I just wanna say, Mickey rourke is "in my eyes" born great, a modest talent! he don't force himself on you!, you find him, then realise!!!!..... N cage prob has had and needed a big helping hand through his career, lets face it, he pushes weights but isn't different or special or blessed. and would have fucked the wrestler up!!!
woah I can't imagine Cage in that role AT ALL. so glad it ended up being Mickey. He's a total legend and The Wrestler re-designated him as the best of the best.
I love both Nicholas Cage and Mickey tremendously, you guys can't say bad things about Cage because he was gracious and respectful in the way he spoke about it, if he had said well the wrestler is beneath me and I feel I could do better things so I left it to Mickey, then he would be an ass but he was respectful.
nic cage and micky rourke must have a problem with each other for something what happend years ago you can see it in nicolas cages eyes just at the end of this
I thought Nick pulled out because he was at a ROH show and asked The American Dragon (Daniel Bryans to all you WWE fans) if he looked like a wrestler, and The American Dragon replied "No"
Very talented actors I respect Cage for what he did for micky. They couldnt finance micky due to his drug related problems which skyrockets the price of insurance for both the movie and the actor himself... Its the same type of story with Robert downey Jr. he couldnt afford the insurance for the movie iron man2 but male gibson put down 12 million wich allowed robert to take play his part which frankly shot him back into hollywood!!! I think this The Wrestler was made for micky so glad he got it!
@doomguy5000 Rourke already had that particular physique that was necessary since way back, probably a little bit of steroid in that too, Rourke admits as much but yes, Mickey doesn't have to play the part, he is the part. :D
He can act, but he's just Cage. A movie he stars in is automatically just a Cage movie. He doesn't shape shift, he's just himself. Sure he does the crying and the laughing and the emotions, but that doesn't turn him into a character.
You ever see a movie with an actor who you appreciate, go watch an interview and see a whole other side of someone and be amazed? Yea, he's the opposite.
@brybry19871987 His natural body type is slim. I've spent a lot of time around bodybuilders and the gym culture and i know a steroid built body when I see one...there are many more in hollywood and the music scene!
Its happened in lots of films and tv shows. For example at first they wanted Arnie to be Kyle Reese in the Terminator films. Another Ive read is Bruce Willis was not first pick for Die Hard and M J Fox wasnt first choice for BTTF!!
@pearljam619 Fox was first choice, but they couldn't get him because of Family Ties. Then it didn't work out with Eric Stoltz and they tried to get Fox again and only managed it with some insane schedule where he worked on the show during the day and the film mostly during the night.
That seemed like a pretty lame excuse to pull out of the movie. If other actors can do put on the bulk with the help of a professional trainer (Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Ryan Reynolds) then why can't Cage do the same?
I remember reading that Cage realized that Aronofsky really wanted Rourke and stepped out of the role so Micky to do it.
@KreatorRage Even if it did suck shit, certainly it cannot be argued that Nicholas Cage is beyond bad movies. He has done a lot of good work, one of which is referenced by him, "Rumblefish", but he has some horrid contributions as well.

i guess I just dont like his acting...not just in that movie in others. sorry. I didnt say Cage would have been perfect for this role, but i am sure he could have pulled it off as well....
Cage, not a great actor?..Try " Leaving Las Vegas, Vampires Kiss, Adaptation, Wild at Heart, Raising Arizona, Weather Man,the upcoming Bad Lieutenant, to name a few"...Yes, he does big budget action formula stuff as well, but so what?..Mickey Rourke's doing "Ironman 2", and those who think Rourke is holier than thou, remember he's collected a few cheques on dumb action crap as well...It's called Modern Hollywood..paying the bills,..modern actors can't survive on just doing Hamlet at the local..
hes lying. It was Darren Aronofsky who fought to get mickey and he resigned nicolas cage the role, and was taking a great risk for doing so, becouse no one els wanted him and he coulden get money of he was gonna do it. it wasent becouse nicolas coulden get trained for the part. its becous they chose to go whit mickey. listen to the interview whit howard stern and darren her on youtube.
he also turned down the matrix...after will smith was offered the part of neo...thank god he turned down both films...they were much better off without him...especially the wrestler!
@andyf2280 He used to be a really interesting actor throughout 80s-early 90s. He did a great job in Peggy Sue Got Married by turning a predictable and potentially boring character into a humorous and quirky one. He'd done that with almost all his films inthe 80s, from Vampire's Kiss to Valley Girl. But after Leaving Las Vegas he started taking himself way too seriously and choosing those macho/action- hero roles which he's really not suited for. He's more of character actor, IMO
@ritter89 I agree with you, he's not bad actor at all, just as you said he seems recently to have gone for crappy action type roles, he was good in the Weatherman, altho' Caine stole the show. Adaptation, I even really liked Face-Off....(I'm sure I'm in the minority there tho')
"National Treasure" on the other hand, I had to sit thru that, in Spanish, on a looooong bus journey in Chili, purgatory.
@andyf2280 Yeah, he was great until about the mid 90s. One of the most creative and unique actors to come on the scene in a long time. I was blown away by his performances in Leaving Las Vegas, Birdy, Raising Arizona, Boy In Blue and even Valley Girl. He'd deliver these great oddball performances, even in films that flopped commercially. But after Con Air(still a decent performance, IMO), he got into an "action hero" type groove that didn't fit him. He does "dark comedy" best, imo
@andyf2280 ,Nicholas Cage is not only a great actor but a truly faithful friend. He is honest and always looking out for others. Most people don't know this but I do and wanted to share it w/ everybody.
@andyf2280 And "Raising Arizona". Genius. Brilliant role in that. I think Nick Cage is a great actor, but for some reason, he seems to fit into Hollywood largely as someone that gets cast for average movies a lot of the time. A bit wasted, but I guess it's just how it balanced out with the money he gets offered, and his schedule, or whatever.
Kudos for Cage being humble to give Rourke the oppurtunity of resurrection. If Cage had done this role it would not have been Oscar worthy, no one would have talked about it and it would just be another "Cage flick." Such as Bangkok Dangerous, Next, Knowing which were horrible films. Now this has given Rourke Iron Man 2 which is awesome.
thank god he didn't land this role. i'm sorry but cage sucks. i hate his acting. i think he's good as hell in raising arizona. other than that, i can't think of a single performance i dug of his. wait, no i take that back. he kicked ass in adapation. but other than that,..he sucks.
the fuck your talking about? He was incredible in lord of war and bangkok dangerous and aswell in national treasure. And why dont you judge yourself before judging other people. You say he sucks but i bet your far worse than him so how about you keep your punk ass critics to yourself you self righteous asswipe!
i'm intitled to my opinion. if i think nicolas cage is a tool, then he's a tool. and as far as judging actors is concerned, what the hell do you think the academy awards are about you dumbass?
Ho so because you say something its supposed to become a fact the instant? You maybe think hes a tool but that doesnt make him one,a long time ago people said the earth was flat.. does it make the earth flat? Did it ever come to your pea sized brain that i was agaisnt the academy award, and anyone who makes a living on bashing other people career and personal life..
this is the stupidest conversation i've ever had. if i think nicolas cage is a lame actor, then it's my opinon maevista. which is my right. i'm through arguing about this ridiculous topic with you. feel free to respond. you can have the last word.
He's a really good actor (when he gets the right material and people to work with, of course), but I'm convinced that no matter how good he would have been in the role, he would never have brought as much to the role as Mickey did.
However, I do think Cage needs to start pursuing these kinds of roles again. It's about time he started proving to us how good he is again.
fuck you. youre a big ass schmuck. hes not a jew, hes an Italian. and do you think you could do better? youre a fucking loser.well i guess we could say the same for alot of actors then huh?
Cage is ten years younger than Rourke but is as soft as shite. They may as well have got Ross from Friends to do the role, like he did in Band of Brothers
it was a great movie. it will be probably be mickeys defining film other than 9 and a half weeks. i think mickey did use steroids at one point. either way awesome movie.
Back to Cage: he's a fine actor but no one else could have brought what Mickey Rourke brought to the role of the Ram - the pure genius (and physicality, too). Cage was wise to remove himself - this role could have been an absolute disaster to his career - it would be quite easy for an actor to look ridiculous in this part.
With all respect to both you and N. Cage, if it were possible for Cage to have trashed his career with a poor performance or unsuitable role selection, his career would have ended long ago. Seems to me he dishes up one respectable performance for every three low-grade, lead-man action roles, normally playing them with an uninspiring and unnoteworthy hollowness.
I do agree that Rourke was the right man for "The Wrestler", and if Cage is sincere, good on him for backing out.
No disrespect to Cage, but THANK GOD he didn't do "THe Wrestler"! Mickey shot through the stratosphere with that performance and now he's back. Rourke is everything that Cage and Johnny Depp, and so many of those actors of that generation, have always longed to be. Mickey is on the edge - in his acting and in his life. These other guys are just small fry. I bet Sean Penn is embarassed . . . because he KNOWS. Mickey had the guts or insanity to walk into the darkness, and then come back.
Sean Penn is a fantastic actor - but "Milk" was a mediocre film, like most biopics. Listen to Sean's acceptance speech and you can hear the awkward position he was put in by the academy. Penn told Rolling Stone that after seeing "The Wrestler" he "wept" and that "it was a beautiful piece of work". Nick Cage - no one else - could have pulled off that role - the other actors know what came down, what Rourke accomplished.
see here you are just pointing out facts which are interesting...a total 180 of your other comments which are just loaded with riduclous opinions.. though i have to disagree with your mediocre comment about milk and most biopics..just a few biofilms come to mind that display some of the best acting yet on film..SHINE, THE PIANIST, POLLOCK, COPYING BEETHOVEN, AMADAUS, THE AVIATOR, MEN OF HONOR, BASQUIAT, RAY, SCHINDLERS LIST, QUILLS...these movies kinda make your statement look "mediocre"...
I said that "most" biopics are mediocre - definitely not all. They often are big money makers and seem to get reflexive oscar attention. I think "The Life And Times of Harvey Milk" was a way better film than "Milk" - but that was a documentary. You may find that opinion ridiculous but its shared by many who've seen both films. Say, I really like Sean Penn -as an actor and politically - I just think this situation with The Wrestler was exceptional.
well again your "most" mediocre biopics comment still seems a little off...i mean i just named a few...you still have movies like THE HURRICANE, CINDERRALLA MAN, DONNIE BRASCO, AMERICAN SPLENDOR.etc..so thats why i disagree with the term "most".cus there aint that many more out there in our time at least that would make your statement "MOST", true.and i have never seen the documentary on harvey milk, so i dont think your opinion on that subject is ridiculous.and yes the WRESTLER was exceptional
A. Because he's already over-exposed and would be even more so in leotards, love ya Nick, but take a vacation, and take Samuel L. Jackson with you, ..and Christian Bale...and Julia Roberts..
he got punked out by wrestlers in ROH. they asked bryan danielson if cage has the look of a wrestler and Danielson laughed in his face and said no lmao....
Bottomline...Mickey played a great role, but did'nt have to act. Shoot he didn't even need a makeup artist to make him look screwed up. At least he got off the juice after the movie. Did you see him fight Jericho?! Cheesy!
nicholas cage really isnt a phenomanal actor, the role was too challenging for him anyway, it's a good job rourke got the part because he played it to perfection.
Darren Aronofsky said that he had a change of heart and that he told Cage he couldn't do the film with him because Rourke was meant for the role and he was willing to look for financing for a smaller budget with Rourke in the lead
Nah he pulled out because he only wants to be involved in deeper meaningful movies like Bangkok Dangerous the National Treasure movies, Ghost Rider or The Wicker Man!
I think Mickey Rourke has basically admitted (by never denying) that he used steroids to get into the shape he was in. I mean, they hired a steroid dealer to play a steroid dealer in the movie. I remember seeing Rourke on Letterman and Letterman asked if he used steroids and Mickey just sort of grimaced as if to say, "I can't say yes because it's illegal."
Whether he did steroids for the role or not, he would have sucked.

Cage, not a great actor?..Try " Leaving Las Vegas, Vampires Kiss, Adaptation, Wild at Heart, Raising Arizona, Weather Man,the upcoming Bad Lieutenant, to name a few"...Yes, he does big budget action formula stuff as well, but so what?..Mickey Rourke's doing "Ironman 2", and those who think Rourke is holier than thou, remember he's collected a few cheques on dumb action crap as well...It's called Modern Hollywood..paying the bills,..modern actors can't survive on just doing Hamlet at the local..

hes lying. It was Darren Aronofsky who fought to get mickey and he resigned nicolas cage the role, and was taking a great risk for doing so, becouse no one els wanted him and he coulden get money of he was gonna do it. it wasent becouse nicolas coulden get trained for the part. its becous they chose to go whit mickey. listen to the interview whit howard stern and darren her on youtube.

yeah, cuz howard stern is definitely the go-to source for this stuff...

he also turned down the matrix...after will smith was offered the part of neo...thank god he turned down both films...they were much better off without him...especially the wrestler!

I like the part where he is fed up..and he gets excited and he goes "Really? really? oh my god!...Really?" it happens at least once in every movie.

I agree Cage has done a lot of shit, a lot, but you can't watch leaving las vegas and say he can't act.
andyf2280 2 years ago 63
@andyf2280 He used to be a really interesting actor throughout 80s-early 90s. He did a great job in Peggy Sue Got Married by turning a predictable and potentially boring character into a humorous and quirky one. He'd done that with almost all his films inthe 80s, from Vampire's Kiss to Valley Girl. But after Leaving Las Vegas he started taking himself way too seriously and choosing those macho/action- hero roles which he's really not suited for. He's more of character actor, IMO
ritter89 1 year ago
@ritter89 I agree with you, he's not bad actor at all, just as you said he seems recently to have gone for crappy action type roles, he was good in the Weatherman, altho' Caine stole the show. Adaptation, I even really liked Face-Off....(I'm sure I'm in the minority there tho')
"National Treasure" on the other hand, I had to sit thru that, in Spanish, on a looooong bus journey in Chili, purgatory.
andyf2280 1 year ago
@andyf2280 Yeah, he was great until about the mid 90s. One of the most creative and unique actors to come on the scene in a long time. I was blown away by his performances in Leaving Las Vegas, Birdy, Raising Arizona, Boy In Blue and even Valley Girl. He'd deliver these great oddball performances, even in films that flopped commercially. But after Con Air(still a decent performance, IMO), he got into an "action hero" type groove that didn't fit him. He does "dark comedy" best, imo
ritter89 1 year ago
@andyf2280 ,Nicholas Cage is not only a great actor but a truly faithful friend. He is honest and always looking out for others. Most people don't know this but I do and wanted to share it w/ everybody.

@andyf2280 And "Raising Arizona". Genius. Brilliant role in that. I think Nick Cage is a great actor, but for some reason, he seems to fit into Hollywood largely as someone that gets cast for average movies a lot of the time. A bit wasted, but I guess it's just how it balanced out with the money he gets offered, and his schedule, or whatever.

thank god he pulled out of this film, he's been a piece of wood in every film since the late 90's.

cage and rourke are two great actors. Period.
robertborak 2 years ago 6
Kudos for Cage being humble to give Rourke the oppurtunity of resurrection. If Cage had done this role it would not have been Oscar worthy, no one would have talked about it and it would just be another "Cage flick." Such as Bangkok Dangerous, Next, Knowing which were horrible films. Now this has given Rourke Iron Man 2 which is awesome.
jokerplainview 2 years ago 4
thank god he didn't land this role. i'm sorry but cage sucks. i hate his acting. i think he's good as hell in raising arizona. other than that, i can't think of a single performance i dug of his. wait, no i take that back. he kicked ass in adapation. but other than that,..he sucks.
colinmccubbin 2 years ago 3
the fuck your talking about? He was incredible in lord of war and bangkok dangerous and aswell in national treasure. And why dont you judge yourself before judging other people. You say he sucks but i bet your far worse than him so how about you keep your punk ass critics to yourself you self righteous asswipe!

Cage has real class to explain, honestly, what was going on with his part of the process and to give Rourke his due credit. Cage is a great actor.

Cage sounds like a generous guy.

Yes, all respect to Cage, but I'M glad Rourke did The Wrestler instead. He was perfect for the role.

they all do in a way. ABSOLUTELY all action actors. from bale to pitt.
giugnhgbvinierngvb89 2 years ago
Back to Cage: he's a fine actor but no one else could have brought what Mickey Rourke brought to the role of the Ram - the pure genius (and physicality, too). Cage was wise to remove himself - this role could have been an absolute disaster to his career - it would be quite easy for an actor to look ridiculous in this part.
92ninersboy 2 years ago 6

92ninersboy 2 years ago 6
sean penn embaressed?...probably one of the most backward comments ive seen in awhile...i have one word for you....MILK!!
moonlightgarden12am 2 years ago
Sean Penn is a fantastic actor - but "Milk" was a mediocre film, like most biopics. Listen to Sean's acceptance speech and you can hear the awkward position he was put in by the academy. Penn told Rolling Stone that after seeing "The Wrestler" he "wept" and that "it was a beautiful piece of work". Nick Cage - no one else - could have pulled off that role - the other actors know what came down, what Rourke accomplished.
92ninersboy 2 years ago
see here you are just pointing out facts which are interesting...a total 180 of your other comments which are just loaded with riduclous opinions.. though i have to disagree with your mediocre comment about milk and most biopics..just a few biofilms come to mind that display some of the best acting yet on film..SHINE, THE PIANIST, POLLOCK, COPYING BEETHOVEN, AMADAUS, THE AVIATOR, MEN OF HONOR, BASQUIAT, RAY, SCHINDLERS LIST, QUILLS...these movies kinda make your statement look "mediocre"...
moonlightgarden12am 2 years ago
I said that "most" biopics are mediocre - definitely not all. They often are big money makers and seem to get reflexive oscar attention. I think "The Life And Times of Harvey Milk" was a way better film than "Milk" - but that was a documentary. You may find that opinion ridiculous but its shared by many who've seen both films. Say, I really like Sean Penn -as an actor and politically - I just think this situation with The Wrestler was exceptional.
92ninersboy 2 years ago
well again your "most" mediocre biopics comment still seems a little off...i mean i just named a few...you still have movies like THE HURRICANE, CINDERRALLA MAN, DONNIE BRASCO, AMERICAN SPLENDOR.etc..so thats why i disagree with the term "most".cus there aint that many more out there in our time at least that would make your statement "MOST", true.and i have never seen the documentary on harvey milk, so i dont think your opinion on that subject is ridiculous.and yes the WRESTLER was exceptional
moonlightgarden12am 2 years ago
A. Because he's already over-exposed and would be even more so in leotards, love ya Nick, but take a vacation, and take Samuel L. Jackson with you, ..and Christian Bale...and Julia Roberts..

No, he actually implied mickey did do steroids for the movie...then sugar-coated it with "inow, i love mickey, he's great, bla bla". kinda funny
huraboma 2 years ago
fair enough
zackthecameraman 2 years ago
I think Mickey Rourke has basically admitted (by never denying) that he used steroids to get into the shape he was in. I mean, they hired a steroid dealer to play a steroid dealer in the movie. I remember seeing Rourke on Letterman and Letterman asked if he used steroids and Mickey just sort of grimaced as if to say, "I can't say yes because it's illegal."
