  • this is such a great video!!! sherry cervi is my idol and im from az as well!!!i work my mare in a draw rien or martingale with a rollar snaffle but when i run her i use sherry cervi bit that is the chain gag mouthpiece, but i normally run in a very very very very loose tie down, but as loose as stingrays. i do that because i feel more comfortable but my horse still gives and doesnt lean on it but the reason i do is sometimes she will get to head high and i just feel more comfortable in one.

  • @Life4Rodeo Awesome! Glad to hear you've found the right combination of bits to use on your horse. Most people find that perplexing ;)

    Happy Trails!

  • Thanks for your kind compliments but I'm not Sherry. She is one of the best riders around though. She just won her 3rd World Championship at the WNFR in December. I admire your jumping ability. I know its also extremely hard to do it as well and requires great skill. Glad you are enjoying the training videos. There are 4 of Chappi and 2 of her on a horse named Harley. I will have to upload more soon... Happy Trails!

  • @silverchex Shoot I don't know why I thought you were her! And yes I love Sherry I've watched her ride for years and just love her! Her favorite horse of mine is Stingray. And thanks for your compliment! That means a lot! I put a lot of hard work into my show life!

  • @BarrelRacingPaints you're welcome. I really like Stingray too. She's awesome. Already broke the arena record at the NFR. What a horse!

  • @silverchex Oh I know! She's such a little athlete that little mare! And her coloring is SO different! I totally love her!

  • I am both and english and western rider and I have the best of both world. I show the A circuit for jumpers hitting show grounds such as;Ocala-WEF, Hampton Classics, Any/all of the Hits, and so on. You are on of the best riders I've seen. I just love the way you sit on a horse and just go with it! You are SO relaxed and fluent...I'm envious really. I can't wait to get back into barrels with my new mare! Youre making me excited about it!

    Thanks

  • I love her riding techniques :) I have a QH he is 7 named Digger i am working with him. Hopefully by summer i will be able to do some BCBRA with him. My other horse Niska is a QH/morgan and he loves to barrel race. When we do barrel race though he gets excited and swings his head all the time. Do you have any ideas what could help this? thanxx :)

  • @Karkar482215 Sounds like you need to do some slow work with him. Whenever a horse starts getting too excited slow him down and do circles till you feel him start to relax. Usually in a slow lope. Keep your body and hands 'quiet' no matter how he's acting. Horses are very sensitive to body language.

  • @Karkar482215 Sometimes I will circle the barrel and keep his body correct till he begins to relax but if he's too chargy I'll do it away from the barrels then take him back to it when he's settled down. Its all about repetition and consistency. It might take some time to change some bad habits so be patient. Then when you feel he is solid again you can move him faster. If he goes back to being too excited just slow him down again till he's correct. Hope that helps...

  • @silverchex Thank you so mmuch! I will try this once i start barrel racing in the spring (It is really snowy and icey) thanx again :))

  • @Karkar482215 You're welcome! You might want to subscribe to the Barrel Horse News online or the print mag. Its a great mag for barrel racers and many of the pros give their advice for training, feed, care etc for your barrel horse. The current issue has Sherry Cervi on the cover winning the World title at the NFR or her fantastic horse Stingray.

  • I want to thank you for posting the videos. Even if I only use one technique from the video it may help my horse and I to make a difference in our ride. I don't believe in going to a clinic and taking every word as though it was the only thing ever spoken, but I really to think some people should never comment. Great work!

  • @AvidDasher Yes I'm a firm believer that you will learn something from it. And what works for one may not work for another. And yes some ppl shouldn't comment and I've given them every chance to straighten up so now they will be blocked from this video thread. Thanks for your comments. I hope you had a great Christmas and a prosperous New Year ahead!

  • Hahahahah how can she be a world champion, anyone that have rode for over 2 years could have done that. She have a terrible seat and the saddle doesn't fit at all. And don't call me a "stupid english rider", I have tried both disiplines, but I find english much more fun

  • @sigridandbilly Aww now your ignorance is showing. I've ridden both dressage horses and barrel raced. Her seat and hands are very correct. That horse is very high strung and she's keeping him 'quiet'. And btw, she has already won her 3rd world championship as of tonight even before the 10th round has been run. Barrel racing is much harder than you think unless of course you only have done it from an amateur's standpoint. Don't comment here again if you don't have anything nice to say.

  • @silverchex Her thumbs is pointing inwards, I have seen someone on a horse video call it "piano hands". It ruins the riders seat.

  • @sigridandbilly She is one of the 'best' in barrel racing. If you've ever sat on a high strung barrel horse who has to be trained over and over again at slow speeds to get the control needed at an all out gallop you would know. I think its petty to pick out something as trivial as the way her hands are when she's accomplished so much. After all 'barrel racing' is not a show/judged event. You have to go with what works on different horses to be successful. Kudos to Sherry for her 3rd WORLD title!

  • @silverchex Maybe I don't ride western every day, but I still have a clue. The fact that it's only the time that counts makes the competition unfair, because good rider with cheap horses has a bader chance than poor riders with expensive horses. And I don't really understand all the fuss with barrel racing, it's not that fun (or challelenging) as people say.

  • @sigridandbilly And once again your ignorance is showing. It tells me you don't know anything about barrel racing. And because of all the fuss you put it down. I took a $400 reg QH that I bought as a 2 year old and spent years training her. She took my daughter to an all around rookie of the year title in High School as well as numerous events won on her. Kristie Peterson bought her horse for $800 and spent years of training and he took her to 4 World titles. So stop being a hater...

  • @silverchex 400 for a horse?! Seriously?! Here in Norway a cheap/a bit under average horse goes for about 10 000. Haha, people would earn more money by selling it to a slaughter house

  • @sigridandbilly First you make fun of how much money is spent on the horses and 'buying' the barrel racing titles. When I refute it you make fun of that. So I will give you one last answer and you will be blocked from this discussion forevermore for your ignorant rude ranting. The $400 horse became a $30,000 horse when we were done with her because of how successful she was. Kristie Peterson's horse won 4 world titles and became a $100,000+ horse. You are ignorant and foolish. So bye bye to you

  • @sigridandbilly - wow..... if its not that hard, please win next years NFR so that you can show all of us how its done, Sherry Cervi included

  • @sigridandbilly yes barrel racing is very challenging. I have ridden almost every disipline from dressage to barrel racing, and barrel racing is by far one of the most challenging sports I have ever done. My one mare, who was bought for just $500 and was 100lbs. In my first year, i didn't know anything I was running times 3 seconds slower then everyone else, now she is a 2D horse 3 years later and we qualified for worlds, but I would not have done that with out several years of work.

  • @sigridandbilly - I Guess we are all intideld to our own opinion arent we? If you are only watching these videos to critizie her riding.. then you must not have anything better to do. But if you ask me i think it was a bit rude of you to comment on her video just to critize her..

  • @ShegotitmadePlies I was recommanded this video by a friend, and I don't watch videos "just" to say 'mean' comments

  • Wow great videos! Thanks for posting! Gives me a little more to work with with my horse. He is exactly like Chappi. But sometimes gets a little out of control, so I have been doing a lot of slow work and getting him to listen. Those roll backs look like they help, I will have to try it on my gelding this weekend before I take him to a race on Sunday. Haven't competed with him in over 3 years because of the control issue. So maybe this will help :)

  • @babysis940 Be careful with the rollbacks. Some horses calm down but more often it jacks them up. I do lots of circles with horses that are hyper and get them to relax by relaxing my body. Slow your speed till he gets solid again. You can never be in a hurry with a good horse. Patience is always the best cure. Make sure ur not using a grain that hypes him either. Sweet feeds will get them really high. I hope you do well at your race this weekend. We're headed to one in Utah and then a pro rodeo

  • @silverchex Thanks, the race didn't go all that well. I'm gonna have the chiropractor out for him. We ran a birangle race and I run that to the left. And with barrels I go to the right first. Well he started throwing his head and not wanting to turn. It was a pretty bad run. I'm trying new bits on him with a little tongue release to maybe help his head shaking (seems to help a little but have only done slow work with it), Then having the chiropractor out for him. I'm trying everything for him

  • My take on the horse going on the wrong lead to the end barrel is that he's sore on the left hind. May also explain the head tossing at the hard stops and why he tends to fall to the left when you back him.

  • @jaytsung Hi I watched to see what you were talking about. When Sherry backed him I watched her pull on that left rein a little more which caused him to back that way. He might be a bit sore concerning the hind lead but I watched him real close when she was long trotting him and he's trotting out smooth. His body language told me exactly what she was saying... That he's an older barrel horse who tends to be a bit chargy and exciteable. He needs lots of slow work to get him solid again

  • What kind of a bit i can use for my horse? he's an older horse and he neck reins

  • @MustangBarrelRacer Hi there, Sherry carries a line of bits that are really nice. Here's a link for several of them and you can choose according to how your horse responds to a bit. They have descriptions for each. And don't forget to get his teeth done by a good horse dentist. They know all about bit seats and what not to make your horse comfortable so they will respond to the bit correctly. Won't let me post the link. Message me...

  • Sherry sounds allot like my trainer. LOL

  • She sounds alot like taylor

  • the girl asking the questions sounds like taylor swift....

  • You are right, she does sound like taylor...
