Here's a fun fact: Nintendo, after making Mother, (AKA Earthbound Zero) in 1989, (only in Japan up until 2003,) a mistake was made by a sprite editor. When designing Pocket Monsters Red and Green, (the first Pokemon games,) in 1996, an unnamed editor pulled up Giegue's sprite and modified it. And thus Mewtwo's design was born! Mewtwo wouldn't be the same if it weren't for that editor.

Yes, but you are wrong on something.

Genitalia does develop the same in everyone, however it isn't developed by the gene specifically, the gene actually controls the production of hormones that develop sexual organs, that is testosterone or estrogen.

And male genitalia doesn't drop off in girls, it inverts itself into the body, the gonads becoming ovaries, if more estrogen is being produced by the influence of the x chromosome, of course.
