Todd's doctor is the one who walks up to someone, slaps them and says "You're going to die stupid, you have this disease and there's only one cure I can give you" then attempts to force you to take it, then whether you take it or not he/she just walks away never to be seen again....unloving, uncaring, cold, and distant...BOY WHAT A SAVIOR!
if a doctor made me ill to begin with, he sure as hell better fix me. sounds like a good part of the world has grounds for a class action lawsuit against god.
quite cluelessly, friel reveals the ancient 2000-year-old christian device of convincing someone that they are 'terminally ill,' destined for suffering, should be afraid, etc.etc. "... but wait, there's HOPE for you yet!!"... and then proceeding to sell him the 'cure' for 'his sickness.'
"I happen to be one of those guys who actually embraces words like 'sin,' and 'hell,' and 'anger,' 'wrath,' and 'repent.' So how is it I like those words.. and other guys... don't like those words..."
--
time and time again it's shown that if you let a fool run his mouth, it won't be long before he incriminates himself on charges of idiocy.
Good points Todd. But do you really believe the commandments are that important? Cause whenever I ask why Christians don't care about the fourth commandment (Exodus 20:8-11) I'm told that the law doesn't apply to us after Jesus nailed it to the cross.
What a crock of shit! The reason why Todd Friel is so pissed at Rob Bell is because Todd makes his living scaring the Hell out of people (literally). This is why I hate religion--it's all based on fear. Fuck your god, Todd!
I wish this cretin would try to "witness" to me I would rip his fundy ass a new one, spiritually speaking. He is such a coward since he will only push his religion on impresssionable young people.
(contd) they listen, I think they need to SEE the difference its made in YOUR life, seeing is believing.. its ok to say "Well I have told them the truth" and for some tht might get through but In todays society actions speak louder than words, sometimes it has to be a gradual process. I like Todd Friel, Paul washer etc but they expect people to "Get it" and some honestly don't so they need to change their methods maybe?
It's great to have your opinion.. but your opinion isn't what saves people.. how about a Bible verse in context?
Jesus was hated, so were the apostles(who were martyred)... do you read the Scriptures? Persecution isn't just a word.. it happened(happens). In fact, 2 Tim 3:12 says if you really desire to live after God--you will be persecuted. So are you being persecuted? If the world loves you, you better question your methods... if they hate you, you may be doing it right.
@droptozro You know I totally agree with you, Jesus himself said I have not come to bring peace but a sword, members of your own family will hate you because of the Gospel. My point was that some people Just dont get it.. I know this is true because I was one of them. You can preach to them, tell them the truth and tell them about Jesus and what he did for them but they HATE God my own daughters are Atheists and will not listen :(
Yes my wife's family hates us, and my own family is double-minded professing Christians and is friends with the world---so we've been slowly ostracized by them. Her family will not speak with us any longer hardly, and my family I fear may have to be left behind if they don't repent. I know what you mean though... know that other brothers and sisters are dealing with the same. Pray for them fervently and speak with them whenever you may, God Bless you.
@droptozro I feel for you both I really do.. its hard living in a world where you feel like you don't "FIT" every aspect of life is different for a believer its almost like being an ALIEN and an unwanted one at that :)
I recall watching him once in an interview and he said surely the way to convince someone of something is the EXAMPLE u set in ur life and it should reflect wht u believe and he went onto say tht most Christians hes met are Hypocrites and DONT love others. I think the Gospel can be spread to a smaller audience, i.e those who u live and work with in ur daily life so they can SEE how ur life has transformed, how u bear fruit etc. The people u meet in the street dnt know u why wud...(contd)
I have mixed feelings abt this.. I think he's right that as a christian we need to "Spread the Gospel" but to be honest I have seen this kind of evangelism and 9 times out of 10 people will run for the hills rather thn listen. Look at the likes of Christopher Hitchens, I'm sure in his many debates he has heard the Gospel and yet he STILL hates God, no matter how many times he has been told he is a sinner, he is destined for hell, and jesus is the answer he STILL hates him..(contd)
Its not that people dont like those words. we dont like the way there being presented in the bullhorn picket sign group of people. this is a better respine then the bullhorn guy video i will give it that.
I go out where people are to preach the gospel at any opportunity to hopefully "save some". I can't imagine why any true Christian would not have the same heart. At first I did not have the guts, but it did not take long for God to give me courage. Now we go preaching to thousands of people and we do see changed lives, it REALLY happens, so you're too late to say, "don't bother". . Where is your heart for the lost? AWOL? "Go out into all the world and PREACH! From the HOUSETOPS! Mat. 10:27!!!
The thing about Todd Friel, is that he doesn't understand what Rob Bell was saying in his "Bullhorn Guy" video. It's not that he is denying that street preaching is preaching, it's that in our culture today not many people are susceptible to being condemned. Sure, you might get one or two people to listen, but think of all the people that you completely scare away from the faith. Imagine if you that was your first encounter with Jesus. He told us to go and testify our faith, not to condemn.
@Guitar4god33 How does one get scared away from the faith? Don't John 6:44 and Romans 3:10 teach that no one even wants to come to God at all unless the Father draws him or her to Himself?
And as for condemnation, wouldn't Jesus be considered condemning with statements like "Unless you repent, you will perish" (Luke 13:3) and what He told the Pharisees in Matthew 23?
Also just because we can't be face to face with each other and reason in love and truth.
Please please be careful as you lob verbal grenades at each other in the name of Jesus that these posts are incredibly harmful as "tools of evangelism" when the non-believer sees those who claim Christ as unloving and mean spirited.
you need to quit arguing on this comments wall on the way you feel or way others feel/make you feel or motives of others and bring it back to Scripture. Compare what Rob says and Todd says to the Bible. And if what they are saying does not match up throw it out but if it does match up then you need to consider it.
@jdcs1528-Yup thats what i always tell people. no matter what anybody says if it doesn't match the Bible then its garbage. Like Apostle Paul said: If anyone comes to you whether it be an angle from heaven n preaches any other Gospel than the one u have already heard then let him be accursed. Jesus bless
The entire problem with street preachers is the arrogance they possess. It's so pathetic. The reason they all go out and "spread the good news" is they want to be above somebody for once. Between their angry fire sermons are the words "I am better than you are right now. I am more enlightened than you. That is why I am condescending to lecture you."
If you want to bring somebody to Christ, don't be their teacher. Be their friend.
@nofalltoofar So apparently you didnt pay attention to what Mr. Friel was talking about. A person who goes about street preaching is doing the will of God and showing their Love for you. The only ones who fell someone is condescending to lecture you is if you are not at the right place with God and you know you did wrong. Yes street preachers can be your friends but they can be your teachers as well. He teaches for your benefit and yours alone. They testify of Gods love because Jesus did too.
Oh yay, a Calvinist! "You don't like what I'm doing because you are wrong." Your claims that discomfort with IYF ministry reveals a weakness of faith is a very strong claim and one that I think you'll have to defend before the throne of God.
Bullhorn preaching doesn't work. We know it by the fruit it produces. It makes angry or terrified men and women, not loving ones.
As for disagreeing being a sign of weakness, remember what happens to people who put words in God's mouth.
@nofalltoofar When have I put words in God's mouth? And furthermore Jesus did so himself and put forth parables speaking to do such things to call men unto the feast. If you persume to say what is in one man's heart when preaching on the streets then you make yourself as if you were God for only he alone can know each man's heart.
OH and I didn't now that I was a Calvinist. I'm a Christian, but not a Calvinist. I dont even now the guy, if he was a guy
@jonathanokoro35 You are putting words in God's mouth by implying that my discomfort with loud, acidic, arrogant condemnation makes me somehow a worse believer.
You put words in God's mouth when you imply that this is the only correct way to evangelize.
And yes, your idiotic reformed theology is Calvinism. It just goes to show your ignorance. Maybe you should read some more before you go out and condemning others for their unbelief.
@nofalltoofar And there you go again calling people things and putting words in my mouth. I never said it was the incorrect way for evangelism. What I am saying is it is one of the most direct ways. So please use some reading comprehension. And I am not a Calvinist so stop calling me one. And I just read about it and it makes no sense to imply it on me because I said nothing pertaining to that doctrine and you sir are making false accusations. And I never condemed you only corrected you in faith
man the whole point of the nooma dvd is to not concentrate on how god's judgement is comming and how we are all sinners, Rob Bell doesnt say we shouldnt tell people about our religion, this video proves Todd Friel doesnt understand the awesomeness that is Nooma :3
you look pretty cool todd firel...your little spiky x games hair, your blue undershirt /sport coat, your sport commentator like voice...i bet your kids hate you, and i bet you know nothing about yourself...go shoot yourself in the face friel..if yer so interested in the afterlife, blow yer brains out you faggot
Who walks up to someone on the street and ask that?.."can you tell me about the hope that lives within you,"......blah blah blah......I embrace words like personal freedom.....individuality, rational thinking, science. Why is it so important for everyone to beleive in your "fairy tale," your christian MYTHOLOGY. I like mormon mythos better, it's much more entertaining and I kinda like the science fiction aspect. But it's still just a bunc of made up stuff, just like, dare i say it, the bible.
Philippians 1:15-18 It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. The latter do so in love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains. But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.
Geez!! You Christians seem to be the most argumentive, insentive, name calling little children in the world...and you want me to join you? Not bloody likely!
wow, I heard the point and it was a good parable to reveal the deception that is coming upon the whole world. Its called Secular Humanism and the people are swallowing it. The spirit of Emergent Churches is the destroying of scriptural authority! For a time will be when they will not endure sound doctrine, but they will heap up teachers to themselves according to their own lusts, tickling the ear. And they will turn away their ears from the truth and will be turned to myths. (2Ti 4:3-4)
Glory to Bell right? That's too bad Bell has made you believe because the God of scripture is the one who makes man believe. Bell is merely a vessel of the enemy to preach a false jesus and a false gospel. RB's jesus looks nothing like the Jesus of scripture, in fact Bell's jesus looks more like a cross between himself and Gandhi.
let us remember who is the one who judges people... Isnt it GOD. Jesus came to the world to bring peace he didnt even cared to bring RELIGION! People that are fundamentalists like lots that i see and watch out there.
A house cannot be divided by itself Mark 3: 24If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. 26And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand; his end has come." Bell cannot be a vessel of the enemy if i can Still watch a vid of his and feel the Holy Ghost in my body those that Jesus
Of course but your maybe ruins the question... You had to say what you think is the Holy Spirit isn't if you say maybe you are doubting your own statement. Gal 5:22 "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
mentions John 7:38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him." So Rob is an instrument that made me believe in JEsus and i feel that or are you a person who does the unforgivable sin by doing whgat mathew 12:32 says Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.
So against who are you speaking ? Bell of what hes doing id rather be careful how you treat your neighbor since Jesus said treat them as if they were yourself. May God bless YOU!
Rob Bell may be telling people things they like to hear but that in no way means that what he says is true. The biblical standard is the measure by which truth is judged.
If God has prepared and opened the heart of someone to recieve Jesus Christ as lord and savior after hearing the true message and word of God , than we follow up , to disciple, teach, pray, encourage and futhur their knowledge of the gospel.... Amazing when God uses us to spread the Good News.
H= represents Heaven and enternal life. I am the way , the truth and the life. No one comes to the father except thru me.... come to give life to the full , abundant life. thats my outline I use to fall back on to share gospel... i listen, and ask them what do u think it takes to get into heaven. All done with love , tenderness, and kindness. Just a messenger not there to beat people over the head. hopefully the word of God will prick their heart....
FAITH.... f=forgivness, we are sinners and all fall short of the glory of God. A=gods forginess is available to all but not automatic. I=impossible to get saved on our own or works. only through Jesus. T=turn or repent when going wrong way. turn from self and sin and come to Jesus.
I thought greatest commandment is love God with all your heart and the second is love your neighbor. Maybe you define Love as a loud voice pointing out people's flaws. I don't. Love is kind, Love is patient. I think more people respond better to the kind listener than to the bull horn. But that is just my opinion on what works best. Kuddos for you for trying to help save people.
And Rob Bell also needs to read what the Bible says about justification. If you examine Bell's "doctrines", you'll see what he is: a Bhuddist who thinks he's a Christian.
The law lets us know we are totally incapable of fulfilling the righteous and holy requirements of God. Jesus said He did not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it. So the standards of the law are not abolished, as Rob Bell would want them to be. They remain, and will remain forever, as eternal as God Himself. So, salvation is not a checklist, but rather wholly trusting in Jesus, and that He has "checked every check on the list" as it were... Rob Bell needs to know the real Jesus.
Jesus was killed because He purposed before the world began to die for the sins of His people. And the very first sermons that Jesus preached were the same ones His cousin were preaching- "Repent, for the kingdom of God is at hand".
Salvation is by grace through faith that is not of ourselves (Eph. 2:8-9). The gospel(good news) is only good news when it's held up against the bad news of God's righteous requirements. The law was our tutor and steward until Christ came.
You lack discernment 1. If you think that Rob Bells theology is sound. and 2. If you can't see that this guys is correcting false doctrine as Paul and Jesus did
For one thing, if you think this guy is ANYTHING like Jesus (or even Paul), you're sadly mistaken. I'm sure he DOES "embrace words like anger, hell, and law." What a Pharisee. He claims to love, but loving someone with a secret agenda isn't love at all. I especially hate the way he uses sarcasm to degrade things that he disagrees with. I would like to see him try "loving" a Muslim. He has no mercy. He has no since of God's grace. I shutter to think of all the people lost because of this man.
Something is seriously wrong if you see this pharisee as anything close to Jesus or even Paul for that matter. I'm not a big fan of Rob Bell, but he isCOMPLETELY right when he says that it isn't enough to leave a bible tract in a phone booth and say its enough. Or to knock on a stranger's door to tell them they are going to burn for eternity. You have to reflect God's love in a genuine way.Don't tell me that it doesn't work, because I've seen that work many more times than this clown's method..
All street preachers are hypocrites, just like Todd Friel...see i have nothing against god, in which i have no belief of, its just his followers i cant stand...if you want to believe in god, more power to you, all i ask if for believers not to push their beliefs in my face
Read Matthew 6:5...keep your prayers to yourself and do not be like the hypocrites who preach on street corners...moral of the story, keep your thoughts between you and god...but dont take my word for it, i'm an atheist
And?...this is the Bible saying that your faith should be between yourself and god, and you shouldnt preach on street corners...it nullifies everything Todd Friel says in the video, he's a fraud
Where do you think Jesus was when he was preaching and how do you think the Bible expects you to spread your faith (the Great Commission)? Matthew 6:5 addresses those using prayer to make themselves look great. God is the only one who should receive praise.
that's right,Jesus called the pharisee's hypocrites, vipers, wolves and ect.the pharisees missed the whole point of God's laws and the pharisees were proud of their self righteousness.
in the old Testament Job was proud of his self righteousness and God removed his hand of protection away from Job and allowed satan to attack him.the minute Job repented and prayed for the two that insulted God's character God restored him with twice as much that he had before.
Who were the ones that Jesus really condemned...seems to me it was the hypocrites...I really cant find any other people he really condemned....and to all there was mercy and forgiveness....sorry sir I cant buy your take.
Matthew 23...all of it. Jesus never condemned anyone? Jesus is God the Son, has been with God since the beginning(John 1:1-5)...Sodom? Gomorrah?(Gen 19:24) The Earth(Gen 6,7,8) "There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."(Rom 8:1)
Jesus has, and will comdemn those who don't believe.
I was addressing Jesus as a man, when he came down to show man how to live. Jesus does not want us to be in the business of condemning others, that is God's job.
There's a difference between discernment and condemnation...condemnation IS God's job. Discerning sheep and wolves is part of our duty, empowered by the Holy Spirit. Pointing out false hood is NOT condemnation.
I'm not talking about a soul count. Jeremiah never had one convert, but he still told Israel to repent and turn to God, which he did out of love because he didn't want to see them go to hell but be restored. He tried not to preach because no one was listening but he said couldn't because the word of God was like fire his mouth. And I suggest you read the new testament again and pay close attention to Jesus
Jeremiah was also under the old law, buddy. and I suggest that YOU pay attention to Jesus. He gained the trust and faith of his followers by serving them and loving them. ACTUALLY loving them. Not because they wanted another check off of a list like the Pharisees. They are the hypocrites. Like this guy
No. Both groups are God's enemies, but Jesus died for Atheists, and if they put their faith in Him and repent, they will be forgiven. Satan and the Demons will not be redeemed.
You are good as a result of the forgiveness and repentance. God's standard of goodness is higher than ours...Jesus is THE way, THE truth, and THE life...
I assume the people in this video believe God is the father of all creation...if not...who is the creator? The Bible says "For God so loved the world"...so I am asking if you believe what the Bible says.
only those that trust in Jesus alone for their salvation is saved and because they believe they manifest this in good works.only those that do not trust in Jesus or those that believe in multiple paths to God is lost
people that do not trust in Jesus alone is not God's children at all but are instead considered children of the devil because they do the things their father the devil does.without Jesus there is no remission of sin and everybody sins.Christians sin also but if they are really God's they regret it.ask satan if he is a sinner he will tell you yes and a mighty fine one at that.true followers of Jesus are not perfect by any means, just forgiven by God.
No. All are God's creation. "For God so loved the world.." not, His children. When you receive salvation, you are grafted into the family of God...adopted.
only by Jesus and God loves you so much he sent his only begotten son.John 3:16.Jesus is the only begotten son of God.aside from Jesus there is no other way and without him you remain in God's wrath and you have been judged already.
If you don't repent,God will be out to get you. Joh 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
Don't be too quick to judge a preacher by one sermon. Be even more careful to judge Rob Bell by this one video. At his gatherings at Mars Hill, Rob actually preaches the word in a really balanced way. They just went through Lamentations, and there's no better place to talk about the human condition of Sin. But that doesn't mean he's gonna preach from Revelation when people need to hear the rest of the story first. Just don't be so quick to judge..
The guy's a fucking dickhead. What the fuck is he on about? Hell? What sort of God would send you to hell for some minor transgression? Sounds like a bit of a cunt, this god you're talking about. Maybe there's a better God out there. We need to put out a tender for a new God. See if we can get a better God than this one. One that's not suck an asshole.
Rob Bell isn't anti-repentence! He's anti-bull horn style witnessing. NOOMA: BULLHORN challenges the notion that it is not enough to leave a track in a bathroom stall, or to shout hell to passerbyes from a soap box. Jesus talked about hell more then anyone in the Bible, but he didn't talk about hell the way a bullhorn theologian did. The point of BULLHORN, is to encourage people to put the pamphlets away and witness with your life showing Christ's love.
Here is the problem, we error too far one way or the other. Some believe that God doesn't hate sin, and others believe that God needs help convicting a heart so they put on their armour and swing for the fences. There has to be a genuine connection of love woven with righteousness and neither the bullhorn guy nor the universalist gets it at all.
p.s. Be some what creative with your response next time. This looks like a cheap rip off of a nooma video.
It was supposed to be like a nooma video. It was far greater and much richer because Todd explained the one, true Gospel of Jesus unlike the man-centered, false teachings of RB and his lame nooma videos.
Well if you guys insist on preaching judgment, hate and "hellfire".... please go for it. But consider this:
Whenever Jesus mentioned the words that have been translated into the english word hell, Jesus was talking to the Religious Leaders. Not the average unbeliever.
And also, consider that the Bible says that as you judge, so shall you be judged... and if you are merciful to others, you too will obtain mercy.
One question for ChristianNewsWatch. If a person does not repent of his/her sin and accept Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, what becomes of that person's soul when he dies?
Consider this, if hell is just some garbage dump outside jerusalem, Then no fret evil doers! The condemnation you deserve because the sin against an infinity worthy and good God wont happen because he's just going to stuff you out of existence.
it just blows me away that this guy could find nothing better to do than hate on rob bell, if you know much about bell's ministry you know that he and his church are doing so much to impact the kingdom. with as much money and energy as it took to make this, this dude could have fed some homeless people and talked to them about God and really showed them the LOVE that Christ showed...
It's amazing to me that for someone who seems to be so against Rob Bell, he copies his speaking style and structure. Funny that.
Seems a little harsh to make Rob out to be this marshmallowy, love em but don't tell em type of guy ... considering how many people are coming to faith as a result of God's work through him. Hmmm. And the fact that Mars Hill is not just seeing people discover God but also change the world would lead me to believe that perhaps he should be listened to, not parodied.
Hang on a second. Jesus TOLD us to go out an preach the Gospel to the whole world! Not keep quiet. If you really cared about people you would tell them about the imminent danger that they face!!! The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand but so is Hell. So Jesus said REPENT! In fact he probably shouted it.
At least Todd Friel is telling people what they need to hear and not what they want to hear. Repentance and Trust in Jesus is the way!
Actually our claim as Christians, is that men whom were chosen by God, through His grace, were inspired to write scripture. I realize of course that this is an extraordinary claim to nonbelievers. But if indeed the God of scripture is what scripture claims He is, then trust me He is extraordinary. And if He wanted to reveal Himself, there is no reason for us to think that He would not use extraordinary means. You see it is a matter of faith.
I am a reformed Calvinist Christian but I by no means like nor listen to Todd Friel... I can barely take him seriously. All I see in his words and actions is absolute pride and arrogance. No hint of Biblical humbleness and tenderness. Only an annoying immature narrow minded view of Christ and no regard for true biblical meekness.
He is the perfect example of having your theology perfect and your heart wrong...
And the saddest part of all is Jesus said that our witness to the world is how we as followers of Christ love each other. With all the personal attacks and angry heresy accusations what kind of message are we sending. Are we not just shooting ourselves in the trying to argue about how or how not to love people? Why is being "right" so important. Cant we all agree that loving people is the point both videos make and what we are all about? So lets stop taking sides and just simply love people
This video makes me sad. What this guy is saying is to "love" someone is to not want to them to go to hell so you tell them about it. Rob is saying that you "love" someone by being Jesus to them and inviting them to into a dynamic relation that is vibrant and hopeful and moving. Then when they see how attractive that is you share why you have this hope. Becoming a Christian is not a formula. Its not Be Scared + Say Words = Heaven. And Heaven is not the goal for Christians. God is.
Perhaps you serve a different God than the God of the Bible?
The God of the Bible is one of Love Mercy Grace Joy, Light & Faith BUT also one of Wrath, Judgement, Truth, Holiness, Righteousness, & Repentance.
Sounds like you may be reading John 3:17 without reading John 3:18...
The world is already condemned. God's Wrath is upon sinful men (John 3:36). To preach anything partially right or entirely different is kindly leading people to a misrepresentation of the true and Living GOD.
"It's been my experience, that all the hellfire preachers drive people away from God!"
Thats what its suppose to do!
Yea and when someone does come along and preach the true gospel the church divides.
Jesus talked more about hell than everyone else in the bible combined. have you never read that many of his disciples walked no more with him because of the things he said?
Jesus talked about Gehenna.... the rubbish pile outside of Jerusalem at that time... He told the hypocritical judgmental Pharisees that they would not escape Gehenna & in AD 70 when the temple and Jerusalem were destroyed, the Pharisees (and many others) were killed and disposed of in Gehenna!
Hell spoken of in the Bible does not hold the same meanings nowadays as it did back then.
Very little truth remains in the modern day church system, apostasy is rampant!
Even with Jesus, the GOOD NEWS, preceded the Bad News. Mark 1:14-15, the first bit is the Good News that the Kingdom had come near and the Law and Prophets were being fulfilled. Then, in light of that, the bad news comes in, Israel is not ready, so repent and believe in this news so you might be saved.
I also think Friel doesn't understand Bell at all. It is a shame. I think if Friel went out to coffee with Bell and ACTUALLY listened to him all the way through, he might like Bell.
I don't think there's a bad news part that precedes the good news. That's where God's "moral law" comes in. It was to show them how to emulate God, by NOT doing these things. Therefore it showed them what sin was. However, the law itself was a Gracious Gift. The law was GOOD NEWS, the Bad News came after, when they realized how far from accomplishing this they were.
Jesus used it more times than every one else in the bible combined....and he is that kind of street preacher. He's also that God of the old testiment....
Well those are all good points and I think that is what Rob Bell was getting at and saying that your first doctor is irrational. That is who Rob was talking about. And yes, Rob talks about sin too. But so many people are more concerned with going through life only trying not to sin when they should be striving for certain virtues that when followed would prevent you from sinning. It is becoming aware that the happiest way to live is living without sin and yes, loving others.
he goes out. WOW! Even the people he doesn't get to pray with.. How much more dispositioned do you think they are to accepting Christ vs. the people who heard from the bullhorn, turn or burn? The beauty of Christianity, is that it proclaims a personal God, one we can know personally. Let's emulate him in all ways. Let's be personal with people, not just treat them as sheep moving through the streets to the next slaughter.
I have a friend, he attends a school called the School of Urban Missions. Every Friday, he and his class mates go into the streets of Oakland, and they preach Christ. With a bullhorn? No... They walk up to individuals.. Talk with them.. They don't have a bunch of small talk, because neither the person talking, or the person being talked to has time. It's right to the point. They use personal testimony, they give the gospel, and are friendly. My friend says he get's to pray with people EVERY TIME
I like doctor reason.. And I agree that there's a bad news part that precedes the good news.. The question is, is bullhorning both those in one breath the best way to open that conversation? I mean, even if you "catch" one, you aren't really letting the rest slip from the net for now, you're actually chasing them away. The next time they hear the gospel, it won't be easier for them to accept, it will make it harder, because they're already predispositioned against it.
i understand that you should stop the blind man when he is about to fall off the cliff but the point is he is not at the end of the cliff.. i'm a hindu and i want to know how you would react if i came to you and said "my god is the god almighty and if u dont pray to him like we do you will rot in hell"? Please do tell your answer to this question
They did not like to hear it then. That's why the crucified Jesus. I'm sure they don't like to hear it now. That's why most of them will join the "One World Religion" were such "pleasant" gospel will be the main course.
he preached that repentance from sin (baptism of water) and turning to Christ (baptism in the Spirit) are the only way to the Father (therefore the Kingdom).
The problem is that people know Jesus preached about Kingdom but they put the phrase 'Kingdom of heaven' in their own worldly understanding.
To add to Todd's analogy, I wouldn't want a doctor who told me I was going to die and sold me a false cure when I was healthy the whole time. What should we call this doctor?? How about Dr.Scam or Dr. Todd Friel?
What a douchebag.
odinata 4 months ago
Todd's doctor is the one who walks up to someone, slaps them and says "You're going to die stupid, you have this disease and there's only one cure I can give you" then attempts to force you to take it, then whether you take it or not he/she just walks away never to be seen again....unloving, uncaring, cold, and distant...BOY WHAT A SAVIOR!

quite cluelessly, friel reveals the ancient 2000-year-old christian device of convincing someone that they are 'terminally ill,' destined for suffering, should be afraid, etc.etc. "... but wait, there's HOPE for you yet!!"... and then proceeding to sell him the 'cure' for 'his sickness.'
immoral poison.

I like Todd Friel, Paul washer etc but they expect people to "Get it" and some honestly don't so they need to change their methods maybe?
TheChrissy48 1 year ago
@TheChrissy48
If the world loves you, you better question your methods... if they hate you, you may be doing it right.
droptozro 11 months ago

I have mixed feelings abt this.. I think he's right that as a christian we need to "Spread the Gospel" but to be honest I have seen this kind of evangelism and 9 times out of 10 people will run for the hills rather thn listen. Mat. 10:27!!!
GregS4Jesus 1 year ago
The thing about Todd Friel, is that he doesn't understand what Rob Bell was saying in his "Bullhorn Guy" video. It's not that he is denying that street preaching is preaching, it's that in our culture today not many people are susceptible to being condemned. Sure, you might get one or two people to listen, but think of all the people that you completely scare away from the faith. Imagine if you that was your first encounter with Jesus. He told us to go and testify our faith, not to condemn.
Guitar4god33 1 year ago
@Guitar4god33 How does one get scared away from the faith? Don't John 6:44 and Romans 3:10 teach that no one even wants to come to God at all unless the Father draws him or her to Himself?
And as for condemnation, wouldn't Jesus be considered condemning with statements like "Unless you repent, you will perish" (Luke 13:3) and what He told the Pharisees in Matthew 23?
ChrisHobeck 1 year ago
this whole discourse makes me sad.

No wonder WotM gets its ass kicked in debates.
nofalltoofar 1 year ago
@nofalltoofar So apparently you didnt pay attention to what Mr. Friel was talking about. A person who goes about street preaching is doing the will of God and showing their Love for you. The only ones who fell someone is condescending to lecture you is if you are not at the right place with God and you know you did wrong. Yes street preachers can be your friends but they can be your teachers as well. He teaches for your benefit and yours alone. They testify of Gods love because Jesus did too.

@jonathanokoro35
As for disagreeing being a sign of weakness, remember what happens to people who put words in God's mouth.
nofalltoofar 1 year ago
@nofalltoofar When have I put words in God's mouth? And furthermore Jesus did so himself and put forth parables speaking to do such things to call men unto the feast. If you persume to say what is in one man's heart when preaching on the streets then you make yourself as if you were God for only he alone can know each man's heart.
OH and I didn't now that I was a Calvinist. I'm a Christian, but not a Calvinist. I dont even now the guy, if he was a guy
jonathanokoro35 1 year ago
@jonathanokoro35 You are putting words in God's mouth by implying that my discomfort with loud, acidic, arrogant condemnation makes me somehow a worse believer.
You put words in God's mouth when you imply that this is the only correct way to evangelize.
And yes, your idiotic reformed theology is Calvinism. It just goes to show your ignorance. Maybe you should read some more before you go out and condemning others for their unbelief.
Minister through friendship. Not from soapboxes.

And Rob Bell also needs to read what the Bible says about justification. If you examine Bell's "doctrines", you'll see what he is: a Bhuddist who thinks he's a Christian.
philroutszong 2 years ago
The law lets us know we are totally incapable of fulfilling the righteous and holy requirements of God. Jesus said He did not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it. So the standards of the law are not abolished, as Rob Bell would want them to be. They remain, and will remain forever, as eternal as God Himself. So, salvation is not a checklist, but rather wholly trusting in Jesus, and that He has "checked every check on the list" as it were... Rob Bell needs to know the real Jesus.
philroutszong 2 years ago
Jesus was killed because He purposed before the world began to die for the sins of His people. And the very first sermons that Jesus preached were the same ones His cousin were preaching- "Repent, for the kingdom of God is at hand".
Salvation is by grace through faith that is not of ourselves (Eph. 2:8-9). The gospel(good news) is only good news when it's held up against the bad news of God's righteous requirements. The law was our tutor and steward until Christ came.

Where do you think Jesus was when he was preaching and how do you think the Bible expects you to spread your faith (the Great Commission)? Matthew 6:5 addresses those using prayer to make themselves look great. God is the only one who should receive praise.
98nafets 2 years ago
that's right,Jesus called the pharisee's hypocrites, vipers, wolves and ect.the pharisees missed the whole point of God's laws and the pharisees were proud of their self righteousness.
in the old Testament Job was proud of his self righteousness and God removed his hand of protection away from Job and allowed satan to attack him.the minute Job repented and prayed for the two that insulted God's character God restored him with twice as much that he had before.

This looks like a cheap rip off of a nooma video.
forlife01 2 years ago

If a person does not repent of his/her sin and accept Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, what becomes of that person's soul when he dies?
rodelliot 2 years ago
It's funny how much time you guys spent trying to interpret the bible.
It's a fucked up, outdated book that is full of contradictions and scientific errors.

Consider this, if hell is just some garbage dump outside jerusalem, Then no fret evil doers! The condemnation you deserve because the sin against an infinity worthy and good God wont happen because he's just going to stuff you out of existence.
you wont find that in early church history.

it just blows me away that this guy could find nothing better to do than hate on rob bell, if you know much about bell's ministry you know that he and his church are doing so much to impact the kingdom. with as much money and energy as it took to make this, this dude could have fed some homeless people and talked to them about God and really showed them the LOVE that Christ showed...

How about testing fruit? Rob Bell is teaching a watered-down, false gospel.
msb0000 2 years ago
It's amazing to me that for someone who seems to be so against Rob Bell, he copies his speaking style and structure. Funny that.
Seems a little harsh to make Rob out to be this marshmallowy, love em but don't tell em type of guy ... considering how many people are coming to faith as a result of God's work through him. Hmmm. And the fact that Mars Hill is not just seeing people discover God but also change the world would lead me to believe that perhaps he should be listened to, not parodied.
sevans14 3 years ago
Hang on a second. Jesus TOLD us to go out an preach the Gospel to the whole world! Not keep quiet. If you really cared about people you would tell them about the imminent danger that they face!!! The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand but so is Hell. So Jesus said REPENT! In fact he probably shouted it.
At least Todd Friel is telling people what they need to hear and not what they want to hear. Repentance and Trust in Jesus is the way!
abrahamovervoorde 3 years ago
God didn't say any thing way? because there is no God. I bet you think your God wrote the Bible.
christinepeace 3 years ago
" I bet you think your God wrote the Bible. "
HeReformedMe 3 years ago 2
Hellfire prevention is not the Gospel.... God wants us to love Him as much as He loves us, that is impossible if we are scared of God.
Repent simply means to change your heart / mind about God... from hate to love.
Research deeper into the original Greek and Hebrew... our English Bible's miss so much of the truth of God!
Read and meditate on Matt 5:3-12 and Galatians 5:22-23... their you will find the traits of true children of God, as given to us by the Holy Spirit.
Hellfire is an idiom

I am a reformed Calvinist Christian but I by no means like nor listen to Todd Friel... I can barely take him seriously. All I see in his words and actions is absolute pride and arrogance. No hint of Biblical humbleness and tenderness. Only an annoying immature narrow minded view of Christ and no regard for true biblical meekness.
He is the perfect example of having your theology perfect and your heart wrong...

I don't hate Todd Friel.. I don't even think that he isn't saved.
I just don't see a lot of visible obvious sanctification in the way he talks and presents himself.

The apostle paul paul railed like a mad man.
Jesus condemned the pharasee's.
I bet both of them are immature narrow minded no?
JESUS WAS KILLED FOR THE WAY HE PREACHED!
fishboi87 2 years ago
False.
Jesus was killed for challenging clowns like this who thought that salvation was a checklist of do's and don'ts.
Paul was filled with love and compassion.
What does this guy reflect..?
Hate and condemnation.
that's what.
even if he is pointing out things that are sinful, there is no love in it.
ultramegasaurus 2 years ago
And the saddest part of all is Jesus said that our witness to the world is how we as followers of Christ love each other. With all the personal attacks and angry heresy accusations what kind of message are we sending. Are we not just shooting ourselves in the trying to argue about how or how not to love people? Why is being "right" so important. Cant we all agree that loving people is the point both videos make and what we are all about? So lets stop taking sides and just simply love people
Jgarrisn121 3 years ago
This video makes me sad. What this guy is saying is to "love" someone is to not want to them to go to hell so you tell them about it. Rob is saying that you "love" someone by being Jesus to them and inviting them to into a dynamic relation that is vibrant and hopeful and moving. Then when they see how attractive that is you share why you have this hope. Becoming a Christian is not a formula. Its not Be Scared + Say Words = Heaven. And Heaven is not the goal for Christians. God is.
Jgarrisn121 3 years ago
Religion = We must convince / convict people to make them turn to God in fear.
True Christianity = We plant seeds, the Holy Spirit convinces people to turn to God.
It's been my experience, that all the hellfire preachers drive people away from God!
Our discernment is for us, not to go around pointing out everything we think is wrong with people... that's religion!
Christ taught us to forgive, show mercy, serve, love, etc... God's love through us guides people to God, not away from Him!
ChristianNewsWatch 3 years ago
Perhaps you serve a different God than the God of the Bible?
The God of the Bible is one of Love Mercy Grace Joy, Light & Faith BUT also one of Wrath, Judgement, Truth, Holiness, Righteousness, & Repentance.
Sounds like you may be reading John 3:17 without reading John 3:18...
The world is already condemned. God's Wrath is upon sinful men (John 3:36). To preach anything partially right or entirely different is kindly leading people to a misrepresentation of the true and Living GOD.
BonzaiJakab 3 years ago 3
Perhaps you forget that Jesus died for everyone's sins, so that we may be reconciled to God!
The only wrath God has now is for those that drive people away from Him...

"It's been my experience, that all the hellfire preachers drive people away from God!"
Thats what its suppose to do!
Yea and when someone does come along and preach the true gospel the church divides.
Jesus talked more about hell than everyone else in the bible combined. have you never read that many of his disciples walked no more with him because of the things he said?
fishboi87 2 years ago
Jesus talked about Gehenna.... the rubbish pile outside of Jerusalem at that time... He told the hypocritical judgmental Pharisees that they would not escape Gehenna & in AD 70 when the temple and Jerusalem were destroyed, the Pharisees (and many others) were killed and disposed of in Gehenna!
Hell spoken of in the Bible does not hold the same meanings nowadays as it did back then.
Very little truth remains in the modern day church system, apostasy is rampant!

Wrong. It hold the same now as it did back then.

I think if Friel went out to coffee with Bell and ACTUALLY listened to him all the way through, he might like Bell.
tool2scream05 3 years ago
I don't think there's a bad news part that precedes the good news. That's where God's "moral law" comes in. It was to show them how to emulate God, by NOT doing these things. Therefore it showed them what sin was. However, the law itself was a Gracious Gift. The law was GOOD NEWS, the Bad News came after, when they realized how far from accomplishing this they were.
tool2scream05 3 years ago
I wonder why the Apostle Paul never used the word HELL?????? Maybe he was not your kind of street preacher, eh Mr Friel?????
crucified2 3 years ago
Jesus used it more times than every one else in the bible combined....and he is that kind of street preacher. He's also that God of the old testiment....
fishboi87 2 years ago

Let's be personal with people, not just treat them as sheep moving through the streets to the next slaughter.
trev8908 3 years ago
I have a friend, he attends a school called the School of Urban Missions. Every Friday, he and his class mates go into the streets of Oakland, and they preach Christ. With a bullhorn? No... They walk up to individuals.. Talk with them.. They don't have a bunch of small talk, because neither the person talking, or the person being talked to has time. It's right to the point. They use personal testimony, they give the gospel, and are friendly. My friend says he get's to pray with people EVERY TIME
trev8908 3 years ago
I like doctor reason.. And I agree that there's a bad news part that precedes the good news.. The question is, is bullhorning both those in one breath the best way to open that conversation? I mean, even if you "catch" one, you aren't really letting the rest slip from the net for now, you're actually chasing them away. The next time they hear the gospel, it won't be easier for them to accept, it will make it harder, because they're already predispositioned against it.
trev8908 3 years ago
i understand that you should stop the blind man when he is about to fall off the cliff but the point is he is not at the end of the cliff.. i'm a hindu and i want to know how you would react if i came to you and said "my god is the god almighty and if u dont pray to him like we do you will rot in hell"? Please do tell your answer to this question

did jesus preach sin and repentance or did jesus preach the kingdom of God?
jftvrwk 3 years ago
he preached that repentance from sin (baptism of water) and turning to Christ (baptism in the Spirit) are the only way to the Father (therefore the Kingdom).
The problem is that people know Jesus preached about Kingdom but they put the phrase 'Kingdom of heaven' in their own worldly understanding.
