one time i was at long and mquade i brought my bass i saw a double bass with a bow while no one was looking i quickly used it on my hofner bass quietly so i didnt hear it
wouldnt matter which bow you try it with.. its not going to work for shit because you cant selectively choose a string to play without the curvature of a bowed instruments fingerboard
Neat! I imagine I'd have to mute and fret simultaneously, like those rare times I "pull a Hendrix" and use a distortion pedal for some star-spangled fun.
It seems it would be easier holding the neck higher and the bow underhanded, emulating a double bass. I'd try to bow it around the 24th fret, but that's because I like to hammer the strings there with my fingers. Artificial harmonics with a bow would be interesting too--Paganini was doing it in the early 1800's.
sit down on a chair. put the buttom of your bass down the ground like an upright cello. Play on the lowest sring with the bow around the 7th fret or so.
you might want to use a cello or stand up bass bow... or at least put some cello rosin on the violin bow, it will give the bow more friction and make a nicer tone.
I bought a bow just yesterday to try something like this out, cool to see someone else trying it out.

@spectre This is awesome, I've been thinking of doing this. Is the violin bow a normal one that you bought from a music shop?

peter murphy did this in the 80s in a song called "cuts you up", it sounded pretty cool how they did it.

this sounds really cool and eerie, i think i might try it in one of my songs, thanks dude

for this to sound good, you'll need to get some flatwound strings. that's what's on violin, upright bass, etc.

sounds cool

I think i'll go get myself a bow... Reminds me of the guitarist/vocalist for Sigur Ros.

Try bowing over the pickups and use flats or halfround/grounds, they'll resonate better and give you a deeper tone.

Jimmy Page and Steve Harris would be proud!

You should try it with a bass bow. might get better grip. Cool experiment, though.

Were you using ordinary roundwound strings?

@megadeth22885 If you play the bass upright and bow across the neck you can avoid that problem if you're playing on the E or G strings.

first band that made this popular as led zeppelin. the lead guitarist used a bow to play the guitar

Is that a violin bow, or a viola bow? It looks kind of long to be a regular fiddle bow.

fiddle=violin

I use a zoom II pedal - custom effect, just throw in echo, flange, and some envelop follower.
Favorite tunes include Gayane Ballet Suite, Star spangled banner, or Hall of the Mountain King.

holy shit. I'm going to have to try this. I wonder what distortion would do to this. . .

Try to keep away from the lowest notes
the higher ones sound mesmerizing in a way.
