What a great scene, perfectly played by Omar Sharif's son. His mother died, but he kind of doesn't understand it - like a real child.. Realistic, sad and just great cinema.
This scene does NOT take place in Mongolia but rather on the eastern side of the Urals in Western Siberia. The film is never quite clear about the location of Varykino and Yuriyatin, but they are certainly probably west of Novosibirsk.
And for what it's worth...the cutaway to the profile of Yuri's mother INSIDE the coffin is still one of the most striking moments of montage in film history...
It is funny, the white bearded pope is a Spanish actor, Pepe Nieto. Some takes were made in locations Castille, in the Soria province - a really cold place in winter. Well, it is not Siberia but looks like Siberia in the film.
Thank you for uploading this, my favourite scenes from one of the greatest movies of ever made. A movie that manages to scale both the personal and political on a scale grand enough to do justice to the epic and melancholy injustices suffered by so many millions during that dark period of history.
This movie was such a smash that i remember it in theaters in the early 70s and it still sold out to the point that the theaters stopped showing it because it took away from the new movies.
I have always wanted to know which is the name of the orthodox funeral song they are singing and where I could find the russian words. n the beginning of the novel it says "шли, шли и пели вечную память" ( they walked, walked and sang "Eternal memory") but I really don't know if it is this song. Does anybody know?

@willdlp I believe the song is the Kontakion of the Departed and there are several versions on YouTube. I don't speak Russian so I don't know how good it is, but here are the first three lines of an English translation I have.

look at all the Asiatic looking people, very mongolian features. Eskimo people. I wonder how they got along with the Russians. Some even have on European clothes.
@IoSonoUomo ... You do know there are indigenious inuit tribes in russia, right? That it stretches on through siberia? There are over 12 different time zones and 70+ ethnic groups, not to mention different languages and dialects. With a land mass that huge, just like China, there are bound to be more than one 'russian'.
@JDalltonX Yes, I know it is on the Siberian-Mongolian border. I was just pointed out that the relationship between the European Russians and the Siberian Natives must have been tense at the time, and is an interesting scene of study that is not well know about.

@dahsuerk
Excuse me, but this scene was filmed in south of Spain, near Guadix and La Calahorra (Granada).
You can see Sierra Nevada on this scene

If you dont have any idea what are you talking about just shut...
alvesrocha 2 years ago 10
I know exactly what I'm talking about. The people east of the Urals are Asian looking, the people west of the Urals are European looking.
All I wonder is how the Russians got along with the Siberian natives. They are shown getting along well in this clip.
I have said nothing offensive, yet I find it offensive the way you have negatively marked all my comments and acted beligerently.
