i have played harp for about 39 years now. started on the ubiquitous Marine band and then moved to Sp20 in the 70's. tried Big River and Golden Melody. went to Lee Oskars briefly. tried the cheep Huangs for a minute. tried Hering Vintage 1923's and actually have a couple in my case yet. still have a Sp20 or 2. went to Bushman Delta Frost for a time as well and still use them some. my current favorite harp is the Suzuki Manji. great volume and projection. but for a beginner try Sp20.
Mark is a harmonica titan. He is a master of the entire harp--most guys shy away a bit from the upper holes of the diatonic. Not Mark. I can't figure out any weaknesses at all in his playing and singing. I take my hat off to him. Love those color coordinated suits and hats he wears too!
Most good harmonicas/harps are a reasonable price - hohner are sweet, marine band, special 20, blues harp are all roughly £25-£35 which is probably about $35-$50 in the states (as they have to send them further they probably cost a little more).
I'm happy with my hohners and I don't think you need to spend anymore personally.
This may sound odd, but im really intrested in learning toplay harp. what would be a good all around inexpensive harmonica to start with? Ive done some lookin online, but the ads really dont tell you much. Any input would help. BTW this guys amazing.
@wpaschal88 I would reccomend a cheap one to start with as long as it is a 10 hole diatonic harmonica which is the main type for blues, key of c is a good key to start with, hohner do have a good range of harmonicas
Hohner Special 20 is the best harp for the money. Most instructional stuff uses C harp. Most blues songs are with A harp. I like D harp. John Gingick's Rock N Blues harmonica book has a great instructional CD with it.
I've been playing harp for forty five years. I used Hohner Marine Bands for forty three of those, but know I'm really having fun with the Hohner Golden Melody: plastic comb is more durable and impervious, harps are louder and looser, easier to bend. Secret to blues harp: learn to play ONE note at a time, and learn to bend. Once you can do that, you're well on your way.
I like the Hohner Golden Melodies. Plastic comb will last forever, very loose, easy to bend. To play good harp, for starters, you need to learn how to blow and to draw one note at a time, and you need to learn how to bend.
@wpaschal88 Harmonicas are very expensive actually, you need at least 12 to be able to play in all keys and they break all the time, so they need to be replaced
Try a beginner model by Hohner. Check out the YouTube videos by Adam Gussow and his website "Modern Harmonica blues." He has a page on his website on different models he recommends. One model he does not mention is the Hohner "Pocket Pal" which is an inexpensive good beginner model. The body is plastic and it is easy to play. The Marine Band is also a good alternative. The body is wood and it is better quality but also more expensive. I have one of each.
Met and caught Mark at B.L.U.E.S, downtown Chicago. Mark was very cool about showing me his setup. I asked him about his harps..thinking he must have some custom jobs to give him that fat rich tone. Nope...just uses Marine Bands right out of the box... and he tosses them into a big ole suitcase..Mark is the awesome!!!!
Just caught Mark, Kim Wilson and Magic Dick at the Cabooze in Minneapolis. They were all fabulous, but man, Mark, at least that night, was a cut above everyone else. He is THE MAN.
wow he is good

How to play that riff he plays 0:45 - 1:00? That Ta Ta tamtatam?
drachir11 3 years ago
It´s easy actually, called 12 bar blues and it goes like this;
3 4 -3 3x4
4 4 -3 4x2
3 4 -3 3x2
-2 -2 -2 -2 -234
Enjoy!!
kakunaghaddas 3 years ago
just to add to that, -2 and 3 are the same note, but you can add a bend to -2 for an extra bluesy feel
