songs like this is why I still am a Bowie fan 35 years later.......a late career masterpiece: beautifully constructed, sonically layered, emotionally sung.
The first listen of this track surprising me.Is very beautiful.I thought that Bowie's career was finished but when I bought Heathen I smiled even this track is a little sad
I am David Bowie's fan.I have listen all about him. After years came Heathen and I think is one of the best of it's career, and sleep away is sad but so amazing that I never will forget.Fabuloso Bowie.
unfortunately i didn't prepare a speech for you, but listening and looking at you i can't concentrate anyway. of course you are great as well any other day of the year.
you are my hero, i wish you knew it.
don't say you are not a hero! i say something else.
you are a part of my life! a really beautiful part! a reason to be alive.
Bowie used to catch this during a time when he was doing the elephant man on Broadway. He said him and Iggy Pop would sit back and watch Uncle Floyd. So funny to think of both of them watching this show along with me as a ten year old enjoying the silliness and escaping into my own little world. Good memories. Sad they don't have creative shows like that on TV anymore.
Uncle Floyd Show was a TV show from mid-1970s to early 1980s. It could be seen in NY city via UHF. It was VERY quirky, fun, kooky and full of NJ blue-collar type humor. Floyd is still around. He's here on Youtube somewhere.
I truly believe that if an extraterrestial finilly comes to earth one day, we'll definitely see "BOWIE" wrote down underneath his pale green skin. No new language to learn, no telepathic codes to receive but a tattoo to understand.
David Bowie, a big fan of the show, recorded the song "Slip Away" on his 2002 album, Heathen, as a tribute. The lyrics mention Uncle Floyd and his puppets "Oogie" and "Bones Boy". When asked how Bowie learned of the Uncle Floyd Show he replied, "John Lennon told me about it."[
I guess it's a tribute to the spirit of old-time entertainment. The old Vaudeville/Music Hall days must've had TONS of talented, unusual acts. John Lennon turned Bowie on the Floyd. He still lives and plays in N.J.
So beautyfull one of the best version of this song...sailing over coney island how i wonder where u are...makes me dreame twinkel twinkel uncle floyd...drama bowie
god, one of Bowie's best songs. i could easily see this fitting right into "Hunky Dory" Heathen was entirely a brilliant return to Bowie's earlier form.
Uncle Floyd was a pioneering UHF show and an early cable show. It came from New Jersey, but could be seen in NY city. It was very weird & quirky, but always fun to watch. Google him, he was VERY 70s.
I got to see him play this live in second row center stage. It was something that I can even put into words. Just think of something that was really awesome times infinity. He played this song and cried and had to walk off stage for a minute. It made me cry too. I just want to hug him and never let go.
like most bowie songs, it is up to you what you get out of it.for me, this song is about lost friends, fallen heroes, the end of innocence etc..could just be a tribute to uncle floyd.
"Uncle Floyd" is Floyd Vivino, the man featured in the video clip at the start. His show had a cult following in the 1970's and 1980's. He's still around and performing (Google "Floyd Vivino") but never made it big. "Bones Boy" and Oogie" are puppets of Floyd's (Oogie is in the clip). David was a fan of the show in its heyday. He says John Lennon told him about it after Iggy Pop told Lennon about it!
Probably as a metaphor for the yearning of lost idealism of youth. Or perhaps that David never got a chance to appear on the show, so he wrote a song about Floyd. I get teary every time I hear it.
What can you say? Just proves this man's true greatness. Classic Bowie. The man is w/o peer and always will be.
