and dense! Sick synth, dude!
yes, get a midi interface and use plug that into your usb port. midi works better than standard usb anyways. you can use any midi samples from logic to play on the keyboard
dose the m1 have built in speakers.

True ! But pentatonic scales and music could be played in white keys as well.
In general they are very well suited for folk music, not syntheziser music...
Anyway, may be I´m wrong ... this instrument sounds so beautiful !

I bought my M1 back in 1996 for 1200 Deutsch Mark. It's spent many year in my cupboard. I will never sell it. The M1 will always be a remarkable synth. I also have a Korg Poly800 too.

nice but nothing any software synth can't do
JohnF30Music 1 year ago
@JohnF30Music Well in theory but you have to imagine listening to these sounds 20 years ago and the wow factor then was far, far greater than any softsynth today. This and the vsti version actually sounds better than most softsynths today because it has excellent synth presets and a good range of real world sounds and experimental plus this created a whole generation of dance music back in the 90s due to its classic piano, bass and organ sounds. Not many softsynths can claim that today.
maccagrabme 1 year ago
@maccagrabme i don't see how you prove what i said wrong. you basically agreed with me by saying that.
JohnF30Music 1 year ago
@JohnF30Music I'm not really proving anyone wrong, I'm saying that the M1 is special. It has a unique set of sounds that no other synth has, you can tell an M1 a mile away whereas most new synths are much harder to seperate because they try to be all singing all dancing. The majority of softsynths do not impress me in the same way which explains why my fav softsynth is the Legacy collection. Obviously not the most advanced synth but one of the best sounding along with the Wavestation

Hi! nice playing!
what is the name of preset of "Depeche mode - enjoy the silence"?
EitB91 1 year ago
I've been thinking about getting a synthesizer to use for a cheap alternative to the hammond organ sound (as apposed to the typical electronic sounds they are usually associated with) in a live band. There's tons of dirt cheap synths on ebay - which are the brands/types that would be appropriate for me?
Also - would you feed them through the P.A., Their own P.A. or some kind of seperate backline rig?
OIIIlllIIIO 1 year ago
@OIIIlllIIIO well put it this way, any commercially released record in the late 80's and early 90's that had an organ sound on it which wasn't a hammond was usually a korg m1.

I've owned an M1 for about 5 years, just can't grow to love it at all ... is it just me?
I have 9 synthesizers and the M1 is 1st on the list for departure. I like having control at my fingertips... much prefer Roland & Yamaha.

Hi, I just wondered which sound bank you used for this video, planning on doing some depeche mode, I could create the sound but I have all the program banks so if you know which one it is it'd be easier. cheers :)

It really makes the M1 shine!

i really like the patch @ 2:14
is there any way to translate it for the legacy digital M1? is it a preset or a custom patch?

Interesting demo. I really liked the cello sounds on my old Korg Poly 800. I have an old DX7, but need a synth with good cello sounds. Would you say the cello sounds on the M1 are realistic? What would be a good synth to buy for cello sounds? Thanks, Keith Smart

i have the legendary korg m1 with some patches from the magnificent roland d50 that i edited myself and they sound identical i will say,the only problem is this is my first time uploading with a camera and i had some latency on the audio

@Solaris1992 Yeah the American version used the Ensoniq MR76 for a lot of it. My music teacher had one and I will never get those presets out of my head!
Gazdatronik 1 year ago

Now I have a Motif ES 7, and I bought the Korg Legacy Collection Digital Edition which has the M1 and all the cards made for it and it has the Wavestation with all the cards.
kb420ps 1 year ago
you will find that they are presets but totally customizable I have had mine for 20 years and just bringing it out of the mothballs after 10 years because it still is one of the best and you can get all sorts of patches. touch sensitivity is fantastic.

Can anyone tell me what patch or combination is being used on the 1:15 - 1:35 segment. Please help, awesome sound. Best ambient synth ever.
akablenk71 1 year ago 8
@akablenk71 sounds like a synth bass, with an echo delay. not sure on the delay time. very basic sound. also with a touch of flange.
ollieroks 1 year ago
@akablenk71 It probably is just a saw/square wave with a cool delay... ;)

Fantastic bit of kit. I went searching for one of these about 5 years ago and ended up with the Korg MicroX which don't get me wrong is a serious bit of kit and way ahead of the M1 but I regret it now. M1 has magic that no other synth has touched on. Great demo. Thanks man.

do u know if theres any difference between this m1 and the soft one from korg legacy digital collection?
tonato17 2 years ago
There is very little difference i have to say but the m1 are fairly cheap so if you can get one :)
alphacode909 2 years ago 3
The Korg Legacy Collection is pretty cheap, not much dearer than a 2nd hand M1.
You get a lot more for your money as well. All cards ever released for the M1 are included. It's 256-voice as well. You don't have to worry about a nother stereo pair of inputs either. It's digital, so there shouldn't be any differences. If there is, it's probably because of the M1's converter.
The M1's aren't very well built either.
I hardly ever see a pristine M1.
Geeljasjes 1 year ago
@alphacode909 i m telling stupid things here the legacy collection had the Wavestation not M1 does it ? hmm...
alphacode909 1 year ago
@alphacode909 -- The version I have Alpha is called the Legacy Collection. It consists of the MS-20, PolySix, M1, Mono/Poly, Wavestation, and the Legacy Cell. All of these sounds you're playing, or capable of playing right here on your demo, are on that beautiful prestine collection, and accurate to a tee. Plus there are SO many more sounds because of the other included synths, it's unbelievable!. If you get a chance, get it. It's absolutely phenomenal.
