ragtime fans.....a "peacherine" was turn-of-the-century slang for "dazzlingly beautiful woman" so think of your girl when you play this and you'll feel it more, great playing Manoel i loved it
awesome job...and this is totally random, but if u think that reading music is an important part of playing the piano then rate this as a good comment...please..thanks...
Your interpretation is lively and true to the spirit of ragtime. Whether slow or fast, the heart of the music is steady rhythm and lively syncopation. There has to be an underlying groove to which people can dance or whirl or strut -- if they wish. It's living music, not dead music!
I would normally agree on the tempo but now that people no longer dance to ragtime I see no harm in speeding it up a bit. Ragtime is more about entertainment nowadays rather than articulation accuracy. I've played the maple leaf many times in front of audiences and they just like it quick and upbeat. Yes I respect Joplin's recommendation on the tempo, but it really depends on the audience (and whether or not their dancing, heh).Of course there's always a limit.
You're free to play a piece of music as you wish, provided you wrote it! Mr. Joplin was quite clear about how he wanted Ragtime played. The problem lay in his day with the finger buster music hall players who lived only for dexterity and showmanship. This one & Easy Winners have a nice tempo and a comfortable groove once you find them. I don't agree with play slow-fast-slow or sane-insane-back to sanity on the repeats. But as you say, you're free to interpret, if you must. Rock hard and steady.
You're amazing dude! I am learning this song right now in lessons. I have been taking piano 6 years, so I think I can do it. Thanks so much! I can always come watch this and know how to play it! You're a big help! Thank you!
Joplin did say that ragtime shouldn't be played fast. But having listened to some piano rolls of his, if they're at all accurate, his "slow" would be my "unbelievably, fingerbreakingly impossibly fast!" I think your initial tempo sounds about right. You can hear all the notes, your left hand is rock-steady, it's great. Then you speed up quite a bit, and (amazingly, to me) have time to turn the page. Then you slow down. My solution: enlist a page-turner! Whatever tempo, just maintain it, no?
Because speed is not important in ragtime songs. The player plays the way he wants to play, the speed he likes, do you undestand? And This is my youtube, I will censor what I want to censor. If you thing it is wrong, it is your problem, not mine.
Ah yes, I almost forgot about this rag. Some parts are a tad faster than I usually play it (and a slightly different part B) but that's perfectly fine. Nice job!
Some folks here really need to learn what ragtime was all about. Sounds just like the same snobbery Joplin, himself, encountered. Ragtime was the antithesis of conformity. Play it however you wanna play it! Don't play it like somebody else. We've already heard them do it. We wanna hear YOUR version! =D
Really nice, I also am playing this piece, one tidbit of advise... it may just be me but your tempo is not controlled in places is should be. But overall really great.
he didn't play this too fast at all. Scott joplin liked his songs being played at either slow, medium, or medium fast tempos. this is fine, I'd say it's about medium fast. really it depends on the song whether you play it that speed or not, it sounds find anyway
There is no record of Joplin saying to or even playing his own pieces slowly. The note that Stark attributed to Joplin instructed not to play "fast". It says nothing about playing slowly. "Fast" would be faster than what you hear in this performance. There were some really flash pianists back in those days whipping these things out at 120 bpm. The tempos used here are not fast -- just as Joplin/Stark indicated.
hey, dont listen to those no talent ass clowns telling you to slow down, as long as it sounds great, who cares? i praise you for not playing Maple leaf rag, or The Entertainer, dear god, a friggin unborn monkey FETUS could play those...anyways, great job!
not a question to play it slow cuz it's easy. Ragtime MUST BE played SLOW not FAST, can then I sound messy like u played, but no way, make what u want if u think ur right xD
thats right, ragtime must be played slow, Scott Joplin said: "Never play ragtime fast". -Scott Joplin Collected Piano Works by The new York Public Library & Belwin-Mills Book. Specially if you cannot play it fast, play it fast when you have already played thousand times that piece. Walk, then run.
i guess if he were playing it he could slow it down a bit.
mjuniorsc doesn't seem to have a problem playing fast. and i'm pretty sure he isn't trying to impress scott joplin. if scott joplin wants to tell him himself, i guess he can feel free to do so
Nicely played and you expressed yourself in the piece very well. Good idea to put the music in plastic sleeves; I usually send mine halfway across the room when I turn my pages.

Thats sweet, i learned this rag by ear quite a while ago, but havent pulled it out for a while.
Brilliant, i model myself after people like you, and i cant wait till i canplay this fast!!!!!
CoolKindaGuy1029 3 years ago 2
That's pretty nice, but i think you used too much pedal, instead, more articulation and syncopation will make the song alive!!

i have mixed thoughts about this.
clearly faster than intended by joplin, but i think that ragtime can sound very good if played fast, but not 'blurry' if you know what i mean..
well done. its not often you hear that one, its usually maple leaf or the entertainer, nice to hear something new.
