    Dusty Springfield,1989

  • supurb film , supurb soundtrack and Dusty and the PSB's were a fabulous mix. RIP Dusty,

  • what a song

  • This is the definition of an epic song, people.

I could listen to this song all day & night.

  • Dusty is fantastic...If she was Welsh she would be Tom Jone's female equivalent!

Honestly though what a voice and what a woman.

  • John Profumo created 13 accounts to dislike this

  • May I recommend the book 'A Concise Guide To Eighties' Music' by Karl Vorderman. The author is a big fan of this track.

  • Oh why can't we have good old scandals such as this? Dave Cameron found with lover possibly? Mind you some of the cabinet look suspect ! It was a great thing at the time, I remember walking up Fleet st and seeing the bill boards. I love this film.

  • John Hurt is fucking sexy.

  • scandal = amazin film, amazin tune = rip dusty xxxx

  • Great great song. R.I.P Dusty

  • "Sorry about the mess. I'm guilty till I'm innocense in the Public and Press."

  • BEST SONG EVER.

  • This is so great. The movie Scandal was really well done about Profumo and Christine Keeler. I just love this video and how they cut back and forth between the movie and the real Profumo and Keeler from the 1963 news reels. This haunting song played over the opening and closing credits.

  • Whats the name of the film please?

  • @skintrade The movie is called Scandal. It's about the true story of John Profumo, high Cabinet Minister in the British Government; his affair with prostitute Christine Keeler. It happened in 1963; great story... google The Profumo Affair and read about it on Wiki.

  • @skintrade Scandal with Bridget Fonda & Joanne Whalley

  • great great song , joanne whalley in this movie is breathtakingly BEAUTIFUL a modern version of TAYLOR or LEIGH !

  • @wexfordboyful Let's not exagerate. Whalley may remind us of Joan Collins, but not Dame Elizabeth Taylor or Vivien Leigh.

  • @marcosvalenca No. She is infinitely more fuckable.

  • I've got to see this movie, I've been reading up a lot about the Profumo scandal lately

  • I'd really love to see this film. The song is fantastic.

  • Went out with a bang rather than a whimper - that's our Dusty - good on yer girl!

  • i've loved this song from the start.

  • best singer to come out of the uk. legend.

  • Dusty looks beautiful :O

  • Haunting and beautiful :)

  • GREAT SONG GREAT MOVIIE.!!!!!!!!!

  • John Hurt was robbed of an Oscar nomination for this movie.

  • It was a pity that Poulson took the fall. He was seeing the Russians on govt business which could not be divulged at the time. Non public meetings about nuclear disarmament.

It was not until the official papers were released at the PRO at Kew that cleared him of any wrong doing.

  • How one woman rocked the KGB, MI5 and the British establishment. None many about like Christine now.

  • Amazing song, such a tragic story. Poor Stephen Ward.

  • Sad story. poor Christine. GREAT song.

  • A very fine and often overlooked film. A great story brilliantly acted.

Joanne Whalley, in particular, at 3:20 - 3:25, after John Hurt turns down her affections: It's easy to see that she did like him, or something like that, and her failure here to entice him into something more emotional speaks volumes about the emotional problems plaguing her life. The look on her face.....just brilliant.

  • @calvintoronto i totally agree with you , but Stephen Ward ( John Hurt) was an osteopath he enjoyed healing people , and he did make Christine keeler,s life better , but where it all went wrong was of two things . No 1 She briefly got into drugs and had a one night stand with a Jamaican immigrant. No2 was when she told John Profumo that she will never leave Stephens flat ( coz Profumo saw the heat and insisted that she move out .) this is when it all went sour for Profumo.

  • Synthesizers and drum machines are what The Pet Shop Boys are all about - amusingly so at times. However, it worked so well, and Neil Tennant is a craftsman at writing uniquely-haunting lyrics that make your stomach flip over. Dusty Springfield's melodic sensuality is hard to replicate, she had a brilliant voice and was adored by her peers: I miss her. This is one of my favourite tunes ever. Thanks.

  • great singer

  • think Secretary of state for war/ a russian spy/ a jamaican drug dealer/ a gun toting pimp/ teenage prostitutes/ resignation of a prime minister. The only person missing was Silvio Berlusconi.

  • Appreciate posting this but I think the synthesizers and drum machines override her voice. I don't know what her voice was like at this point in her career but you can't hear her famous voice at all.

  • @iandenisjohnson I think i know what her voice was like at this point ... something called sublime..

  • I cannot put into words how much i adore this song.

  • SMOOTHER THEN SILK...

  • "it maybe false it maybe true, but nothing has been proved, ..........only when you want to. because we didnt try

  • "it maybe false it maybe true, but nothing has been proved, ..........only when you want to.

  • I saw Gandalf!! ;)

  • Christine was so wronged.

  • Oh dear lord! I thumbed this, & it made 666!

  • Christine is fab! I love 60's beauties, ever since I was hugged by 60's Doctor Who actress Wendy Padbury. She's older than my mother!

  • Goodness, Christine Keeler was a beauty in her day

  • Please Please me's number one, it's a scandal! such a scandal! great movie and great song Dusty and PSB Perfect!!

  • 03:18 - Pure magic. Great track and fantastic movie

  • these track is fuuuunnnnkkkky. my lord the beat is murderin.

  • Wow- What a song. It really conveys the story and the time in which it was set. Gives me goosebumps.

  • What Is 2:07 All About?

    Was This A Movie?

    DUSTY :( GONE RIP

  • @desert3347 it's from the movie Scandal. You just got to see it.

  • @MsKrien Thanks, I will!! Love Dusty :)

  • I'm so glad to have found other people who adore this song!

  • @raswallow yes fab

  • Government Arseholes protecting perverted senior ministers going for 17 year olds, Poor old Valerie Hobson had to live with the bald headed pervert. PROFUMO.

  • I Am Feeling Totally Stupid! Did I Miss something? Who Was Having An Affair?

Did I See Two Women In Bed Together? Wondering!!!!

  • Dusty had a quality of voice that comes around only once every 200 or 300 hundred years. RIP my dear.

  • Il caso Profumo...

  • Christean Keeler what a woman

  • he had a wonderful voice!!! RIP Dusty!!!!

  • @nippylobster That's been said by many a wise man and woman up and down the country for decades. You are in possession of a decent mind there my copper wired friend.

(Bet you fuck it up by getting trollied and chasing skirt like the rest of us though)

    :)

  • Such a brilliant ensemble of talent here, music, style, the evocation of an era - everything. John Hurt was robbed of an Oscar! Genius actor.

  • Dusty was the best singer i just loved all the stuff she did with the pet shop boys RIP DUSTY GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN......................

  • This song is so haunting, will love it till i die.

  • Secret classic.

  • Dusty = As Good As It Gets

Pet Shop Boys = As Good As It Gets

Dusty + Pet Shop Boys > As Good As It Gets

  • @LesbianVampireLover I agree you are amazing!!

  • gorgeous song, it gives me shivers. Dustys got a great voice.

  • The Profumo Affair - still remember it well - Mandy Rice - Davies, Christine Keeler, John Profumo, Stephen Ward et al - the lyrics- cleverly written. Watch the film and learn a part of history, which really did happen people, in real life!

  • Amazing video edition!

    I loved!

  • Absolutely amazing video edition!

  • Christ Dusty slays me!

  • what a stunning voice she had

  • would anybody know if anyone know if they are going to make a movie sbout the lofe and career of dusty spingfield . could please let me know a.s.a.p

  • @rocklady54 there are two movies planned about Dusty. One is supposed to star Nicole Kidman. The second one I'm not sure who will be in it. I think it's more of an independent film.

  • PSB and Dusty, what more can you asked for??? perfection at is best.

    simply awesome!!

  • Dusty sang it brilliantly ,

  • late dusty still blows us away

  • it's a pitty Dusty didn't stay around for longer. great singer, great song and a great voice.

  • great song... extremely elegant singing voice

  • Miley Cyrus and Bieber at the Brit Awards 2011? doing a duet with this song?

  • @CyrusTrueLove thats sounds awful nooo

    is it deffo lol

  • Brilliant! Dusty, you are profoundly missed! So much genius that we missed out on since you were taken too soon.....

  • A true classic, a singer without peer, Ms. Springfield kicks out on this. Thank you so very much to Neil Tennant & Chris Lowe for recognizing the legend that is Dusty Springfield. Great sax work from Courtney Pine, too! Thank you!

  • Fabulous then and it still is now.....

  • Não acredito que a Miley Cyrus e Justin Bieber vão cantar essa música no Brit Awards 2011.. Afff....

  • Anyone fascinated by this song and in turn the film or the Profumo Scandal should check out, if they haven't already, Anthony Frewin's novel London Blues. Amazing

  • Great song and from a great film too.

  • At 2:57 is that John Hurt in drag as a purse-lipped granny? Wot?

  • @Shtove

it's Jean Alexander ( Hilda Ogden from Coronation Street ) playing Christine Keeler's Mother.

  • A mesmerising performance by the fabulous Dusty Springfield. Anyone who doesn't understand the term "star quality" should watch this vid. Ms Springfield has "star quality" and then some. Incidentally, Mandy Rice-Davis at 0:54 ! She looks like big, big trouble. Though, I bet she matured into a really nice woman.

  • lyrically, it's very cerebral for a pop song. My hats off to PSB for being able to tell the story and put it to music.

A friend of mine, who knew nothing about the Profumo Affair but has the song on CD said to me "that song makes me so sad when I hear it. It's haunting."

and it IS haunting...the atmospheric production, those eerie lyrics (the funeral's very quiet, because all his friends have fled") and most of all, the lovely, haunting voice of Dusty Springfield.

  • @mnmcv1 Not all the Pop Songs are stupids like the shits of today.....

  • I have to agree with everybody here, an absolute gem of a track. Totally adore this.

  • This is without a doubt a classic, and with the the input of the pet shop boys will always remain so, we miss you Ms O'Brien.

  • listen to the depth the soul wow who sings that way now

  • @sarahbisme1 Emma Bunton?

  • The best eye make-up in the business. Whew!

  • Love this song it reminds me of a time when real songs could make it in the chart

  • The PSBs should do more soundtracks.

  • If you don't like Dusty, don't listen to her! I believe that the ultra gaga lady is waiting for your cash...

If you DO like Dusty - congratulations on having an excellent ear for music and an appreciation of one of the finest artistes that England has ever produced.

  • This song is great, Dusty Springfield and the Pet Shop Boys, wow! Movie was great too!!!!

  • Im 19 and i love this. I hate todays music, its so bland and wishey washey.

  • This song has the perfect tone for the story - Dusty has a perfect delivery, actors are intriguing. Well, I'll have to see the film! Nicely put together, whoever did this montage.

  • Pure quality!

  • Twinskyh - thumbs down.

    lasktguy - thumbs up.

  • Comment removed

  • Twinskyh, what??!! This song is beautiful. You're nuts.

  • @lasktguy I'm sorry, but I more preffer her older songs.

  • Twinskyh, I love her older ones also but this is still a beautiful song. Great smooth feeling and then at the end when she does her patented big notes it's just amazing.

  • @Twinskyh You can drown in a lake you bad taste waste of space

  • @starlight76able Please try to behave yourself. Everybody had an opinion. Respect that.

  • Twinskyh, just ignore her. If someone thinks this song is bad they're the ones who have no taste.

  • @starlight76able lmao some people just dont have good taste. Some people have tacky houses and some people have nice houses. Its all about differant tastes. Some people like crap food, some people like good food. Id say i have good taste :) especially with music. Good song !

  • Love her voice and music is tight but dont care much for the look...looks like a tranny.

  • All over the map today.

  • What a great singer she was. AND, much too pretty to have make-up trowelled on her like this (but then.....this WAS the 80's) We miss you, Dusty.

  • A song tailor made for Dusty - and the video displays her perfectly. A perfect blend of voice, lyrics and drama. You can tell she really enjoyed this one. Her best video performance.

  • i agree, but i think the instrimental side with courtney pine on sax is really awsome!!

  • CHOON!!!

  • Dusty fans - gotta get this -reelinintheyears(dot)com/britishinvasion

  • im 19 and i love this. My mum has it on a cd. I hate the majority of todays music.

  • useless trivia:

Please Please Me was number 1 for 30 weeks (so says Wikipedia). ;)

  • Musical dexterity by the Pet Shop Boys and the lyrical genius of Dusty Springfield .Absolutely marvellous and timeless.

  • Beautiful, haunting track. I am not really a Pet Shop Boys fan but this was a stroke of genius by Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe (and Dusty, of course). I was 13 during the Profumo scandal in 1963 and it seems like yesterday! It was one of the first great political scandals of the modern era and nothing in Britain was the same afterwards. Thanks for posting.

  • I agree--very beautiful song. This is one of their many (undeservedly) forgotten gems. They haven't been big in the U.S. for some time, and it bugs me that so many people here only remember them for West End Girls. Intelligent, thoughtful lyrics, lush orchestral melodies--only a couple of reasons why I have been a devotee for so long.

  • Sums Britains up full stop, full of fucking upper class ponces on bribes and taxpayers dosh, blow the cunts up.

  • @k80nya

Nah largely meritocracy today; your point is taken though. Cheer up fella!!!

  • Poor Stephen Ward. He was just a scapegoat. A true scandal!

  • @karlvorderman Poor Stephen Ward my arse! He was a self centered pimp. The only person who came well out of this whole thing long term was John Profumo who rehabilitated himself and devoted his life to charity work

  • "It's a scandal...such a scandal."

    Gotta love Neil Tennant. ^^

  • Nice club sound to this music video where music videos in cinemas during the 80s was new trend when one day slowly disappeared. I still havent seen Scandal 1989 maybe it will suffice on bluray in the UK or DVD when the studio can pull its finger out.

Dustys voice has nice silkiness tone and the saxophone slowly fading away at the end as its telling the story of the Profumo Affair scandal long before my time.

A few nice backing voices by The Pet Shop Boys also on the track.

  • i envy the people who chilled out with her...

  • dusty springfield to me is one of the best singer in thia lifetime and beyond

  • So how gorgeous this song can be? The Pet Shop Boys are great music-crafting guys and Dusty's soothing voice really adds up a lot to that. A masterpiece of the eighties to play loud over and overr...

  • my girl , Dusty

  • What is that at 2:58 - looks like John Hurt dressed up as his old mother?!

  • oi, thats hilda ogden matey, you dont want to get on the wrong side of her, she'll ave ya guts for garters...

  • That was Mandy's Mother, reading about her daughters exploits in the Big City.

Do see the Movie. It is excellent in every way and it is very close to the true story. John Hurt-One of the best actors that ever lived.

  • @grover12able It was Christine's Mother wasn't it?

  • RAGINGPEARL- I don't know how to use this and I don't see your name here.

Well, there were only two girls, so if it wasn't Mandy then i guess it had to be Christine. The point I was trying to make was that it wasn't Steven Ward in drag as some other poster suggested.

  • Love this! The best later song of Dusty's career by far! Memories of 1989,i don't know lol.Funny though in the video clip for this between 4.05 and 4.08,the policeman in the backround on the left hand side, behind keeler looks like Jerermy Clarkson of the BBC Top Gear programme.Never noticed this before, its the spit of him! Funny! Anyway nice post!! Benja :-)

  • @Mulsanne917andkink

the DVD is released in the UK on 5th of April 2010

No news on whether there will be a Blu-Ray :(

  • Is that so and about time! I hope its in original six-track Dolby stereo as true to the 70mm!

  • Comment removed

  • There were rumours that never entirely went away that the trail of johns went to some pretty lofty heights of English society-Prince Phillip to name just one...

  • lol @ Mandy Rice Davis "Well he would say that, wouldn't he ! ".
