I almost almost cried when I saw this in 2001. I was really touched when I firt saw this animation on HBO Family. Thank you very very much for posting this. It almost made me cry yesterday when I watched this.
The first time i saw this short was in 99 or 2000. I remember being instantly distracted of whatever it was I was doing at the time and started holding back the tears welling up in my eyes. I remember cursing at the kid "f#$@%$g kid for making me cry" when it was all over and they revealed it was made by a 14yr old. Since I only saw it the one time I could not remember what the name of the video was. I had a hard time looking for it until today. Damn thing still makes me f@#$%!$%g cry!!!
I remember seeing this when I was about 7 years old and I couldn't stop crying because it was so touching to me. Even now, after seeing 13 years of not seeing it until now it can still work its magic over me.
Wooow! This is sooo sad! I remember watching this on HBO Family sooo long ago and crying. This is a really good animation for a 14 year old! I missed this sooo much now Im sad again but yay i like this video
I've been looking for this video since it aired on HBO back around 2002. I'm so glad I finally found it. It's the most touching short film I've ever seen.
My beloved cat Stormy was just diagnoed with cancer (and I'm due any day to give birth). I think of him whenever I hear this song and it makes me cry hysterically, to see this video again really breaks my heart as it reminds me of him again. I had seen this video on HBO years ago and I remember it reducing me to tears then and it still does. Beautifully done and goes to show that animals can miss us too :(
I first saw this many years ago during a film fest in Chicago. I was so touched then and am glad to have found it. My 8 yr. old daughter and I both cry!
Really touching! I thought some of the animation (particularly the eyes) really gave you a sense of how the dog was feeling. So great to see some clay films made by a young person which aren't total gorefests... And now, many years on, I am on the edge of my seat waiting to see Fox and Calf.
It's not just the owner leaving. It's the kid that grew up with the dog and then left the house when he was old enough. So the dog is remembering all of the years they spent together, and wondering where he is.
By the way, the producer, Ryan McCulloch, had surgery for a brain tumour at age 15 or so. I suspect the video relates to his personal situation. He was kind enough to send me the video and a couple more as a gift. A wonderful family, the McCullochs.
I saw this about 4 months after I was diagnosed with leukemia. I had become a single dad of a 1 1/2 year old daughter a month before diagnosis. Did I identify ?
You bet. The tears flowed, but 10 years later I am still here. What a moving piece of artistry.
This video actually had such an impact on me that I wrote to Carly Simon to ask her if she knew what it was called and what song was used so I could find it! She actually wrote me and told me. I am so glad I finally found it. It is amazing how such a little song can have such an impact. My kids still can't watch it (now 12 and 18) because it makes them cry.
So, I asked her if she recalled the song, and she did, but couldn't remember the video. Luckily, I found it here. She is eight years old now. After about 30 seconds, I turn to her, and she's - once again - silently crying hysterically about it. She can't even tell me why it's sad for her, but it just strikes a chord. After 15 minutes, she's STILL crying as I type this.
I watched this with my daughter, a few years ago. She must've been five years old. I remember telling her that the dog was sad, because his boy went away - probably to college - and this caused great gouts of emotional tears of sadness.
So, I heard this song the other day, and I couldn't recall where I'd heard it. Just that I saw some short video, with my kid, and I remember her crying about it, and me chuckling at how wonderfully sensitive my daughter was.
This is one of the best films I have seen, soooo sooo sad, I cried when I first saw it and still do. :(

This dear dog could be waiting for his loving master to return home from Iraq. A prayer for them.

I first saw this on HBO several years ago. I woke up too early, and couldn't get back to sleep, and it happened to come on. It made me cry ...
I saw it three or four times, then never again. I'm so glad you posted it!
