I agree that Hollywood has demonized Richard Nixon. When you watch "Nixon" and "Frost versus Nixon" it's as if they didn't bother to read his letters, or talk to his family, or anything.
In reality, Richard Nixon was a very warm and kind man- not a monster.
I ESPECIALLY WITH TODAYS "LEADERS" WISH WE COULD HAVE PRESIDENT NIXON BACK! SO MANY REASONS...... JUST THINK ONE THAT TOUCHES ALL. A POSSIBLE CURE TO CANCER!!
Richard Nixon was human. Humans are flawed. I don't agree with many of his beliefs, but he was a good man - like every other person who could take on the burden of the Presidency.
What a moving eulogy from clearly a man of great compassion and integrity. If Bob Dole had so much respect and admiration for Richard Nixon, I think it speaks volumes about the achievements and high attainments of Nixon. If a person can be judged by the friends he has, Bob Dole says it all.
@FrsBigeasy Bob Dole was the last Republican who ran for the presidency that I supported. 1996 was the last presidential election in which I was a Republican. I was 16 and could not vote, but I was enthusiastic for his ticket. I could not stand Clinton. I thought he was a liar and a phony. But what turned me away from the party was the political witch hunt that occurred with the impeachment hearings. I found that circus extremely partisan and smacked of Watergate in reverse.
If B.Dole spoke w/this conviction, certitude&intelligence, he'dve done better in 96. Instead we got wishy-washy mumbler falling off stage?? It dont add up? Is it t/pressure,handlers & advisors that dont let a candidate like Dole b himself? Clearly B.Dole is a smart man, not just because of this type of speech, but he did so much in his life as well. Too bad the feckless American voters fall for a slick talker like ole "Thong snapper Bill" , or empty suit like "tele-prompter Barack"..
Nixon = absolutely NOT the greatest president of the 20th century. However, I will grant you that history has (deservedly) been kinder to Nixon since his death and people have been paying greater attention to his accomplishments and legacy.
At least you are being fair and balanced. That is a lot more than many people who simply dismiss him as a criminal. Having met the man twice, I have a different opinion.
One thing I like about Nixon is that he's the only former president who declined Secret Service protection. He did this because he felt the taxpayers should not be footed with the cost ($3 milion annually).
@sean2015 He also didn't charge for his speeches and gave his thoughts on any issue freely. He had disdain for the future presidents who charged a fee for their speeches.
@MIKESOWELL Yes. Nixon's one flaw was his lust for power, however to his credit he overcame lust for money and material wealth. I should add that Pat Nixon also waived her Secret Service protection at around the same time as her husband. They did this to save the taxpayers money. I am not shy about speaking to Richard Nixon's personal strengths unpopular though it may be to do this, as many people (as racer500gp points out) objectively dismiss him as a criminal.
@racer500gp You met him? I wish that I had that honor. I was 13 years old when he died. I was devastated, because I had just months earlier began researching him.
Actually, I think Ike was the greatest POTUS of the 20th century. He didn't botch US/Soviet relations like Kennedy, did not escalate Vietnam Like Kennedy/Johnson, didn't botch deseg like Kennedy, etc. Ike presided over peace, the fall of McCarthyism, economic prosperity, and gave us a roadmap with his final speech to the nation that we would do well to follow.
I thought it was President Eisenhower who stabbed his mentor General George Marshall in the back when Senator McCarthy and Senator Jenner denounced Marshall as a traitor during the 1952 American Presidential Election by not defending his former boss. Ike also abandoned his commitment to defend the Philippines in 1939 so he could advance his career in Washington (which indeed turned out to be a great career move). So no, I am not a fan of Eisenhower's unfortunately.
of all the presidents, my personality is closest to Nixon's. I remember this! I watched this on TV, and this was the first time i cried at the TV. Nixon was my first president who died on me. I fell in love with Nixon ever since.
You sir, are a narrow minded want wit Who knows nothing about Richard Nixon, other than what you learned from Hollywood. Richard Nixon was a good man, he was a loving father, a loving grandfather, and loving husband, He got us out of Viet Nam, Opened Relations with China, and pushed peace with Russia. He made a mistake, and I think its time to forgive him. Dick Nixon is not in hell, because God does not see politics, he sees people. and Richard Milhouse Nixon WAS good people.
finally, somebody who knows what they're talking about when it comes to nixon and doesn't let one scandal overshadow all of the good he did for the country!
My oh My! I remember watching this when i was 12! It is permanently burnt into my memory. Nixon was the first president in my life to die. Nixon is now a part of me.
I still remember this, the whole "holy shit, Dole cried a lil bit." It was actually pretty touching to see a guy, weathered by decades of politics to be brought to tears only in the last couple words of his speech over Nixon.
