Watching the interview, past halfway, she has yet to mention a single political stance. So far it's about her career & baby. Canon was a greatest hits album discussing her past career IS discussing the material on the album.
As for talking politics, check the date, it's during the ramp up towards '08 election. A pretty relevant topic to be discussing at the time, Ani's been political for most of her career. To watch an interview with her where politics isn't covered a little would be odd.
i know. and you have a point about it being during the election, which i didn't notice before, so thanks for pointing it out. but still, she didn't talk about politics within her MUSIC, she talked about politics in general. her choice candidates, etc. so really, if half the interview is focusing on that when she is a musician and not a politician, i found it a bit disappointing.
also, i never mentioned anything about her talking about her past career. her music CAREER in general was exactly what i wanted to hear about, and i am aware that canon is a greatest hits album.
You guys are crazy. I almost think that she is SO anti-racist that she didn't even think twice about saying it....because she doesn't think of wetback in a derogatory way like you all do.
I cannot believe that Ani DiFranco would use such a derogatory word like, "wetback." My heart nearly skipped a beat when I heard her say that hurtful word! I can't help but say that a lot of the magic that I felt when listening to her music has been lost ever since I listened to this.
I totally agree- the interview was decent and then she just dropped that long a bomb but a silent bomb that she didn't even seem to notice she dropped. It really forced me to think twice and farther into someone I considered one of my icons. Thanks for posting this comment- I very probably wouldn't of listened to this whole interview if you hadn't mentioned your concern.
Relax! I don't think it was meant like that. I am a Hispanic woman that has had a few derogatory slang things said around me. I think she was just saying that she felt foreign in that land. I know that this woman is not a bigot , and we all need to ease up on the PC thing. I am so tired of the paranoia..
I guess I better statement would of been 'used to be one of my icons'- now I suppose I find most of her (and most singer/songwriters) interviews relatively boring.
My wife is Latino and I don't think what Ani said was anything really racy. I am a Jew and have gone through a share of bigotry and this does not offend me one bit. Chill out, Ani is not a racist.
There's a difference between calling someone a wetback and saying that you, personally, feel like one. It's a corollary of the "Are we children of a lesser god?" sentiment, in the case of the latter. Get over yourself. She was tactless but I seriously doubt a hardcore left-wing biracial bisexual female singer-songwriter can get away with being racist. She would alienate her bra-burning hippie-loving flag-torching commie friends. (Wait, that didn't come out right.) :)
I see sarcastic youtube commenting, but no points are being made. Feminism means different things to different people, but the way I generally interpret it- and the way I think Ani Difranco is a feminist- is in simply respecting women as equal people. I don't see what's wrong with that.
David, I agree, he's a lousy interviewer and makes the whole thing so benign it's just useless. Ani's a great artist but she's never really had a good interview, I think partly because everyone just talks to her like she's a political demographic.
George's show is just entertainment. He makes his guests feel relaxed so they can just open up about whatever. He's more of a celebrity talk show host like, say, Conan O'Brien or someone to that affect. In this forum he's not a critical journalist, so people shouldn't expect him to be. I enjoy the interviews on the hour, it seems to allow the guests to speak pretty candidly, which I like.
i think you are right - I haven't seen someone be able to interview her in an honest way - I've met and spoken with her on a few occasions - and she isn't at all like how she comes off in these cheesy interviews!
Unprofessional how? Because he actually engages in conversation and genuine discourse rather than the rehearsed, over polished drivel that's normally fed to us?
I suppose your mind is closed then in your ideolgy? I mean I pretty much loathe conservatives but I get some of there points. It's just that I see the world around me and it clearly hasn't worked from that perspective.
and yet virtually all of america's problems today, Minerva, from the entrenched wars to the decimated economy, and the terrible legacy of reaganomics to the substandard quality of life relative to the rest of the West can all be linked to one ideology: the ideology of the hawks, the neocons, the warmongers and the GOP. Congrats on your ignorance. You are the problem.
Seriously, though, don't worry. The way the "conservatives" are acting these days, you'll all die out and leave the world to the liberals anyway, so you won't have to deal with us anymore. Evolution has no place for a group of people who actively hate so many people and work so hard to ruin their lives.
A wetback I believe is someone from the carribean living in america. The idea being that they floated over on an inner tube and would therefore have a wetback.
"Wetback is a derogatory term used to describe Mexicans who have immigrated illegally to the United States by swimming or wading across the Rio Grande--the river that separates the U.S. from Mexico. U.S." - Urban Dictionary
A lot of females who Identify as Bi do end up settling down with men. Female sexuality is very fluid. Not so much set in stone. Why is everyone hating? It's all about acceptance. Her music kicks that's what matters.
I think 'sexuality' is fluid & not as concrete as we've been told. It may be a bit more fluid or abstract within gals or maybe gals are just allowed to take a glance at their sisters & not get slammed for it as much as guys would. If it makes you happy, what's the prob?
Ani never presented herself as a Lesbian.. all the way we knew she was bi ...having a kid doesn't change anything.. her fans love her for her music/ lyrics/ poetry ...
she has a widespread mixture of fans male & female .. just people who enjoy good lyrics accompanied by good music .... simple as that Earl.

This is very comical and ironic video Feminists and lesbos love Ani, because that's how she sold herself for years. When she "betrayed" her original fanbase by showing herself to be hetero, marrying, and having children -- then decries on this show the fact that "she cannot shape her life for her fans" -- the level of hypocrisy is staggering.
Anyway, her music is slop and her fans are fat, manless, and hairy-legged, so there you go. Guess both sides deserve the other.
Further, you don't even live like an immigrant, you have fame and fortune.....don't pretend to be a broke immigrant with a child going to canada, over the top, Ani I'm a fan but please get real......
Ani, I wish you didn't say that......NO matter what everyone says, you didn't have to say wetback, you could have said an immigrant, which by the way everyone is. WETBACK???? Very dissapointing.
I love her...Its hard to be famous and an individual at the same time. Somebody is always gonna try to pin you with some type of label and expectation
when she says she feels like a "wetback" i believe she just means a person who crosses into another country that is unwelcome there, and that she feels like the Canadians would consider her a beggar/intruder. i know the term is a slur, but shes not really using it in the typical way.
i think she is a wacky girl .. very intelligent, and i hope to meet her,,,, that comment below about the abortion was rude and uncalled for, you have to clue what it means to make that decision so be quiet !!!
why are all the below comments about how sexy she is - or isn't? Rather than about, perhaps, her new album or what she's talking about in her interview - something that she actually has some control about and that actually means something?
I love the hour, I love Ani, Loved this video! It's nice to see someone openly speak about politics and not fear what anyone has to say or think, that is democracy in motion!

You guys are crazy. I almost think that she is SO anti-racist that she didn't even think twice about saying it....because she doesn't think of wetback in a derogatory way like you all do.

Ani Rocks
aashley0313 2 years ago
I cannot believe that Ani DiFranco would use such a derogatory word like, "wetback." My heart nearly skipped a beat when I heard her say that hurtful word! I can't help but say that a lot of the magic that I felt when listening to her music has been lost ever since I listened to this.
RomieC123 2 years ago
I totally agree- the interview was decent and then she just dropped that long a bomb but a silent bomb that she didn't even seem to notice she dropped. It really forced me to think twice and farther into someone I considered one of my icons. Thanks for posting this comment- I very probably wouldn't of listened to this whole interview if you hadn't mentioned your concern.
chrisbleux 2 years ago
Relax! I don't think it was meant like that. I am a Hispanic woman that has had a few derogatory slang things said around me. I think she was just saying that she felt foreign in that land. I know that this woman is not a bigot , and we all need to ease up on the PC thing. I am so tired of the paranoia..

@heartluc Exactly. :)

if she were one of your "icons", you would have listened to the whole thing anyway...get a grip!
ruslj 2 years ago
I really wanted to argue with you- but I can't.
Touche.
I guess I better statement would of been 'used to be one of my icons'- now I suppose I find most of her (and most singer/songwriters) interviews relatively boring.
chrisbleux 2 years ago
My wife is Latino and I don't think what Ani said was anything really racy. I am a Jew and have gone through a share of bigotry and this does not offend me one bit. Chill out, Ani is not a racist.
yuradisman 2 years ago 2
There's a difference between calling someone a wetback and saying that you, personally, feel like one. It's a corollary of the "Are we children of a lesser god?" sentiment, in the case of the latter. Get over yourself. She was tactless but I seriously doubt a hardcore left-wing biracial bisexual female singer-songwriter can get away with being racist. She would alienate her bra-burning hippie-loving flag-torching commie friends. (Wait, that didn't come out right.) :)

shit, she is feminist?, never listening to her again
brayvo 2 years ago
What, she wants gender equality and so you won't listen to her music? That's intelligent.
Leahlemur 2 years ago 3
Feminism is so great, that's so much to like about it! it's a sign of intelligence to be a feminist. ani difranco is awesome
brayvo 2 years ago 4
I see sarcastic youtube commenting, but no points are being made. Feminism means different things to different people, but the way I generally interpret it- and the way I think Ani Difranco is a feminist- is in simply respecting women as equal people. I don't see what's wrong with that.
Leahlemur 2 years ago 5
David, I agree, he's a lousy interviewer and makes the whole thing so benign it's just useless. Ani's a great artist but she's never really had a good interview, I think partly because everyone just talks to her like she's a political demographic.
schroeder666 2 years ago
George's show is just entertainment. He makes his guests feel relaxed so they can just open up about whatever. He's more of a celebrity talk show host like, say, Conan O'Brien or someone to that affect. In this forum he's not a critical journalist, so people shouldn't expect him to be. I enjoy the interviews on the hour, it seems to allow the guests to speak pretty candidly, which I like.
JimmyBronx 2 years ago
i think you are right - I haven't seen someone be able to interview her in an honest way - I've met and spoken with her on a few occasions - and she isn't at all like how she comes off in these cheesy interviews!

Unprofessional how? Because he actually engages in conversation and genuine discourse rather than the rehearsed, over polished drivel that's normally fed to us?

Minerva4123 2 years ago
I suppose your mind is closed then in your ideolgy? I mean I pretty much loathe conservatives but I get some of there points. It's just that I see the world around me and it clearly hasn't worked from that perspective.
yancybutler 2 years ago
and yet virtually all of america's problems today, Minerva, from the entrenched wars to the decimated economy, and the terrible legacy of reaganomics to the substandard quality of life relative to the rest of the West can all be linked to one ideology: the ideology of the hawks, the neocons, the warmongers and the GOP. Congrats on your ignorance. You are the problem.
Slipthequeensome 2 years ago 4
That's alright, we hate you, too.
Seriously, though, don't worry. The way the "conservatives" are acting these days, you'll all die out and leave the world to the liberals anyway, so you won't have to deal with us anymore. Evolution has no place for a group of people who actively hate so many people and work so hard to ruin their lives.

whats a wetback anyway? I'm english so maybe it's an american thing? Where does it come from? What's the etymology? xxx
muckycherub 2 years ago
A wetback I believe is someone from the carribean living in america. The idea being that they floated over on an inner tube and would therefore have a wetback.

"Wetback is a derogatory term used to describe Mexicans who have immigrated illegally to the United States by swimming or wading across the Rio Grande--the river that separates the U.S. from Mexico. U.S." - Urban Dictionary

A lot of females who Identify as Bi do end up settling down with men. Female sexuality is very fluid. Not so much set in stone. Why is everyone hating? It's all about acceptance. Her music kicks that's what matters.
angelpaw 2 years ago 5
I think 'sexuality' is fluid & not as concrete as we've been told. It may be a bit more fluid or abstract within gals or maybe gals are just allowed to take a glance at their sisters & not get slammed for it as much as guys would. If it makes you happy, what's the prob?
FranklenWylder 2 years ago 2

I've always loved Ani's music. Never new she was so beautiful and so intelligent.

Further, you don't even live like an immigrant, you have fame and fortune.....don't pretend to be a broke immigrant with a child going to canada, over the top, Ani I'm a fan but please get real......
wintermelt 2 years ago
Ani, I wish you didn't say that......NO matter what everyone says, you didn't have to say wetback, you could have said an immigrant, which by the way everyone is. WETBACK???? Very dissapointing.

The term wetback is a real description to certain lawbreakers - not a slur.

DeepInSunshine 3 years ago 3
when she says she feels like a "wetback" i believe she just means a person who crosses into another country that is unwelcome there, and that she feels like the Canadians would consider her a beggar/intruder. i know the term is a slur, but shes not really using it in the typical way.
