Core 2 Duo iMacs run Snow Leopard fine. Windows is Windows & I dont see so much y it woud run more stable. But the only thing I can think of is that Apple Provides all the necessary Drivers and software for the iMacs to run everything perfectly right from the Snow Leopard installation disc.
That Airport was the last revision of the mushroom design. I haven't had it since 2006 or when the current square version was introduced because I wanted the Wireless N draft support which this airport didn't have.
I actually miss the look of the old mushroom Airport. I liked the White LED status lights vs the current Green and Amber lights which just don't match the Mac Look. Current design is just boring.
I have a Custom built PC I put together 4 years ago and it runs Windows XP Pro. I don't have a Wireless card on it. I'm using an Asus WL-167g USB Wireless adapter . If everything works like that then you shouldn't have a problem at all with a PC with a Stock Wireless card. Also Works through Ethernet cables too directly from the Base Station as well.
Applications>>Utilities choose Airport Utility. This is assuming you're doing this for the first time, by default your network will be open without any passwords. You'll also see Airport reception at the top right corner. It's all a matter of Passwords and whether you want automatic connection.
For screen share and file share go to System Preferences >>> Sharing. Enable File Sharing, remote Login, and remote management. And tweak whatever options & passwords
Unlike my Old G4 Mini without Airport, I have that connected directly to the Base Station via Ethernet. Works the same except it's linked to the base station. But I can control it wirelessly with other macs that do have airport extreme. You need 10.5 or above to do that.
Sounds good, 2.5GB ram is enough and with SL. Hope it comes with the original disks which has iLife.
Been happy with mine. I will attempt to replace the HDD myself soon. 160GB was huge when I got it almost 4 years ago. And it was. But now it's kinda small and I know it won't last much longer. Been looking at some 500GB or 750GB drives.
It's 1 thing if SL & iLife come preloaded & another if u get the discs.
Mine Originally came with Tiger & iLife 06 included . Since Then I installed Leopard & later I got SL since I qualified for the $29 upgrade.
If U don't get the Original discs or SL. U should be eligable for the $29 SL upgrade since Its already preloaded. Don't know how the cheap upgrade goes in the UK though!!
I just ordered a 500GB Western Digital HDD. I will do it myself & it will be the first time I open up my iMac. This is where my old iBook will come in handy as I follow along with videos online on how to do it. Hope I don't screw it up.
@Flemse911 i agree... i mean pcs are cool and stuff but its just that the imacs are for entertainment and they are awesome... too bad i cant afford one... but they are cool...

Well, the Airport Extreme Base Station came out in 2001 and Thats what inspired the looks for the iMac G4 that came in 2002. Both which still have looks that were ahead of it's time then and still look modern today.

I actually built a PC a while ago with a 2.8Ghz HT Pentium 4 Prescott Core. I have overclocked to 2.9Ghz. Aside from the Stock 478 Processor fan, I have a high performance (P)Supply , A 120mm Intake fan over the rear vent below the (p)supply, an 80mm exhaust fan on the side panel, a 80mm exhaust fan in a PCI Slot, another 120mm Intake fan in the lower front case, Dual fan HDD Cooler. There's a lot of air movement. How much more you think I can safely overclock with that equipment?
awesome i got my own 20 inch mid 2007 alluminum iMac with a 2.0 Ghz processor love it i got windows xp too runs sooo fast and we just got 10 new iMacs at school yay
my school has 1.83GHz with 512MB of ram 4 of them have core duo and the other 4 i think has intel core 2 duo with 1GB of ram they are shitee for some reason but macs rule
THis was back in 2006. I've had the Newer base station for well over a year already hidden under my desk. The one that looks like that Time Capsule. In place, I now have my old Mac Mini G4 there as a backup ( almost like a server.)
512MB & even 1 GB isn't enough these days, probably that explains why the ones at your school runny crappy.. I have 3GB in it now & it's running Leopard. In this video, I think it still had only 1 GB that mine is a Core 2 Duo. I havn't had any troubles.
I don' think so, because Mac OS has it's own Partition. Anything intended to damage a Windows OS shouldn't damage a Mac OS. But I'm not Sure
I use Norton Internet Security 2007. Got it on Amazon for like $18. Just to play safe.
If you don't have Anti Virus on Windows, try AVG Free Edition. Works great against viruses. I just don't use it because it doesn't modify the Firewall.
Unless it is specifically targeted to Mac filesystems, then you would be fucked. As it could access and modify your files. But no such virus exists to my knowledge. But whatever you do don't share folders with the Mac OS and Windows!!! Because then you could have problems!!!!
Well, I'm not following IBM's roadmap of PPC chips in other products but on Macs, The Core 2 Duo Chip on Macs is Faster than any PPC Chip that has ever been applied on Macs.
Now, iMacs Top at 3.06 Ghz with Core 2 DUO and the Mac Pro Tops at 3.2 Ghz with a Quad Core ( 8 Total cores ) Xeon processor.
There's never been a Mac Shipped with PPC that has passed the 3 Ghz barrier.
I'm looking into Logic Pro Studio and i wanted to know if my iMac was fast enough to run it. System requirements were powerPC G5 chips and Intel Core 2 Duo's. I just didn't know what was faster.
I have a 20' Aluminum iMac, 2.0 Ghz Core 2 Duo processor, 3 gig's of RAM, and a 250 GB Hard drive :DDDD
Well, It's not my powermac G5, It's in a graphic design lab at my college. There's 25. They have 2 gigs of Ram. Though I don't remember if it was Dual 2.4 or D 2.5 Ghz. I find that it takes much longer to render effects & filters with photoshop. Even before I maxed out my iMac to 3 gigs, it had 1.5 gigs of Ram & it still Rendered everything faster than the G5's ( only if I didn't have anything else running). I too find that strange.
If only my desktop was sill that clean. I now have the newer airport base Stations, on top of my Mac Mini that sits on the Mini Stack External Hard Drive. I got rid of the mushroom but I liked it's looks.
After 1 minute into the video, doesn't it look like the New Aluminum iMacs???.
I'm using Bootcamp on my 20" iMac C2D.. But it really really slows down my computer's startup/shutdown time.. I hate bootcamp, and i hate windows even more.. I just run it in VMware if i really need to use it.. Otherwise i just use my beautiful Mac OS X 10.5.1 :)
Not on my system! My laptop's 1.7 Ghz and it's close, but my gaming PC is overclocked to 3.0 GHz and that thing loads really fast, as you can imagine.
Overclocked. um, no thanks. Overclocking is one of the stupidest things you could ever do. It wears out the computer bigtime. I have a non-overclocked Dell Dimension system running at 3GHz.
the mac in the video is an intel mac as its running windows. I know lol, I doubt you can tell me anything about apple, been using macs for 10 years The intel switch was macworld 06 first macs on intel were the iMac and new Macbookpro. at macworld 05 it was announced and steve was running on a Pentium 4 mac prototype
I maybe should have put all new macs use intel core chipsets. I no about them been PowerPC heck I have used macs for 10 years, I have four macs at the moment
The External Drive/ USB & Firewire hub slowed the boot up. In addition, this was running an older version of Boot Camp at the time. I feel it uses less time, Now that it has more memory, updated BC drivers, and XP and OS X is fully updated.

Yep, thats What I have, Stay away from the 1.83 GHz ( the $999 ). Those have integrated graphics. Unlike mine which has the ATI X1600 card. I feel it runs fine with just 1GB. Though, in the future I plan to add an additional 1GB. Because I notice that out of the 1GB, there's only 325 to 498 Mb free. It's just me but I would like to see that I have 800 MB to 1.5 GB free of memory. If it's no rush, I would wait until further on the year because it's likely that Apple will kick in a new iMac
I was wondering why you commented that. Because to my knowledge, I've never heard something like that before. It's just another operating system and Microsoft would probably get into trouble if they restricted what computer you want to install an OS on.
OK, Lets start over again. I didn't install windows XP with the idea of just having it. I have it because I need it. I'm a college student and most of the software That I'm required and provided to use is Windows only. I bought a first Gen Mac Mini in 2005 and it was great, but I was a bit stuck since most of the software I needed was Windows Only. What would be your advise then since You seem to know a better way? Windows sux when Compared to OS X but have no choice but to use it.
My apologies. You do actually have the best way! I'm a Window XP user myself at work; at home, I'm pure Mac. My tone was really just my distaste/dislike of Microsoft, and not you the user. Again, I understand the need. And truly, it was a smart and the correct business move for Apple since it wants to increase its desktop market share. Peace.
Don't fully understand what u mean. All I can say is ( If I had to choose between Mac OS X , Windows XP, And Vista. I would Choose Mac OS X.
If I had to choose between Win XP and Win Vista. I would choose Windows XP.
Vista has too many compatability issues, bugs, and under-development. There is really nothing revolutionary in Vista. I am just waiting for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard to come out which has countless new features and a whole new look..
Jeeze, I never would of thought that a video consisting of my iMac booting was going to be my most viewsed upload. I didn't even think that this would of passed 500 views.
i have a toshiba A120 laptop, 768ram and 2ghz Celeron M processor, but i was wondering if i can buy a Core2 Duo and put it in to replace the Celeron M?? wb
Anything over a Celeron will do. But I don't know if the Pin form factor of the Core 2 Duo chip is the same as the celeron. Plus, since this is a more powerful chip, I don't know if the heatsink and cooling fans on the laptop are enough to support. U gotta do some H/W there!!!
o cos i rele want one as i wanna speed up me lappy, cos i dunno how much upgradin to 1gb 512mb will chnge the speed. Jw is it a good laptop, i mean like 7/10? and btw wood i be able to if i bort a better cooler? cos i leaving skool in may so gettin a job :D
No, I usually sit at my desk for computing and I don't watch many videos from distance either. They seem small next to the 20 inch at the store but when you but them on your desk, they seem bigger. I would of liked the 20 inch but price was more of an issue and desktop space. With the extra money, I got myself THX certified speakers, some apps, at the end, it all compensates. I have a Square 19 inch LCD and this 17 inch widescrean feels bigger.
do you have any problems with viruses embedding themselves on the external drive from the mac and then being active on xp? because a lot of mac users dont use a virus shield.
While running OS 10, no. Because I use Intego Virus Barrier which is awsome. No viruses yet. The External drive, I have it under the Mac OS Extended Journaled format which is the same format as the iMac. So it doesn't work when I boot XP. But I while have to reformat it soon so that way I could. I bought the New Airport Base Station, I have Norton Internet Security on XP. Theres no way for anyone to get in either way.
If You're Running tiger, Just go to Spotlight and Search Aqua. You will find those wallpapers there. Then (( COPY )) the file to a flash drive.
When You boot XP, Open the flash drive ( Or CD RW ) and transfer the wallpaper to (( MY Pictures )) in My Documents. Once the Files are in My Pictures, when You go choose your wallpaper, the Aqua Picture will be in the list of wallpapers.
I hate XP, Only use it for some college apps. Though when I do use it, I like to make the desktop look like the macs desktop theme alittle. Makes me somewhat feel like I'm still in the Macworld.
then get one treat your self my paents got me the mac mini core duo 1.83ghz its so fast 7-9 sec boot up time i love it ill never go back to windows its perfect for me
The screen itself is 17 inches. Diagnally. It feels much larger though but its that widescreen deal. I have a 19 inch square LCD that I used for my mac Mini and the picture seems smaller.
Thats base was actually under My Power PC Mac Mini. I gives the computer a hoveroring look. When The light burns out, I will put a white LED Bulb to match the Mac Theme a little
I hate mac screens !

Whoah isn't that a Power-PC G5 iMac?
Then why does it say its an Intel Mac?
I Swear the all-white ones were only Power-PC, and the silver/chrome and black iMacs were Intel...
Shit I got myself all confused.

Wow you're really out there LOL.. check out a very handy link in the info box & you'll see the specs for yourself.
It all 1st started with White Intel Core Duo iMacs in Early 2006. In Late 2006 Apple Announced them with Core 2 Duo Chips.
Same exact form factor outside as the last iMac G5 version, only with totally different guts inside.

wow, if u think thats fast, i have a 4.6 ghz and it boots wayyyy faster
macboy4556 3 years ago
I actually built a PC a while ago with a 2.8Ghz HT Pentium 4 Prescott Core. I have overclocked to 2.9Ghz. Aside from the Stock 478 Processor fan, I have a high performance (P)Supply , A 120mm Intake fan over the rear vent below the (p)supply, an 80mm exhaust fan on the side panel, a 80mm exhaust fan in a PCI Slot, another 120mm Intake fan in the lower front case, Dual fan HDD Cooler. There's a lot of air movement. How much more you think I can safely overclock with that equipment?

awesome i got my own 20 inch mid 2007 alluminum iMac with a 2.0 Ghz processor love it i got windows xp too runs sooo fast and we just got 10 new iMacs at school yay
brian3393 3 years ago
my school has 1.83GHz with 512MB of ram 4 of them have core duo and the other 4 i think has intel core 2 duo with 1GB of ram they are shitee for some reason but macs rule
and get a new base station i dont like that one
diond408 3 years ago
THis was back in 2006. I've had the Newer base station for well over a year already hidden under my desk. The one that looks like that Time Capsule. In place, I now have my old Mac Mini G4 there as a backup ( almost like a server.)
512MB & even 1 GB isn't enough these days, probably that explains why the ones at your school runny crappy.. I have 3GB in it now & it's running Leopard. In this video, I think it still had only 1 GB that mine is a Core 2 Duo. I havn't had any troubles.

I've got a queation! if we get a virus in while in xp, will it afect the mac software?
VanSneiwder 3 years ago
I don' think so, because Mac OS has it's own Partition. Anything intended to damage a Windows OS shouldn't damage a Mac OS. But I'm not Sure
I use Norton Internet Security 2007. Got it on Amazon for like $18. Just to play safe.
If you don't have Anti Virus on Windows, try AVG Free Edition. Works great against viruses. I just don't use it because it doesn't modify the Firewall.
pokeeto2 3 years ago
Unless it is specifically targeted to Mac filesystems, then you would be fucked. As it could access and modify your files. But no such virus exists to my knowledge. But whatever you do don't share folders with the Mac OS and Windows!!! Because then you could have problems!!!!

What is faster, an Intel Core 2 Duo, or a PowerPC chip?????????????? Someone please answer
Dayrock1 3 years ago
Well, I'm not following IBM's roadmap of PPC chips in other products but on Macs, The Core 2 Duo Chip on Macs is Faster than any PPC Chip that has ever been applied on Macs.
Now, iMacs Top at 3.06 Ghz with Core 2 DUO and the Mac Pro Tops at 3.2 Ghz with a Quad Core ( 8 Total cores ) Xeon processor.
There's never been a Mac Shipped with PPC that has passed the 3 Ghz barrier.
pokeeto2 3 years ago
Okay thanks alot! :D
Dayrock1 3 years ago
U're in better shape than I Am. Recently, I just maxed out my RAM to 3 gigs.
I run Adobe CS3 Photoshop & Illustrator perfectly on this older 17inch.
In a graphic design course I'm taking, I have to use a Dual 2.4 Ghz G5 Power Mac and it runs Photoshop & Illustrator much more slowly.
pokeeto2 3 years ago
Wow that's crazy, i wonder why that stuff runs faster on your iMac than your Power Mac :P.
Maybe it's your 3 gig's of RAM.
I noticed everything run's a lot faster since i upgraded RAM.
It usually baselines at 1 gig. All that headroom really makes a difference. I opened all apps and couldn't max out RAM usage lol.
Dayrock1 3 years ago
Well, It's not my powermac G5, It's in a graphic design lab at my college. There's 25. They have 2 gigs of Ram. Though I don't remember if it was Dual 2.4 or D 2.5 Ghz. I find that it takes much longer to render effects & filters with photoshop. Even before I maxed out my iMac to 3 gigs, it had 1.5 gigs of Ram & it still Rendered everything faster than the G5's ( only if I didn't have anything else running). I too find that strange.
pokeeto2 3 years ago
Yeah i know lol. I didn't mean to say yours.
That's still pretty suprizing though, not what i would expect.
Dayrock1 3 years ago
lol my brother uses that on illustrator and crap on his 1.8ghz imac g5 with 512mb of ram hahah

If only my desktop was sill that clean. I now have the newer airport base Stations, on top of my Mac Mini that sits on the Mini Stack External Hard Drive. I got rid of the mushroom but I liked it's looks.

Quinoky 4 years ago 2
It is slow because Microsoft is slow....
backwalnut 4 years ago
How much RAM do you have? I heard bootcamp runs really fast with 2 or more Gigs.

I have 2GB of RAM.. Still slows down my Mac (which is running 10.5.2 already).

lol it boots faster on the Mac than it does on a Windows Machine.
MacNerd1239 4 years ago
Not on my system! My laptop's 1.7 Ghz and it's close, but my gaming PC is overclocked to 3.0 GHz and that thing loads really fast, as you can imagine.
luckyhalo 4 years ago
Overclocked. um, no thanks. Overclocking is one of the stupidest things you could ever do. It wears out the computer bigtime. I have a non-overclocked Dell Dimension system running at 3GHz.
MacNerd1239 4 years ago
But how much did it cost you? The one i overclocked was 2.7 originally so it's not that big of a jump.
luckyhalo 4 years ago
About....2,000?
Specs are:
1GB of RAM
149GB HD
3GHz Intel Pentium 4
MacNerd1239 4 years ago
Is the Pentium 4 a dual core? (I don't really pay attention to intels)
luckyhalo 4 years ago
Not this one. I think a few years later they made one.
MacNerd1239 4 years ago
I don't know why but all single cores have high clocks. But because they only have one core they are slower than dual cores (most of the time)
luckyhalo 4 years ago
okay you have never been a mac user here, all macs use intel core 2 duo
Rjnicko 4 years ago
nope not all now all of them.
the ones that are being made now are but back in 2005 and before they were being made with powerPC chips
HackerTHATSME 3 years ago
the mac in the video is an intel mac as its running windows. I know lol, I doubt you can tell me anything about apple, been using macs for 10 years The intel switch was macworld 06 first macs on intel were the iMac and new Macbookpro. at macworld 05 it was announced and steve was running on a Pentium 4 mac prototype
Rjnicko 3 years ago
I maybe should have put all new macs use intel core chipsets. I no about them been PowerPC heck I have used macs for 10 years, I have four macs at the moment

XP is a slow boot up
wacko506 4 years ago
The External Drive/ USB & Firewire hub slowed the boot up. In addition, this was running an older version of Boot Camp at the time. I feel it uses less time, Now that it has more memory, updated BC drivers, and XP and OS X is fully updated.
OSX Boots up in about 19 to 21.5 seconds.

ok kool, i thought since the vid was posted a wee while ago the updates and so would help, and thanks for replying!

How does that machine run? I am thinking about getting the 17", 2GHz, with 1GB of RAM. Is that what this one is? If it is let me know how it runs.
MacNerd1239 4 years ago
Yep, thats What I have, Stay away from the 1.83 GHz ( the $999 ). Those have integrated graphics. Unlike mine which has the ATI X1600 card. I feel it runs fine with just 1GB. Though, in the future I plan to add an additional 1GB. Because I notice that out of the 1GB, there's only 325 to 498 Mb free. It's just me but I would like to see that I have 800 MB to 1.5 GB free of memory. If it's no rush, I would wait until further on the year because it's likely that Apple will kick in a new iMac

oh...i thought running vista is not leagal.
maybe its a mistake...
but...i really did heard someone saying "install vista on mac is not leagal."
until i went the apple's store...
yuzuhiko112 4 years ago
I was wondering why you commented that. Because to my knowledge, I've never heard something like that before. It's just another operating system and Microsoft would probably get into trouble if they restricted what computer you want to install an OS on.
pokeeto2 4 years ago
Why would it not be legal if XP is? The only operating system that is legal to install is OS X on a PC. Besides that you can do whatever you want.
MacNerd1239 4 years ago
I made a mistake in what I said, it says legal, should say illegal.
MacNerd1239 4 years ago
That was so f***ing depressing! You don't need that crap in your machine!
I understand Apple's business objective of getting PC users to switch, but still...sickening!
i847 4 years ago
OK, Lets start over again. I didn't install windows XP with the idea of just having it. I have it because I need it. I'm a college student and most of the software That I'm required and provided to use is Windows only. I bought a first Gen Mac Mini in 2005 and it was great, but I was a bit stuck since most of the software I needed was Windows Only. What would be your advise then since You seem to know a better way? Windows sux when Compared to OS X but have no choice but to use it.
pokeeto2 4 years ago
My apologies. You do actually have the best way! I'm a Window XP user myself at work; at home, I'm pure Mac. My tone was really just my distaste/dislike of Microsoft, and not you the user. Again, I understand the need. And truly, it was a smart and the correct business move for Apple since it wants to increase its desktop market share. Peace.

Anitalouisa 4 years ago
bravo! you made it
well, running xp is leagl
but vista is not.
yuzuhiko112 4 years ago
Don't fully understand what u mean. All I can say is ( If I had to choose between Mac OS X , Windows XP, And Vista. I would Choose Mac OS X.
If I had to choose between Win XP and Win Vista. I would choose Windows XP.
Vista has too many compatability issues, bugs, and under-development. There is really nothing revolutionary in Vista. I am just waiting for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard to come out which has countless new features and a whole new look..

i have a toshiba A120 laptop, 768ram and 2ghz Celeron M processor, but i was wondering if i can buy a Core2 Duo and put it in to replace the Celeron M?? wb
Rollzy2006 4 years ago
Anything over a Celeron will do. But I don't know if the Pin form factor of the Core 2 Duo chip is the same as the celeron. Plus, since this is a more powerful chip, I don't know if the heatsink and cooling fans on the laptop are enough to support. U gotta do some H/W there!!!

do u find that the 17" is too small sometimes??
pikey1300 4 years ago
No, I usually sit at my desk for computing and I don't watch many videos from distance either. They seem small next to the 20 inch at the store but when you but them on your desk, they seem bigger. I would of liked the 20 inch but price was more of an issue and desktop space. With the extra money, I got myself THX certified speakers, some apps, at the end, it all compensates. I have a Square 19 inch LCD and this 17 inch widescrean feels bigger.
pokeeto2 4 years ago
do you have any problems with viruses embedding themselves on the external drive from the mac and then being active on xp? because a lot of mac users dont use a virus shield.
alexhinksman 5 years ago
While running OS 10, no. Because I use Intego Virus Barrier which is awsome. No viruses yet. The External drive, I have it under the Mac OS Extended Journaled format which is the same format as the iMac. So it doesn't work when I boot XP. But I while have to reformat it soon so that way I could. I bought the New Airport Base Station, I have Norton Internet Security on XP. Theres no way for anyone to get in either way.

how do you get that mac aqua tiger wallpaper for windows xp
8en2006 5 years ago
If You're Running tiger, Just go to Spotlight and Search Aqua. You will find those wallpapers there. Then (( COPY )) the file to a flash drive.
When You boot XP, Open the flash drive ( Or CD RW ) and transfer the wallpaper to (( MY Pictures )) in My Documents. Once the Files are in My Pictures, when You go choose your wallpaper, the Aqua Picture will be in the list of wallpapers.
