Just rollered the roof of my T25 prior to fitting a Devon roof, easy job, used Rust-oleum gloss white, didnt thin down but if you do it is VERY important to use a mineral based thinner. Keep roller loaded and to finish just roll with just the weight of the roller to eliminate any air bubbles. :)
I just started my rustoleum car today. Lots of orange peel, but I'll be sanding that out before applying another coat. Seems like it's going to be a pretty decent paint job. Definitely much better than before, looked like it had skin cancer. Cheers. Nice job by the way nice and white.
No - much harder work if you do that. It might sound logical but you'll end up losing at least two two layers in the flatting back if you apply too much whereas light flatting between coats helps maintain a level finish without taking off too much.
Ok, everyone to his own way of doing things, i think however its best to mask a vehicle up before painting (even small bits) with a good extractor fan and mask there are no issues. i suppose using a roller is good say if you are on a camp site with time to kill and just fancy doing a bit to your camper. I think i´ll stick to my trusty garage and excellent finish with my equipment.
Thanks for this fellas - had read about this on a forum and made copious notes, it's excellent to see the technique in action - I may give it a go on my maroon T25 soon.
Thank you for posting this and for the web links. Thinking of re-painting my VW T25 when the weather improves. I was thinking of paying for it to be sprayed, but after seeing this I might give rolling a go!
i was so impressed with this video,i decided to roller paint my new aston martin vantage, its full of runs, flies and missed patches, but i think it looks fab,the main dealer told me its now worth about 250 quid,(the idiot)
Sure - spraying IS always a better finish but this is for those without a sprayer who don't want mess and having to use twice as much paint. You also get to drive it away within two hours.
The best paint to use is Rust-oleum Combicolor. which you can thin with white sprit. Also don't forget to flat the paint. I would say flat down down after each cost. takes longer but you get a much better finish.
Rustoleum combicolor and white spirit. Please read the instructions at the 80/90 VW site in the WIKI (body section) on painting your wagon for £50. It is as informative as I could make it. Theres also a huge thread explaining how it was done and examples of others that have followed suit. It does NOT look like artex 0 the finish is astounding (grin).
Thanks for the effort and advice. Very useful.

Despite being a fan of painting with a roller, to do this job in almost direct sunlight is a dumb idea... it's almost a shot in your own foot!

Wouldnt it make sense to put enough coats to then sand to smooth finish? Just a thought.

If it works for you then excellent. Less masking too. Why are people so negative about this??

Whats the biggest roller brush size you can get.. ?
darkeneddreams 3 years ago
The small standard ones are more than big enough.

How long does it take to paint? Looks like an awful lot of rolling! And how on earth do you paint intricate areas?
darkeneddreams 3 years ago
Put it this way, you can do one side of the van in under ten minutes :)

It IS Rustoleum - read video description.

If you want to get rid of orange peel, use a mohair roller!
