  • Ok I am sure that this is the problem but do I have to weld it? I dont have a welder.

  • @Mauser2012 You might be able to use clamps.

  • cant weld for shyt

  • @mateopinero Please show me some of your flux wire jobs.

  • i normally use that Lucas upper cylinder and injector cleaner. Is that any good ?

  • @MrRaiders6769 I have never used it so do not know.

  • Wow !! You weld also. Your the complete package Rich !!!! I noticed a black film on the edge of my tail pipe that is easy to wipe off. It is the same film that was on the inside of my egr valve and around the gap part of my spark plugs. Any idea why I get that kind of burn off ? Thanks Rich

  • @MrRaiders6769 Could be dirty injectors i would put some injector clean in it can't hurt .

  • @richpin06 Thanks for getting back to me. I just realized the bolts are double ends with a nut screwed on. I thought that nut was the bolt head. How is it possible to remove a bolt without a head? could the nut act as the head since it's rusted on?

  • @fargobrad Yes i bet it could.

  • @richpin06

I just had a couple questions on removing rusty exhaust bolts.

In your opinion would mapp gas be hot enough to remove the bolts? I could also rent a oxy/acetylene torch if needed. I was going to use an electric impact wrench from harbor freight once the area is red. The off chance the bolt was still stuck could I just drill it out and tap the hole one bolt size bigger?

Thank you for your help I really appreciate it

    Brad

  • @fargobrad I use oxy/acetylene with great success. If it is stuck drill it the tap size for the bolt if that does not work then you can try the oversize.

  • @richpin06 thats ok things happen. I was going to install a flex pipe like in your video in my friends 2003 hyundai accent, but it turns out the part guy told me the pipe on the car is 1 7/8 in and they don't make flex pipe 1 7/8 in. So I'm gonna have to replace the whole pipe.

  • Rich I have the same problem on my friends 2003 hyundai accent. The pipe going out to the muffler is like 5 1/3 in. I'm guessing the pipe to the exhaust manifold would be the same, its hard to measure because theres some kind of shield welded on it.

For 5 1/3 in. how much of and overlap would I need for a proper fit?

I love watching all your videos hopefully you can help me

This is for my friends car she is a single mom with very little money

  • @fargobrad Sorry i did not get back to you sooner i just got back my internet from the recent Halloween snowstorm can i still help you.

  • I can't see how you could have possibly welded that pipe 360 degrees around. There just isn't any clearance.

  • Richpin, I have said many times, and I even refer friends and family to you now; I would never have the courage to be my own mechanic if I hadn't watched you do things first. You have an entire Saturn community learning from you. It's extremely generous of you to share your time by recording all the work you do for us to watch. I speak for many when I say, I really appreciate it.

  • @ThreeDaysOfDale Thank you for the kind words.

  • @ThreeDaysOfDale Thank you

  • have you had any problems with the front pipe cracking without that front bracket attached?

  • @gyartz No i haven't so far so good.

  • @gyartz sometimes i think that front clamp causes the pipe to crack. mine did & my car's in excellent condition with 50.000 miles on it. it cracked right next to that band...

  • i noticed the front bracket that ataches to the original pipe is not being used in the video. did you re-volt it up later? it doesn't seem to line up anymore also...

  • @gyartz The front mount was burned away before i got to it.

  • Thank you for the vid. For lack of those tools and skills I can't do the work myself, but now I know what's involved and can shop my local independent shops for the work.

  • what type of welding is that, is it mig?

  • @rickii2010 Yes it is a mig Clarke 130EN

  • Always interesting to watch your videos !

Was this flux core welding of did you use gas welding ? What type of gas and wire or flux core wire would you recommend to use for a durable weld on a flex pipe like this ?

  • @Dicofole I just switched over from the flux core wire to a solid Hobart .030 wire and Argon/co2 gas what a difference in welding.Smooth clean weld with at lease twice the width.

  • Can a bad rusted out flex pipe with holes cause my check engine ligth to come on Po420 code on my Mazda Mpv Lx

  • @hp11208 Yes it can

  • Hey rich what u think about the H-F Tools 90 amp flux wire welder

  • @hp11208 I think you can get by with it for exhaust work.I just bought a Clarke 130EN used it for a month with flux wire but now it is set up with gas which the H-F one can not, very happy so far.

  • Why replace with a flex pipe again, can't you just use a simple straight pipe ?

Flex pipes seem to always go bad a real pain!

  • @Dicofole The engine flexs back and forth so that is why you have to use a flex pipe.

  • Those welds don't look good.

  • @trm64..good job. Napa! I got the one entire piece flex/cat at AZone but glad to see Napa has a flex pipe bolt on for future repairs if needed. This is a great vid for welders, 2.

  • I just have a couple questions for anyone as well. I need a new exhaust flex pipe on my 1999 cavalier. I was just wondering what the consequences of not fixing it as soon as possible would be. I hear a rattling noise at certain RPM's. Is this the flex pipe doing this?

Also, what would be a fair price at any local mechanic to have the whole install done including parts and labor?

Thanks to anyone who can answer these for me.

  • @Skatemike420 If you hear a rattling sound you might have something loose that might be a easy fix and not a replacement of the whole exhaust.

  • @Skatemike420 cats make a rattling noise when they come apart too. get under it and bang on it. THE CAT GETS VERY HOT SO DO THIS WHEN THE CAR IS COLD

  • good video!

  • quick question for anybody, really. what would be the rough cost of welding equipment like this? thats including everything id need....

  • @pepene93 I just bought this Clarke 130EN from summit racing for $249.including everything you need

  • @richpin06a wow, thats cheaper than i expected. thanks.

  • @pepene93 I just checked summit racing website and i do not see a listing for the Clarke 130EN anymore i guess it was a better price than i though.

  • @richpin06a theres one for $289. thats only slightly more expensive

  • @pepene93 With shipping mine cost me $262. to the door if you can get it shipped for $289 that would be pretty good.

  • what type of welder do you use?

    Good vid thanks

  • @gst69man Clarke WE6523 130EN 120-Volt Fluxcore/MIG Welder

  • good job thanks

  • i need you help richpin06a i need new engine to honda accord 1987 in california what place you recomend to buy or important points need know thanks

  • @macuazito This the place i go for parts car-part.com/

  • I just checked NAPA...the pipe is $179. The universal flex pipes range between $20 and $35. Just info for comparison.

  • I bought a new flex pipe from NAPA that was a direct bolt in replacement between the header flange and the catalytic converter. I don't recall the price, but my old one was shot. It was quicker and easier than patching the old pipe, albeit a bit more expensive I'm sure.

As far as welding in a patch, I think it would be easier to tack in the new flex pipe and then drop the whole pipe in order to facilitate easier welding. I may try this on the next repair.

  • A 60 dollar welding helmet saves soooo much trouble. i hate those damn masks.

  • is there a reason to do this? will it hurt if i do not?

  • @campauchicken Do you mean putting in a flex pipe as opposed to a solid one

  • @richpin06a No i know why you need a flex pipe, but what if i just leave the bad flex pipe on? will it hurt the car at all?

  • @richpin06..so, u saying east of dc/md/va..there's an emission difference & car was built with a ? I bought my car in NY. walker exhaust & saturn scheme lists all # & parts for the entire exhaust system. I SEE FLEXPIPE/resonator. hmm? Told autozone dummies, there is a directfit/bolt on, flex pipe/cat combo for 98sl2dohc. $249 - shocked them. SummitRacing($197 shipped) & others carry or can order! $26 for a directfit, nobolt flexpipe! great = weld

  • How do you know it needs to be replaced?

  • @rax2099 The exhaust sound was louder than normal and when i got underneath i could feel and hear exhaust coming out from the flex pipe.

  • cool,thanks

  • @amaple312 That will be one of the next things i buy.

  • The factory cat is worth keeping. I would have tacked it and then dropped the pipe to weld it...yeah you need gaskets and hardware afterwards but a lot more easy to weld on the bench.

  • For the price of buying an ($96) oem flex pipefrom advance plus couplings and sawing..I just picked up a direct fit flex pipe with the cat attached. new flanges and bolted it right back up..total $198 after $20 autozone reward pts + $20 pricematch to Summit. (warrenty included). My 10 yr old sl2 had rusted the O2 sensor hole, 2. Sometimes, I dont mind paying for bolt on plus discounted parts and little energy.

  • @ballershanelle It is next to imposable to find a direct fit front pipe with cat for a decent price for my 98 SL2 because of the northeast emission package which has a precat build into the exhaust manifold.

  • Why not just use a regular piece of pipe? There is an exhaust leak on the 99 SW2 we have, its had it for years but never have gotten around to fixing it. I'd assume its the flex pipe, is this a common issue? BTW, this is a Florida car.

  • @studpuppy69 Transverse mount engines rock in a forward to backward motion so there has to be a little give in the pipe at the engine.

  • Good vid. I would've done it a little differently. I would have disconnected the front pipe and lowered the entire section to weld the top part of the pipe.

  • @CoolasIce2 I was thinking the same thing right to the point were i though what if the manifold studs brake off then i have to remove the A/C compressor and manifold to fix it.

  • rich, what kind of welder is that and is it only for these types of welding only or other welds also

  • @hp11208 I am using a Clarke WE6523 130EN 120-Volt Fluxcore/MIG Welder anything you can think of you can weld with it.

  • Thanks great vid. Why did the job save $170 - was the original setup a solid pipe of some sort?

  • @t6vim12 A new front pipe with cat is over $200. and the flex pipe was only $29. so we saved a little.

  • nice

  • What kind of welder are you using?

  • @turbobuick33 Clarke WE6523 130EN just bought from summitracing for $249. very happy so far.

  • your saw makes light work of exhausts
