Can anybody ID the snares? The big boy up top is a Sonor snare, perhaps a Horst Link Ferromanganese (hilarious name, I know). The one on the left looks almost like it has ludwig lugs, but most of their snare shells are beaded, so I'm not sure what it is. I'm not sure what else he has. The resolution is pretty poor.
@lovo356 I believe it was done that way to really capture the cymbals and the drums serperately so that everything together would blend nicely. I've never recorded like this personally but it seems like an interesting idea and from how Mew's ATGHK's sounds, one that works well in their case!
His style is somewhat reminiscent of John Bonham, which can only ever be a good thing. That beat from 3:30 - 3:55 is awesomely fat. Great stuff from Silas.
I really don't know much of anything about drumming, so it's an instrument I frequently take for granted when I listen to music...except with Mew. Silas' rhythms are so unusual and infectious all at once.
I wonder what songs Michael's referring to when he mentions "Dino(??)" and "the hit song". And I like Bo's "bee-yootiful" at the beginning. Haha...
There's a CD for sale on Ebay- that's some sort of early Kites Demo. A nasty money-grabber has put it up for £200, and it's been up again and again for ages, apparently, but on that CD the tracks include some familiar Kites tracks, but also, "Dino," and, "Lost a friend." It's said that Mew warned fans not to waste money on it. Fascinating.
Yeah, I was actually one of the forumers who chipped into the pool to buy it and inadvertently caused the seller to jack up the price. I really hope some poor sucker doesn't bid on it for that ridiculous price.
Oh, I think "Dino" = WAYLG, and "Lost a friend" = Seething Rain.
Silas is amazing!

1:12-1:45 Apocalypso
2:55- 3:21 Why Are You Looking Grave
Two of their best songs! I had no clue he records drums and cymbals separately.
