  • Glados v 1.0.

  • The cake is a LIE!!!!!!!

  • I can now die happy :)

  • I am so happy and I'm still a drive.

I feel fantastic and I'm still a drive.

And while you're dying i'll be, still a drive.

    ...

    Still a drive..

  • all that work! and the cake is still a lie

  • team fortress 2 theme song please

  • 20 people will not get cake

  • You make me want to cry... memories :)

  • Have my children, I don't care just have them.

  • dude i love your stuff

  • they are singing :D

  • GLaDOS 0.0.0.1

  • Far right doesn't do much.

  • @kwlkid85 Comparatively, neither does the cannon in the 1812 Overture, but I'd argue that it still plays an important role. ;)

  • You should remake this with your 8-drive setup.

  • Awesome

  • To Aperture Science's request, your Apple Device will dispense cake in 3...2...1

  • If you need some bass, I've got a couple of 8 inch drives around somewhere - LOL!

  • This is extremely impressive.

  • It looks like a iPod Touch

  • What is the device with the screen behind the floppy janx?

  • @ujaquetz As @ColdestLivewire guessed, it's a first-gen iPod touch.

  • Repurposed Tech awesomeness.

Well done. I've seen this kind of stuff with water pumps and Tesla Coils, but not 3.5" magnetic disk drives.

  • WOW!That's what I call programing!Great work!

  • You have just made my day. Also nice to see an Arduino being used, i've never heard of them until a couple of weeks ago (currently getting one to mimic a winter bee cluster for uni project).

  • GLaDOS: The very beginning.

  • Nerd!

    ...okay, maybe i'm a little jealous... :p

  • TEH CAKE IS NOT A LIE!!!!

  • Dear god I think I actually heard GLaDOS's voice while this was playing. O_o

  • Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo... poor flopy disks D:

  • Asian?

  • @djtrebor123 いいえ、アメリカ人です。 ;)

  • @Sammy1Am seems legit...

  • @Sammy1Am No it is American?

  • @Pointsmasher Enh, "I'm American", "It's American". Japanese is a very contextual language. Then again, to be fair, the original question didn't specify if he wanted to know if the drives were Asian, or I was. The drives, in actuality, are probably Asian. I (as my profile picture suggests) am not at all Asian.

  • @Sammy1Am regardless, your original response was funny as fuck. No idea what it said, but funny as fuck

  • @Sammy1Am Google Translator :D

  • @Sammy1Am

人 refers to a person, there's no window of interpretation here.

  • @Cynogame Yeah, I suppose if you rule out that I'm anthropomorphicizing the drives, then it's pretty clear.

  • @Pointsmasher how'd you get "it is american" he has the kanji for person :P. in true translate is says "no, american person is" technically if he wanted to say, i am american, he would need 私は in front of the sentence :P

  • @Slyboogy07 he doesnt need to

it's is referred if you dont have it

    like

    genki desu (i am healthy)

or isogashii desu (i am busy)

  • @djtrebor123 Engineer, probably. I love what I do. 8D

  • omg lololololololololol i love this song its so epic i love it

  • I'm actually really curious to know how this works! I was born during an age where floppys were irrelevant (1990) so I don't really know what exactly is happening here....

  • @Jdawg0529 The short answer is that I wrote a Java program that reads MIDI files, converts the notes into periods (inverse of frequency) and sends them over USB to an Arduino that makes the read-heads on the floppy drives change tracks at the specified interval. The long answer is available as a video tutorial (link in the doobly-doo).

  • @Sammy1Am Asians...

  • @Sammy1Am You called it a doobly-doo. Are you a nerdfighter? Or wheezywaiter?

  • @4lifeNerdfighter I'm proud to count myself both among the ranks of nerdfighters and beardlovers (though I do not currently have a beard myself).

  • @Jdawg0529 it might be surprising but even though people think the us military has the most high tech stuff we actually still use floppy disks as our primary way to store and transfer data.

  • amazing

  • Do runescape theme song please ?

  • The nerd inside me is inlove

  • Next rig I build I'm crammin 4 floppy drives in it just so i can do this :)

  • Awesome !!

  • I loved how he put a iphone with a picture of the cake there :D

  • THE CAKE IS A LIE!!

  • Give this man the internets. the WHOLE INTERNETS!

  • @jqdsilva She was adorable ^~^

  • WHAT. THE. HELL!

    SKILLS! BALLS! HAX!

    You got it all xD

  • Floppy Drive #2 Is the best

  • @georgetob It's different.

  • about the only good thing that floppy drives can be used for now lol

  • Did anyone else sing the lyrics while this was playing?

  • Edit: World of Warcraft theme? The other guy doing floppy songs refused to.

If you do try it, go for the "Legends of Azeroth" theme from the original 1-50 (60 actually came later in a mini-expansion) game. IMO, by far the best rendition yet.

  • @TheTopLogician I will definitely add it to my list of requested songs. Real-life is keeping me very busy, so I haven't had a lot of time for floppy music, but I won't say no (there might just be a very long wait...). =)

  • @Sammy1Am Woo! Floppy musik. I like it.

  • @TheTopLogician I never refused to do it. I simply told you how I despised the game and that I needed a specific song title in order to do it. My general disregard for the game makes me unfamiliar with it's music and which would be considered it's "main" song.

  • @MrSolidSnake745 I can't imagine you would do a song from a game you hate. That's basically refusal in my book; I don't know what it means in yours.

  • @TheTopLogician An outright refusal in mine, I am not so vague or complicated. I would not have asked for a title to search for had I intended not to do it. My preference on a game does not extend to every aspect associated with it. Should I also hate the friends of mine who swear by the game? No, that is ridiculous. I thought it was implicit that there is a difference between a game and its music. It's normal for a person to not like a game, but enjoy its music.

  • @TheTopLogician Umm, I have friends who have been playing since launch, at least at the time of public release the level cap was 60

  • Who what how!?! This is amazing!

  • I'm making a note here (for you)... HUGE SUCCESS!!!!

  • Really cool, but you missed an entire stanza.

  • @Hylia34 Not so much missed as intentionally skipped. A lesson you learn early on in arranging for pep band (or floppy drives it turns out) is that without lyrics, every verse is _identical_ and it gets old fast.

Rather than thinking of it as skipped, think of the first stanza as a magical double stanza that contains all the words from both verses. =P

  • How the hell did you do this?

  • so floppy...

    we meet again...

  • This is the nerdiest thing ever! :D

  • the second drive is my favorite!!

  • HOW

  • Epic!

  • EPIC

  • @Sammy1Am Can you please do Guile's theme. That seriously would be legendary. Thank you

  • How does it work ?

  • thats a way to burn a cd on flames :l

  • AWESOME!

  • GlaDOS would be so proud...

  • awesome

  • Brilliant, you can almost make out the lyrics!

  • A:\glados.exe

  • Good work.

  • remind me the portal 2 torrets singing at the end

  • Is it me, or do I hear GLaDOS singing?

  • Glados when she was a baby...

  • @jqdsilva oh shit...it's already started.

Actually, I don't know if GLaDOS would be better or worse than Skynet.....

  • Glados programmed em XD

  • I don't know how I got here from My Little Dashie, but I don't care. It really helps cheer me up after such a sad fanfic.

  • @Zombieytp Don't know ponies invade everything including some video completely unrelated to ponies, but, I feel your pain. Read that too. Damn, powerful stuff. *brohoof*

  • @Amatei0 (;n;)/][\(;n;)

  • inb4 404 due to sopa

  • Nice one.

Go get yourself a cake. You deserve it.

Might try doing one of those. Thanks!

  • i like the ipod in the back with the cake =)

  • someone should do the turret song from portal 2

  • @jimbobhas He already did :)

  • Prototype of the Turrents :D

  • Are those twisted ethernet pairs I see there?

  • @MrFreemaan Indeed! They were convenient and color coded!

  • @Sammy1Am what cat? And btw nice video! I'm super impressed. Thank's for sharing

  • @DisheveledSuccess We're not talking about any heavy data transfer, so there should not be any category requirement. I think mine happen to be 5, but not a big deal.

  • aaaahahahahahaha this is the most awesome stuff i've seen in a while :D

  • 18 people are inhuman, because i mean REALLY! how can you not find this awesome?

  • I guess that would have been GLaDOS, if Portal came out around 1985...

  • GLaDOS play!

  • iPod cake!

  • I can't make mine reproduce those lower notes. I'll check your code out, thank you! :D

  • A:\ is the real deal !

  • Comment removed

  • Thats so cool, i love the iphone with cake on it in the background :D

  • The alpha testing of GlaDoS right here.

  • I've just found this video.

As if tesla coils weren't enough...

  • i can sine ever word with out the lyrics i just now found this out!!!

  • These things are so cutee..

  • GlaDOS would be so proud...

  • THE DISC IS A LIE.

  • I'd love to hear this reproduced, now that you have 8 drives and a better sequencing technique... and a better microphone. :)

  • Please release a floppy disk album on spotify with all your songs! ^^ I would listen to it, I honestly like the sound

  • The cake on the iphone, Lovely touch :)

  • hahahahahaha . nice. this is super nerd. lol

  • AWESOME!

  • BRAVO! BRAVO!

  • nerds are fricken awesome

  • I am going crazy. I can hear a slight voice singing. o.o I LOVE YOU FLOPPY DRIVES.

  • ;A; amg

  • Wow, this is incredible!

You actually found a USE for floppy drives! Well done!

...And good job on the song, too!

  • :o. Amazing work,dude

  • Alternate ending to Portal? lol

  • Behold, the predecessor of GladOS.

Fact: This man's real name is Cave Johnson.

  • crap! now im gunna have to set up my floppies again(my first singing floppies didnt work to well...) and use sammy1am's code of course :)

  • Fact: Floppy drives will be in more demand now, then since 2000. All because of this video.

  • I guess you could say that...

The floppy disk drive is still alive.

    *Puts on sunglasses*

    YEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

  • Inb4 electro producers start using floppy drives to get that sound and they shoot up in price.

  • You, sir, have successfully combined two of the most cherished relics of Nerdiness.

Floppy Disk Drives. And Portal. Add a little DIY programming, and you have won the Nerd Cake!

  • This Was A...

    (puts on sunglasses)

    HUGE SUCCESS!

    yEAAAaaAAAAaAAGagahhhhHHHNNNNGG!?

  • im definitly gonna try this..

  • Floppy discs sing ,,Stil Alive"

    Irony? Or maybe...rise of machines!

  • This is now playing in Old Aperture.

  • I'm put of by the constant static, but still a nice listen.

  • @MrSparkle404 Bleh, me too. I will be avoiding Behringer mixers in the future. Thanks for the view though! =D

  • @Sammy1Am you could use Audacity to remove the static

    awsome vids btw :D

  • @Sammy1Am I'd avoid everything behringer if I were you, they're made to be cheap and die within a year or two

I've had my my X1204 mixer for close to a year and one of my channels is slowly dying already, and my school has a much larger version of the X1204 for less than a year as well and its got a couple fucked up channels and a few messed up pots :(

though you should invest in a nice condenser mic :)

  • now I miss my floppy drive.:( I'm so sorry for throwing you away.</3

  • awesome!

  • You have to be such a nerd to appreciate this. That said, if I ran a country, making these things would be a sport, and "Still Alive" would be the national anthem.

  • @commanderbige Best. Country. Ever.

  • I wish I knew how to do stuff like this :/

  • @ITSbigwillystyle The Internet is your friend. I had no idea how about any of this until one of my coworkers told me he thought musical floppies were fake and couldn't be done. It took a lot of trial and error, but I figured it out eventually (with lots of help from Google).

  • @Sammy1Am He thought the floppy is a lie? :O

  • Aw, I was hoping for the Mirror's Edge Still Alive. :c

  • One of my favorite songs, and a heavy dose of nostalgia... This is win.

  • A very early development of GLaDOS.

  • the cake is a lie!

  • For some reason, I feel proud of those floppy drives.

  • @LolWhatsAUsername Is it because they're "Still Alive"? *groan*

  • beat that blu ray!

  • Is there any way to play them live with a MIDI keyboard?

  • @osculant /watch?v=z54b6VNfrtU here is a demo made by the OP

  • well, my pcs are getting de-floppyed...

  • the cake is a lie!

  • Better than the orginal.
