I like hearing others' comments trying to tie it all down logically, even if they're majorly dissing the movie ... some things really ARE beyond human comprehension and maybe some of these stories offer clues pointing to some truths in that zone just beyond our grasp ... perhaps that's one compelling factor that grabs our attention and induces (sometimes heated) discussion !

Hey, at first I thought when they found his fingerprints all over the girl's place that he was getting set up to take the fall for the whole thing.....haha. Was I ever off. Seemed like a double loopback to me. But the good guy wins, the bad guy loses and most of the people are saved. That's good..that's theway, uh-huh uh-huh, I like it!
Basically, it was his future self that went to the past, who rescued Claire. However, since this was his FUTURE self he did not die in the past. Think of it like a loop, he goes into the past, and he dies, but then his other self goes into the future, and repeats the process.
@BackToNummChucks He must have went back in time but in a Parallel Universe where he still existed. I Believe that we are all connected, including our Parallel Selves thats why he had a Déjà Vu at the end of the movie.

It's obvious that Doug had traveled to the pass to save her, but of course failed to do so. Okay, so what happened to the future Doug that went back? Did he die and would the autopsy report that they'd discovered a body\DNA identical to the present Doug!?
Yes sir! TYVM for the upload. I complain about the continuity. There were many mistakes in reality itself. Not so much in the time flow, but like when the atf boss shuts down Doug's investigation so the gov packs up their time travel stuff - as if. Earlier Doug could just jump in the magical hummer and drive away in it then he is crashing around. It's like the editor got caught in the loop and someone else had to paste it together. Someone not so smart as the original.
My mom and I watched this movie twice and we came up to the conclusion that he already went back in time before the whole thing started. We think that he went back more than once to figure out a way to save both of them and the people on the other side would send him messages from the past to make sure he went to the to them if he died. I mean if you think about it he had to die at the end anyway because there would be two of him. I know it's confusing, but I guess it makes since.:P

there are actually 4 timelines, the original, where the bombing takes place without Jim Cavaziel being interfered with. The 2nd, after he sends the note. The 3rd, after his first attempt to stop the bombing (the present for most of the movie), and the 4th, which is the "4 days in the past" and conclusion where the bombing is stopped. Consult the wikipedia page with it's diagram if this isn't clear. There are no plot holes.
my point of view.... two parallel worlds cross (which I think is a mistake), one where Claire gets killed 2 hours before the bombe and then dropped onto the shore to pretend she was part of the explosion. The other is where she gets saved by Carlin and she heals him up at her place. So at the beginning of the movie, Carlin finds Claires dead body but also finds bloody cloths at Claires place which was used to heals Carlin. She cant heal Carlin if she died before he got shot to try and save her
oh so dejá vu in this film world is basically when an event from two alternative realities cross? as in a person experiences an event which they sub-consciously somewhat remember transpiring in another reality?
@sionv2009 No he is not dead. The future HIM is dead. So at the last moment of the movie you were seeing the past HIM. Because the future didnt reach yet. Remember he travelled back to the past?

i can not believe i missed this movie ......"EXCELLENT". I have to say it would have been an interesting ending if the original timeline had played through and she'd been maimed and then killed in the ferry explosion. Just the whole, you can't change the past concept seems too cool (Terminator 3 in mind).

Wee.. it doesn't show it, but Doug has already gone into the past twice at the start of the movie. The second time, he goes into the past and meets alive Claire, but doesn't save her. The third Doug saves her and the boat, but dies, leaving the very first Doug to the better reality. So you see, he has already met alive Claire once already, the second time is " Deja Vu ".. get it? Whew..
As we watch the movie the hints are already placed.. which means past Doug put them there, we just didn't see it. And, if he had to put hints.. that means he failed once before, and wanted to leave something behind just in case.
@livyz02 Remember earlier in the movie....when Doug was trying to convince Claire that he was there to help her. He asked her the exact same thing that she asked him in the end. And they both replied the same same thing. The reason for the laugh was because, he had as some would say a Deja-Vu moment. Thats why he paused for a minute and then laugh. Thats my opinion of it!!!!
you know, if they doug didn't die in the car, there would be 2 dougs running around from then on. so it was a smart move by the writer to kill him honourably like that. although, the ending made me think about that guy who sent doug back in time and how his brain would have had to adjust to the fact that the ferry accident never happened. from now on everything's changed, eg. the gurls life that was saved, etc. but what about the people that are already in the future, the people 4 days ahead? :O
@dira2009 actually the guy who sent doug back will not remember him becuz with out that girl dead then both of them would have never met . so the guy wouln't have to adjust that the accident never happened becuz it his head the accident never happen get it ?
@dira2009 like the movie implied, it depends. there are a lot of complex ideas. it's possible that, assuming he lived and escaped the car, 1. he both lives and dies, since the universe splits at each "decision point", 2. causality from the present to the past does not exist and two multiple copies can exist in one timeline/one universe, 3. you can't meet your past self because you cannot travel back in time but only to other universes that may be very similar but not quite our universe, 4. etal
this movie has so many twists and turns but in the end it all comes together and it's amazing Ive seen this movie like 30 times(1st time on youtube) and every time i absolutely love it

I have to say it would have been an interesting ending if the original timeline had played through and she'd been maimed and then killed in the ferry explosion. Just the whole, you can't change the past concept seems too cool (Terminator 3 in mind).

Cn someone explain the last bit w Doug and Claire in the car pls. hv watched e movie many times but cnt quite get it. does Claire figure out e Doug who helped her is from e future? does she try to convey this to Doug? if so does Doug get it? if not wat was e meaning of claire's question & why did Doug say "no" and they both kind of laughed? thanks in sdvance to any responders.

Wee.. it doesn't show it, but Doug has already gone into the past twice at the start of the movie. The second time, he goes into the past and meets alive Claire, but doesn't save her. The third Doug saves her and the boat, but dies, leaving the very first Doug to the better reality. So you see, he has already met alive Claire once already, the second time is " Deja Vu ".. get it? Whew..

As we watch the movie the hints are already placed.. which means past Doug put them there, we just didn't see it. And, if he had to put hints.. that means he failed once before, and wanted to leave something behind just in case.

@livyz02 Remember earlier in the movie....when Doug was trying to convince Claire that he was there to help her. He asked her the exact same thing that she asked him in the end. And they both replied the same same thing. The reason for the laugh was because, he had as some would say a Deja-Vu moment. Thats why he paused for a minute and then laugh. Thats my opinion of it!!!!

you know, if they doug didn't die in the car, there would be 2 dougs running around from then on. so it was a smart move by the writer to kill him honourably like that. although, the ending made me think about that guy who sent doug back in time and how his brain would have had to adjust to the fact that the ferry accident never happened. from now on everything's changed, eg. the gurls life that was saved, etc. but what about the people that are already in the future, the people 4 days ahead? :O

@dira2009 actually the guy who sent doug back will not remember him becuz with out that girl dead then both of them would have never met . so the guy wouln't have to adjust that the accident never happened becuz it his head the accident never happen get it ?

@dira2009 like the movie implied, it depends. there are a lot of complex ideas. it's possible that, assuming he lived and escaped the car, 1. he both lives and dies, since the universe splits at each "decision point", 2. causality from the present to the past does not exist and two multiple copies can exist in one timeline/one universe, 3. you can't meet your past self because you cannot travel back in time but only to other universes that may be very similar but not quite our universe, 4. etal
