"What's the show that lets you run wild through a supermarket? (SUPERMARKET SWEEP!) What's the show where you can grab everything you can get your hands on? (SUPERMARKET SWEEP!) And what's the show that hides $5,000 and then helps you find it? (SUPERMARKET SWEEP!!) Well, we've just hidden another $5,000, so come and get it!"
Every time I hear this, I think of people throwing canned hams into shopping carts...and I'm subsequently reminded of an old David Letterman quote: "You'll come for the entertainment, but you'll stay for the canned ham giveaway."
Who's Got The Hefty Trash Bags? Ok, You're On! Who's Got The Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice? Ok, You're On And Who's Got The Double Stuf Oreos? Ok, And You're On! It's Supermarket Sweep And Now Here's Our Host, David Ruprecht!
this is no ordinary supermarket this is the only market that offers 5000 in cash to find the store all u need to do is go to supermarket sweep whos got the little debbie honeybuns okay your on whos got the pampers diapers okay your on and whos got the pringles chips okay and your on and here your host david ruprechett
In my opinion, this had to have been the most innovative show of its time. I would have never expected this when it first came on.....a show where you could shop and win cash from it. That was so damn creative to me....
Supermarket Sweep on GSN this Nov. with a new host? That's wonderful news. I loved it, but I was getting tired of the older format with (yuch!) animal sounds and a Scrabble-esque speed round before the big sweep. The intro even resembled The Price Is Right, until it was finally changed in the last few years to show contestants just running to their seats. Whoever hosts the new Sweep, I hope it's not Pat Thin. I lothed his laugh on Shop Til You Drop & The New Joker's Wild (1990).
I was always impressed with how perfect all the aisles looked on the show. I also found it funny that they would give you a penalty if you left something on the floor
@jobim810 Good call! That is Dave Koz. I've known him since he was 17 and I hired him to play on the SS Theme (which I wrote and produced). He was just starting to become well known with his solo career at the time.
Actually, there are more episodes that can be seen than just the 7 that only still exist. You can view them at the Museum of Broadcast Communications in Chicago.
LOVE LOVE this theme! It's funny--when Supermarket Sweep was at its peak in the late 90s I was just getting into my teens and at that time I wasn't a big game show fan like I am now (and thus don't remember "Sweep" as much as I do Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy!, etc.). This, for me, though has got to be in the top 5 of best game show themes of all time and I think it's so underrated! It sounds like it could have been composed by Kenny G--LOL!
This show was one of the best and a instant classic. How could you not love this show? Its among my top favorites with Price is Right, Russian Roulette, and Wheel of Fortune.
Looking back to 2003, according to David Ruprecht, the real reason for the demise of "Supermarket Sweep" was because there was a problem between their producer and PAX TV (now Ion Television). The ratings remained extremely strong right up to the end, usually outperforming even the prime time shows on PAX.
Randy West said they prolly would've considered moving over to GSN when it was cancelled in 2004, but this was when they were going through their "expansion" phase, so they were more interested in non-GS programming.
Damn, major amounts of memories. This was totally my fave show, lol. Wish it was on in reruns, or even a new version. (But with this theme of course, lol)
when i was akid growing up watching this my mom bought me one of those carts and would have the food like hidden around the house and outside and we would play supermarket sweep...lol great times man
I love this Show because its my favorite of all time and the music all the Game show i like please respond my answer Thanks again Email me at anytime any day and week or any weekend
When you're at the checkout counter and you hear the beep. beep beep. Just think of all the fun you can have on Supermarket Sweep!! My favorite episode was when they gave away two geo tractors to the team the scores the highest total in the sweep. Round Robin a fun game, guessing an item in the market, running wild through the aisles and two really good announcers in Johnny Gilbert and Randy West. David Ruprecht for Supermarket sweep is a terrific host for the game show.
i was thinking of having this version of supermarket sweep as a kids show but it will have some differences if i get more than 20 good comments then, i will describe what the show is? whos hosting it? how it will be showed? what is from the old SMS? what company will be producing it? how much money they will be looking for?
i love this theme so much it makes me happy and i used to love watching it it come at 5 where i'm from on pax used to love it so much like someone said earlier i think a revisal is due on food network
This is a very nice theme song I see here. It reflects the atmosphere of the show and the game as well. Since it was cable television and wasan't serious t's nice to have a theme song. A little bat from then & now makes the theme a star. It's memorable & well remeber it for the days to come. It's a 5 star theme and deserves to be listened to every now and then; even to non game show fans. The only thing missing is the familiar BEEP; not a problem here!!!!
I wish "Supermarket Sweep" was still in production. Five years ago, David Ruprecht organized an index page as an effort for fans to save the show that unfortunately did not succeed. He should have kept it posted on his website. The only hope the program can return to the airwaves is only if Al Howard can negotiate a deal with another network. It would go great with the Food Network.
"Sweep" first aired in the 90s on Lifetime, then it was moved to PAX later on (now ION) until its 2002 cancellation. By the way, this song sounds really 80's for being 1994. Are you sure this was composed in 1994?
This composition was the first incarnation of SMS, back in 1990. Yes it does have an 80s like sound to it, but back in the ealry to mid 90s a lot of music stil had that 80s style to it. I'd say that 80s sound lasted up til 96.
Um, actually this was the second version of "Supermarket Sweep" to air. The first version aired on ABC from 1965 to 1967 and was produced by Talent Associates, the same company that produced "Get Smart" and "McMillan & Wife."
Wow! I used to watch the 90s "Sweep" every night until its cancellation in '02. I never knew ABC actually aired this show at all, but for some strange reason, I can picture "Sweep" making a return to ABC. They just need to find the right host, find the right studio, and air it in DAYTIME. This is probably why Pax (now ion) canceled the show. No one wants to watch shopping game shows anymore, unfortunately. "Shop Til You Drop" was canceled as well; it aired at 6:30 on Pax.
Actually, the ABC version DID air in daytime. In fact, for much of its run, it was used as the lead-in program for ABC's morning schedule. All other programs that aired before it were either local or syndicated programming.
SuperMarket Sweep was oringaly on Lifetime during the first running then it moved to a new network when it came back for 3 years. I never seen the newer shows but, I love that show when it was on.
Me too i used to watch it when i was a baby then i cried when it went off the air i used to wake my sleeping grampa up and show it when it came on and my Grandma missed C.O.P.S. for this but a few years later i might start a T.V. Station and i will run this show.
I remember the intro going something like this:
"What's the show that lets you run wild through a supermarket? (SUPERMARKET SWEEP!) What's the show where you can grab everything you can get your hands on? (SUPERMARKET SWEEP!) And what's the show that hides $5,000 and then helps you find it? (SUPERMARKET SWEEP!!) Well, we've just hidden another $5,000, so come and get it!"
