  • It was one of my favorite games during those times. Thank you for sharing!

  • Bird Ass! LOL! Can we get that one for Atari 7800?

  • Looked this video up after reading Ready Player One, this game actually looks very entertaining. I haven't looked it up yet, but I hope that the XBox GameRoom has this game, Tempest, and Pac-Man as well.

  • The Atari 7800 version of Joust aka Bird Ass looks much better than the NES version. I personally like the Atari versions of this game.

  • Ya I got the game for my old NES but I can't get past wave five. And did the makers of this game make altered beast for genesis.

  • I grew up with Bird Ass. It's amazing. I love Bird Ass.

  • Can anyone help me find the old Mac game that was veeerrrrry similar to this? It was basically the same thing, but the background had hieroglyphs and stone...and there was lava at the bottom?

  • I loved finding this game in Donkey Kong 64.

  • @Wakkajakka Jetpac was the game in Donkey Kong 64. Rareware's first game.

  • hey, are you afraid of terrys?? jeje

  • i love bird ass

  • The only game that got nearly as much play time from me as "Joust" were the dueling tanks in "Combat"... so f'ing fun and full of laughs.

Man, I have such fond memories of the 2600... and that was the home gaming system that started it all.

  • they have a quest based on this in wow lol

  • Great. Now I'm going to be calling this game "Bird Ass" whenever I play it.

  • I knew a pair of kids back in the day who mastered the art of killing pterodactyls in the arcade. They got the lava hand to catch a Hunter and just waited on the 2nd level mid platform.

  • A time when games were played for fun and the only achievement you cared about was being number 1 in the Hall of Fame.

  • This looks like a 5200 game!

  • If it wasn't 1 in the morning after watching like 50 of your vids i'd so play that right now, guess I'll have to wait until morning noooooooooooooooooooo

  • you can really tell its by Williams as the sounds in joust are just like Defender , robotron and centipede though I am not sure who made the Atari 2600 version of centipede? I still have a factory sealed copy of Joust for the 7800 & I am seriously thinking of opening it, even though I have access to the game I much prefer playing on the original hardware. enjoyable review (as all-ways)

  • The black and white labels are probably because of Jack Trameil. Jack totally ruined the 7800. For one, they could have beat Nintendo to market, they had all of them sitting in a warehouse for years. They were really cheap about everything, didn't support or actively recruit 3rd parties and they did everything to keep the roms as small as possible. This machine could have been great had someone with vision been running Atari at the time. Only 2 games used the pokey! What were they thinking?

  • Still my favorite old school game, don't forget about that hand that comes out from the lava that pulls you down. And the egg wave, that's like an orgasm for a seven-year old.

  • you have the high score in berd ass!

  • I miss the old intro to CGR

  • Thy Game is Over.

  • @Snotnarok Very well said, ol' chap. Very well, indeed. Yes...

  • Bird Ass comment made me laugh pretty hard.

Good review/overview as usual. Keep it up!

  • Best arcade game in history. I'm still hooked 25 years later.

  • the best home version of Joust was on the Atari 7800

  • Does anybody know what the framerate was for Atari 7800? I tried to look up the frame rate for the early Nintendo systems and couldn't find it. It's interesting that when the bird moves around, the animation is excellent, but for the parts of bird moving, like the wings that flap, there are only 2 animations.

  • @PhilomathBret That might have more to do with the interlacing than anything else. This would look different if you played it I assume.

  • that game is HORRIBLE ! ! !

  • duuuuuuuudee get a hair cut and some real jod

but if u still want make reviews watch irate gamer and some angryvideogamenerd.s videos

  • @AdolfNinjaHitler dude you should quit your job and go back to school. The Angry Video Game Nerd just takes not so good games and complains about the bad parts of them. those "Reviews" are for entertainment purposes. This guy actully Reviews the games on important aspects like gameplay and diffulculty while making it enjoyable through simple jokes instead of angry rants and cursing frequently.

  • @yoshimasterleader but he is just a opposite.

he takes bad games and makes them look awesome.

my uncle has atari 2600 , 7800 and jaguar.and almost all the games are bad

  • @AdolfNinjaHitler well thats your opinion. i think atari games are quite fun. I do agree the arcade versions are much better but the atari versionn are fun. thats the thing with reviews there very and while one like avgn can make a game sound like its the worst thing in the world. while someone who didnt hate a game could make the same game sound intresting. for me I Loved Joust Battlezone and pacman for the arcades and two of those were fun on the atari.

  • @yoshimasterleader yeah indeed, mark reviews a game for what it is and then gives his opinions on it

all angry video game nerd and irate gamer does is just insult games over and over....we really dont need another reviewer doing that it would be pointless. mark is a godo reviewer, really informative and makes good point that nobody else makes about game...largely cus he intelligant and has knowledge on stuff

i think atari games are really fun too, some bad ones, but mostly really good

  • @yoshimasterleader

Precisely, plus Mark's easier on the ears as well. AVGN, to me, makes gamers look like a bunch of pencil necked geeks who have no lives and never will.

  • @TheCastellan thats why he called the angry videogame nerd! james made him to be angry and nerdy. i myself love the Nerd dont get me wrong. the avgn was made for entertainment purpases. i feel sorry for people woho take his episode too seriously.

  • this game rocks...its also very similar to balloon fight

  • Atari 7800 games have crappy labels because of Jack Tramiel. He didn't even want to release the 7800 and when he finally did they used grayscale labels to save money. I was a Nintendo kid but I think it's a tragedy that the 7800 was never given a chance. It's a technically superior machine to the NES and game developers could have made some kick ass games if they thought it would have been profitable. Jack Tramiel did a grave disservice to gamers.

  • my dad and i played this game to death!

  • hard game

  • Thy Game Is Over

  • Who would win in a fight: Bird Ass or Space's Ass? I don't think I really want to know

  • My uncle knows the guy who made this!

  • got 102,000 score on the playstation network when incredibly drunk.

  • If there was a 3D version, I think you should be able to use the right analog to aim your jousting stick up, down, L or R. They should maybe even have a shield to deal with, too.

  • I would love to see this in 3D! Not HD 2D or 2.5D, 3D!!! Flying EVERY direction and stickin' it to 'em!!

If I were to work @ a game company-that would be the first thing I'd make. :D

  • Time 0:43 is so Enduro! [C:

  • Inquiry: When I was a kid, I played this on the Atari 800. On that version, if you managed to smack the pterodactyl square on the nose with your joust, it dies and you get a bunch of points. (Really tricky to do) Is the same true on the 7800 version reviewed here?

  • I played these games in the arcade as a kid when they were new, and they were amazing! Joust in the arcade when new was one of the great ones, along with Defender, etc. Before that I remember Lunar Lander and asteroids, ha. Then along came Atari 2600, so much better than others. I think all my allowance went into cartridges, ha. Never had an Atari 7800, but look nice. Think went from Atari 2600 to Vic-20 or something, ha.

  • Ever play Joust 2? That game is way better than the first one. Only ever saw it in arcade once and it was awesome. Picked up a classic arcade disc for PS1 like 12 years ago and it had Joust 2 on it. It is so cool. You can turn into a Pegasus and even has boss fights. Love Joust always have..

  • 2:30

Watch the egg, is this an Atari game with physics?

  • i've been playing this game since i was 4!!!

  • Bird ASS, FTW!

  • Hey! I used to have this game! I remember that I could never understand why I was supposed to fight other ostrich riders, but it was sure fun as hell doing it.

  • this was my game back in the day i used to beable to get to level 80 before i died and that was when i was 5 now im 35 and i can barely pass lv40

  • Awesome, got this version of Joust on SNES on the William's Arcade greatest Hits cartridge. Has Defender, Defender II, Joust, Robotron 2084, & Sinistar-alot better version of Joust than 2600 in my opinion

  • You are aware that the 7800 cartridges were black and white because Tramiel (who owned Atari at the time) was cheap, right?

  • the 'physics' part of this game is kinda cool.. u know.. the controlling of the bird.

  • You forgot to mention how short it could be played on the two-player arcade model. I was one of those noisome bastard players that would hover over the pad where the other player was materializing. lol (But if it was a friend, I'd play more collaboratively unless we got too bored.)

  • thy game is over? lol

  • Bird Ass! :-) My buddies and I used to call it "Ass-Fu".

  • love this game!

  • hey inecomCompony lets play bird ass XD

  • The review ended like the end of an 80's sitcom.

  • This version of Joust is nearly identical though the 2600 version has more nostalgic value to me.

  • bird ass

  • I absolutely love Joust! Used to play it with my friend on his megadrive for ages XD

  • It is,Its just since the 7800 had such a short life span most game Developers didn't have enough time to use all the system had to offer

  • yeah but still....

  • Nothings going to change that now...

  • There actually is a true "Joust" aspect to this game.. You can kill the fast flying "Petrodactyls" by stabbing them in the beak with your Joust stick. It's rather difficult to do, but can be done.

  • @maddmaxstar It was always random and I never knew how it happened!

  • they hav this game, robotron, and digdug in the xbox arcade

  • i enjoy the old arcade mortal kombat games cuz their challenging

  • Man, the 7800's sounds are so cheap and annoying. Had no idea (never saw one of these consoles back in the day).

Even the 5200 had better sound. And ColecoVision was in a whole other realm of sound quality.

  • For backward compatibility purposes with the Atari 2600, 7800 used the same sound chip as the 2600, with the game makers having the option to implement their own sound chip on the game cart itself. (See Ballblazer for the 7800)

It's too bad that hardly anyone made use of it. Instead, the bulk of the 7800's games sound like cheap handheld tiger electronics games. Check out 7800 Donkey Kong Jr. if you want your ears to bleed.

  • Yeah both the donkey kongs should have had their own sound chips. They just sound soooooo bad. With better sound I'd prefer them over the colecovision ones but the sound just isn't there.

  • Bird Ass! Rejoice, mortals!

  • Awesome game! Great memories of the arcades and the countless hours spent there.

This was the first game I bought off the PS3's PSN store.

  • Joust is awesomeness incarnate.

  • deos any one know the name os the song/theme that is played at the intro of this vid please?

  • Can you imagine having insane ideas like this nowadays? That'd be damn bloody great!

  • Land you bird ass on the other player???

No, no, no. The goal is to have your staff higher than the other guy, even if it's only one pixel difference.

  • Atari>Next-gen =D

  • You're so wrong, there's no net play, FPS, or even HD! *is being sarcastic, loves his genesis greatly*

  • @amari2001 uhh... not sure about that lol

  • @amari2001 No, Atari IS next gen =D

  • @amari2001 Atari<Nintendo

  • id rather play robotron but joust is good

  • joust is awesome

  • I'm going to put my quarters into Bird Ass!

  • Is is any better than saying "I'm off now to play with my Wii"?

    Both are hilarious ^_^

  • playing with your Wii only sounds vaguely dirty. Playing with Bird Ass is just plain nasty

  • Fair point. You have converted me to Bird Assism.

  • "Timmy, don't EVER go to the arcade again"

    LOL

  • I found the game very enjoyable using the SNES controller on Williams Greatest Hits for the SNES.

  • I find it disappointing that the audio is exactly the same in both the 2600 and 7800 ports :-(....still, an incredible game.

  • man you are good

  • You did not explain this or maybe you just didn't know but one could also joust the Terradactyl for extra points but you have to joust it right in the center of its beek or else you die.

You're right, Joust was and still is the best arcade game out there.

  • Atari was in a bit of financial trouble at the time, that's why the carts were probably b&w, just to cut costs as much as possible.

  • This, Commander Keene and the original Mario Bros. were my favourite games back when we still had the old 486 running DOS. Aah, those were the days...

  • giant bird ass lol

  • I have this game on one of the Midway Arcade Treasures discs for PS2. This is a great game to put on every now and then.

  • I'm still searching for Midway arcade treasures 2. The third one is everywhere though!

  • I have seen a used copy of the game you speak of once. I got Midway arcade treasures 1 & 2 brand new for 20 each. You can get them on Amazon brand new but they go for 40-50 dollars now. Best Buy or Target might carry them.

  • They were on drugs when they made this.

  • you can definatly tell its by williams as it has a lot of very familiar sounds ,used both in defender & robotron

  • It seems that this game is as intresting as going outside throwing rocks. Altought throwing rocks can be more developing.

  • my ps3 wants to violate my intellivision game system by the power connector

  • this reminds me of balloon fight...another great game!

  • I had a nifty rip-off on my C64 called bagdad where you rode magic carpets.

  • I put so much money into that game in the 80's.....it was the only one I really played.....

  • My Sports Medicine teacher told me to look this up after he saw me drawing a Pacman silhouette in class. I laughed thinking this would be real jousting. I actually want to play this game now :D

  • It was games like these is why I bought a 7800. The Tramiels owned Atari at the time and were notorious for being cheap, Nintendo has taken that place admirably...LOL Joust is a classic, heres to great classic arcade games! :)

  • poor timmy

  • I still think the game that eats The most ammount of quarters ever is Metal Slug...

  • Not if your good :-)

Well, the original anyway(#3 is insanely difficult.)

  • I love this game :D me and my friend play this sometimes just have fun :D

  • how do you kill the pterodactyls?

  • hit em in the mouth

  • I don't know if it is true in all versions, but in the Atari 400/800 port you were able to kill the pterodactyl in either (!) end.

  • Great games. I have this on Midway Arcade Treasures. I have both disc 1&2. Great ports of all the arcade games on this collection. These old games are a challenge and i like a nice simple game with a challenge. Good to get a break from all the 3D graphics of todays games.

  • This game looks great.

  • You are right--the reason that 7800 catridges were printed in Black and White was because of cost reduction. In fact, a lot of the Atari 2600 games re-leased with the red label (Jr. Pac-Man, Midnight Magic, etc), are printed in Black and White.

  • Actually, imagine how popular a game called "Bird Ass" would have been. Self explanatory. xD

  • The Black and White labels were because Jack Tramiel was cheap. The 7800 was ready to release in 1984 (with most of the games that were eventually released), but Jack declared consoles were dead and just sat on them. When the NES was a hit two years later, he tried to cash in by dusting off the old consoles and games. Imagine how great 7800 games could have been if Jack hadn't stopped development for two years and been so cheap.

  • bird ass lol

  • I wanna play some bird ass.

  • Sorry for the double post, stupid youtube :P

  • Haha.

The animation on the birds legs is pretty smooth; I am impressed. I agree with the rest, a classic!

  • Bird Ass LOL! Great stuff! I think we found Game Room HD's "thing" now. CGR had the squirrel among other things (and plenty of beer), GRHD has BIRD ASS! lol Mark great stuff bud! And of course another kickass review! :)

  • "Bird Ass".. ROFL, What a classic.

  • I did get the high score in Bird Ass....I was the Bird Ass champion.
