There were many experiments on X-rays for example. Today exposing people to this amount of radiation would not be allowed but in those days people were not aware of the dangers. The experimenters got more exposure and died of cancer.

From what I can see Mengele was at Auschwitz for 21 months. If he killed 400 000 people that is over 19 000 a month. If he took no days off during the whole of his time at the camp that is 626 people every single day.
