Wow, I remember seeing the SR71 at Farnborough the same year, maybe it was the same plane too. Didn't have a video camera back then, Grr! I remember that to make the landing it had to overshoot England and come back, and when it took off again the ground shook and I could feel the heat from the afterburners
Although I missed experiencing the Blackbird in flight that day, I will never forget when the Concord flew over us. My head felt like it was going to explode… and it was good!
Can I get a copy of this vid? I loved the Abbotsford Airshows of the past. I was at this SR71 flyby and remember it very well, even though I was only 11 years old at the time.
I remember this airshow very well, even though I was 7 at the time! I was visiting my grandparents that lived near there... and we had taken a break from going to EXPO 86 that day, and got to see an incredible show! Thank you for posting this... brings back many good memories!
An SR-71 did a flt-by only some years earlier. I was alone at work on Saturday when I heard the roar and sprinted for the door. "It was big and black" said a kid at the car dealer across the lane. A few minutes later the rumble returned, but I only got to see two big engines climbing to the west; -FLASH-FLASH the afterburners cut in and it vanished like a movie spacecraft hitting warp speed. I hardly saw anything and it was still impressive.
Final approach is over this spot and a SR71 doing a high speed pass over this spot was more than enough to make anyone piss their pants. This was during Expo 86 as well
I was working at Phat Phils off 3 road in Richmond next door to the Wendys. I watched the SR71 do a flyby over YVR like a lot of airshow attendees did in those days. There was a guy in the Wendys drive Thru that shit his pants..he got out and was in full USAF uniform with his wife and kids. Not sure if they had come up for the airshow but the look on his face after getting out of his car was priceless...Final approach is over this spot and a SR71
The crew did a good job managing that single engine fly by in full afterburner.. notice how the vertical stabilizers are deflected 20 degrees?? the maneuver looks like it required about 10degree banking into the fired engine to keep the Habu traveling in a straight track.... a most excellent vid
I was at the Abbotsford airshow when this HUGE bird flew on a hot Friday afternoon in B.C. , and the high speed pass gave me goose bumps from my head to my toenails. An unbelievable plane in person. GREAT VIDEO!!!
Wow, that's all there is to say. I've never had the good fortune of hearing a real one (I wasn't even born when this was filmed) but it's still the most awesome aircraft ever, period.
I remember that day well it was a Friday in August and it was very hot when the SR 71 made its Grand entry and WOW. It was so loud the sound was like some one hitting you in your chest. The 86 airshow was the Best. Thank you for the add.
I was there that day, that was the best display I had ever seen! The noise was so loud the video cant even match! WOW I love it, this aircraft is amazing, built in the 1950's Skunk works kicks ass!! Great Video!
I was working in Vancouver that day when a gawdalmighty roar filled the place. I ran outside and the Blackbird was already climbing over the ocean miles to the west. Two blue flashes of afterburner and this amazing plane disappeared as if going into warp drive...
