Interpretation? Who cares! I had goosebumps the whole way through. This is a soloist doing exactly what a soloist should be doing - pouring his heart and soul into the music he's performing. Bravo! (Thank you YTM for uploading this! :)
@Philboy50 I highly doubt that you could play it .1% as well as Yo-Yo Ma. In my opinion, this might be the greatest piece of music ever written. I think he plays it with the perfect amount of swagger: exactly what this piece beckons for. Shame on you.
@Philboy50 Have some respect. This is one of the hardest cello concerto's around. Maybe you should just appreciate the fact that he's human. I know there are better interpretations - but you are a being hard to please. It seems that he does rush a few parts, but can you imagine how nervous he is on stage with such a hard part to play?
@Philboy50 Hopefully you are just an ignorant joker, because anybody who can say something like you said about how masterfully Maestro Ma played to concerto and engaged with the Orchestra has some sort of mental issue.
i was doing hwk until 5:30 AM, and i listened to this to keep myself awake... and it was stuck in my head for the entire day today so far. I love this piece so much, it's so energetic and thrilling...
My cello teacher's cello teachers' cello teacher's cello teacher's teacher was Pablo Casals :D :D so I learned from Pablo Casal's blood line of cellists XD
@fiddlinmatt hahaa TOTALLY!! its greatt!! I actually find it hard to play with much emotion/movement =( I mean, i sway when im standing, but...winking at teh orchestra?? hahahaa awsomee!!
Again, repeating myself, but can not hear this performance without shedding a few tears. Maybe it helps if you think about that this was finished in the US, but when Dvorak was returning home, he heard that his secret love, his brothers wife, which she did not know about, died. Hence the slow movement. Listen to it once more....
There is only one Yo Yo Ma, and he is the God of cello, and Dvorak's concerto is the best in the history of cello concertos.
You can hear this piece with greater orchestras and greater conductors. But you never will hear it better played, not talking the virtuosity he how he plays, but his immersion in the music which made this performance better than anything I heard.
Maestro Pablo Casals passed away many years ago but his influence is forever present. It forces participants to play with added enthusiasm. It is a welcomed "chain reaction" !!
NO WORDS!!!!! Absolutly awesome!!

that concertmaster's duet with yo is awful. the violin is sharp and sounds like he plays a wrong note about a half too high.

I love how Ma engages with the orchestra, eye contact, smile, exchanging thoughts. It's like a big wonderful game.

What cello is he using? Looks like a Montagnana. How the hell does he play so light? I like some of the parts he did though, they were excellent.
