  • so so missed.....love this guy's guitar playing!!!!

  • My favorite guitar solo

  • world class musicians

  • dang zach galfanakis can play guitar!

  • @floaterincloud dang you're a stupid fuck!

  • @Neidhardt84 why, thank you

  • This is my favorite Shawn Lane solo. Goosebumps everytime.

  • Jonas Hellborg kinda looks like Guybrush Threepwood...

  • but does it blend? (joke. wonderful music)

  • There are no rock guitarist on this planet can improvise like Shawn Lane.

  • this is very good songs and i love it ;) Grüss aus Böhmen

  • hands down.... truly one of the best!!!

  • This is Love in music.

  • This is one of my favorite solos. Ever.

  • He plays a solo better than any I have ever heard and he DOESN'T LOOK AT THE FRETBOARD! Shawn you are a JERK, and I mean that with love.

  • @arsguitarrica - are + were

Sorry if you didn't know it.

    R.I.P. Shawn.

    Huis Clos anyone ?

  • @chucku00 He's still alive to me, just not embodied.

  • @arsguitarrica Your concept of desincarnation is quite interesting...

  • lol holy crap, I never get tired of watching Shawn play, even focusing on what hes doing.. all of a sudden BAM hes got the tremolo bar on hand, wth!

  • Shawns solo in this is speachless... brilliant band, brilliant people

  • is it just me or does he sortof look like aphex twin

  • @00Dakka Jonas is not as spooky as Richard D James !

  • amazing

  • The place was the warehouse of a cool drum shop in Atlanta Georgia called...Atlanta Drums and Percussion....RIP ADP

  • Jaw dropping, dropping, dropping..............still dropping

  • bass solo

  • dammit I'm sick of this piecemeal shit, WHERE IS THE WHOLE SHOW?

  • Not many people are born with a sole purpose in life. Shawn was and it was to make music.

  • @Kingding6 Everyone was born with a sole purpose. As your brain feels conflicted by itself it's truely just the multiple amount of souls each person carries until death. The melding pot theory works best in my opinion.

  • 4:05 + tear jerking shit. one of the few vids i can cry to. satriani has a few, but damn, this is intense

  • Shawn's guitar play in this video is as good as anything I've ever heard or seen played. Absolute magic.

  • @BetterTasteThanU no its not, you have crappy taste!

  • @mphillips0052

It's a shame he goes around talking crap about other people's music.

But he came to the one spot, where his words are void, cause we all know the magic that is lane.

  • @BetterTasteThanU

you must have been looking for the Jonas Brothers, different group

  • Lane... just can be compared with becker, but still Lane is in another level, because he could shred as fast as MAB and Cooley and at the same time could put the same feeling that Satriani and Johnson use to play avery day.

  • Yep. Status!

  • Status?

  • I just wish I has gotten a chance to see Shawn live but now that will never happen

  • Shawn Lane gone but definetly not forgotten!!!!

  • a tortured soul played this

  • Comment removed

  • Great - but Jonas best bass tone for me was way back when he used his Wal!

  • Shawn's solo brings tears to my eyes!

  • this is awesome i really like this style

  • Shawn Lane is the brest ever!! When this group was "ON" nobody could touch them in the mid 90's. Nobody!! Hellborg and Sipe gave Shawn that balance that they needed to make a great band. I love hos POT stuff, but there is balance in musicianship with HLS.

  • shawns transitions got me into bebop music. its soooo applicable as you can hear.

  • 5:00 umm take that yngvie

  • haha more like 0:00 -> 6:39 :)

  • This song has some of the Best Bassplayin i ever heard

    very good stuff

Check out Marcus Miller, Tony Grey or

Tal Wilkenfeld if you like Jazz / Fusion Bassplayers

  • jonas is an amazing bassplayer and innovator...he invented the acoustic bass!

  • what album is this song from?

  • personae

  • great music ;)

  • This is the video that got me into whole Shawn Lane and Jonas Hellborg's music. (and whole fusion music itself) Jonas plays amazing bass in this vid and I'm glad he did because if I was turned off by first few minutes, I don't think I would've checked Shawn and Jonas' music again because I wan't into this kind of music at the time I first watched this video.

  • ME TOO!!! HELL IS... was the song that got me hooked... Jonas kicks in, and you get goosebumps... then Shawn kicks in and hypnotizes you with that blazing tranquility... from another dimension. AND there you are ... completely blown away!!! smiles:)

  • This is the video that cost me 3 grand. One minute, I'm watching Jonas playing his solo, then the next, I'm opening a box from Status-Graphite with a Hellborg signature bass in it. That is a sweet freakin' axe, lemme tell ya.

  • @littlerattyratratrat have you still got it??

  • is this song deep umbra or hell is other people?

  • both right because they made two different versions and named them different. But this one is more close to hell is...

  • shawn lane, among all the greats that hopefully, i can reach his ability if not close maybe at least 10% would even be sufficient but of course, time is the enemy.

  • love the title....quoted from Jean-Paul Sartre haha

  • From what album is this song? I recently bought "Good people in times of evil" the other day, have to say that it must be the best buy i've ever done..

  • Comment removed

  • yeah, the 2 doors album has a really good version. i find the personae album a little slow and calculated. still great though. out of the studios i like temporal analogs the best.

  • hey, your comment is a little old but anyways the song is from the album "Time is the enemy", hope I helped;-)

  • I think every album I've bought featuring Jonas Hellborg and Shawn Lane is "the best buy I've ever done". How can you go wrong with them?

  • =), do you buy from bardorecords then? or local shops? ^^

  • Alas, local shops carry very little of taste, I get most of it from amazon. I highly reccommend you get "abstract logic" if you don't already have it. =)

  • Layla attat =), yes i have it.. though i downloaded that one (a).. hehe...

Love that they put a song for each instrument to solo, i like the piano solo, but ofcourse it's nice to hear jonas all by himself =)

  • that solo is a tear jerker. awesome note choice.

  • Shawn Lane is the man and I'm honored to go to the same high school and take the same recording class he did

  • shawn can never be touched by any mortal guitarist he is truly the best I am so grateful for access to his beautiful phrasing at any speed, any one who really loves guitar like I do knows that shawn will always be unsurpassed .

  • Im just getting into Lane's stuff and he really is amazing, what do you suggest as his masterpieces?

  • esperato

    gray pianos flying

    back

    epilogue (for lisa)

    imo

  • Thanks!

  • time is the enemy!

  • inspiring

    Shawn Lane is amazing

  • I wonder why Jonas stopped using Wal basses - that was his best tone IMHO!

  • That was his old Status signature bass, if I'm not mistaken. (And I'm not.) I agree, though, the tone is wicked cool.

  • oooo tasty basshook

  • well, jonas hellborg is a big name...he played with chick corea....not everybody can play with him. i offered chick corea 20 billion zloty, but he refused.

  • I guarantee you the person filming this was a bassist.

  • Shawn lane is awesome. I wish I could hug him.

  • You can, you just have to dig him up first.

  • thats horrible

  • lESSON 2; if I listen, you'll tell me your issue and now you have...you are a paranoid schizophrenic, cool. And you're always wrong. You didn't say "lack taste", you said "Americans know the least about music" I'm 100% truthful and you keep trying to weasel. Now you've told everyone I'm killing your brain but it's not me, it's you. GET HELP!

  • you started the offensive and name calling when you said,"Americans know the least about music" pokebackside don't you remember?!I do, and I could send your ignorant and hateful words to everyone and have the whole nation looking for you!Try to weasel out of this! Now you've proven you're a psycho, by attempting to accuse others for...what you, yourself are guilty of...BUSTED...AGAIN! Now go awaycuz every second spent here is another second you could've spent with your boyfriend.

  • mommy didn't pick you up... or change your diaper. Be a man and own up to your statement hungarian, you said "Americans know the least about music." I know this for a fact,I have it documented and then you disclaimed your country...that is sooo weak. You're pathetic and totally outclassed in all aspects:)

  • It was an American who invented the electric guitar, and 8trac recording,M.R. Less Paul,Dont know what being American or anyother nationality has to do with music but thought id throw that out there anyway.

  • you didn't approach the issues #1 that means you think you speak for MaB and S. Morse and P. Gilbert and #2 yes your words of hate, bringing up the idea of someone kicking someones ass is a hateful concept. #3 you bring up name calling right after a comment of teeny fanboy. You contradict youself alll the time... and deny your own country. That is soo weak:( Now for you psych lesson, You need attention so bad, even if it's negative, and that's why you keep comung back here to deface.

  • SHAWN LANE RULES! Stop coming here and defacing this monument with your words of hate and ingorance...lil girl

  • moron ...since when do you speak on behalf of Morse, Gilbert or MaB. and your site said you are from hungary, hahaha, and you said Americans know the least about music...But your faves are J. Winter P. Gilbert, and all Americans except for all the folk gypsy music you keep. And Finally, I'm part of the 1% of the population that can bench twice their body weight, a black belt in J.K.D.and an undefeated cage fighter,6&0. YOU CANNOT KICK MY ASS, you ugly bald frail bitch! porkbackside... bye bitch!

  • POLL...a poll. you dummy. Guess what the "P" stands for in GP...cuz you said GP player

  • oil.., "pork..", funny take on my handle. You must be from the south with that one. Homeboy of Shawn's by any chance? Wasn't he from Arkansas?

  • I'm from Chicago(home of the hitmen)and he was from Memphis, and you...you're from haha you're from haha hungary hahaha and too dumb to realize you just threw yourself to the wolves...GET HIM BOYS! Your messages are being deleted and not read, don't waste your time...unless you're a complete idiot, and I'm sure you will be! Buh-bye porkbackside!

  • OH my God, the solo blew me away. Lane always seems to impress me.

  • no one is trying to prove anything to you, and you don't have to give him another chance, but you should pull your head out of your ass, you and your worthless opinion are not the center of anyones universe except your own...and keep listening to all the people that idolize him like P. Gilbert and S. Morse and everyone else your listening to

    porkbackside

  • And don't miss SAVITRI...it is HEAVENLY!!!

  • And guitar was never the same again

This guy makes the guitar cry so beautifully

  • Fuckin sick. He was and is so completely under rated it's disgusting. Better than Vai.

  • I can't understand how you compared Shawn Lane to Michael Angelo Batio.

  • ...but he understands and let's leave it that way :)

  • Yeah it might be better that way :). (All listen Powers of Ten. Please :D)

  • Exactly. I think most people dismiss Shawn as merely a robotic speed freak simply because they haven't listened to Powers of Ten.

  • Doesn't breathe what? Air? Too robo huh? Listen to these 2 if you want to be open minded and have an informed opinion (1) Shawns

WATERMELON IN THE EASTER HAY and (2)Hellborg Lane-Paris DVD CLIP, and if you have A.D.D. start it at 4min. though I suggest listening to the whole masterpiece. IT BREATHES!

  • I dont understand how anyone can think Shawn Lanes music was robotic. I like so called shred music such as vai malmsteen satch etc....but Shawn was on a different level. His playing was never 'lets show aff and play real fast'. You could feel his passion. RIP Shawn

  • Shawn Lane. None better. Ever.

  • That last solo is awesome. I absolutely love the tone and feel. Hellborg isn't to shoddy on the slap bass either. Great stuff

  • I second that, as it is just so awesome.

  • I said it before...SHAWN makes love to a guitar, and when he's done,he sets it down... the guitar lights up a cigarette... basks in the glow, and tells him, "You're the best I've ever had!!!)"...RIP GREAT ONE ur misd

  • Transcendental!!!

  • holy f*ck

  • Don't worry, I know :)

  • Why is there a lumberjack playing the guitar? :)

  • that lumber jack is the late great Shawn Lane

  • drummer???

  • Jeff sipe say in extra info

  • ops...yeah, my bad.

  • Such an awesome song and performance!

  • on all most every famous guitarist there are bad comments and good coments!but i havent seen a bad comment on LANE.MICHAEL ROMEO-HE IS THE GUITAR MASTER!PAUL GILBERT-when you listen to him you fall to the ground

  • I am sure she is, but I hope Shawn's mother see's all these nice comments people have left on all his videos and is extremely proud of her son. It has to be tough to watch stuff like this if you are her but I hope it brings her some joy. Shawn was one of not even a handful of people in history that could make you cry with his instrument. First time i heard him it took me a minute to pick my jaw off the floor from just pure technical skill, but that really is secondary to his emotion and feel.

  • When I first heard this tune, I got so obsessed, I was listening to it all day along. I really mean it, I was listening to it while having shower, while dish washing, while driving, while eating, while working, while shopping etc..., day after day....... And then it started to die off fianlly after a half year, then I heard "Deep Umbra" my obsession with this tune fired up again, I can't get over how amazing Jonas and Shawn are. "Hell Is Other People" = Best 8 minutes in my life.

  • what incredible musicianship on everyones part. jeff sipe really knows how to accompany other peoples parts with his drumming, especially during some of shawns riffs.

  • best or not don t care... a great musician...

  • NO ONE EVEN COMES CLOSE! SHAWN ALONE RULES!!! I wish I could thank Buckethead personally for turning me on to SHAWN. He had dedicated a song to SHAWN and proclaimed him "THE GREATEST GUITARIST THAT EVER LIVED!" Buckethead was right...thanks to all...and R.I.P.GREAT ONE!!!

  • yep .. sad thing he's dead ...

  • Hmmm...Never heard of the song or him doing that. What song was it?

  • agree

  • oilkills: I could not have said it any better!!

  • so awesome when he starts soloing. i couldnt help but think that the intensity he showed probably was in part that he, unlike other people, knew his time was going to be cut short. powerful stuff

  • enOOOOOOOOrme

  • Three works together so well! Jeff Sipe is such a great drummer.

Buckethead worked with so many other musicians and I personally love his work with Jonas Hellborg the best. "Octave of the Holy Innocents" is such an amazing dark and heavy piece of work and it's done in acoustic! I always love album with Jonas in it. Like Jeff Sipe's "art of the jam"

    And Shawn Lane......... whatta master!!

  • as i had mentioned before, this is absolutely beautiful. those Formula One pentatonics at 4:58 get me every time! and the D at 5:22...it is amazing how poignant one note can be. masterful playing by three extremely gifted individuals.

  • ''Hell is Other people'' is the same as ''Deep umbra'' isnt it? like ''Stellar Rays'' that shawn renamed ''Time is the enemy'' right?

  • ''Hell is Other people'' is the same as ''Deep umbra'' isnt it? like ''Stellar Rays'' that shawn renamed ''Time is the enemy'' right?

    Right...seems like it indeed.

  • you're correct.

  • Holy fuck that was cool...

  • I like your comment, very straight to the point. =D

  • This is an absolute masterpiece. The interplay between the three is just amazing - Sipe's drumming when Hellborg and Lane are soaring is stonking. Jonas plays with such passion not to mention jaw-dropping heart that I took up bass playing from listening to this song - as for Shawn - I am so glad I came across him - an extraordinary genius.

  • APT Q258--Jeff Sipe is the MAN!

  • I truly believe that this is strictly the work of God himself. Shawn was a gift to this planet from some higher power. THE BEST, may he rest in peace. Thank you God!!

  • Pretty intense eh

  • So excellent! Until We Hear You Again;

Rest In Peace Shawn. . .

  • Just awesome!

I really do hope that his official website starts selling his albums so I can purchase it. (apparently other online stores sell his album illegally)

  • awsome with mattias IA Eklundh

    awsome with buckethead

best duo of all time with shawn lane

  • fun and enegetic with mattias

    cool and quirky with buckethead

brutally thrilling and heart breakingly beautiful with shawn!!

  • don't forget "transcendental with John McLaughlin"!

  • he worked with mclaughlin?! more info please!

  • He was in McLaughlin's 2nd/3rd Mahavishnu lineup.

He also did a lot of duet albums with McLaughlin.

There are plenty of them online. Just type in Hellborg McLaughlin in the youtube search window! :)

  • there seems to be a misunderstanding. i was talking about shawn.

  • Jonas is the greatest and so is Shawn Lane, the ultimate guitarist of all time

  • bellissimo!

    great musicians

  • and why isn't this guy really famous?

  • because most people like shitty music

  • beautiful

  • `hell is other people` a quote from jean paul sartre

  • really ? thats interesting
