You're ALWAYS better off with a harder shelled paint. Soft paint bounces far more often, whereas hard brittle shells shatter when they hit something. The less "give" the less the paint will absorb the impact, and ultimately burst.
I thought, from my own experience the softer the ball the more chances it has breaking like it somtimes happens in your barrel. That the ball travels so fast it rips open cause the outside if soft. But I can be wrong this is just a theory of mine.
