  • Ani Difranco in my opinion is one of the BEST most INFORMATIVE role models in today's society. Thank you Ani for being you!

  • this guy sucks at interviewing

  • god shes beautiful

  • propaganda, no solutions.

  • david camerooon outta interview nadal ,after his wimbledon sucess.:) not before

  • she says "you know" so many times, you know!?

  • "..the disillusionment with dic-, democracy comes from..." LOL 6:03

  • Wow, Ani, you look pretty normal these days. Still love you! <3

  • i find the tiffs that go on in random comment sections interesting. go to ANY random vid; theres a senseless fight happening in the comments section. people are quick to be rightous, especially when their identity is concealed! behind these stoic social facades, are we all attached to our cultural dogmas? do we really hate and dismiss anyone who disagrees with our opinions? do we come here to vent cuz it safer than speaking our minds in real life? are people actually like this in real life? hmmm

  • i'm listening to as is softly and then this interview.. it's a beautiful combo :)

  • Boy, did events ever bear her out! Now, in 2011, see the wreckage left by Patriarchy, its greed and violence, its self-aggrandizement. Too late for those old boys; not too late for us.

  • @sephiroth97 Wow! It is comments like this that help create a well-educated, co-operative society for our world. Thank you! Very intellectual of you; this comment speaks numbers as to your musical and constructive input.

  • @selsel1986

    Your welcome!

Now you can go back to listening to bad music.

  • @sephiroth97

I have to say that your response to my comment is actually very much appreciated! I may listen to "bad music" (i.e. Ani Difranco) according to you, which is A-ok! We all have differences of opinion with regards to music, art, food, the list goes on. Completely depreciating these different tastes with a "fuck it" attitude is what I think is unfortunate and creates overall small-mindedness. Nonetheless, cheers! Back to my "bad music" :)

  • @selsel1986 u r awesome

  • she's not even wearing makeup and she still looks so pretty on cam

  • god shes so effing amazing! she inspires me to be more "real" I think she encapulates the word really.

  • i dont think, well i hope when she said "wet back" it wasnt the stereotype of mexicans. she might have or i hope have literally meant she was sweating with a wet back.

  • jesus, she's briliant. haha definately a good role model

  • Canon is not a greatest hits, it's a compliation where Ani wanted to show her musical progression.

  • Im lost i thought she was a lesbian

    Some one help

    is she bisexual?

  • @Nowatermelons Why would you care...? Would it make a difference to you enjoying her music..? :)

  • @RebeckaRowan Im in LOVE with her music :D im just confused :(

  • Well said at 5:37-6:20 and 6:30-6:50 and her Prophet self said again

"Watch them slip the white guy in at the last Minute" And they SURE DID. Hid name is Vice President Joe Bidden.

  • Well said at 5:37-6:20 and 6:30-6:50 and her Prophet self said again

"Watch them slip the white guy in at the last Minute" And they SURE DID. Hid name is Vice President Joe Bidden.

  • AS far as the problem w/ the dollar goes, it started WAY B4 Reagan & Bush: it began w/ the sneaking in of the unconstitutional, UNFEDERAL, Federal Reserve. END THE FED! And read the book, The Creature From Jekyll Island by G Edward Griffin. As well as END THE FED by Ron Paul. Ani, you could do sooo much to help by supporting RON PAUL! Get outta the False Left/Right paradigm & go DEEPER than Dem Vs Rep. Obama hasn't ended the War or helped at all... it's b/c he works 4 the SAME crooks Bush did.

  • @lizzabbott Ani openly supported the green party a while back.

  • Love her T-shirt,maches the hair!Anyone knows which brand is this Long sleeve?

  • She looks an awful lot like Angelina Jolie

  • maybe people are not understanding about this "wetback" comment. upon listening to her for over 10 years, and just understanding the viewpoint that she's coming from, she is speaking from the perspective of the so-called "white middle-class american", who supposedly coin these terms... c'mon people. it's not hard to see. are we that ADD that we have such a hard time truly listening and interpreting a human being for who they really are? she is a beautiful person, one of the rarest.

  • I agree.

But I still think she should have refrained from saying it.

Just because I like her and she speaks about social justice doesn't mean she gets a pass to say shit like that.

  • 06:05

    "disillusionment with dick...democracy comes from"

    FREUDIAN SLIP lolol

moment later "the states at this point. I long .... I constantly ...."

lol I love finding women's thoughts in their misplaced words

  • @LLCoolPass By women, I assume you mean people...? Cause you know this isn't a gender specific thing! :D

  • @LLCoolPass

She meant to say dick democracy. She has said the phrase many times before in interviews.

  • Forgive me for sharing the fact that I am not a fan of George Stroumboulopoulos, yet one must be able to overlook such petty differences and to fully enjoy the material that is being shared. Ani diFranco is our modern Thomas Jefferson and our present day Hypatia of Alexandria. There is a universe of a difference between what the music business machine churns out and of wondrous artists; as like Ani, have been able to create and share. Her music continues to make the masses dance and think.

  • Captain Private,

I saw the video of you attempting to play guitar. I prefer that people be musicians first, and assholes second. Keep working, one day you might play as well as Ani does.

    Good Luck.

  • @DerangedRanger1 I DOUGHT IT.

  • The US is a republic not a democracy. As such we have much more protection and freedom of artistic expression.

  • I think ani difranco has amazing and different music.I love it

  • we have the same name:)

  • Great Clip.....ESPECIALLY for her "Politics"!! She is very intelligent. Indeed.....

  • beautiful. i love ani. dilate plays in my head alll the time

  • I thought she was lesbian?

  • just bi.

  • I love her politics, that is one of the reasons that I ended up really liking her songs!

  • I lover her music, but hate her politics. She's the girl version of Billy Bragg whom I, incidentally, also admire as a musician.

  • I love her so much. She is so intelligent and powerful..not to mention beautiful..

  • what was with that wetback comment?

  • I think it was a reference toward American attitudes toward people from less fortunate countries (Mexico and all of Latin America) and how Americans have become impoverished in comparison with Europeans and Canadians. I thought it was biting social commentary on the collective attitude of Americans and their sense of superiority toward other countries, and not recognizing how impoverished they've become. *shrug* MHO.

  • I agree! he totally leads in a grossly obvious way..uggh!

  • I think she writes some of the best, most powerful poetry. One of the lines in a song of her goes, "Uncle Sam is rigging cock-fights in the Promised Land" There are many other lines which I can't recall offhand. She is terrific.

  • One of the lines in my songs go "Iankyoko is a fucking retard". There are so many lines about how stupid you are though, I can't recall.

  • You've got a bad case of the gripe.

  • Vapid?? Far from, in my opinion!

  • she is far bigger then these questions, and unable to respond in this scope. She is an Eclipse - we can't get there, but we are fortunate that she can show us some.

  • haha she will never be a brittny! Ms. DiFranco actually has brains.

  • @nosecualquiernombre - Not to mention that Britany is also a Bush fan.

  • @nosecualquiernombre As a fan of both Spears and DiFranco I find it hard to say that. I think every artist is unique and genuine. And on top of that Spears and both DiFranco are very different artists that can't be compared due to differences in genre.

  • who cares about her sexuality? listen to the music. otherwise she'll turn into another brittny spears prying into her personal life.

  • Hope no one took the wetback comment wrong!

  • @myheadphones2 - Maybe she meant "greenback". That is what Canadians call the US shitty dollar.

  • She is great!!! I love her music. And I think she's bisexual.

  • She has a husband and a kid, so I'm thinking she's not a lesbian.

  • she never married the father of her baby and they are now broken up - she's always been unabasedly bi-sexual

  • unabashedly...???

  • whoa whoa whoa. When did they break up?

  • i thought Ani was a lesbian?....

  • a lesbian? i would say that i, myself, am a "lesbian", but then i would be constructing borders that only constrict and try to define what you cannot define... haven't you been listening? or only making assumptions?

  • assumptions are the mother of all fuk ups. i only asked a a question

  • Interesting--what does does it mean?

  • Kind of like feminism

  • Someone should do an edit combining all the silly gestures/sounds DiFranco makes in this interview.

  • George directed the conversation to a political space.

She made her name, and built her career singing about the problems and issues in the World.

She spoke about her new album, it's a greatest hits complitation... what more is there to say about it?

  • Comment removed

  • What are you nuts?!!? She's hot!

Why don't you take other things into consideration besides strict geometry?

  • This is a great interview... And the interview is about Ani, and that's great... Why did she need to talk about politics. We knew her politics. I loved hearing about her. There was enough going on with politics. She talked a little politics. I was overjoyed to hear her talk about SOMETHING else!...

  • Great interview!

  • Wow. She's a lot different than I imagined her to be from only listening to her music. She seems so nice and humble and cheerful. Her music is so raw.

  • Ani DiFranco can do no wrong! she is a godess, Ani i love you

  • lmao ok so perhaps "wetback" was not the politically correct way to go. Needless to say I think what she said in this interview was "REAL" something that is hard to find in todays world. I love Ani to death. Listen to her lyrics and I think everyone can find something they can relate too.

  • could someone kindly explain

one republic for which it stands

    term

  • haha love it ani. said perfectly.

  • Time for my two cents...for what it's worth.

I remember one thing a co-worker of mine said to me at work that I didn't really consider until now.

"Conservatives just like liberals are the same, they go too far. One thing I ask is not to judge."

  • I think you misunderstand...

Mine wasn't meant to be a complement to Ani.

And why would I want to check out your page?

    ...ok?

  • When you love a musician, never watch their interviews. She's so hippy self-absorbed.

  • What I don't understand is that this is supposed to be an interview about her new album, and instead it turned into a discussion about her particular political viewpoints and a bashing of those viewpoints opposing hers...

  • i guess you missed EVERYthing else she said.

    too bad.

she covered a FEW other topics than politics!!

  • no, i didn't miss the other stuff, actually. thanks though. a pretty good chunk of it WAS about politics, however, and i watched this to hear about her album. because (incase you missed it) the description says, "talks about her newest album, Canon." thanks for jumping to conclusions though. that was nice of you.

  • Watching the interview, past halfway, she has yet to mention a single political stance. So far it's about her career & baby. Canon was a greatest hits album discussing her past career IS discussing the material on the album.

As for talking politics, check the date, it's during the ramp up towards '08 election. A pretty relevant topic to be discussing at the time, Ani's been political for most of her career. To watch an interview with her where politics isn't covered a little would be odd.

  • i know. and you have a point about it being during the election, which i didn't notice before, so thanks for pointing it out. but still, she didn't talk about politics within her MUSIC, she talked about politics in general. her choice candidates, etc. so really, if half the interview is focusing on that when she is a musician and not a politician, i found it a bit disappointing.

  • also, i never mentioned anything about her talking about her past career. her music CAREER in general was exactly what i wanted to hear about, and i am aware that canon is a greatest hits album.

  • You guys are crazy. I almost think that she is SO anti-racist that she didn't even think twice about saying it....because she doesn't think of wetback in a derogatory way like you all do.

  • Ani Rocks

  • I cannot believe that Ani DiFranco would use such a derogatory word like, "wetback." My heart nearly skipped a beat when I heard her say that hurtful word! I can't help but say that a lot of the magic that I felt when listening to her music has been lost ever since I listened to this.

  • I totally agree- the interview was decent and then she just dropped that long a bomb but a silent bomb that she didn't even seem to notice she dropped. It really forced me to think twice and farther into someone I considered one of my icons. Thanks for posting this comment- I very probably wouldn't of listened to this whole interview if you hadn't mentioned your concern.

  • Relax! I don't think it was meant like that. I am a Hispanic woman that has had a few derogatory slang things said around me. I think she was just saying that she felt foreign in that land. I know that this woman is not a bigot , and we all need to ease up on the PC thing. I am so tired of the paranoia..

  • @heartluc Exactly. :)

  • if she were one of your "icons", you would have listened to the whole thing anyway...get a grip!

  • I really wanted to argue with you- but I can't.

    Touche.

I guess I better statement would of been 'used to be one of my icons'- now I suppose I find most of her (and most singer/songwriters) interviews relatively boring.

  • My wife is Latino and I don't think what Ani said was anything really racy. I am a Jew and have gone through a share of bigotry and this does not offend me one bit. Chill out, Ani is not a racist.

  • There's a difference between calling someone a wetback and saying that you, personally, feel like one. It's a corollary of the "Are we children of a lesser god?" sentiment, in the case of the latter. Get over yourself. She was tactless but I seriously doubt a hardcore left-wing biracial bisexual female singer-songwriter can get away with being racist. She would alienate her bra-burning hippie-loving flag-torching commie friends. (Wait, that didn't come out right.) :)

  • But sadly you still made a good point (in a rude way) :D

  • O, wait..you're not the interviewer...

    Lets see.

Annoying is good.. lets see how good you can be.

  • i dont know why i dont like her, her music is good, but she's annoying for some reason

  • I feel ya, Shes cool but there is something tweaking about her vibe. NP wish her well...

  • it seems like she's really full of herself, but i can't tell

  • I dunno...but your interview was lame. ??

  • What, she wants gender equality and so you won't listen to her music? That's intelligent.

  • Feminism is so great, that's so much to like about it! it's a sign of intelligence to be a feminist. ani difranco is awesome

  • I see sarcastic youtube commenting, but no points are being made. Feminism means different things to different people, but the way I generally interpret it- and the way I think Ani Difranco is a feminist- is in simply respecting women as equal people. I don't see what's wrong with that.

  • David, I agree, he's a lousy interviewer and makes the whole thing so benign it's just useless. Ani's a great artist but she's never really had a good interview, I think partly because everyone just talks to her like she's a political demographic.

  • George's show is just entertainment. He makes his guests feel relaxed so they can just open up about whatever. He's more of a celebrity talk show host like, say, Conan O'Brien or someone to that affect. In this forum he's not a critical journalist, so people shouldn't expect him to be. I enjoy the interviews on the hour, it seems to allow the guests to speak pretty candidly, which I like.

  • i think you are right - I haven't seen someone be able to interview her in an honest way - I've met and spoken with her on a few occasions - and she isn't at all like how she comes off in these cheesy interviews!

  • Unprofessional how? Because he actually engages in conversation and genuine discourse rather than the rehearsed, over polished drivel that's normally fed to us?

  • I suppose your mind is closed then in your ideolgy? I mean I pretty much loathe conservatives but I get some of there points. It's just that I see the world around me and it clearly hasn't worked from that perspective.

  • and yet virtually all of america's problems today, Minerva, from the entrenched wars to the decimated economy, and the terrible legacy of reaganomics to the substandard quality of life relative to the rest of the West can all be linked to one ideology: the ideology of the hawks, the neocons, the warmongers and the GOP. Congrats on your ignorance. You are the problem.

  • That's alright, we hate you, too.

Seriously, though, don't worry. The way the "conservatives" are acting these days, you'll all die out and leave the world to the liberals anyway, so you won't have to deal with us anymore. Evolution has no place for a group of people who actively hate so many people and work so hard to ruin their lives.

  • whats a wetback anyway? I'm english so maybe it's an american thing? Where does it come from? What's the etymology? xxx

  • A wetback I believe is someone from the carribean living in america. The idea being that they floated over on an inner tube and would therefore have a wetback.

  • "Wetback is a derogatory term used to describe Mexicans who have immigrated illegally to the United States by swimming or wading across the Rio Grande--the river that separates the U.S. from Mexico. U.S." - Urban Dictionary

  • 6:46.

    She was right.

    Hey John McCain.

  • I don't like that she used that term either I was like "whoa, really?" I love her but like damn. That was disrespectful.

  • not that it matters to me , bacause most slang isnt racist but she definately said "Wet back" for all you douch bags trying to say she didnt lol 7:32

  • A lot of females who Identify as Bi do end up settling down with men. Female sexuality is very fluid. Not so much set in stone. Why is everyone hating? It's all about acceptance. Her music kicks that's what matters.

  • I think 'sexuality' is fluid & not as concrete as we've been told. It may be a bit more fluid or abstract within gals or maybe gals are just allowed to take a glance at their sisters & not get slammed for it as much as guys would. If it makes you happy, what's the prob?

  • Ani never presented herself as a Lesbian.. all the way we knew she was bi ...having a kid doesn't change anything.. her fans love her for her music/ lyrics/ poetry ...

she has a widespread mixture of fans male & female .. just people who enjoy good lyrics accompanied by good music .... simple as that Earl.

  • I've always loved Ani's music. Never new she was so beautiful and so intelligent.

  • Further, you don't even live like an immigrant, you have fame and fortune.....don't pretend to be a broke immigrant with a child going to canada, over the top, Ani I'm a fan but please get real......

  • Ani, I wish you didn't say that......NO matter what everyone says, you didn't have to say wetback, you could have said an immigrant, which by the way everyone is. WETBACK???? Very dissapointing.

  • The term wetback is a real description to certain lawbreakers - not a slur.

  • HAHAHAHA It's not a slur? That's so ridiculous.

  • fiercly honest musician...we need more like her.

  • "fiercely honest" is just a euphemism for obnoxious and self-righteous

  • I really love her music, she is amazing.

  • amazing amazing woman

  • I love her...Its hard to be famous and an individual at the same time. Somebody is always gonna try to pin you with some type of label and expectation

  • He kind of cuts her short. A very abrupt ending.

  • when she says she feels like a "wetback" i believe she just means a person who crosses into another country that is unwelcome there, and that she feels like the Canadians would consider her a beggar/intruder. i know the term is a slur, but shes not really using it in the typical way.

  • I think that is a mature, observational response

  • Hah, she was right. They slipped John Mcain in. Somehow. =P

  • i think she is a wacky girl .. very intelligent, and i hope to meet her,,,, that comment below about the abortion was rude and uncalled for, you have to clue what it means to make that decision so be quiet !!!

  • she clearly says "white guy".

  • Ani <3

  • why?

  • she isn't like what I thought she'd be like.

  • Wetback? i mean, I love ani, but that was kinda rude...

  • Why are you here then? The title clearly says Ani Difranco...not "A Place for People to Post Their Inanae Comments". Get lost.

  • Glad we're now on the same page.

  • why are all the below comments about how sexy she is - or isn't? Rather than about, perhaps, her new album or what she's talking about in her interview - something that she actually has some control about and that actually means something?

  • I love the hour, I love Ani, Loved this video! It's nice to see someone openly speak about politics and not fear what anyone has to say or think, that is democracy in motion!

  • homophobe.

  • hahahahahaha, touche

  • Ani is just wonderful!

  • Sexiest female singer WITH TALENT since Stevie Knicks and maybe Pj Harvey

  • she's HOTTTT!!!!!!!!
