This show was simply funny. Unlike the "Comedies" of today that are all about the rude, crude, and vulgar. Thank goodness I can still catch this on youtube.
get smart has been my favorite show since i was a kid and used to watch it on Nick at Nite. I think they should put it back on the air. I am also glad that the series is now on video and that they made a movie!
actually, if you know how shows are taped, you would know that the actual tape time of a standard "30 minute" network show is really 22minutes (21 min. 56 sec.) with 8 minutes for commercials. Soooo, the gap between these two is really about 2 seconds at most. So now you know...and try to be nicer please... to not know something is OK, but to beat people up because of it is NOT...thank you, God bless...
Two things... the two parts posted are from different episodes. Harry Hoo appeared in The Amazing Harry Hoo and in Hoo done it.
Played by Joey Forman, who was in The Nude Bomb as well.
Also, the episode aired back in 1966. Today there may be 8 minutes of a 30 minute show reserved for commercials. Back in the 60's, commercials were Limited to 3 minutes in a half hour, and 5 minutes in an hour.
come on, where's your humour? Who cares if they're fake Chinamen or real asians, it's funny and it's not sterotyping them either. You will see that Hoo is smarter than Smart hahaha get it? Smarter than Smart?
I always thought they were making fun of the obviously non-Asian actors who played Charlie Chan in the 30's and 40's. One was Swedish and one was Scottish-American.
Every one seems too focused on the fact that Hoo is a fake Asian. That isn't the point. There is no racist intent in this episode. Get Smart is all about delivering the one liners and puns. The show isn't deep enough for racism. The fake Asian got the part because he could the lines well. It's that simple
i love get smart, but i think people are pretty slow. i'm not even talking about get smart anymore, becuase someone actually gave me the CORRECT reason for this, not some made up reason to stop someone feeling bad about organisers of such a god show.
My point now is that the use of fake asians in that era was very unfair. And don't tell me that all of the fake asians were chosen becuase they delivered lines better than real asians. do you see fake asians nowday half as much as you did then? NO
Yeah, except now real Asians are in dumber roles; remember that new Six Flags commercial where the Asian man is all, "More flags, more fun!" And Asian females are paired with a white male...what is up with that?!? Too much AF/WM pairings...
To clear up some confusion, this Hoo Done it Part 2 clip is actually from another Get Smart episode that also guest starred Joey Foreman as Harry Hoo.
"Because, we took the simple precaution of loading our guns with blanks!", "Ooh, in that case gentlemen, put you hands up." White guy playing asian "Amazing". lol this show never gets old.
No, Charlie Chan was an enormously famous Asian-american detective. The character appeared in over 30 films, with three different actors handling the roles -- each of whom were non-asian. This character in the Get Smart episode is most certainly a parody on Charlie Chan. Just the mannerisms, etc.
Anyone seen "Murder by Death"? Now THAT movie was racist about asians as far as a "fake" asian goes. Peter Sellers plays a detective Sidney Wang (with his adopted son Willie Wang) ugh..
The asian stereotyping was off the chart, and although it was meant to be funny for that reason, I could definitely see how people could take offense. HOWEVER we have to remember that these shows we consider racist are almost always comedies! People need a sense of humor sometimes.
Agreed. But as I mentioned before, they weren't making for of Asians. They were mocking the film portayals of Charlie Chan, a famous fictional detective from the 1940s. In those movies, Chan was always played by an white guy with makeup on. However his son was played by an Asian actor. That was what they were mocking in Murder By Death -- not asians.
The plot thickens like the thicket in Agatha Christie's backyard. 10 little agent boys, one by one they die and then there were none. Agent 99 is my favorite she-agent of all time, and also agents 125, 111, 101, 133, 90210...
Asians are not portrayed as the enemy here. You need to stop overthinking a silly but clever show...there is a wide potential for legit literary criticism of this show, but your not on the right track.
The syndicated episodes always cut out my favorites parts. In this episode, when they find the initials HH, after Max says Herbert Hoover, he says HECTOR HERNANDEZ! I can't find the uncut version.
*starts crying* I alwaywas wanted to know what happened! The tape I used to have cut off right when the guns went off and that was over 11 years ago! Finally! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

also, if i remeber right from 3 weeks ago, there were more fake asians

still, there were other fake asians, no?
and tv used a lot of fake asians back in the day. Kung Fu, anyone?

It is a parody of Charlie Chan. Played by all white actors.

They were actually going to use an asian actor, but in the end they didn't becuase they thought people wouldn't watch the show.
