I saw this as a child one afternoon on a battered old B&W television and never forgot it, for me he was the most badass kid I had ever seen. The vision of Sammy in his Khakis, folded up map in his breast pocket casually telling the non believing adults around him what he was up to was forever burned in my brain.
Thank you. When this movie was shown in Japan, I was a little boy and whole school went to see this film. The melody of "Sammy's going South" has been kept singing in my mind for the last 40 years. Thanks to the technology. My memory came back to me and I feel great.
The release of the Sammy Going South DVD by Optimum has been put back to June 18th, 2010. They are having some difficulty locating the complete original 2 hours and 10 minutes version of the film. They don't want to release the shortened 114 minute television version, as shown on Channel 4, if they can help it.
Great clip. I always wanted to hear this song, but it was only released as a single in Japan. Just for the record, Sammy Going South is supposed to be released on DVD in the U.K. Feb. 15, 2010 by Optimum Home Entertaiment.
chasspeed, the Sammy Going South single was also released by Decca in the UK in April, 1963. But it never charted and is now very rare, although I have one in my record collection.
My husband saw this film when he was a little boy the u.k. version and I would like to buy it. Does anyone know where. I would dearly like to surprise him .
I ran Sammy Going South in 1963 during my time as a cinema projectionist in Stoke-on-Trent, England and the song was not in the release print. It was composed to promote the film and was supposed to be released by Decca on a 45 rpm single in time for the film's Royal Film Performance premiere in London on Monday, March 18th, 1963, so that it would be on sale in the foyer, However, those plans were scuppered when Decca held back release of the single (F.11643) to April, 1963. I have this single.
This has always been a favorite film of mine and has been quite influential. I was about Sammy's age when I first saw it and wanted to go to Africa and shoot a leopard as he did. My dream was realized a few years ago. I took my 10 year old on my last African trip. It was released in the US as A Boy Ten Feet Tall and, though I've got it on four VHS and DVD versions, I've not heard this music. Was it composed as a soundtrack or was it an afterthought? Any other fans around?

Try looking on ebay. It's listed from time to time under the title it was released under in the U.S. which was "A Boy Ten Feet Tall."

Thank you for your kind comment.
I think I have had a wrong idea about this song. This was NOT the original song in the film. Thank you very much!

Thank you for your comment.
This is the original music score by Tristram Cary.
FERGUS McLELLAND sings the song.
This music was removed from the shorter versions for the United States.

I also saw this as a child back in the '60s.
Do you have the original 2-hr version or the US short version?
