  • Today, at the Saturday testing of the Whelen system here in Oklahoma City, I cued your Grosse Pointe Thunderbolt to wind up with my mouse click at the exact moment National Weather Service activated our Vortex sirens. Your T-bolt wound up with the Whelens---and---it wound down at exactly the same instant the Vortex sirens wound down! I thought that was pretty neat!

  • GPW is Keeping their thunderbolt, and only upgrading the radio. A 2001 will be installed somewhere further south of this location

  • i found out that HW 2 remaining tbolts r still up cause the 2001's still need control panels and the city said they should sound in march. probably b the last time the tbolts will b tested

  • yeah but what about sever storms? wont they need to warn the people of an upcoming tornado?

  • That's why the two thunderbolts are still in service. The city never really needed three sirens to start with for it's size

  • i like that thunderbolt

  • thats cool. like to get video of this one since it would b the only 4/5 port tbolt i would hear in person. if you could, can you find out too when HW will take down the other tbolts?

  • when the siren stops, the sirens in the backround will b missed cuz all you'll hear from now on will b 2001's. hopefully this one will b up in march.

  • I was told by the owner of WSS that GPW may keep this siren and place a new one towards the south end of the city. And just upgrade the radio.

I hope they decide to keep it. Since there's nothing wrong with it.

  • @russelD9 What part of "will be upgraded with a new radio" did you miss?

  • We have one of these next to my school, the rest are 2001s, but I think I hear one I cant identify...anyways, it has a slightly slower rotation and doesnt have a screen over the horn.

  • the thunderbolt at 3:50 is set to chopper level 4, the black thunderbolt that used to be next to the water tower on malmquist ave hear in Red Wing, MN, sounded just like this, same chopper pitch, rotation speed, and it was 3/4of a mile away from my house, brings back memories, sadly, it was replaced by a shitty 2001 SRN in 2002, the City Of Red Wing, MN is not good at saving money, they always waste it, the should've left the thunderbolt in service, and replace the others, ass holes

  • I now have one of these near my house. It used to be a 1000, but now it's a 4/5 port 1000T, and sounds just like this! Except, the one near me is set a 2 RPM.

  • lol what would be deadly and funny would be if the sirin went off after the nuke destroyed all then another nuke goes off and the sirin plays th icecream song HAHAHA

  • level 5

  • why doesn't federal just produce a siren that plays a digital of the tbolt sound, wouldn't be that hard to do and would sound the same. Anyone know where I can get an attack version for my cell phone ring tone?

  • I've actually heard a 4/5 port 1003 that sounds like this it spins on 8 rpm. It's in Dallas, TX on top of the Jo-Ann Fabrics.

  • glad that im not the only one who watches these videos, why I am I fascinated by them?

  • because the sound just draws you to them :)

  • I grew up in grosse pointe. I love the grosse pointes.

  • yay its the lochmoor tbolt!! ^.^ :D

    ps ive watched this siren

  • And it's watched you....muah ha ha

  • ...and yes I have thought about them watching me too....hmmm

  • The reason why you think the rotator starts before the chopper does is that because sound is slower than light, the sound is delayed to you much more than the image of the siren that you see.

  • Or the rotation starts before the blower and chopper starts

  • Jerry's right, the sound is taking longer to get to where Eric was standing than the light is, so it appears that it starts rotating before the chopper spools up. Check out Dan's video of this exact siren but from underneath watch?v=D8nus_iz9sA.

  • yesterday i went under THAT EXACT SIREN and watched it go off (PS this tbolts still there)

  • Y'KNOW they moved that tbolt or planted trees around it cause its in another part of the course!

  • i heard that tbolt a few days ago it sounds just like that

  • That sounded cool. I liked the harmonies from the other sirens beginning around the 3:15 mark. Nice video!

  • What color is it?

  • Yellow

  • I wish I had one of those to stick out the window, when the neighbors have a fiesta every night.

Just kidding, I would never do anything like that, I'm perfect.

  • i love the echo that sounds cooooooool thanks for the vid

  • I counted the number of rotations in one minute, and I counted 5 rotations for some stupid reason.

  • Then why did you bother watching the video?

  • Man that thing sits atop a really high pole

  • Yeah, it does.

  • The 2001SRNB was actually replaced by the 2001-130.

  • I am kind of confused because when I heared a siren wind down at 05:57, it sounded like a Whelen 3016 winding down. Are there any 3016s around there that you might know?

  • That's probably the Dodge Park Whelen 3016.

  • Maybe.

  • Ahhh, ok. Thanks for clearing that up :)

  • whats the difference between an SRN, SRNB and a 130?

  • it's approx 3/4 of a mile away. but then there is one a mile south and another 1/4 mile west of that one.

  • it is located on Maxine st. & Harper Ave. and using the scale on my wall map it is just over a mile away. And I don't know what model 2001 it is.

  • the closest 2001 is at Marter and Jefferson; my apt. is about 1/4 mile away from that one.

  • It's probably set to 6 RPM.

  • Hmm, why does this one stop before the others do? Are they on a different system? I noticed that too when the thunderbolts stop sounding, the 2001's still sound.

    Just curious :)

  • They are all different cities. Grosse Pointe Woods has one siren, Harperwoods has three, and the 2001 is still far away but is in St. Clair Shores.

  • Plus there is 1 or 2 in Grosse Pointe Farms, and 1 in Grosse Pointe Shores, all are within 3 miles

  • I like this better too. Nice job Eric.

  • I retransfered the video to my computer to get rid of the glitches at the beginning and end. I also removed the "dead time" before the siren starts

  • Once again, great video, Eric! I still love the audio quality!
