@ElitexxxSaiyan It's mostly an implication. Sometimes in fiction you may see a character look to the skies and see someone that's no longer with them. In some cases they even speak. So yeah, it's not actually stated and it's more speculation than anything--for all we know Sonic was just like "...Oh wait, I forgot to save Tails. Better go do that." But the sad music before it certainly doesn't help that theory all that much.

The reason this is a bad ending isn't because Tails is dead. Sonic's just jealous that Tails has a constellation and he doesn't, so he stopped hanging out with him.

Eggman went to get a cheeseburger and a shake, which is why you don't fight him at the end.

@seanwrejy It's on purpose. See how it goes from day to night in a linear format? It's the day after Tails has been killed. Sonic is quite an egotistical and self obsessed creature, making out like he doesn't need anyone, they need him, so he is going through his day normally, hence the happy music that Sonic would be humming in his mind. But when the credits say "and thanks... to you" (as in the player), Sonic stops running, the music stops, and that's when the guilt and realization hits him.
