This is the video that got me into whole Shawn Lane and Jonas Hellborg's music. (and whole fusion music itself) Jonas plays amazing bass in this vid and I'm glad he did because if I was turned off by first few minutes, I don't think I would've checked Shawn and Jonas' music again because I wan't into this kind of music at the time I first watched this video.
ME TOO!!! HELL IS... was the song that got me hooked... Jonas kicks in, and you get goosebumps... then Shawn kicks in and hypnotizes you with that blazing tranquility... from another dimension. AND there you are ... completely blown away!!! smiles:)
This is the video that cost me 3 grand. One minute, I'm watching Jonas playing his solo, then the next, I'm opening a box from Status-Graphite with a Hellborg signature bass in it. That is a sweet freakin' axe, lemme tell ya.
shawn lane, among all the greats that hopefully, i can reach his ability if not close maybe at least 10% would even be sufficient but of course, time is the enemy.
From what album is this song? I recently bought "Good people in times of evil" the other day, have to say that it must be the best buy i've ever done..
You can find a studio version on Michael Shrieve's album "Two Doors", and the track is called "Deep Umbra". Hellborg, and Lane only play on the first nine tracks on the album however. You can also find a live version of Hell is Other People on the album "Personae".
yeah, the 2 doors album has a really good version. i find the personae album a little slow and calculated. still great though. out of the studios i like temporal analogs the best.

Look guys I appreciate your suggestions, but trying to prove to me that Shawn wasn't robotic with 2 or 3 pieces is not gonna do it. Suggest an entire album that's as good as the Trio in San Francisco. I know, that was 3 guitarist, but if Shawn plays an entire album as well as any of those 3, maybe I'll purchase it and give him another chance. Otherwise you sound like a bunch of Gen X death cultists like those Hippie generationers who can't accept Hendrix has been surpassed by many.
no one is trying to prove anything to you, and you don't have to give him another chance, but you should pull your head out of your ass, you and your worthless opinion are not the center of anyones universe except your own...and keep listening to all the people that idolize him like P. Gilbert and S. Morse and everyone else your listening to
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
nick, it depends on what you prefer. I prefer MacLaughlin's, DeLucia's and of course Django's explosive style to Lane's "run through the piece", style. I like speed with melodicism and phrasing, but explosive dramatic short bursts and flurries type quickness speed rather than a marathon. That's just my preference. Lane's stuff interests me for a listen or two, then never again, really.
KInd of like Michael Angelo Batio. The music doesn't breathe, too robotic.
Doesn't breathe what? Air? Too robo huh? Listen to these 2 if you want to be open minded and have an informed opinion (1) Shawns
WATERMELON IN THE EASTER HAY and (2)Hellborg Lane-Paris DVD CLIP, and if you have A.D.D. start it at 4min. though I suggest listening to the whole masterpiece. IT BREATHES!
I dont understand how anyone can think Shawn Lanes music was robotic. I like so called shred music such as vai malmsteen satch etc....but Shawn was on a different level. His playing was never 'lets show aff and play real fast'. You could feel his passion. RIP Shawn
I said it before...SHAWN makes love to a guitar, and when he's done,he sets it down... the guitar lights up a cigarette... basks in the glow, and tells him, "You're the best I've ever had!!!)"...RIP GREAT ONE ur misd
on all most every famous guitarist there are bad comments and good coments!but i havent seen a bad comment on LANE.MICHAEL ROMEO-HE IS THE GUITAR MASTER!PAUL GILBERT-when you listen to him you fall to the ground
I am sure she is, but I hope Shawn's mother see's all these nice comments people have left on all his videos and is extremely proud of her son. It has to be tough to watch stuff like this if you are her but I hope it brings her some joy. Shawn was one of not even a handful of people in history that could make you cry with his instrument. First time i heard him it took me a minute to pick my jaw off the floor from just pure technical skill, but that really is secondary to his emotion and feel.
When I first heard this tune, I got so obsessed, I was listening to it all day along. I really mean it, I was listening to it while having shower, while dish washing, while driving, while eating, while working, while shopping etc..., day after day....... And then it started to die off fianlly after a half year, then I heard "Deep Umbra" my obsession with this tune fired up again, I can't get over how amazing Jonas and Shawn are. "Hell Is Other People" = Best 8 minutes in my life.
what incredible musicianship on everyones part. jeff sipe really knows how to accompany other peoples parts with his drumming, especially during some of shawns riffs.
NO ONE EVEN COMES CLOSE! SHAWN ALONE RULES!!! I wish I could thank Buckethead personally for turning me on to SHAWN. He had dedicated a song to SHAWN and proclaimed him "THE GREATEST GUITARIST THAT EVER LIVED!" Buckethead was right...thanks to all...and R.I.P.GREAT ONE!!!
so awesome when he starts soloing. i couldnt help but think that the intensity he showed probably was in part that he, unlike other people, knew his time was going to be cut short. powerful stuff
Three works together so well! Jeff Sipe is such a great drummer.
Buckethead worked with so many other musicians and I personally love his work with Jonas Hellborg the best. "Octave of the Holy Innocents" is such an amazing dark and heavy piece of work and it's done in acoustic! I always love album with Jonas in it. Like Jeff Sipe's "art of the jam"
as i had mentioned before, this is absolutely beautiful. those Formula One pentatonics at 4:58 get me every time! and the D at 5:22...it is amazing how poignant one note can be. masterful playing by three extremely gifted individuals.
This is an absolute masterpiece. The interplay between the three is just amazing - Sipe's drumming when Hellborg and Lane are soaring is stonking. Jonas plays with such passion not to mention jaw-dropping heart that I took up bass playing from listening to this song - as for Shawn - I am so glad I came across him - an extraordinary genius.
I truly believe that this is strictly the work of God himself. Shawn was a gift to this planet from some higher power. THE BEST, may he rest in peace. Thank you God!!

This comment has received too many negative votes show
nick, it depends on what you prefer.
The music doesn't breathe, too robotic.
pokbacsi100 3 years ago
I can't understand how you compared Shawn Lane to Michael Angelo Batio.
charanator 3 years ago 2
...but he understands and let's leave it that way :)
11Buckethead11 3 years ago
Yeah it might be better that way :). (All listen Powers of Ten. Please :D)
charanator 3 years ago
Exactly. I think most people dismiss Shawn as merely a robotic speed freak simply because they haven't listened to Powers of Ten.
prvteprts 3 years ago 2
Doesn't breathe what? Air? Too robo huh? Listen to these 2 if you want to be open minded and have an informed opinion (1) Shawns
WATERMELON IN THE EASTER HAY and (2)Hellborg Lane-Paris DVD CLIP, and if you have A.D.D. start it at 4min. though I suggest listening to the whole masterpiece. IT BREATHES!
oilkills 3 years ago
I dont understand how anyone can think Shawn Lanes music was robotic. I like so called shred music such as vai malmsteen satch etc....but Shawn was on a different level. His playing was never 'lets show aff and play real fast'. You could feel his passion. RIP Shawn

Shawn Lane. None better. Ever.

That last solo is awesome. I absolutely love the tone and feel. Hellborg isn't to shoddy on the slap bass either. Great stuff
simlit 3 years ago
I second that, as it is just so awesome.
11Buckethead11 3 years ago 2
I said it before...SHAWN makes love to a guitar, and when he's done,he sets it down... the guitar lights up a cigarette... basks in the glow, and tells him, "You're the best I've ever had!!!)"...RIP GREAT ONE ur misd

on all most every famous guitarist there are bad comments and good coments!but i havent seen a bad comment on LANE.MICHAEL ROMEO-HE IS THE GUITAR MASTER!PAUL GILBERT-when you listen to him you fall to the ground
petar870602 3 years ago

And Shawn Lane......... whatta master!!

as i had mentioned before, this is absolutely beautiful. those Formula One pentatonics at 4:58 get me every time! and the D at 5:22...it is amazing how poignant one note can be. masterful playing by three extremely gifted individuals.

''Hell is Other people'' is the same as ''Deep umbra'' isnt it? like ''Stellar Rays'' that shawn renamed ''Time is the enemy'' right?

This is an absolute masterpiece. The interplay between the three is just amazing - Sipe's drumming when Hellborg and Lane are soaring is stonking. Jonas plays with such passion not to mention jaw-dropping heart that I took up bass playing from listening to this song - as for Shawn - I am so glad I came across him - an extraordinary genius.

He was in McLaughlin's 2nd/3rd Mahavishnu lineup.
He also did a lot of duet albums with McLaughlin.
There are plenty of them online. Just type in Hellborg McLaughlin in the youtube search window! :)
