what's the eye of a hurricane? like, what is it like if youre in the eye of a storm? does it mean that the storm is worse there or does it mean that that area is, for lack of a better work, peaceful (at least for the time being)?
@username00008 The eye comes from the inward spiraling clouds in the hurricane that form dense rain bands. Around the eye, however, its eyewall, is considered the thunderstorm cloud and it produces the most precipitation. It's weird though because for all the powerful rains and winds that surrounds it, the eye, it is very quiet. I believe though its safer to look at the eye from a distance than try to get in or close to it.
I just took a class in Geosystems. Info still fresh for me! LOL! :)
It starts out as a thunder storm in the western coast of africa and then water evaporationg mixes with air particles and it starts to gain wind speed usally up to 40 MPH. Then It starts to swirl and rain and it becomes a tropical storm. Then the ocean currents move it to where its going to go (depending on where the hot spots are.). The cloud starts to rotate now up to about 80 miles per hour (MPH) and the rotating cloud forms around the eye and the eye wall is formed.
ccdcat68, i don't want to sound all technical, but probably the reason why was because a hurricane grows and increases in strength from warm water, so probably when katrina blew by, the water was maybe warmer than when gustav blew by. but that was just a guess.
Rubbish. Hurricanes, typhoons and cyclones are all the same things... hurricanes aren't a stronger version of a typhoon as you seem to be implying here. It just depends on which area of sea the storm is present in. In the Atlantic and around the America's it's a hurricane, in the Pacific around Asia it's a typhoon and around the Indian Ocean area it's a cyclone. All are strong, all are deadly and none is worse than any other...
Hurricane katrina. Impressive video.

@username00008 the eye of the hurricane is the center witch is the dot you see in the storm but only hurricanes have eyes.

awesome formation. All hurricanes it all starts with a small, weak, untended typhoon.

Hurricane Ike was larger.

thats strange katrina intensified over the gulf of mexico but gustav weekend can some one tell me why?
ccdcat68 3 years ago
It all has to do with ocean temps and barometric air pressure as well as other atmospheric factors through the path & growth of the storm.
Gustav was weakened because it was influenced by wind shear and upper level dry air intrusion. Its passage over Cuba weakened it too.
Katrina also weakenend just before making landfall (from a Cat 5 to a Cat 4 storm), but by that time it was still an extremely powerful storm.
I don't have enough space for too much more, but hope this helps a bit.
